www.andover.edu/intouch a musical theatre composing team, and she directed From Up Here this spring. John Henry Fitzgerald and Amo Manuel watched Ant Man together, though the jury is still out on whether it was a good movie, because John Henry fell asleep halfway through it. Luke Stidham, Rem Remmel, Clark Perkins, Marjorie Kozloff, Emma Mehlman, Allison Roth, Sierra Heneghan, Austin Gaiss, Jake Howell, and Scott Diekema rang in the New Year together in NYC! Matt Ilalio visited Brandon Michel at Penn during Army-Navy weekend. Armaan Singh visited Miguel Wise at his home over winter break, and the two of them then traveled to see Matthew Simon and Charlee Van Eijk at Harvey Mudd. That’s all, folks! We can’t wait to see what the rest of 2016 has in store for us.

One year out from Andover graduation, our classmates are engaged in their college and gapyear lives. Here is just a fraction of the news: Nolan Crawford brought the Yorkies spirit with him to Yale, where he now sings in another a cappella group, the Spizzwinks(?), and alongside Claire Carroll ’14 in the more traditional choral Glee Club. Another musical classmate, Arthur Doran, is preparing an album, which he describes as “sounding like R. Kelly or like Usher but with more jazz.” He planned to drop the album this May in one of two ways: either making just one copy and auctioning it off for millions—or putting it on SoundCloud. John Gorton and Anoush Shehadeh run together frequently and can often be spotted jogging along I-95 in Westchester County, N.Y. This past Thanksgiving break, after a light 40-mile run, they reunited a portion of the 2014–2015 cross-country team—including current students Noah Belser ’16, Basil Alfaro ’18, and Sam Tobin ’18—for dinner. Tim Salvadore attends Virginia Tech and loves his time there. He joined Kurtis Weber, Foster LeBoeuf, and Josh Murphy earlier

this year to attend a fundraiser touch football game and banquet put on by the Murphy family. David Gutierrez currently works as a bilingual receptionist at Parenting Journey, a family-support nonprofit in Somerville, Mass. Antonia Leggett, Kory Stuer, and Diego Blandon are all well and stay in contact at Georgetown. This winter, David Gaetano was joined by Katie Williams ’14 for a vacation in Sarasota, Fla. Back at Oberlin, David takes economics with Elijah Aladin, who occasionally visits Nya Hughes in New York. Just before the New Year, Andrew Zheng and Matt Osborn rode the bus together to mount the Peak, the highest point in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, Andrew hates heights. Addison Davenport joined the Northwestern University ski team and took full advantage of this winter’s snow in Wyoming and Colorado. Frances Yackel, a student at NYU, is spending her first year studying abroad in Florence, Italy. Frances describes Florence as a “tiny city,” which helps explains why she traveled so much her first semester, visiting London, Prague, and Zurich. Evie Elson writes, “College has brought out the hidden a cappella in me, confusing my friends, who had always known me to ruthlessly break out in song in my room or in the shower, despite my overt pitchiness and inability to remember lyrics.” Evie has been able to share this newly acquired skill with many Andover classmates, including Frances Yackel, Charlie Jarvis, Ali Hill, Catalina Feder, Noah Hornik, Jordan Swett, and Katie Weaver, all of whom spent time together in NYC this winter. Haille McKenzie undertook a rigorous year of art foundations at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her favorite class is Spatial Dynamics, a complicated way to say “3D art and sculpture.” She finds herself interested in feminist and racial issues, and in youth culture in the Internet age. Issraa Faiz shares similar interests and studied “Afrofuturism” through a variety of media as she wrote a paper on the relationship between technology and black life. Her work will contribute to the panel she hopes to bring to her campus (Connecticut College) in the fall. While most of us are now one year into college, our classmates who took gap years are also well into their adventures. During the fall, Bianca Navarro Bowman stayed busy working at a preschool, interning at a startup multicultural art museum in Washington, D.C., and barista-ing part-time at Starbucks. She squeezed in time to meet up with Alejandra Uria, Katie Weaver, Austin Robichaud, and Kaylee Llewellyn in N.C. In January, Bianca set off to be an au pair in Spain. Alex Westfall participated in an experimental art program in a tiny fishing town in Iceland. “It was a total dream,” she writes. “I climbed waterfalls, explored snowy peaks, jumped into icy fjords, and danced under the Northern Lights.” In the spring, Alex relocated to Napa, Calif., for a photography

program. Alex’s senior year roommate, Tessa Peterson, was home in Colorado for a brief time after her semester in France, where she and Eden Livingston explored the winter terrain on snowshoes. Miles Neumann is spending his gap year on three continents. He writes: “I started off the year working at a safari lodge in northern Kenya, digging ditches, thatching roofs, and chasing elephants! It was an amazing experience and a far cry from Andover.” Miles later wrangled pheasants while working at a shooting estate in Scotland. In January, he and Nicolas Robertson took a road trip from Quito, Ecuador, to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Oli Chernyk, also traveling, spent a couple of months motorcycling and backpacking through Southeast Asia. After returning home, Oli got his bartending license and planned to head to Australia or New Zealand, “hoping to land a job bartending on the coast.” Nurilys Cintron’s Semester at Sea trip took her from the U.K. to San Diego, with stops in 12 countries in the Mediterranean, West Africa, and the Caribbean. Last we checked in, Hanover Vale was a cook at the Wellesley, Mass., restaurant of Ming Tsai ’82. In January, she headed off to London for culinary school and to backpack around Europe. Finally, a few words from our alumni class president, John Gorton: “Whether you’ve just finished your first year of college or are off exploring the world on a gap year, take a moment to remember that this time last year, we were all standing in a circle on the Great Lawn, diplomas in hand, ready to leave Andover and set off into Andover | Summer 2016
