Philly kicks off Obama Pride Council OKs site sale for LGBT senior residences

By Jen Colletta jen@epgn.com Days before the start of Pride month, supporters of President Obama mobilized to launch their own Pride initiative. “Obama Pride: LGBT Americans for Obama” kicked off this week in cities across the country, including at a launch party Tuesday night at Woody’s. “This is about engaging the LGBT community in our efforts on the ground,” said Jamie Citron, Obama for America National LGBT Vote Director, about the new campaign on a conference call this week. “One of the most powerful tools this campaign has is our ground team and the volunteer teams we’re building across the country. We want to make sure LGBT communities are a core part of the program and the team as we move forward towards victory in November. It’s not just about voter turnout, it’s about making sure the LGBT community is part of the effort on the ground.” The Philadelphia celebration included backing from local LGBT activists and advocates, as well as remarks by Wade Davis, an openly gay former National Football League player. The state legislator who has been at the forefront of the fight against LGBT and women’s rights this week introduced a measure designed to defund Planned Parenthood, which could have implications for the agency’s HIV work. Pennsylvania Rep. Daryl Metcalfe (R12th Dist.) on Wednesday submitted legislation titled the “Whole Woman’s Health Funding Priority Act,” which would mandate that health facilities that provide abortion services, largely thought to be targeted at Planned Parenthood, be placed at the bottom of the state’s health-funding priorities. Planned Parenthood’s abortion services account for just 3 percent of its program-

ming, but Metcalfe’s bill could prevent funding for other agency services, such as HIV and STD testing and counseling, cancer-prevention services and affordable birth control for low-income families. Last year, the agency provided more than 200,000 STD tests and 40,000 cervical-cancer screenings in Pennsylvania. More than 120,000 individuals seek services from the Commonwealth’s 42 Planned Parenthood agencies annually. Metcalfe’s measure, which has 34 cosponsors, was authored by Susan B. Anthony List, an anti-abortion agency that also crafted similar legislation that passed in Arizona earlier this year. A number of other states are also currently considering measures to defund Planned Parenthood. ■

City Council last week unanimously approved legislation that will authorize the sale of the city property on which an LGBTfriendly senior living facility is slated to be constructed. Council adopted Resolution 120449 May 17, to allow the Redevelopment Authority to execute the redevelopment contract for the facility, planned for 249-257 S. 13th St. The project is being spearheaded by the Dr. Magnus Hirschfield Fund with developer Pennrose Properties. The RDA board earlier this month voted unanimously to sell the land, initiating the Council measure. Councilman Mark Squilla (D-1st Dist.) introduced the bill during last Thursday’s session, and the rules PAGE 22

Ravi gets 30 days in jail By Jen Colletta jen@epgn.com The former Rutgers University student at the center of the Tyler Clementi case will serve less than a month in prison for his crimes. A New Jersey judge on Monday sentenced Dharun Ravi to 30 days in prison for his role in spying on his roommate, which a jury found to be motivated by bias. Ravi will report to the Middlesex County prison May 31 to begin his sentence. Reportedly, he’ll only spend 20 days in the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center, as state regulations automatically truncate a 30-day sentence with 10 days for good behavior. 11th annual trans conference grows in scope and size By Jen Colletta jen@epgn.com T h e P h i l a d e l p h i a Tr a n s - H e a l t h Conference returns next week with a broad spectrum of offerings for personal and community exploration. The 11th annual PTHC will run May 31-June 2 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, with more than 200 panel discussions and workshops. New to this year’s lineup is a series designed for medical providers to garner Continuing Medical Education credits. Presented by the Trans Medical Education Initiative, the program will consist of sessions that allow new and veteran providers to offer high-quality, informed care to transgender patients. This year’s conference, a program of Mazzoni Center, will also focus on youth, with the launch of the first-ever Youth Summit.

Held May 31, the summit will feature opportunities for transgender young people to explore the issues they face and learn about ways to take an active role in representing their community. PTHC will allow guests to look at issues going on well beyond the Philadelphia borders, and this year’s event will be more universal than ever, as organizers created sessions devoted to targeted areas like Southern and Eastern Africa and South Asia. Conference logistical coordinator Jacsen Callanan said that 165 people from throughout the country, and in other places across the globe, have worked on programming for the event. “We’ve had 22 advisory boards who made recommendations and outreach to develop programming from their areas,” Callanan said. “It’s a different process than we’ve had in the past but it went exceptionally well. We did more tar-

geted outreach that allowed us to grow programming in certain areas that never had targeted programming. So this year we have a whole series for sex workers where we’d never been able to do anything much on this topic before because we didn’t have that outreach that we now have.” Workshops are free but registration is recommended. The conference will feature a keynote address by Louis Mitchell, a minister and the first openly trans board member of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. This month marks the 10-year anniversary of Philadelphia’s adoption of transgender protections in its nondiscrimination law, and Callanan said Mitchell is a great fit for the current tenor in the transgender community. “Louis Mitchell is someone who has a really positive outlook on things and is excited about the movement the com-

munity is making. That’s one of the big reasons we picked him,” Callanan said. “We’re going into our second decade as a conference and having someone whose outlook is so bright and joyous is important at this turning point, when we’re starting to see better positive coverage of trans issues in the media and seeing some movement forward in the area of trans rights. He can speak to the power we have as a community and how important that we keep our heads up and keep moving forward.” The Youth Summit will also see keynotes from longtime New York City transgender activist Mya L. Vazquez and transgender music artist Ryan Cassata. PTHC is expected to draw about 2,500 people, a 20-percent increase from last year. For more information, visit www.transhealth.org. ■

Rutgers study: Grandparents accepting of LGBTs By Jen Colletta jen@epgn.com

A new study out of Rutgers University has shed light on familial relationships rarely examined with an LGBT lens. A report released earlier this month found that grandparents are more likely than not to accept their LGBT grandkids. Kristin Scherrer, an out assistant professor in the Rutgers School of Social Work, interviewed 60 individuals from 25 different families about the dynamics of having an openly LGBT grandchild. Scherrer said she focused her clinical practice work primarily on LGBT youth and saw a gap in research when it came to grandparent relationships. “I heard so many stories of youth coming out to their extended families and their grandparents, and that’s a topic that’s just brushed aside in literature,” she said. “There’s really nothing out there about the idea of coming out to grandparents and their responses, other than anecdotal evidence that had us thinking that they would react negatively.” That was not so, according to Scherrer’s research. Of the 32 grandparents interviews, 19 were rated as “accommodating” toward their LGBT grandchildren — a label ascribed when the grandchild experienced at least three instances of support, such as having his or her partner invited to family functions by the grandparent or having a grandparent defend his or her orientation to others. Acceptance was more readily garnered if the grandchild followed conventional gender norms. Despite the support, nearly all of the

accommodating grandparents had some level of anti-LGBT bias, revealed through questions about marriage equality and other LGBT issues. “I was surprised at how even the grandparents who had negative ideas about what it means to be gay or lesbian were still accepting of the grandchild,” she said. “They just wanted to keep the grandchild in their family and keep up a relationship. They said they would find ways to overlook or deal with the fact that they were gay and were so dedicated to wanting to keep their grandkids in their lives that they were willing to do a lot of work to make that happen.” The dynamics among the family members varied, Scherrer said. In some families, the parents helped their kids to disclose to the grandparents but it also happened in reverse in some families. “Occasionally grandparents with the more accepting attitudes — toward their grandchildren, not necessarily toward gayness itself — did the work of talking to the parents,” she said. “I expected to see the first way, but I was surprised at how much work the grandparents did to speak with their own kids about how they need to be accepting.” Much of Scherrer’s research focuses on LGBT issues, and she said she’s eager to use this study as a jumping-off point to examine the familial relationships among young people who are not out, or semi-out, to grandparents and other family members. “Most of the work we do is just on the parent-child relationships and I’d like to see that expanded more broadly to think about entire family systems, how multiple family members are affected and how other family members can be sources of strength and support,” she said. ■

