To honor their coach Paul Kalkstein ’61, who retired in June, former basketball players from 1977 and 1978 arranged a surprise meeting with Kalkstein and his wife, Marnie, in the DiClemente Gym, on Saturday, April 22. The group (above) donned vintage uniforms and later arranged a dinner to roast coach Kalkstein at Palmer’s Restaurant in Andover. The teammates donated to the Andover Fund for Current Use Scholarships in honor of the Kalksteins. Among those attending were, from left, Dave Gutzke ’77, Monsignor John Barres ’78, Jimmy Demetroulakos ’78, the Kalksteins, Mass. Senator Steve Panagiotakos ’78, Mark Lapolla ’78 and Tom Mannix ’77. Kalkstein commented, “It was the thrill of a career for me.” Pictured, left and right, are “Resolutions” and a Congressional Proclamation issued by the Massachusetts State Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives upon Kalkstein’s retirement.
A Visit from Phillipian Alumni The Phillipian Alumni Council, consisting of former Phillipian staff members, some of whom are book authors, journalists, and editors, came to campus for the second year, on February 22, to meet with faculty and brainstorm with current Phillipian staff members. Pictured, left to right, are council members Martin Begien ’46, Buzz Bissinger ’72 (author of Friday Night Lights), Bob Marshall ’64, Roger Strong Jr. ’75, Gary Lee ’74 (Washington Post reporter), Tom Strong ’82 (national editor of the Associated Press), Bill Kummel ’81 (former COO of the New York Sun), and Dan Schwerin ’00. A participant not pictured is Clem Wood ’04. The Phillipian faculty advisor, Nina Scott, said of the group, “These are very distinguished people in their field, and we are grateful for their advice and making time in their busy lives for our paper.” 40
