We wanted people to ask themselves, is it modern or original? Without being able to pinpoint the exact era, the images remain timeless. The length through the top was kept super-long and we really pushed the shape. The texture through the top and the beard works beautifully against the short sides and back. He founded Disconnect Hair Magazine in 2009 in the hope of inspiring local hairdressers’ creativity and education. How can Hairdressing salons regulate their professional stock usage more efficiently ? Colours, perm lotions and treatments can often be hard to track; they can become a costly part for the business if not closely managed. Common problems can be: insufficient stock, wastage and theft. Thorough and regular stock taking is a first step all salon managers should implement. Teaching staff to be responsible, conscientious and honest is equally important. Teach staff: • How to calculate accurate quantities per application. • How to squeeze tubes efficiently and economically. • How to understand and read measurement cup levels. • How to add more during the client application if necessary. • How to keep only one box open with the tube visible at any one time on the shelves. • How to organize the products on the shelves by an orderly numbered display and category. • How to keep the shelves tidy, clean, and structured.

There can be nothing more frustrating for a salon owner than seeing discarded colour tubes that are only half used, or not having enough hair treatment due to wastage. How often is half the content in a bowl thrown away because it was inaccurately measured? Salons need to ensure that the mixing areas in the salon are spacious, efficiently designed and have plenty of workbench space, shelving and storage capability. If the space is cramped or not specifically designated, staff will have difficulty in performing their duties professionally. Young talent at Shiseido Professional Beauty Innovator Award 2014 促進跨媒界藝術交流

Taking the initiative to promote contemporary Asian Beauty with hair designers, Shiseido Professional recently held BEAUTY INNOVATOR.IN THE NAME OF ART ‘Hong Kong Selected Creations Exhibition’ at THE SPACE Gallery in Sheung Wan. The event shined the spotlight on young, potential hairstylists, contributing to the development of the local hair beauty industry. It was also the brand’s first open exhibition for free admission in Hong Kong, witnessed by 200 guests from the hair beauty and art industries as well as major media. The Beauty Innovator Award 2014 Hong Kong Finalists Award Presentation Ceremony was preluded by a catwalk presentation of the top entries that allowed guests to view the hairstyles, makeup and costumes of the contestants. Dick Cheng @ Reborn Hair, with his creation ‘The Victorious Lady General’ was recently announced as the Hong Kong Grand Prix Winner by the headquarters jury at Shiseido Professional, Japan.

Shiseido Professional致力推崇「與髮型師一起推動亞洲人的 當代美學」的理念,早前假座上環THE SPACE Gallery舉辦 BEAUTY INNOVATOR.IN THE NAME OF ART《香港賽 區優秀作品展》。 是次活動旨在發掘及表揚別具潛質的本地年青髮型師,為香 港髮型業的發展出一分力。這次也是品牌首度在香港舉辦公 開作品展覽,並免費開放予公眾參觀。多達200位分別來自髮 型界、其他藝術範疇和主要媒體的嘉賓應邀出席。 而Beauty Innovator Award 2014香港賽區入圍頒獎禮則於作 品展開幕翌日舉行,大會先安排了天橋秀讓在場嘉賓欣賞入 圍參賽造型的髮型、化妝及服裝特色,隨後即場公佈當中的 最後5強名單。入圍的 5強作品其後交由資生堂日本總部的 評審團選出香港賽區的冠軍,經過一輪嚴格的甄選,近日 終於公佈結果,由來自 Reborn Hair的 Dick Cheng憑著《勝 利的女將軍》奪得殊榮。

What struggles do Salon owners face today in Hong Kong?

You started your career in cosmetics before working in the Hair division, what differences do you notice in today’s market?

At different times, salons encounter different problems. We at SHISEIDO PROFESSIONAL hold retail and management seminars regularly in the hope that we can better understand the difficulties that Salon owners and Stylists face and offer them help. Rental of good space is often one of the challenges; but Salon owners always have a choice on the location to set up its business, according to how much rent they can afford. They also should to be thoughtful in choosing what products to use and sell to their customers so as to build up a professional image and enhance customer satisfaction. Commission payable to hairdressers seems to be the biggest expenditure for any salon. Quite often this is not negotiable. Retail from products often amounts to less than 10% of gross salon income; this is something that can be easily improved upon. Should product companies do more in helping salons become more profitable? As a leading product company, we do want to share this

