Maryland/Delaware Disaster Relief equips volunteers to bring help, healing and hope in response to natural and manmade disasters throughout the Mid-Atlantic, across the United States and around the world. Disaster Relief Training is available to all believers who have a passion to serve others. Disaster response is a unique mission experience because of the sudden nature of the event, difficult conditions, and high expectations from other relief organizations and survivors. Our regular training events focus on discipline-specific training in two areas: feeding and recovery (chainsaw and flood recovery). These two disciplines account for our greatest mobilization of volunteers. Training is provided in other disciplines on an as-needed basis. In addition, all volunteers complete An Introduction to Southern Baptist Disaster Response, providing an overview of how Baptist disaster response began, how we respond, who we work with and what we do. 2016 Fall Training Dates The following dates are for Disaster Relief Training events. These are open to new and returning volunteers and will offer: Introduction to Disaster Relief (required for all new volunteers), Feeding and Recovery. Additional electives may be offered. Please note: although these trainings are open to participants of all ages, only those age 18 years or older are eligible to serve with the teams on disaster responses. Local Missions in Action by Carissa Beard

“Life changing” is how Richard (Rick) Marstiller describes the recent trip that Harvest Pointe Community Church took to southern WV in August. God had been working on Rick’s heart about missions, and although he did not feel ready to go on an international trip, he did feel God’s leading toward a domestic missions trip. When the flooding in WV occurred, Rick knew that was where God wanted him. He and 7 others from Harvest Pointe, just “jumped in.” After coordinating with Bruce Conley, our DOM and State Disaster Relief Director, Rick and his team hit the road determined to make a difference. ! Rick’s team delivered flood buckets to victims, installed drywall,

by street to clean and rebuild them.” When it was time for the team to come back home, Rick was hesitant to leave: “I hated to leave. They just need people working and helping. There is still so much to be done!”

Rick summed up his experience. “I’ve been a special-ed teacher for 20 years. But this. This was a completely different experience. On this trip God kept us safe. We had some close calls traveling down there, but He kept us safe. And safe on the worksites. It was amazing. And we had the opportunity to give people hope. And that’s what it’s all about. Giving hope.” ! Rick will be leading a trip back to the same area of WV October 26-29. He strongly urges anyone who is interested in serving in Disaster Relief to take the training courses (October 8 & 21-- see above for more info). If you feel as though God may be working in your life in this area, please contact Rick Marstiller at 304-671-7093 or r_marstiller@yahoo.com .

National Collection Week- November 14-21 It is almost time for the collection of shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. This is a wonderful ministry to impact children around the world with the Gospel through the gift of simple items. If you are interested in packing a shoebox, follow these simple steps: 1. Find a Shoebox. Start with an average-size cardboard or plastic shoebox. If you want to wrap it, cover the box and lid separately. 2. Girl or Boy? Decide whether you will pack a box for a girl or a boy, and the age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. 3. Fill with Gifts. Select a quality “wow” toy such as a doll, soccer ball with pump, or stuffed animal. Then add other fun toys, hygiene items, and school supplies. 4. Pray. Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift. You can also include a personal note and photo. 5. Follow your box labels. Donate $7 online and receive a tracking label to follow your box and discover the destination of your shoebox gift. 6. Drop-Off. Take your shoebox gift, to a local drop-off location during National Collection Week, November 14-21. The following BRBA churches are drop-off points: Covenant Church, 7485 Shepherdstown Pike, Shepherdstown, WV Faith Baptist Church, 2212 Jefferson Pike, Knoxville, MD First Baptist Church of Hagerstown, 15 High Street, Hagerstown, MD First Baptist Church of Thurmont, 7 Sunny Way, Thurmont, MD