HIV education takes spotlight in June By Jen Colletta jen@epgn.com As Philadelphia gears up to celebrate June as LGBT Pride Month, it is also preparing to honor AIDS Education Month. Philadelphia FIGHT will kick off AEM with an opening reception next week, which will be followed by four weeks of activities designed to educate and empower locals around HIV prevention and treatment. All AEM events, including the opening reception, are free and open to the public. The opening event will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. May 31 at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, 19 S. 22nd St., a new location. The annual reception will include the presentation of the Kiyoshi Kuromiya awards, named for FIGHT’s founder, to Mazzoni Center education manager Louie Ortiz, Dr. Jennifer Cohn of the Infectious Diseases Division at the University of Pennsylvania and the AIDS Law Project of Pennsylvania. This year’s slate of events will have a special focus on youth. New to the AEM lineup is “Antidote,” a breakdance competition for teens put on by dance4life Philadelphia, which raises awareness of HIV prevention through dance. The winner of the contest will receive

$1,000, and all guests who receive an HIV test at the event or prior at the Youth Health Empowerment Project will be entered to win an Xbox 360. “Youth are significantly affected by HIV, and we’ve identified this population as an area we need to concentrate on,” said FIGHT director of development and communications Mark Seaman. “We want to take education out of the classroom and put it in a new and interesting format.” The contest will be held from 5-11 p.m. June 15 at Pine Street Community Center, 401 Lombard St. The Crystal Ball, also designed to reach youth, will be held from 7 p.m.-midnight June 23 at University of the Arts’ Hamilton Hall, 320 S. Broad St., in collaboration with The Colours Organization. The event will include HIV testing and prevention messages amid the ballroom competition. Seaman said last year’s ball, which returned after a hiatus, was a “phenomenal event,” drawing more than 800 guests. Outreach will be done to other targeted populations throughout the month, with events such as the annual Faith Leaders and Community Summit, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. June 9 at DoubleTree Hotel, 237 S. Broad St. Guests can take part in a number of panel discussions designed to explore the intersection of faith and HIV/AIDS communities, a topic that will be addressed by keynote

speaker and former Philadelphia mayor the Rev. Dr. W. Wilson Goode. FIGHT executive director Jane Shull said Goode has a long record of support for HIV/ AIDS causes — including his mandate during his mayoral term that the Philadelphia prisons provide condoms. “For a long time, we were the only county jail in the United States in which condoms were available to help stop the spread of HIV,” Shull said. “And [Goode] also insisted that we use city funds to fight the disease early in the epidemic. Before Ryan White funding was available, the percentage of funds that the city of Philadelphia was using to fight AIDS was higher than the percentage of funds being used nationally, and that’s because of him.” Once he left city government, Goode, a longtime FIGHT board member, continued to bring HIV-prevention work to the pulpit in his role as a pastor, Shull said. The annual Prison Healthcare and Reentry Summit is now in its 10th year, and this year will be held from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. June 19 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, 12th and Arch streets. Participants will include Philadelphia Prison Commissioner Louis Giorla and keynote speaker Dr. Howard Dean Trulear, director of the Healing Communities Prison Ministry and Prisoner Reentry Project at the Philadelphia Leadership Foundation.

The Convention Center will also host the 13th annual Prevention and Outreach Summit, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. June 14. The conference will offer discussions and workshops for people of all interests — those living with HIV, physicians and health-care workers, researchers, prevention and outreach workers and others. Among the invited guests are Dr. Kenyatta Gilbert, founder of the Preaching Project, and Timothy Brown, known as the “Berlin Patient,” who says he was cured of HIV after receiving bone-marrow transplants. Seaman noted that, serendipitously, Wilma Theater is running “Angels in America,” which centers on the AIDS epidemic in its early years, throughout June. From 7:30-9 p.m. June 25, the Wilma, 265 S. Broad St., will host a discussion about local HIV prevention and treatment efforts. The event will be moderated by William Way LGBT Community Center executive director Chris Bartlett and the city’s director of LGBT affairs Gloria Casarez. Participants do not need to purchase tickets for “Angels in America” to attend. The month will round out with the annual HIV Testing Day June 27 at locations throughout the city. New regs seek to combat prison rape By Jen Colletta jen@epgn.com The U.S. Department of Justice last week issued regulations to strengthen the implementation of a law that seeks to alleviate sexual victimization in the nation’s prisons. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder last Thursday released a comprehensive mandate to guide the rolling out of the Prison Rape Elimination Act, passed in 2003 but which has lacked national standards for implementation. The rules will immediately go into effect in all federal prisons, and states will have one year to comply or could face a loss of federal funding. To coincide with the regulations, the Bureau of Justice Statistics last week released the results of a survey of former state inmates, which found that 39 percent of gay male inmates had been sexually victimized, compared with 3.5 percent of heterosexual male inmates. Among the stipulations in the new rules is the provision that facilities must operate a zero-tolerance policy against prison rape, and strengthen LGBT protections. Facilities must now evaluate incoming transgender inmates for gender-segregated housing on a case-by-case basis, as opposed to simply relying on biological sex. Shawn Hawes, public-information officer for the Philadelphia Prison System, said the local system already has a zero-tolerance policy and currently conducts medical and psychological evaluations to determine proper housing for LGBT inmates. Leon King, openly gay former Philadelphia Prison Commissioner, said the strengthened trans protections in the regulations are one of the most noteworthy aspects of the order. “That’s a very important issue because there’s often a longstanding prison tradition that if you have a penis you go with the men, and if you have a vagina you go with the women. But that’s old thinking,” he said. “We always talked about, if you look like a woman, you talk like a woman, you have breasts and you’re taking drugs to make you look more like a woman, but you have a penis, why would you be housed with men? We can’t assume that that would be the safest thing for everyone. So it’s really good that this should be done on a case-by-case basis.” The regulations further require that all agencies must train employees on respectful searches of trans and intersex inmates, who will now be given the option to shower separately from other inmates. Agencies will also be prohibited from segregating LGBT inmates to the same section of housing. When cases of alleged sexual victimiza-

