The combination of a travel time complication and a chronograph was frst unveiled by Patek
Philippe on Aquanaut reference 5164A in 2012. Acclaimed by collectors as one of the most interesting watch line evolutions introduced by Patek Philippe (the Aquanaut line did not feature a complicated watch until then), rivers of ink were pour to laude it, and a prominent online watch magazine wrote in its review of the watch “why not put this new traveltime caliber in the Naultilus? That’s another question for another day” As it turns out, the “other day” came two years later: in 2014, Patek Philippe released the present ref. 5990/1A, featuring the same complication with the addition of a date counter at 12. The presence of this additional counter grants the watch an enormously balanced, regulator-style dial layout which fascinates to this day the collectors community. Another highly praised detail is the location of the buttons used to change the local time: they are cleverly disguised in the lef “fap of the Nautilus case, thus allowing for minimal modifcation to the eternal Genta design: the only apparent diference with a non-complicated Nautilus case - beyond of course the dimension - is the unobtrusive addition of the chronographic pushers.
