Salon Hygiene

Colouring methods.

There are many ways to colour hair and the choice of products is better now than before. The improved formulas give superior shades and their safety is constantly monitored.

1. Well-trimmed nails and long hair tied back.

Natural Colours.

2. Minimal jewelry, particularly around hands, wrists and neck.

Henna, Chamomile, indigo and various other herbs have been in use for hundreds of years.

ll members of staff in a salon must maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and cleanliness. This contributes to hygiene standards of client care, as well as good hygiene practice. The following guidelines should be followed:

3. Clean work clothes, washed regularly, short sleeves tops are best as long sleeve can become contaminated, causing cross infections when touching clients. 4. Hands must be washed before and after treating each client and after handling food, using the toilet, handling money etc. Use soap, preferably liquid dispensers. 5. Any cuts or abrasions should be covered with waterproof dressing. 6. Regular bathing or showering to remove dirt from hands, arms etc, and also to prevent body odour. 7. The greatest risk of cross- infection occurs when the skin is cut or pierced and the equipment used for this MUST be always kept sterile. 8. Work surfaces need to be disinfected with a chemical disinfectant such as bleach; floors need cleaning with detergent and hot water.

In the early eighties there was a great popularity for Henna that can offer shades of Red or black, multitude applications are needed to build up enough residue to give the desired effect.

Colour rinses. These colours rest on the hairs surface, are applied after each shampoo and last until the next shampoo. Used as a temporary method of covering grey hair between permanent colouring, or to enhance existing colours from fading.

Semi-permanent colour Longer lasting: up to about six to 8 weeks. These penetrate the outer cuticle of the hair. The colours produced are more natural. They cannot offer any lift of shade, and are used mainly to cover grey hair, temporarily darken lighter shades, or enhance an existing shade to give more depth and shine.

Permanent dyes These are often known as Oxidation dyes because an oxidizer [Hydrogen Peroxide] and Ammonia are mixed with the colouring agent prior to application. The formulation of permanent dyes is extremely complicated, and manufacturers go to great lengths to attain colour fastness and minimum disruption of the hair’s strength and elasticity.

Permanent dyes can offer both lighter and darker shades of your own hair colour.

Bleaching and highlighting. Bleaching does not add colour but removes it. The oxidizing effect decolorizes the pigment in the hair shaft and lightens the colour. Bleaching is rarely used on its own because it does not give a natural shade, so various colour agents are added to reduce brassiness and give the required shade.

Brazilian hair straightening 巴西直髮 razilian Keratin Treatment (also called escova progressiva, keratin straightening or BKT) is a method of temporarily straightening hair by sealing the hair with a liquid keratin and in some products a formaldehyde solution.

Pioneered in Brazil, the Brazilian Keratin Treatment is said to be able to be performed on all types of chemically treated hair. The system is said to eliminate natural frizz, unruly curls or waves whilst retaining the hairs natural body, unlike other treatments such as the Japanese Yuko System. The technique of the application is similar to the Yuko System: straightening irons or Hairdryers are used to seal the product into the hair cuticle. It does not have the problem of re-growth as the treatment gradually washes out over time.

The smaller keratin molecules penetrate the hair cortex improving and repairing the quality of the hair from the inside. The added strength, elasticity and moisture result in a smooth, soft, shiny and straightened effect. The larger molecules coat the hair cuticle and prevent environmental damage such as UV rays and pollution for your hair on the outside.

Treatments last around 10–12 weeks and repeating the treatment every few months will allow re-treatment of the new growth. The treatment however does not allow one to wash the hair for up to 72 hours, or holding the hair away from the face with hair clips, ponytail or behind the ears.

HAIRDRESSER INTERVIEWS: 1. Darrin Usher: The Hairdressers Ltd

Darrin Usher

1. When did you first realize you wanted to become a hair stylist and where did you start? I was 15 years old coming to the end of year 10 at school in Perth West Australia. A friend of an uncle owned a salon, I loved the environment so one day I asked what it takes to become a hairstylist and it all went from there.

2. What are the most requested styles in the salon at the moment? We do a lot of colour and relaxing. As we are moving into summer now with the high humidity we are doing a lot of Brazilian relaxer Smoothing treatments to manage the hair better. The Bob has been making a very strong come back with a variety of subtle versions. Geometric is back.