tion do arise, agencies will not be permitted to advise an informal resolution of the grievance, and inmates cannot be asked to file the complaint with an alleged abuser. The regulations also order that no time limit be imposed on the filing of a grievance. Hawes said PPS is already in compliance with the majority of the regulations, although the system will need to designate a PREA compliance coordinator and expand its video-surveillance system. When an incident is alleged in PPS, Hawes said the prison contacts the Philadelphia Police Department, the victim is transported to a local hospital for a rape kit and the investigation is handled by police. In 2011, 19 total alleged sexual assaults were reported in Philadelphia prisons — nine of which were inmate-on-inmate attacks, and the rest of which were attacks on inmates by staff. Eight of the 10 alleged staff-initiated incidents occurred at Riverside Correctional Facility. The prisons use a definition of sexual assault that includes “rape, any acts or attempts to commit acts which involve sexual contact, sexual abuse or assault, intentional touching, either directly or through clothing of the genitalia, anus, groin, breast, inner thighs or buttocks.” King noted that it’s difficult to know how pervasive sexual victimization really is, as many victims may be unwilling to come forward. “People are afraid to report it, so it’s hard to get a handle on how widespread it really is,” King said. While King said the rule helps “raise the profile” of sexual victimization, it will take commitment from the federal administration and facilities to ensure proper implementation. “The question is the audit and training, and how well this will be enforced,” King said. “It’s great to have policies like this but if no one’s auditing them and making sure they’re working, then they’re meaningless.” The success of the LGBT provisions will also be contingent upon a concentrated effort on modernizing the prison environment for LGBT people. “It’s hard to change the culture of an institution so it’s very important that people keep on the Federal Bureau of Prisons to do that,” he said. “It’s great to train employees on LGBT issues and on having sensitivity toward LGBT inmates, but if the inmates don’t feel comfortable coming in and revealing that information, it’s a bunch of nonsense. People are scared to death to tell anyone they’re gay and that’s what we need to be working to change so these policies can really be effective.” ■

A panel of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration last week took steps to advance what would be the first in-home HIV test kit. The FDA advisory panel recommended unanimously May 15 that the agency approve the OraQuick In-Home HIV Test, made by OraSure Technologies Inc., based in Bethlehem. The FDA is expected to announce its decision in the next few months. The same FDA panel earlier this month recommended approval of Truvada, an antiretroviral drug thought to be effective in preventing HIV transmission through sexual contact. If approved, the OraQuick test would be available for purchase for under $60. The test involves a mouth swab and takes about 20 minutes to complete. The first phase of the OraQuick trial had one false positive among the more than 5,300 negative tests, with eight false negatives among the 114 positive participants, for an overall accuracy rate of 93 percent. OraQuick is currently available to medical professionals and has a 99-percent accuracy rate when administered by professionals. The panel said the test would diagnose about 45,000 new HIV cases each year and miss about 3,800. The board estimated that the product would prevent about 4,000 new transmissions a year. Gary Bell, executive director of BEBASHI, said that he is overall in favor of the concept of an HIV home test, but is concerned about its reliability. “We don’t want to give people a false sense of security, especially people who are very sexually active and may be having unprotected sex,” Bell said. But Bell noted that any product that can “give us one more tool in our arsenal” to fight HIV is a step in the right direction.

Action AIDS executive director Kevin Burns said the cost could be prohibitive for some consumers. “Anything that helps us identify folks who are HIV-positive and not aware of their diagnosis is a good thing but this may have a limited impact because of the cost,” he said. “But for people who have the resources to buy this and who are not currently getting tested, I think it’s a good thing.” Having such an option could lessen the fears that some could experience in getting tested in a medical environment, said Jane Shull, executive director of Philadelphia FIGHT. “People are reluctant to get tested in almost any setting so the more options people have, the better,” she said. Ron Powers, executive director of Mazzoni Center, also said any effort to expand the pool of people getting tested is a good one, as long as it’s done properly. “We believe strongly that people who are at risk for HIV should get tested. Whether they do that at a community-based site like Mazzoni Center, through their medical provider or with a take-home test, the important thing is that they know their status — then, if negative, take steps to reduce their risks or, if positive, seek appropriate medical care,” Powers said. “We cannot stress enough the importance of having support before, during and after taking the test. As long as those supports are available and the cost of the test is not prohibitive, we believe that the take-home test may be another means of getting more people tested.” Some critics of the test have questioned, citing the accuracy rate, if regular consumers will be able to understand how to perform the test. If the test makes it to shelves, Shull said it will be incumbent upon HIV/AIDS service providers to redouble efforts to educate consumers that the disease is treatable and about the steps that they can take to receive proper care. ■

No remorse, no apology This week has seen friends and foes of the LGBT community in action, some taking heat and some getting the equivalent of a slap on the wrist. In a case that’s gained national attention, a New Jersey judge Monday sentenced former Rutgers student Dharun Ravi to 30 days in jail and three years’ probation for spying on his roommate’s encounter with another man with a webcam in 2010. His roommate, Tyler Clementi, committed suicide shortly after the incident. A jury found Ravi guilty of 15 counts of bias intimidation, invasion of privacy and related charges, but not a hate crime, and he faced up to 10 years in jail. That Judge Glenn Berman determined that 30 days in jail was fair punishment has perplexed lawyers, activists and Clementi’s family. During sentencing, the judge noted that Ravi hadn’t apologized — and he still hasn’t. Instead, he comes off as aloof and cocky, as though he is the victim in this incident. While he didn’t cause physical harm to Clementi, Ravi’s actions certainly had an effect on his roommate. To conclude otherwise is naïve. It’s apparent that Ravi hasn’t experienced discrimination based on an immutable trait such as sexual orientation. (He may perhaps, justly or unjustly, be discriminated against because of his actions.) Following his sentencing, it was reported that Ravi didn’t apologize because he thought it would fall on deaf ears and wouldn’t make a difference. Again, this is naïve. While some, such as Clementi’s brother, might have felt the apology wouldn’t have mattered, wouldn’t have prevented Clementi’s suicide, it would have demonstrated that Ravi understood the impact of his actions. Whether Ravi’s actions were insensitive, childish, a prank or something more sinister, failing to see that one’s behavior can affect others is troubling. To wit, Webster defines psychopathic personality as “a person whose behavior is largely amoral and asocial and who is characterized by irresponsibility, lack of shame or remorse, perverse or impulsive (often criminal) behavior ... ” Dictionary.com defines psychopath as “a person with a psychopathic personality, which manifests as amoral and antisocial behavior, lack of ability to love or establish meaningful personal relationship, extreme egocentricity, failure to learn from experience.” It’s that last phrase that is perhaps the most disappointing about Ravi’s public comments, and the statements his parents have given. Whether or not he realized it or meant it, Ravi’s actions contributed to the suicide of a gay college student. After he serves his jail and probation sentence, he’ll go on to live the rest of his life. Tyler Clementi won’t. ■

