by Philip George Have a plan for growth. If you are always looking for a “stylist with a clientele”, you are not a success. You are reliant on other people to build your business. What kind of business owners put themselves in a position where they are relying on people they barely know in order to be successful? If this is your current strategy stop it! Start developing your own talent from within. BUILD something great whilst adhering to a good profitable business model. Stylists, who promise to bring big takings if they join your salon, usually demand high commissions and special treatment. They might suffer from over inflated egos, bad habits they developed in previous salons and they certainly will not respect your philosophy on how to service clients or become loyal team members that you want in order to make your salon unique and successful. Paying these stylists anywhere from 50 - 70% commission just because they promise a large revenue does not make your salon profitable after you have paid rent, product supplies, wages and other expenses. They are the ones making money, not you. Instead of building a solid sustainable business, you leave yourself at jeopardy when or if they leave. Building a profitable business takes time and a lot of investment. Start by searching for young talent that show enthusiasm, energy and trustworthiness. Invest in education, training, a mentorship program and moral fiber. Build their trust and loyalty through your actions, deeds and your motivation towards their success.

Instead of trying to compete with what the other salons pay in commission or wage rates, work out a system that gives everybody a good opportunity to grow, including you! Example: if the current industry rate of commission is 50% on gross takings: offer 35 - 40% instead with the guarantee that the remaining 10 - 15% will be invested in marketing and their continued education. This ensures that they get new clients through promotions and the enhanced tutoring you can now afford. It also benefits the salon’s name and image, as other hairdressers get to know about your reputation. You may offer higher commission rates as stylists progress and reach financial targets and good employee status. When your team see the good payback they get by your efforts in building their clientele, knowledge, and increased earnings, they will stay loyal to you and buy into the philosophy you promote. They will have no reason to look elsewhere. This ongoing business model will ensure your continued growth, loyalty and long-term sustainability: without being held ransom to insatiable hairdressers who only have their own best interests at heart. Ideal business model for salons: Here in Hong Kong, rent and labour costs are the two largest expenses, and they require daily vigilance from the salon owner. Product costs are typically the third-highest expense, but they are sometimes overlooked. A salon’s rent and labour costs will typically absorb up to 70% of revenue, or roughly two-thirds of the total. The remaining 30% of revenue has to cover everything else plus profit. A general rule of thumb is that you shouldn’t spend more than 30% of your income on rent.

Many Hair salons are missing the huge opportunity and profits provided by retail sales of products. Clients often purchase their requirements elsewhere as many stylist fear retail sales or have the attitude of only being a service provider. But retailing professional products is a profitable source of income for any salon with a potential of contributing up to 30% of a salon’s income. Salons should attractively place products in a high traffic area where customers will have a view of everything offered and all staff must have full product knowledge to offer solutions to customer needs and questions to encourage informed buying decisions. 資生堂星級髮型及化妝導師石塚由香特意從日本飛抵 香港擔任講師,向參與活動的香港髮型師,分享及示 範2015秋冬的潮流趨勢。為期兩天的活動,超過200 位髮型師參加,包括了髮藝班及研習坊兩大部份。

The seminar included examples of the latest New York, Paris and Tokyo Collections, SHISEIDO PROFESSIONAL seasonal trends and their new Primience Vibrant Reds and Crystallizing Qurl.

髮藝班展示了來自紐約、巴黎和東京時裝週的最新秋 冬資訊,資生堂的季度潮流造型方案,以及Primience 染髮系列中最新的Vibrant Reds胭彩系列和全新晶瑩 曲髮系列Crystallizing Qurl。

J-Club recently held a Dinner Gathering at the Pierside Bar & Restaurant in The Royal Pacific Hotel & Towers. During the evening, their philosophy “the joi of healthy hair” was introduced, featuring three exciting products (DUOLIGHT, Joico®Curl and Flip Turn). JOICO International Guest Stylist Ms. Natani Laas says, “JOICO is already very well known for its retail range here in Hong Kong, but their colour range has become more popular amongst Hairdressers. I am particularly interested in teaching how colour works, not only promoting its products. This is very important for Hairdressers to know and understand; only then can we start breaking the rules a little and become more creative. Education is a central part of JOICO’s philosophy.”

She also explained that the DUOLIGHT range has the ability to lift colour lighter whilst neutralizing unwanted under tones, “creating beautiful Butterscotch and Caramel shades”. These colours work very well with Balayage and “Ecaille” AKA “Tortoiseshell” techniques: creating smooth caramel tones. “The Ecaille technique is a slightly richer and darker version of your natural colour paired with golden highlights. The look, which began trending in Paris, tends to be darker at the roots and lighter at the ends – consider it a much more sophisticated version of the Ombré we already know,” said Natani.

He also senses the beginning of a change in attitude within the industry. “There is a new beginning in the air on how to develop the salon business and we are very much part of this new cycle,” he says.