The mainland visitors to Hong Kong have recently helped keep the retail in cosmetics active, but this cannot last forever and few hair salons benefited from this kind of tourism. Both the cosmetics and hair business need to focus on building loyalty amongst their regular clients for long-term sustainability. If in the case of Hairdressing salons, if Stylists take good and better care of their existing clients, the clients will be happy to stay with them and intensify their relationships, then Stylists do not always need to seek new clients to supplement their income. As the regional manager for both Hong Kong and Taiwan, what differences have you noticed between the two countries? Taiwanese salons and Hairdressers tend to hide their business dealings. They do not seem to want the authorities or establishments to know too much about how they conduct their businesses. By the same token, the Taiwanese Government does not actively support the industry with initiatives and most Hairdressing associations there are privately owned. Here in Hong Kong, the government has


created vocational training programs and as mentioned before, salons get a lot of support from the product companies here. Tell us more about the SHISEIDO PROFESSIONAL Beauty Innovator Award recently held here? BIA, now the biggest hair design, styling and photographic competition in Asia, has enjoyed its 2nd year anniversary. I am very happy with its success and progress. It is also exciting to me that so many young hairdressers were keen to participate. The skill standard from the 2014 contestants has improved immensely from the previous year, especially from some independent or smaller operated salons. Because we promote a Total Beauty image, the contest offered a unique experience for the contestants, as they had to focus on the whole being of their work, and not only on the models’ hair. They also benefited from SHISEIDO’s long heritage and support resources. What is in store for 2015? We will continue to adhere to the caring philosophy of ‘Omotenashi’ and provide clients with excellent products and services. Through marketing, retail sales consultation and salon education, we hope to open up new business opportunities and create stronger relationships with our salon partners. This will extend SHISEIDO’s ‘SALON BIHATSUDO’; we will also continue to collaborate with the government, organizations within the industry and institutes by sending our educators and ambassadors to deliver talks and seminars to students. What personal advice would you give a young hairdresser starting off in his or her career? Try to dedicate yourself to your job and have fun. Never give up: hairdressing is not an easy job and it takes a lot of discipline and hard work. Keep a positive mind and trust the people around you so you can learn from them. I have a motto I always adhere to: “Nothing is impossible, stay positive, have fun, surround yourself with good people and become generous with your time and involvement with charities and social programs, this helps lead to becoming a more valuable and humble person”.

香港的髮廊及其經營者正面對甚麽難題? 在不同時期他們有不同的困難,所以SHISEIDO PROFESSIONAL定期舉辦有關零售和管理的研討會,進一步 了解箇中因由及提供協助。目前,租金是其中一個難題,因為 開店的地點取決於他們對鋪租的承受能力。他們亦要小心選擇 使用和推銷產品,以建立良好的公司形象和顧客滿意度。至於

髮廊最大而又不可討價還價的開支-髮型師佣金,更是對營運 成本的一大挑戰。不過,我們發現產品零售只佔髮廊營業額不 足一成,絕對有很大的推進空間,幫助提升業績。

產品公司應否多推出措施來幫助髮廊提升盈利? 作爲一個美髮產品的領導品牌,我們感到責無旁貸,所以 SHISEIDO PROFESSIONAL不僅售賣產品,還有一個優秀團 隊向髮廊提供咨詢服務、業界資訊和專業建議,協助發展業 務、教育、管理和創意,提升髮廊質素和盈利。

在加入美髮行業之前,你曾經從事美容業。美容與美髮業的 發展,你有何看法? 近年,内地訪港旅客帶動了美容產品的零售業務,但這個效應 只是暫時性,而且很少髮廊受惠。我認爲,不論美容還是美髮 業,要業務長遠地持續發展,就要在現有顧客建立忠誠。以髮 廊為例,如果髮型師對現有顧客照料妥當,令他們樂意長期光 顧,深化關係,便無需經常開拓新客源來增補收入。

作為品牌的香港及台灣區總經理,你覺得兩地的美髮業有何 差別? 台灣的髮廊和髮型師傾向隱藏業務狀況,好像不想讓政府和有 關當局知道他們是如何營運,大部分美髮協會也屬私人性質; 同樣,台灣政府亦不會主動推出政策支持業界。香港政府則有 開辦職業培訓課程,產品公司亦為髮廊提供很多支援。

可否和我們分享多些最近舉行的SHISEIDO PROFESSIONAL Beauty Innovator Award? 這個全亞洲最具規模的造型攝影比賽已踏入第二屆,我很滿意 它的進展和成效。的確,看到這兩年那麼多年輕髮型師踴躍參 賽,我深感鼓舞,而2014年作品的技術水平亦較去年提升了很 多,尤其來自獨立和規模較小的髮廊參賽作品。我們亦將品牌 一直提倡的「全美學」Total Beauty概念引入比賽,即是說, 作品必須是包括髮型、化妝和服裝的整體創作,這不但帶給參 賽者獨一無二的體驗,還讓他們受益於資生堂逾百年的美學經 驗和資源。

The international hairdressing world came together in glamorous Monaco to recognize and celebrate the industry’s best talent at the International TrendVision Awards (ITVA) and to be inspired by the 2015 trend reveal. Now in its 12th year, the 2014 International TrendVision Awards remains one of the most prestigious events in the hairdressing industry. This year’s ITVA finalists – 60 stylists and colourists from 35 countries – competed in two categories, Color and Young Talent, with their looks inspired by the 2014 TrendVision trends, Urban Native and Borderline Beauty.