It should be a surprise to no sentient being that by coming out in favor of marriage equality, President Obama opened the floodgates for the antigay crazies. Mind you, this is not his fault, nor is it really a bad thing. I mean, it’s not like these people haven’t always been out there hating gays. But when the tide starts turning toward equality and justice, those against such a turn are going to fight that tide every inch of the way. This is, perhaps, especially true in North Carolina, since they just passed their whole “gays marrying is horrible” amendment. Enter Charles L. Worley, pastor at Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden, N.C. I would say that Obama’s marriage-equality announcement inspired Worley’s May 13 sermon, but “inspired” is just not the right word to use for such a hate-filled rant. “Our president getting up and saying that it was alright for two men to marry or two men to marry — I tell you right now I was disappointed bad,” Worley says, “but I’ll tell you right there, as sorry as you can get the Bible’s against it, God’s against it, I’m against it and, if you’ve got any sense, you’re against it.” Got that? The Bible, God and Worley all agree. Which means you must agree, otherwise you’re an idiot. The problem is, of course, that the Bible doesn’t say anything about marriage equality, and I have a hunch Worley doesn’t have a direct line to God. Because if he did, God would change His number and unfriend Worley on Facebook. Why? Because of what he says next. “I figured a way to get rid of all the lesbians and queers,” Worley says in his sermon, delivered on Mother’s Day for Christ’s sake. “But it couldn’t get past the Congress. Build a great, big, large fence — 150 or 100 miles long — put all the lesbians in there, fly over and drop some food. Do the same thing for the queers and the homosexuals and have that fence electrified so they can’t get out. Feed ’em

and you know what, in a few years, they’ll die out. Do you know why? They can’t reproduce.” Oh, wow. This plan is such a great combination of various human-rights abuses. It’s hard to know where to even begin, although I suspect that someone’s been brushing up on his WWII history and cruising the Minuteman website. First of all, where would these big fenced areas be built? And would there be two separate areas, one for lesbians and another for queers and homosexuals? I’m assuming yes since you want to stop reproduction. Also, what is the difference between queers and homosexuals for the sake of this argument? You indicate that the areas would be in the neighborhood of 100-150 miles long, but how wide (it seems like a really critical detail. Six feet like a jail cell or a grave, maybe)? When you say “drop some food” do you mean, like, once, or on a continual basis? And, really, why bother with food at all if your intention is to “get rid” of them? Heck, why bother with this plan at all if you want them all dead? There are quicker ways to kill people. But maybe in your mind your plan allows the whole thing to be put in God’s hands, thus making it all very Christian nice-nice. A bigger question is that once this plan is completed, what do you propose be done with all of the straight people who keep giving birth to gay people? ■

On a historical note, this year marks the 10th anniversary of the addition of gender identity to Philadelphia’s Fair Practices Ordinance. The protections apply to public accommodations, housing and employment and are enforced by the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations. (City Council passed the bill on May 16, 2002, and it was signed into law by then-Mayor John Street on May 29, 2002.) Attorneys for the city this week filed several legal forms in federal court, clearing the way for an appeal to move forward in the local Boy Scouts eviction case. The city wants to evict the Cradle of Liberty Council from a city-owned building on 22nd Street near the Ben Franklin Parkway. But in 2010, a federal jury ruled that the eviction process interfered with the council’s first-amendment right to exclude gays. The Scouts remain in the building, but the city is appealing the jury verdict in the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. If the city hadn’t filed the forms by May 22, the appeal would have been dismissed, according to a letter sent by Third Circuit Court of Appeals Clerk Marcia M. Waldron. “If you fail to comply, the case will be dismissed,” Waldron wrote on May 8. The city filed the forms on May 21. “We challenge whether the evidence and the law support [the] jury determination,” the city wrote on one of the forms. “We also ask for a new trial based upon misleading, erroneous and inconsistent jury instructions and jury interrogatories.” That form also states that a federal judge was wrong in awarding the Scouts $877,122.07 in attorney fees to be paid by the city. The award was “based on improper rates and an incorrect calculation of the number of hours,” the form states. Other information contained on the forms specifies the attorneys who will be handling the appeal, the procedure for ordering a court transcript and the civil-rights nature of the dispute. The next major step is for the court to issue a scheduling order.

Growing up in the church, Davis said he wasn’t exposed to the topic of sexuality in his youth but began to understand his own orientation in his junior year of high school. “I had heard the terms when I was younger, but I didn’t really understand what it meant,” he said. “But when I finally started to realize that I was gay, I was like, ‘Oh shit.’” Davis kept his realization to himself for years, however. “I thought I had to just put it away, in a closet for lack of a better word, and focus on football and my grades,” he said. “I loved playing sports, and I believed that if I came out, that would be taken away from me because people would question my masculinity.” Davis said homophobia was most prevalent in the locker room during his high-school years, an attitude that faded throughout college and into the NFL. While Davis said many believe that the sports world is one of the last bastions of homophobia, he gradually saw that “most athletes feel that as long as you do your job on the field, they don’t care what you do off the field.” Once he got off the NFL field, he returned to Colorado and said the pressures of hiding his identity became too much.

Scotland rallies for bisexual Malawian woman facing deportation A bisexual Malawian mother is fighting to stay in Scotland with her three children over fears that her family would be subjected to homophobia and genital mutilation in Africa. Angeline Pirira Mwafulirwa could be deported back to Malawi, where homosexuality is currently illegal. Mwafulirwa arrived in Scotland with her husband in 2006, but left him for a woman once in the United Kingdom. Now, she fears she could be sent back to Malawi and face the ire of her ex-husband and his family. Mwafulirwa also believes her two daughters could be subjected to female genital mutilation, and be married off by 14. Mwafulirwa is being supported by asylum advocates in Scotland — she recently had a meeting with Scottish officials, who are reviewing her case. Mwafulirwa’s story is similar to that of another LGBT Malawi woman, Florence Mhango. That woman was not granted asylum and her whereabouts are not known.

Disneyland champions gay rights in Japan Disneyland has become an unlikely champion of gay rights in Japan, allowing same-sex couples to marry on its premises, even though same-sex relationships have no legal recognition in the country. Disneyland Tokyo has announced this week that it would allow gay couples to wed on its grounds, after one 27-year old woman, Koyuki Higashi, who wanted to marry her partner Hiroko, inquired about it. Higashi wrote on her blog that she was originally told that the ceremony would only be possible if they were dressed “like a man and a woman.” However, the Tokyo Disney Resort eventually confirmed that this was a misunderstanding, and that same-sex couples were welcome to have ceremonies at the resort, although not in the chapel due to what they described as “Christian teachings.” The only remaining obstacle, however, is money. A ceremony in Cinderella’s Castle, with the main Disney characters on the guest list, would cost 7.5 million Yen ($93,847). However, in a country where homosexuality is still taboo and the first openly gay politician was elected last year, the news was greeted with enthusiasm by local gay-rights activists.

Malawi: New president ‘to decriminalize homosexuality’ The Malawian president has said she will repeal the laws that make it illegal to be gay in the central African state, it has been reported. In a speech to parliament, president Joyce Banda

said, “The Indecency and Unnatural Acts laws shall be repealed.” Banda took office last month after President Bingu wa Mutharika died of a heart attack. Mutharika pardoned two citizens on “humanitarian grounds only” after they were charged on homosexuality offenses. Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga had attempted a marriage ceremony, with confusion over whether the latter identified as a trans woman in some reports. Pardoning the couple from charges of gross indecency and unnatural acts, Mutharika had said: “These boys committed a crime against our culture, our religion and our laws. However, as the head of state, I hereby pardon them and therefore ask for their immediate release with no conditions.” In December 2011, the Malawian Justice Minister, Ephraim Chiume, included the country’s antigay laws On a list of legislation he wants reviewed, saying the rules may not reflect “public opinion.” Chiume said, “In view of the sentiments from the general public and in response to public opinion regarding certain laws, the government wishes to announce to the Malawi nation that it is submitting the relevant laws and provisions of laws to the Law Commission for review.”

