EA boys’ soccer is a tightly knit group of boys dedicated to working hard in every aspect of their daily lives. At practice, we work to train the good habits and ferret out the bad. This includes anything from tweaking our playing style to fit an upcoming game to learning how to accept constructive criticism and apply it. The team’s strong chemistry allows us to work through adversity and even have a good time doing it. Our coaching staff—Cosgrove, Lincoln, and Hutchins—is visibly engaged and push us to always get better. This team has become integrated into each of our lives. Simply being able to come out after a day of class and play the sport we love with a great group of friends has made such a positive impact on all of us. Oftentimes, we can serve as more than just a sports team, but also as a support group for each other. From academic to social difficulties and everything in between, we can rely on each other for help and guidance. We’ve built a strong chemistry not just on the soccer field, but in every aspect of our lives at Exeter. The game against Andover is always exciting. It is truly a special experience and just being a part of the tradition is remarkable itself. Maintaining this healthy rivalry that is so deeply rooted in our school’s history is an honor. —Quintin DiStefano ’17

T

he boys’ varsity soccer team is special. As captains, we have been fortunate to have been a part of some really successful teams. Each squad has had its differences, but boys’ soccer has always been about a good group of guys playing a game they love. Each and every one of us comes to practice each afternoon excited to play. That love for the sport and mutual respect for one another is what makes our team strong. Thus far, we have had ups and downs. We came out of our opening couple of games with some serious questions. Despite a start that presented many challenges, we have been able to work past them and to define our season. This year we have talent all over the field and on the bench, with a spread of both younger and older players. That depth has given our team a different dimension on the field and a stronger connection off it. As one of our coaches told us, “This team has the capacity” to achieve great things. Playing soccer for Andover has meant so much to both of us. Every time we step on the field, we represent a school and a team rich in history. After a tough game in 2015, our assistant coach reminded us in a fiery speech: “We don’t own the jerseys we wear each game. We are merely their custodians. We play for the legacy left by those who came before us and the chance to leave a legacy for those who will come after.” The legacy of our program is not—and cannot be—valued by the goals we score, but rather by the sacrifice and hard work of successive teams. There is no game more historically important to our team than Andover vs. Exeter. We are excited to have new players get a taste of this experience and for the chance to make our school proud in this contest one more time. —Henry Meyerrose ’17 & Peter Heckendorn ’17