3. What are your predictions in hair/colour for this summer season? I feel this summer is more about softness, so subtle tone on tone or mix tone colours will be what we will be recommending for anyone wanting a change from what they have. Done with either multiple block colour with slight shade differences or by combining complimenting colours for highlights done with mixed spacing and sizing. 4. What do you think is more important, for a client to tell you, so that you can get their hairstyle right for them? This can be tricky since we live in such a multi cultural environment with client’s useing different terms to describe what they want. I don’t think its up to the client to ‘tell’ the stylist what to do’ but more for the stylist to fully understand and interpret the clients wants and needs.. It’s always good to have references and clients should ask as many questions as possible until they feel confident. 5. We always like to ask stylists, what is their own particular favourite hairstyle of all time? Wow of all time... tough. Each fashion era has their favourite versions, but I tend to like simplicity and clean lines. For me I would have to say the classic graduated bob: as there are always subtle variations, giving a nice profile shape, clean lines and easy maintenance. 6. What are your favourite products right now? As I mentioned we do a lot of relaxing so the Keratin Complex has to be one of my favourites at the moment and great for this humid weather. For short hair and texture I love Matt Head by Fudge or the Osis Dust It, very cool. 7. If you had chosen another profession, what would it have been? Well I think there would be 2 options: If I could actually draw well I think a Tattoo artist would be high on the list. Since my other passion is for cars and motorcycles I think it would have to be something to do with building and customizing cars and bike. 8. What brand of scissors do you use for creating your cuts and looks? For the last 10 years: Hikari from Japan. I have a few pairs and find the weight, balance and blades all balance with great quality. 9. What tips can you give to up and coming hairstylists? I think one of the key elements for any stylist is learning how to truly listen to your client with an open mind. It sounds simple but I find it is one of the most difficult things many stylists face. Communication is your most powerful tool to building a successful clientele.

24

2. Kim Robinson for: kimrobinson , kr+

5. We always like to ask stylists, what is their own particular favourite hairstyle of all time? A one-line bob for women. Just short and neat for men. 6. What are your favourite products right now? Hair Rejuvenation Formula (HRF) exclusively available at kimrobinson and kr+ 7. If you had chosen another profession, what would it have been? Artist 8. What brand of scissors do you use for creating your cuts and looks? Hiraki scissors specially tailored for me. 9. What tips can you give to up and coming hairstylists? Be a good listener with great empathy.

1. When did you first realize you wanted to become a hair stylist and where did you start? At home in Western Australia at the young age of 14, I was extensively trained by the Australian Institute of Technology and awarded the Australian Technical Institute Apprentice of the year.

2. What are the most requested styles in the salon at the moment? Cleanse and go style 3. What are your predictions in hair/colour for this summer season? The bouffant is back, but this time with a new, unstructured modern look and combined with a loose pony or carefree up-do. For day: hair is swept across the brow and fastened at the side in a tousled pony or loose plait. The look is voluminous hair, strong brows, strong eyes and pale lips.

4. What do you think is more important, for a client to tell you, so that you can get their hairstyle right for them? We carry our consultation through 2-way communication. It is equally important for both client and stylist to express and listen.

3. Kolen Wong for: VIA IL COLPO 1.When did you first realize you wanted to become a hair stylist and where did you start? 2.What are the most requested styles in the salon at the moment? 3. What are your predictions in hair/colour for this summer season? 4.What do you think is more important, for a client to tell you, so that you can get their hairstyle right for them? 5.We always like to ask stylists, what is their own particular favorite hairstyle of all time? A: Full Fringe(齊留海),short to medium length的Graduation Bob。 6. What are your favorite products right now? 7. If you had chosen another profession, what would it have been? 8. What brand of scissors do you use for creating your cuts and looks? 9. What tips can you give to up and coming hairstylists?

6.

Rennie Fensham

6. Yvonne: TONI & GUY Hong Kong

1. When did you first realize you wanted to become a hair stylist and where did you start? I first realized when I was about 7 years old. I got a Barbie doll and loved to do different hair styles on her, and since then I knew I loved hair styling very much.

2. What are the most requested styles in the salon at the moment? The most requested style right now is something similar to a “bob style”.

3. What are your predictions in hair/colour for this summer season? Short or mid-length hairstyles are going to be this summer season trends. A defined look but with a softer finish, which presents your character better. For the color, earth tones will be in-style!

4. What do you think is more important, for a client to tell you, so that you can get their hairstyle right for them? Of course there are many factors, I suppose it is important to know how much time they are willing to spend on their hair daily. The hairstylist has to design a hairstyle not only to complement the face and style of the client, but also address the styling habits of the client. Such is the extra step we take to deliver higher level of service to our clients.