Edoardo Paludo 專訪 Davines全球創意染髮大使

“We are permanently surrounded by colours and we use them to generate emotions and feelings. The use of colours in a creative way is essential and not only means knowing shadows and nuances, but also creating them. For this reason we must devote time to experimenting, thinking creatively and being open minded.” Gifted with talent and passion, in 1996, Edoardo Paludo decided to broaden his professional horizons in London, joining the Trevor Sorbie team as Creative Technical Director and concentrating on experimentation with new colour techniques and trends, he devoted himself to training activities and collaborations with Angelo Seminara. Whilst with the Trevor Sorbie team, he won the ‘Best Art Team of the Year’ title three times. He is currently Davines’ new International Creative Color Ambassador. Is this your first time to Hong Kong? Yes it is, I have been traveling for the past two weeks and I was looking forward to coming here. I also can’t wait to go to Hong Kong’s computer centers and see what’s new; I am a fan of technology. The main reason for my visit is to help celebrate the 2nd anniversary of the Davines Club Hong Kong by conducting the Creative Coloring Mini-show and Workshop. It was impressive to see the hunger for learning here, the students were quite sophisticated and I was able to show them advanced techniques. My focus was on Salon owners; so not only could they share what they learnt with their staff but appreciate how new ideas are important to their business development and profitability. What techniques did you show? I introduced them to 2 new colour techniques, one being

how to produce a perfect colour graduation from darkness to light and how to create texture within the haircut. A popular trend at the moment is to backcomb the hair first, pushing 40% of the hair down to the roots, then apply colour to the remaining left out hair. This creates a beautiful natural diffusion of colour. I also emphasized the importance of preparing the hair before colouring. It is always important to set or style the hair before the colour application to make it easier to create desired effects and particular results. What else is important for a Stylist to remember? I spoke about the correct usage of styling products, it is too common for Stylists to throw too much products on the clients’ hair. We have so many great products on the market these days, but they need to be used in the right way, and to learn how they can help create different effects. When did you start your career as a Hairstylist? I was born in Italy and began my career when I was 16. Later on I moved to London to further polish my skills. In 1996, I joined Trevor Sorbie where I helped create new colour techniques and trends. This is where I met Angelo Seminara, we now collaborate together hosting up to 10 hair shows on average a year. We also take part in exhibitions, fashion shows and events, as well as working with photographers. You recently worked on the Woodland Collection, how it was conceived? Angelo and I created the Woodland Collection for Davines. It took 3 to 4 months and started with a concept first, followed by repeated colour testing, production of the colour palette and eventually styling. Nature and the evolving colour shades of the woodland was the inspiration for the

collection. We created a new wood knot colouring technique just for the assemblage. What colour and techniques will be popular for 2015? Personally I see gold and red tones having a revival again. But it is so important to work with the clients’ natural skin tones, their dress sense and profession. I always prefer infusing 2 to 3 natural tones to create texture and movement. Hairdressers too need to develop an interest in colouring to help build their business, and product companies need to produce more colouring tools and products to help the Stylists have flexibility and creativity.

Disconnect chats to Ms. Elaine Chan and Mr. Rico Cheung about the recently launched

YN Club 一個俱樂部的誕生 Elaine started the YN Club with a strong belief that the industry needed a lot more support that is already available. “I want to create a friendly environment where stylists can share and network with each other”, says Elaine. “There is too much fragmentation and division amongst the salons here. We need to break down the atmosphere of competitiveness and secrecy and promote a climate for sharing.” Rico the first Chairman of the club fully agrees. He feels the standard of work produced by local hair stylists need to be upgraded continuously so as to maintain our influence in the region. “A majority of hair stylists in the past were educated by the UK and European influences, but with the growing Chinese economy and the advancement of the other Asian countries in the region, we need to be careful not to fall behind. ” The Club plans a series of upcoming events, including a tour to a famous scissors manufacturing plant in Tokyo and a charity cut for the elderly. With a strong 500-club membership, the YN club hopes to continue to grow and become a major influence in the Industry.

How important is the right pair of Scissors? 工欲善其事 必先利其器

“Price is not the leading factor for me”, says Kolen Wong, Creative Director, Salon Core by IL Colpo , “ They should be ergonomic, comfortable and an easy fit for me. After 30 years experience, one really good pair is all I need.”

Jackie Wong, Salon Owner of Ming Beauty Salon agrees, but insists that a good pair of scissors must maintain sharpness. This helps deliver a smooth cut. His favorite size is the 6.5 inch length. “I use 3 types of scissors when cutting hair, different scissors allow me flexibility whether I am cutting, texturizing or precision styling.”

Lok Chan, Hair Stylist at Red Hill Salon believes that price does indeed guarantee quality. “For me a great pair of scissors must have good balance, weight and a comfortable fit.” Lok values his scissors and never lends them to fellow staff.