Zimbabwe rejects gay rights, says gay people will be imprisoned After meeting with the United Nations human rights chief, the justice minister of Zimbabwe vowed not to recognize any gay rights, and also rejected all allegations that the country harbors state-sponsored violence. Navi Pillai, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, was in Harare to assess the humanrights situation there while, in a joint statement, 36 groups said they would boycott a meeting with her arranged by the justice ministry at the Parliament, on account of it being “fraudulent.” Patrick Chinamasa, the country’s justice minister, claimed in a press conference that there was no state-sponsored violence, and that he had conveyed as much to Pillai. Buenos Aires allows same-sex marriages for tourists The Argentinean capital of Buenos Aires is opening up marriage equality to same-sex couples visiting the city. The South American nation has offered same-sex marriage since 2010, but now the option will be available to Buenos Aires tourists who place a request five days in advance. Couples must also provide a temporary address while in the city. City officials suggest that couples intending to marry hire a local lawyer to help them file the appropriate paperwork. The attorneys should also be able to point out if the Buenos Aires nuptials will have any recognition in the couples’ home nations.

Ukraine police shut down gay Pride march Amnesty International May 21 criticized the Kiev, Ukraine, police for canceling the city’s first gay Pride parade citing safety concerns. Police shut down the parade May 20 — 30 minutes before it was due to start — because, they said, about 500 ultraconservative protestors were en route to the parade’s rally point, Amnesty International stated in a release. “It has been clear from the start that the Kiev police department did not want this march

A group of about a dozen youths assaulted and used tear gas on two march participants after the evacuation of the parade route, the release said.

French PM to implement marriage, adoption rights for gays The new French prime minister has announced a commitment to implement new president François Hollande’s pledge to equalize the laws on marriage for gay and straight couples. The country will also allow gay couples to adopt children for the first time. A memo issued by the office of the prime minister, Jean-Marc Ayrault, who took office May 15, marked the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia with a pledge to put the president’s manifesto promise into law. It said: “On the occasion of International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, the prime minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment against violence and discrimination perpetrated as a result of sexual orientation or gender identity.” While gay and straight French couples can currently enter Civil Solidarity Pacts or PACS, only straight couples can marry. Media Trail Researcher apologizes for study of gay therapy The Associated Press reports a prominent retired psychiatrist is apologizing to the gay community for a decade-old study that concluded some gay people can go straight through what’s called reparative therapy. Dr. Robert L. Spitzer, who worked at Columbia University, now says he no longer believes his work showed that [outcome]. For the study, Spitzer had interviewed 200 people who’d claimed some degree of change. In a letter to a journal that published his work, Spitzer says the “fatal flaw” is that there is no way to judge the credibility of their accounts.

Court OKs student T-shirt ABC News reports a gay student who sued his Ohio high school for prohibiting him from wearing a T-shirt designed to urge tolerance of gays will be allowed to wear the shirt to school whenever he chooses. A judgment agreed to by Maverick Couch and the Waynesville Local School District was entered May 21 in federal court in Cincinnati. It allows the teen to wear the “Jesus Is Not A Homophobe” T-shirt and says the district must pay $20,000 in damages and court costs. The lawsuit alleged that the district northeast of Cincinnati had violated Couch’s freedom of expression rights. The district did not immediately return calls seeking comment. Couch said the shirt is a statement of pride and he hopes other students now know they can feel pride, too.

Transgender Miss Universe contestant loses Yahoo News reports the firstever transgender contestant to compete in the Miss Universe Canada pageant has lost her bid

to win the title. Jenna Talackova, 23, competed with 61 contestants May 19, and was among the final 12 contestants. The winner, Sahar Biniaz, 26, advances to the international Miss Universe competition in December. Talackova, who was born a male, underwent a sex change four years ago. The Vancouver, British Columbia, native was initially denied entry to Canada’s pageant because she was not a natural-born female. Donald Trump, who runs the Miss Universe Organization, subsequently overruled that decision. The 6-foot-1 blond beauty strutted the runway and competed in the bikini and formalwear contests. The winner advances to the international Miss Universe competition in December.

Target T-shirts to support gay pride The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports two years after controversy erupted over its support of a group backing Tom Emmer, the Republican gubernatorial candidate who opposed gay marriage, Target Corp. has launched an online charitable partnership supporting gay pride. The Minneapolis-based discounter says the two aren’t related — it has partnered with the Washington, D.C.-based Family Equality Council, which supports LGBT families, for more than a decade. “I certainly recognize what an incredible reaction [the Emmerrelated donation] generated,” said Jennifer Chrisler, the council’s executive director. “But here’s what I know about Target and their work with us: They’re 100percent committed to the goal of families being respected in all communities including parents who happen to be LGBT. This is just a continuation of that support.” Ten T-shirts are now featured on Target’s website with gayfriendly themes. Each Pride Tshirt sells for $12.99, all of which will be donated to the Family Equality Council. Donations are capped at $120,000. they will appeal and have until the end of the month to do so. In September 2010 Ravi used a webcam to spy on Clementi, who was having a sexual encounter with another man in their shared dorm room. Ravi invited others to watch and later attempted to spy again. A few days later, Clementi committed suicide. Judge Glenn Berman also ordered Ravi to serve three years of probation, complete 300 community-service hours, pay $10,000 in probation fees and participate in diversity and antibullying training. The sentencing fell vastly outside of the guidelines, as he was facing up to 10 years in prison. As Ravi is now a convicted felon, immigration officials could choose to deport him to his native India, but Berman said he would recommend that deportation not take place. Garden State Equality executive director Steven Goldstein expressed disappointment in the trial’s outcome. “We have been public in taking a position of balance: We opposed throwing the book at Dharun Ravi,” Goldstein said. “We have spoken out against giving him the maximum sentence of 10 years in jail and against deporting him. That would have been vengeance beyond punishment and beyond sending a message to the rest of society. But we have similarly rejected the other extreme that Ravi should have gotten no jail time at all, and today’s sentencing is closer to that extreme than the other. This was not merely a childhood prank gone awry. This was not a crime without bias.” Ravi was reserved when the sentence was delivered, although his mother broke down. Prior to the ruling, the judge tore into Ravi for his apparent lack of remorse. “I heard this jury say guilty 288 times — 24 questions and 12 jurors, that’s the multiplication. And I haven’t heard you apologize once,” Berman said. “The letter of ‘apology’ you gave to the pre-sentencing people, I’ll call it unimpressive.” Ravi’s attitude was also referenced by the Clementi family, who provided in-court victim impact statements before the sentencing. “I cannot imagine how a person who illegally webcammed his roommate in his most intimate moments and then texted

