WHY JUNE IS A GOOD MONTH FOR AREA BAPTISTS … from Bruce M. Conley – Director of Missions In June, local supporters of SBC churches will have an unprecedented opportunity – the ability to attend a national meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention without having to pay to travel to do so. In recent years the SBC has been in New Orleans, LA and Houston, TX … but THIS year the denomination is coming to the city where Annie Armstrong was born and surrendered her life to Christian service – Baltimore, Maryland. For me – I am a Christian by conviction, and a Southern Baptist by choice. Are we a perfect denomination? NO WAY! But in many ways I am proud to be a Director of Missions in the SBC and here are a few reasons why:

1) THE RIGHT CONVICTIONS I appreciate that Baptists have convictions that are deep and biblical. The Baptist Faith & Message spells out in detail our total reliance on the word of God and the conviction that it is God’s guide book for life. In a time where many other Protestant denominations negotiate away the clarity of the scriptures on certain subjects - Southern Baptists do our very best to be committed to biblical authority and accuracy. We do our level best to stand strong on the social issues of the day—even in the face of stiff cultural opposition. We stand up for defense of the unborn, traditional marriage, the nuclear family, and religious liberty. As long as those issues are being confronted with much grace, love, care, and mercy – then I believe that we in the SBC are on the right track.

2) THE RIGHT MISSION I also believe that Southern Baptists are committed to the right mission. The more we mature as a people of God, the more vocal we become stating what we are FOR - rather than what we are AGAINST. Rather than standing at certain key points in history yelling “STOP”! … instead we are now known more for yelling “LET’S GO”! I see this permeating everything that we do as a denomination – from Disaster Relief - to the Great Commission mission that is conscientiously carried out by the IMB, NAMB, and every local church planter and missionary in every local church or ministry. The Great Commission work being done by Southern Baptists is extraordinary. In local Associations, and at state, national, and international levels, the total number of Great Commission initiatives Southern Baptists have undertaken is beyond what any corporation could plan and execute. And it’s all because of our belief in the autonomy of the local church, and the priesthood of the believer. This is fantastic – and it honors God, but it is not new. It’s been going on since 1845. For 170 years our common, Great Commission efforts have been Southern Baptists’ primary unifying force. The Cooperative Program has become the most effective method in the Protestant world to advance the cause of Christ worldwide.

THE CHALLENGE Many in our region have never attended an annual SBC Convention meeting because of the distance, or expense, or because they have little interest about the ins and outs of our denomination as a whole. It’s true that the greatness of the SBC does not rest in programs or in denominational machinery – we know that it rests in our churches and with the local Christians in those churches who hold the right convictions and are given to the right mission. But why not take advantage of the SBC coming to your back yard in June? We’ve done our best to inform you HOW, WHEN, and WHERE you can go to participate in this year’s convention, and most of it is FREE to attend. I know that you will be blessed if you can set aside some time to be in Baltimore with us, and who knows – you may come away with a new appreciation for being a Southern Baptist!

The Southern Baptist Convention has partnered with Parking Panda, the nationwide leader in online parking reservations, to offer the ability to purchase guaranteed parking passes at several parking locations within easy walking distance to the Convention Center. Parking is very limited around the city and many locations will fill up, so it is strongly recommended that you purchase parking passes for the convention if driving. Once purchased, parking passes will be instantly emailed to you and guarantee you access to your selected location. Save money and time by reserving a parking space near the Southern Baptist Convention at the Baltimore Convention Center now. By booking with Parking Panda you can avoid the hassle of parking in downtown Baltimore. Park happy at the Southern Baptist Convention Baltimore with Parking Panda!

Beco ming a C hu rc h Me s se nge r The Annual Meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention consists of representatives, or "messengers," as they are called, from cooperating churches, who gather to confer and determine the programs, policies, and budget of the convention. Each church may be represented by up to 10 messengers, depending on church size and Cooperative Program giving amounts, ensuring equal accessibility for small and large congregations alike. Messenger cards which certify the information required by Article III of the SBC Constitution and SBC ByLaw 8 can be obtained by any church from the state convention with which they are affiliated. Members interested in becoming messengers should contact their pastors for information on the appropriate process of approval applicable in their church.

We welcome to the BRBA team Mrs. Terry Wilburn the new editor of the Blue Ridge Baptist Association newsletter, the 411. Terry has extensive experience in Associational missions and ministry as she served as the administrative assistant in the Prince George's Baptist Association for 16 years. Terry recently moved from Upper Marlboro, MD to Wild & Wonderful West Virginia with her husband Dennis. They have two sons, and just became first time grandparents on April 22, when little Madison Eliana Wilburn arrived on the scene! Terry and Dennis have joined their local SBC church Old Fields Baptist Church in the Potomac Highlands Association of WV. They are already involved in the food ministry of the church. Feel free to connect with Terry directly about any items of suggestions that you have for the BRBA newsletter by emailing her at wterri58@gmail.com.

BRBA report on honoring Secretaries By Mae Argilan She is able to make coffee, answer emails, unjam the copier, and pray with someone on the phone all at the same time. She rarely wears a red cape with matching boots, but she swoops in to save the day on a regular basis. She's the person who knows everything going on in the church, but keeps everyone's confidence. She is your church secretary, and she is the one you turn to when you want to plan a party. So, we thought it was about time to shine a spotlight on these unsung heroes. During Administrative Professionals week in April we hosted a luncheon for the secretaries in BRBA at Dutch’s Daughter restaurant in Frederick on Administrative Day. Six administrative assistants were able to attend. There was great food and conversation, and we all got to know and appreciate EACH other even more. Thank you, church secretaries throughout the tri-state area‌

we appreciate everything you do!