New Star Hair Products Co. Ltd recently expanded their operations to a larger office and studio. Disconnect sat down with Mr. Simon Tso to find out more on how to run a successful distribution center. 為配合業務擴展,新星髮品有限公司最近 遷往了更大的辦公室和工作室。 Disconnect 美髮專業雜誌日前相約曹先生( Simon),探 討更多經營分銷中心的成功要訣。

Simon explained that most Salons are very keen to get support from product companies; he says “this is always a good opportunity for us”. For example, every year New Star takes a big group of stylists to Europe to attend the Revlon Professional’s Style Masters Show; they can learn so much from these types of events. They also invite foreign guest

When introducing the Revlon Professional range to Salons he explains that it is sometimes difficult for any salon to make a product change, “We usually start off by introducing retail and soft end products, only when the salon has become used to this and see the positive results, we then introduce the accompanying professional range such as colour, etc. But this is best done through our dedication to the education system we offer”. Revlon Professional produces 2 collections every year, and offers this education to both clients and new hairdressers: it includes video technical training and a whole range of other support systems, especially on how to adapt the European trends to suit Asian clients. “All stylists are welcomed: this way we can help everybody in the industry,” says Simon. If price is important for salon owners to decide on whether to bring in new products for use or retail and if a salon


suffers a downturn in business, rent and wages cannot be cut, so naturally, product sales will undergo a reduction. Simon explains that he overcomes this, by regularly visiting salons, offering friendship, help, support, and education. “It is important to us that we build reliable relationships during bad or good times. We want them to know that we are not only interested in selling products but that we care about their business and growth. Through this method, we help to diffuse the worry of price margins”. He believes that rent is always the biggest salon expense, followed by wage and commission. “It is impractical for a salon to maintain a healthy balance when they pay over 40% of their revenue in rent plus commissions that are too high. The whole industry needs to re-evaluate this current system and make positive changes”. In Hong Kong, many salons follow a particular culture of lowering their service price to compete with neighbouring competitors, instead of focusing on improving salon service, upgrading stylists’ skills and promote the best products available for their customers’ needs. “We have begun to notice a recent trend away from hiring freelance hairdressers, and start focusing on training the new young staff they employ, we are happy to see this, and salons that follow this system will always get more encouragement from us. We know of some salon owners that have worked hard and are dedicated to their business: they now enjoy great success, and some have been able to buy their own shops. We use these stories as good examples to other salon owners”. New Star recently presented the Revlon Professional Autumn / Winter collection to HK: “Revlon Professional x Chinology Academy 2015 Collection Show” and are busy launching American Crew and a host of other events lined up for the next few months.

More than 2,300 international exhibitors will enliven Cosmoprof Asia 2015, Asia’s largest international beauty industry fair to be held from 11 to 13 November at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event covers all sectors of the beauty industry including hair, cosmetics and personal care, nail, natural health, skincare, spa and packaging. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the exhibition will host 21 groups and national pavilions, including: Australia, Belgium, Brazil, California, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the USA. Other special initiatives will enrich the exhibition programme including Discover Trends presenting the most innovative products for men’s care, baby care and natural/organic trends. What special features are behind the patented technology of CREATE ION?

Create Co., Ltd’s headquarter

Could you explain your history and the reason for you to establish Create Co., Ltd? “I was born in Kyushu Island; my family owned several Salons led by my own mother. I established the company ‘Cosmo’ and started to supply various hair beauty products to salons”. Even though Cosmo was a latecomer to the industry, Mr. Kaizuka rapidly built a large portfolio of salon accounts by providing the services that customers had not experienced from the other distributors at that time. “By talking with stylists, I got to know their real demands, and then began to design and manufacture equipment to suit their needs, I focused on innovation and superior product design, then renamed the company ‘Create Co., Ltd’; dedicating itself to continuing innovation for the beauty market on a global scale”.

CREATE ION has original technology: combining ion generating matters from the natural world to enable ion processing in our products. Its power source is a multiplier effect of 3 elements: negative ion, far infrared ray, and wave motion. This creates a cluster effect of water molecules contained in our products, and amplifies its energy. It also facilitates metabolism in the skin and hair, and is recognized to have antibacterial, preservative and deodorant effects. In Japan, girls are used to reserving their time for hair and make-up before they go out, but Hong Kong is a fast paced city and people here prefer to invest time and money in salons, they seldom style hair at home”. “This is why we maintain collaboration and communication with famous hairdressers during the course of new product research and development. Together with our exclusive CREATE ION technology, we strive to provide the hairdressing industry with the most user-friendly, timesaving and quick-to-use styling tools”. What are your predictions for the Autumn/Winter trends? “Medium length hair will stay popular during autumn and winter this year, but it also depends on facial shape and hair texture. Creating big waves or a fluffy effect is easy for an airy/lightweight hairstyle”.