and tweeted people about it could then come back in the room and look that person in the eye,” said Clementi’s father, Joseph. “He doesn’t get it. He has no remorse and was genuinely surprised the jury found him guilty of any charges. When asked why he attempted to destroy evidence, he said he was trying to fix a problem. That is chilling.” Clementi’s brother James, who is also gay, said he no longer wants an apology from Ravi. “There was a time when an apology would have meant something to me but it’s now clear that anything of the sort would be empty, rehearsed words spoken without empathy,” he said. “His total lack of compassion and shifting of blame for his own actions seeps through every word he speaks about his crimes.” James Clementi went on to express the frustrations he has struggled with as the media shone a spotlight on his family and as the court case unfolded. “I watched as Dharun slept through court as though this wasn’t something worth staying awake for. I listened while he and his attorneys laughed together in court. Through it all, I listened and bit my tongue,” he said. “But the truth is that from the moment the computer randomly selected Tyler and Dharun to live together, my brother’s fate was sealed.” In her testimony, Clementi’s mother Jane described the guilt she dealt with for not recognizing sooner that Clementi would have problems with his roommate. She said Ravi appeared cold toward her son from the day she and her husband moved Clementi into the dorm. “We entered and said hello and the only response we got was from his mother and then later his father. He sat at his computer and ignored Tyler and us, didn’t acknowledge Tyler was in the room, didn’t stop what he was doing, no greeting, no smile, no recognition. He didn’t even look up,” she said. “He came with preconceived ideas about Tyler and never had an intention of befriending him or being a considerate roommate.” In his final remarks, Ravi’s defense attorney Steven Altman said his client was “demonized” by the LGBT community, who are blaming him for Clementi’s suicide, while lead prosecutor Julia McClure said Ravi committed “numerous criminal acts,” for which he showed no remorse. ■

Kate Clinton to kick off NJ Pride By Larry Nichols larry@epgn.com This year’s Jersey Pride will start off in grand fashion when the legendary Kate Clinton performs her new show “All Fracked Up” June 1 at The Stone Pony. Clinton, a former high-school English teacher, is in her 31st year of sharing her wry, insightful and hilarious views on politics, the environment and her experiences as an out and outspoken comedian. In addition to her constant touring, Clinton has recorded eight live CDs and two concert DVDs over the course of her career. She has also contributed columns and blogs to publications such as The Progressive, The Advocate and The Huffington Post. Given her credentials and intellectual pedigree, we worried we had to go back to school to hold our own in a conversation with Clinton. We didn’t, but at the end of the day, we do feel smarter for having spoken with her. PGN: Is your show at the Stone Pony a part of Jersey Pride or is it just how your schedule worked out this year? KC: It’s a happy coincidence of Pride and finally getting to Asbury Park. We thought it would be great to add with all the celebrations and everybody around. We’ll see how it goes but I’m excited. I’ve never been to Asbury Park. PGN: What is the secret to staying inspired and sharp after more than 30 years in comedy? KC: You’re very kind. I love what I do. I

love to make people laugh. It’s better than some other jobs like accountants. We need them but you don’t get really excited when you see them. I love what I do. I think it’s an exciting time to be a comedian, certainly to be a political comedian and an LGBT comedian. It’s been such a speedy ride for a liberation movement. In 45 years we’ve accomplished a lot. Really, one feeds the other. I’ve been happy to be a part of it and it certainly has inspired me. PGN: Did your background in education influence your style as a comedian? KC: Absolutely. I was in San Francisco doing a show and I ran into a student from 30 years ago. She said, “We knew you were funny.” I said, “Did you know I was gay?” They were like, “Yeah.” I said, “How did you know?” They said, “It was the Frye boots.” But I think I’m very planned for a show. I have a lesson plan and I can go from that. I really take a 45-minute or 90minute show very seriously and I’m very planned, and I think that’s from teaching. I don’t think I have to explain things as much as I used to in terms of gay. I would be like, I’d have to do a joke to a more mixed audience. You’d have to give a lot of background, which could kill the setup. There’s a way that people aren’t so homoignorant. You get to hear reactions from a crowd. I still have teacher ears and I love what I do. From teaching high-school English eight years — that was the hardest job I’ve ever had, bar none. When people say, “Wow! Sometimes you do two shows a day.” I’m like, I used to do five so this is fine. It taught me how to work hard, how

to work a room, how to be prepared, how to be spontaneous, how to hear things and how to go off in a different direction, but come back. I think I respected my students. I think we’re sort of in it together. Let’s see what we think. PGN: When you first set out to do comedy, did you want your material to be political or was that just how it evolved? KC: It’s really evolved that way. But to say back in 1981 that you were a lesbian comedian was political. It was quite political. I have been with my partner for 24 years and she is a really wonderful LGBT activist. For 24 years, at the end of every show, she’s always said, “Well, that was too long and you have to do more politics.” So I think my acceleration to do more political humor has had a home push. But you have to balance it too. I think people are inundated with political information whether they pay much attention to it or not. So in a show you really have to vary it with personal stories. I think of a show as more of a newspaper. There’s news of the day, there’s international news, there’s opinion and you can talk about arts. But you do have to vary it. Years ago, a friend who worked at a museum said you have to plan for museum fatigue. There’s a bench in a room for a particular reason. You have to give people breathers. Do knock-knock jokes for a few minutes and bring them back.

PGN: Does it surprise you that the far right is still trying to chip away at the rights of women? KC: You do wonder how far back Cher turned time. They’re zombie-like. You try to hit them with facts, they go down and then they come up. At certain points people would say, “Well that’ll do it for the right wing.” No, no, no, they keep coming at you. I think it’s a cautionary tale for the LGBT movement that when we get the vaunted federal marriage, and I think we will, that we can’t back off. I think that there were achievements in the women’s movement and we thought they were pretty much set in stone and they’re not. I worry that we get federal marriage and major donations will drop. People will think, We got it. Now we’re good to go. I’m going on a cruise. To younger people, marriage is not really their issue. Their issues are homelessness, HIV, violence and bullying. On the other end, we have elder gay people who are isolated and separated in nursing homes and a partner dies and the family comes in and takes everything. So when we get gay marriage, we still have a lot of work to do. And I do watch the continued assaults on women’s rights in this country and to me it all means they have nothing else. They have no plan. It’s like, “Let’s go after the girls again. That seemed to work.” PGN: In your new show you touch on the environment. Do you think we as Americans have a short attention span

when it comes to environmental issues? KC: I really do, and I think that the argument about whether or not there is global warming is passé. It’s here. We just had snow in October and that was it. It’s staggering. It’s here already. I come from upstate New York where the fracking thing is really up in everybody’s face. PGN: We also seemed to have forgotten about the Gulf of Mexico, like everything that happened down there is all good now. KC: And BP actually says that 86 percent of the oil evaporated. Really? Jump back! I always say, “Yeah, but it’s raining heating oil in Detroit.” We do need a shift in energy policy but I’m more interested in wind and solar power. But I don’t think there is a question of “is there” or “what if.” It’s here.

PGN: Now that the Republicans have decided on a candidate, do you think there will be a reduction in the level of crazy we’re seeing in the 2012 presidential campaign? KC: I think we’re going to see a lot more crazy. [U.S. Sen. Richard] Luger — a man I had a modicum of respect for — in Indiana got kicked out by the Tea Party. I’d like to see the Occupy people get more involved in electoral politics. I think the crazies are there, maybe not as condensed and easy to find as they were during the debates, but they are definitely out there. I think [Mitt] Romney is madly going to be scuttling toward the middle. PGN: Why do you think news and talking-head shows about politics are so interested in what comedians to have say?