5. We always like to ask stylists, what is their own particular favourite hairstyle of all time? Each stylist has their own favourite hairstyle. For myself, wash and wear style is my choice as it shows my character. 6. What are your favourite products right now? Label.M Sea Salt Spray because it is super easy to use and can create various kinds of hairstyles with no hassles. Also ALTERNA’s Modelling Clay because it is non-greasy, non-dust sticking, easy to apply on hair for quick style moulding and remoulding. The best thing is it smells great, a honeydew melon flavor and washes off easily. 7. If you had chosen another profession, what would it have been? If I weren’t a hairstylist, I would be a graphic artist I think. 8. What brand of scissors do you use for creating your cuts and looks? Fuji. 9. What tips can you give to up and coming hairstylists? Short hairstyles like “pixie cut” will be a hit, but again any styles that can bring out your confidence will look great. Sometimes it’s about the vision more than “the style”.

Damien Carney interview 1. When did you first realize you wanted to become a hair stylist and where did you start? At an early age, maybe around 12 years old, I didn’t realize at that time it would be hairdressing, but I knew that I would definitely do something creative with my career. I always found science and the arts very interesting and more stimulating. I decided on hairdressing because it blended the best of both worlds in science and art. 2. What are the most requested styles in the salon at the moment? Very interesting question! In my opinion, this never really changes, whomever the favourite celebrity or music icon is at that moment in time, they influence style demands. Whoever is the most popular on TV has a great impact on clients’ likes and dislikes at a given moment. In design, I’ve never followed that kind of direction. The key to the look they need is in making the best of what they have in appearance. We assist them by creating an image that lends itself toward their personal “Ideal” body shape, face shape, hair style, etc.. I look at what other hairdressers are doing with their clients. I absorb and think and do something slightly different with the client at all times. I find it works for me, as I can offer my experience and skills to that client. This makes me unique and appreciated by the clients I service. 3. What are your predictions in hair/color for this summer season? Short and bold. Clients want to wear a style that makes them feel good about their appearance. I like the fact that short hairstyle can include longer and shorter strands to give flexibility to a look. In this case, you get the best of both worlds, both short and long hair. I like the fact that strong hair color is back, but I use it only in areas to emphasis an element of the cut. I see primary colors on the hair but in a pretty way - blended, flowing and fluid. 4. What do you think is more important, for a client to tell you, so that you can get their hairstyle right for them? I think it’s actually the other way around. What is the hairdresser going to tell or communicate to the client? The hairdresser and client can see each other in many different ways. Both client and hairdresser have to first get on the same page. Discuss and debate what should be done. What’s achievable and what’s not. Saying no sometimes can be very powerful and mark your professional status, but be sensitive to the client. Often clients fall into two categories. 1) They have a problem requiring a solution such as fine hair needing more volume, or hair looks and feels damaged and may be difficult to manage. Or 2) a client is looking to change their hair, but not sure in what direction. The client needs ideas, reassurance and professional advice on what will work and what will not in your opinion.

5. What is your own particular favorite hairstyle of all time? A beehive. It essentially works from all angles and is flattering to virtually any and all face shape, hair texture, etc. It lifts the face in an upward direction therefore will lengthen the neck, lift and expose the cheekbones. It’s a hairstyle that repeats every season on every runway around the world, just different variations or adjustments to keep it modern.

6. Do you have a favorite culture you’re most fascinated by in terms of hairstyles? I like all cultures, because they view hair and beauty differently. I do particularly like “African” hair culture. I love the way they design head shapes and play with patterns and textures unlike any other cultures. I have books upon books of African hair and they are very inspiring. Hair is hair no matter what culture from which it originates. The hair might feel slightly different in texture and appearance. I absolutely love how we all treat and manipulate hair in different and fresh new ways. 7. What are your favorite products right now? Anything that is light and conditions the hair. I dislike when I can see product in the hair. I feel it makes it look very dated and old-fashioned. My all time favourite is a serum; you can use it on any hair, any hair texture, length or look. Every head of hair looks better with a drop or two. I like hair to look healthy. 8. If you had chosen another profession, what would it have been? A photographer, graphic designer, or anything to do with the arts. I like a profession that is constantly changing in some way. I hate routine. I like to feel that I’m learning some thing new every day. 9. What brand of scissors do you use? My own brand, DC London. Check out www.damiencarney. com where you can see them. I only use one type of scissor – I believe it’s up to the artist to bring the tool alive. I can use my scissors to create any texture, length or feel to the hair. I was trained that with one pair of high quality scissors you should be able to create anything. Once you rely on the scissor to do the job, then it’s over. 10. What tips can you give to up and coming hairstylists? Always follow your heart and instincts. Only listen to the wise with a proven track record. There are many ways to doing any one thing. Learn the best, most effective way of doing anything, but always do it with pride, passion and quality. These are the only qualities that set us apart from our competition. Be aware of the quick changing trends. What you learned yesterday might not be right for today. What you put out in effort and energy is what you’ll get in return. You attract what you project. Have fun and LOVE what you do.