KC: I’ve always felt that the medium of comedy allows you to say things other people can’t say in a serious way: Whether you are making fun of it or mocking it, you’re still getting the information out there. I think there’s a way that we have the freedom to say things that more serious news people can’t do. I think that there’s a way that comedy has a tendency to condense and get to the point. We have a lot of commentators 24/7 but there’s a way that comedy can really condense the point and it’s important to do that. There’s an element of surprise. A good one-liner is like a good line of poetry. It can go many ways. Sometime when I say things in a show people laugh at the same time but for different reasons. In some ways, I think comedy is much more democratic than people telling you what to think. It’s conclusive in one way but I never know what people are concluding. There’s a kind of condensed democracy about comedy. If I can give a line that people will repeat to people who might not agree with them, I feel like I’ve done my job. It’s not what I aim for, but mocking is good. ■

Jeanne Chiaradio: From 10th and Snyder to Atlantic City If you hadn’t noticed, Atlantic City is experiencing a resurgence. It’s good to know, as the sweltering summer days approach, that we can go “down the shore” and not have to leave our LGBT pride behind. This week’s portrait, Jeanne Chiaradio, has been in the “people business” for over 30 years. Chiaradio has held positions from dealer to director in gaming, marketing and human resources for Harrah’s in Atlantic City. She currently is on the Greater Atlantic City GLBT Alliance Education Committee and is vice chair of the Board of Directors of the South Jersey AIDS Alliance. PGN: So you’re originally from Philly. JC: Yes, I’m a South Philly girl. St. Maria Goretti High School. PGN: I keep on hearing about Goretti girls and it seems that it’s always said with a wink. What’s so special about Goretti girls? JC: I think we’re a close-knit bunch. I’m still in touch with my Goretti girls. There are about 10 of us that we call The 50s Club — because we all went away together when we turned 50 — and there is a bond and camaraderie there that’s hard to describe. I say it’s like therapy when I’m with them. We get together about once a month and laugh, and reminisce and share stories. PGN: And what made you so close? Fighting off the nuns? JC: [Laughs.] Well, I was always in trouble! I used to get pulled up by the collar for not sitting up straight in my chair, but I was short — I could only go up so far! My feet would be dangling in the air! People that I work with now find that hard to believe, but my mom had to make quite a few visits to the school. But we all turned out pretty well. PGN: Siblings? JC: No, I’m an only child, but my mom had three sisters so I had lots of cousins. We all lived about one block apart in South Philly and were more like siblings than cousins. Even now that our parents are gone, we still carry on all the family traditions and holidays, etc. I never felt like an only child. PGN: What were your parents like? JC: My dad was a Philadelphia policeman and my mom was a hairdresser. PGN: Was she a stylish person? JC: Oh yeah. [Laughs.] My mom always looked like she was going somewhere, even if she wasn’t. She was always dressed with a big smile on her face. She was a social butterfly.

PGN: Looking at your résumé, you seem to be a people person too. JC: Yeah, both my parents were very outgoing. They did a lot for other people and were well respected in the community. When God was giving out parents, I got in the right line. Growing up gay back then could have been difficult but they were so supportive and loving ... I can’t say enough about my family. I’m very fortunate. PGN: How old were you when you came out? JC: When I was in my early 20s my mother asked me. I’d always said that if she asked it would mean she was ready to know. With a father who was a detective and a mother who was sharper than the FBI, I knew it wouldn’t take them long to figure it out. I just waited until the time was right to tell them. They were immediately supportive of not just me, but my friends and any significant others. People were invited to family gatherings and holidays and made to feel welcome. And I know it must have been hard for my mother with me being an only child. I always felt bad about the grandchildren thing, but I had a pet at the time and my mom would say, “It’s all right, I have a wonderful granddog!”

JC: Oh boy, there are a lot. We get some extreme situations. I’ve seen people turn $100 into $100,000. We have a lot of people that get on a roll and won’t leave — even to go to the bathroom. We had one guy who played in the baccarat pit and whenever he played we had to get the chair reupholstered! PGN: Something I’ve always wondered about: How do you know if people are counting cards? JC: There are basic strategies playing cards and, when you see someone deviate sharply, it gives you a heads up. If there’s a wide range in someone’s betting patterns it’s a red flag, like if they’re betting $25 here and there and then they suddenly bet $400 and two 10s come up. Things like that are a giveaway. PGN: Is it illegal to count cards? How can you keep people from counting? JC: No, not in New Jersey. Casinos in the state of New Jersey are forbidden from

PGN: Having a police-officer dad, was there a scary moment that stands out? JC: When the whole MOVE incident went down [in 1978] my father was there. I remember watching TV and seeing my father running across the street while gunshots were being fired. Later they said that a policeman had been shot but they weren’t releasing the names, so it was scary waiting to find out what happened.

the Harrah’s Entertainment Chairman’s Award for Excellence in Managing People and Outstanding Team Performance. It was probably the highlight of my casino career. It’s not just an internal award for our Harrah’s property — at the time they probably had about 50 facilities and about 50,000 employees. Winning one Chairman’s award was a big honor and I got two, which was unheard of. So it was very special. PGN: Best celebrity encounter? JC: Gladys Knight and Neil Diamond playing cards in my section when I was pit boss. Not at the same time! But they were both really nice. PGN: So back to coming out: First crush? JC: It was probably a teacher, but since we’re all still in touch, I don’t want to say any names! PGN: Have you worn your Catholic schoolgirl uniform since graduating? JC: [Laughs.] Funny you should ask. At our 30-year reunion I went to the bathroom, put on the uniform and came out swinging my locker key. I just found a certificate I got for being able to still fit into it. At 50, I took it to Florida with me and pulled it out. It’s all beat up now and has writing all over it from people signing it, but I’ve worn it a few times! PGN: Do you have a partner? JC: I do. Her mom had a restaurant near my office and that’s how we met.

PGN: What were you like as a kid? JC: I was pretty sporty. I played baseball and football with the boys. I didn’t play basketball ‘cause I was too short, but I was always comfortable playing with the guys. I was one of the few girls allowed to play on the boys’ teams. PGN: After high school? JC: I started to go to Philadelphia community College for criminal justice, but I got a side job as a blackjack dealer and it ended up being a career path. The casinos were just opening in A.C., and I thought it would be pretty fun to make money playing cards. There was so much opportunity at the time, I went from dealer to director in Gaming, Marketing and Human Resources for Harrah’s. One thing led to another and before you knew it, 15 years had gone by. I never finished school but I was pretty much running the casino.

We actually had a good relationship with a card-counting team that used to come to the casino. When they’d go away, they let us know so we could relax. They’d even send us postcards!

PGN: You’ve been in the industry for so long: What’s your craziest client story?

PGN: What’s a favorite casino moment? JC: That would have to be when I received

PGN: Tell me a little about some of the resurgence in A.C. JC: We have a lot going right now. Some of it started with Dennis Gomes, a true visionary, who gave the 13th floor of Resorts to Joel Ballesterous, the director of LGBT marketing. He used it to create Pro Bar, the first LGBT bar inside one of the casinos. It’s doing great and has really reenergized the community. They also recently opened The Piano Bar, which I absolutely love! I have held three or four ladies’ parties at Pro Bar and I’m thinking about getting my old South Philly 10th Street Girls together for a night of singing around the piano ... and yes, we can and will sing Donna Summer songs. GLBT Alliance Education Committee. We’ve done all sorts of events and, on June 19, we’re having a Stop the Hate Jazz & Sunset Cruise with live music, food, DJ and a bar. Our South Jersey AIDS Alliance is also strong. We just had an AIDS walk and we’ve held “Meet me at the Chez Paree” reunions, which are always a great time. We’re doing some good things. PGN: Who are the 10th Street Girls? JC: Tenth and Snyder in Philadelphia used to be the corner where all the lesbians hung out. Cars would drive by and holler nasty things at us, but it didn’t matter. It probably started out with a couple of girls hanging out and before you knew it, there were 20, 30 girls hanging out there. We had a reunion and about 70 girls showed up. PGN: How did you know who was gay at the school? JC: Our gaydar! At an all-girls’ school you just knew. This was back in 1973 and ’74 and there were a whole lot of girls, a whole lot. I remember a nun calling me into her office and telling me I shouldn’t be hanging out on 10th Street. But it was fun, I’m glad I lived through it. PGN: Called out by a nun! And what do you do now? JC: Well, in 1992 I got my real-estate

license and went from cards and dice to contracts and deeds and then, in 2004, I lost my mother to Alzheimer’s disease. My grandmother and aunt also died from it. I had her with me for a while and had taken some time off to figure out what to do about it. It’s really hard even figuring out where to start: Should I keep her with me, take her somewhere else to live, get a full-time companion? I’d begun taking her to a sort of daycare facility and she loved it. She got to interact with people and do different things. I called her The Mayor because by the end of the day, she knew everybody’s name and they all loved her. I found her a full-time place near my home where I could visit every day. I never thought of doing anything but the casino business, but after she passed it was like a little bird kept telling me I needed to switch directions. I became a committee member for the Alzheimer’s Association, Walk to End Alzheimer’s and an Alzheimer’s support-group facilitator. In 2009, I opened Synergy HomeCare in Hammonton, N.J. About 55 percent of the folks that we help have mental disorders, dementia or Alzheimer’s. I was lucky in that, though our roles reversed, my mother never lost her wit. I sometimes think maybe that’s why I never had children, it gave me time to take care of her. I wouldn’t trade a thing. PGN: What are some of the highlights and low points of running the facility?

JC: Highlights: It’s so very rewarding, helping a family to figure out the right thing to do. When they send a card saying, “Thank you so much, you were right, it was the best decision and Mom is really happy.” There’s a lot of resistance to having someone you don’t know coming into your home and I understand that, coming from a big Italian family, where you are supposed to take care of your own. But when we can give both the families and the patients peace of mind, it’s a great thing. Challenges: It’s a 24hour business. Fortunately, we have some really great people working with us. It’s a shame, but the current unemployment situation means we can be selective in hiring. Facing end-of-life situations is challenging too, but you know, there’s also something peaceful about it. It’s hard to describe but there’s something special about helping someone out at that stage. PGN: I always thought that I’d be a good funeral director, because I don’t get freaked out about death or speaking about it. Not that I’m in any hurry to experience it, but it doesn’t particularly scare me. JC: [Laughs.] My mom used to say, “Death is a part of living,” so I never had any fear about dying either. I just don’t. PGN: Is Alzheimer’s disease hereditary? If so, is that something you fear? JC: Yeah, my cousins and I joke about it. We’ve said we’re going to start wearing

nametags at the next family gathering. But we’re realistic about it. My grandmother and my aunt all had it so when my mother started showing signs, we went to a class which taught us everything from the medical to the legal aspects of handling the disease. Communication can be huge, learning not to correct her, etc. I was just in Washington with the Alzheimer’s Association, so it’s something that we’re conscious of but don’t dwell on it. PGN: Changing gears, any hobbies? JC: I wish I had time. I do like picking up seashells and I’ve recently gotten into finding beach glass. PGN: Any good scars? JC: Yup, I have one on my knee that looks like a smiley face. I got it climbing up aluminum bleachers, like I shouldn’t have, to change the scoreboard at my cousin’s Little League game. PGN: Words of advice? JC: Live every day as if it were your last, because someday you may be right! PGN: Your dream for the future? JC: I would love to have an all-gay casino! Chapter Five looks at foster care and adoption rights for LGBT people, including the right to adopt jointly and to do a second-parent adoption of a partner’s legal child. Finally, Ball devotes an entire chapter to cases involving transsexual parents. As with those of gay and lesbian parents, these cases have centered either on the ability of the transsexual person to be a good parent, or on whether they should be considered parents of children with whom they do not have a biological connection. Ball notes, though, that transsexual parents are even more at risk than gay parents of losing their parental rights altogether — as in the case of Martha Boyd, a transsexual woman who, like Marianne MacQueen, lost her parental rights, which were granted to her ex-spouse’s new spouse. Unlike MacQueen, however, she never even regained visitation. At the same time, Ball informs us that “one of the strongest judicial condemnations of denying parental rights” based on LGBT identity came early — in 1973 — in the case of Mark Randall, a transsexual man. Ball urges that in the future, all courts must look at the actual relationships children have with their caretakers. Biology, marital status, sexual orientation and gender identity are not what determine whether someone is a good parent, he says. What matters is “how they carry out their

responsibilities of parenthood.” While we are still far from that goal, we have made tremendous progress over the last 40 years, as Ball has masterfully shown. Most jurisdictions now put the burden of proof on the heterosexual parent to show that a gay ex-spouse will cause harm to a child. More allow LGBT parents to foster or adopt children. Collectively, the legal successes of LGBT parents “helped to make possible the raising of tens of thousands of children in loving homes,” Ball says, adding, “It is ultimately the success stories of the actual parenting — more than the litigation victories — that will lead the country to provide LGBT families with the legal recognition and social respect they deserve.” When President Obama at long last stated his support for marriage equality on May 9, he said he was motivated by samesex parents and their children. Ball’s book, in a timely coincidence, provides further evidence of the power behind the “quieter revolution” of LGBT parenting. “The Right to Be Parents” is essential reading not only for family lawyers and policymakers, but also for any LGBT parents looking to know more about the history of which they are part. ■ Dana Rudolph is the founder and publisher of Mombian (www.mombian.com), a blog and resource directory for LGBT parents.

When it comes to hanging in Atlantic City, we have always loved us some Borgata. In fact, for the longest time it was the only place in the city we cared to spend time. But now there’s a new contender — Revel — and the two multi-gajilliondollar casino/entertainment complexes are sure to be locking glittery neon horns for our Atlantic City-bound hearts, minds and dollars for the foreseeable future. Revel, which is hosting its grand opening this holiday weekend, is the tallest building in Atlantic City and the biggest construction project to hit the city since the Borgata. We must say, Revel Atlantic City, 500 Boardwalk, immediately scores some major cool points. It has a stylized and hip décor blending futuristic and retro influences that will probably have anyone but the most hardcore of gambling addicts looking up and around on the first visit. Revel also has some of the best stretches of beachfront the city has to offer. Actually, we were just impressed that anyone could make any piece of beach in New Jersey attractive as opposed to the wasteland of funnel cakes, Skee Ball, aggressively dive-bombing seagulls, medical waste and Snooki clones we’ve always imagined it to be. But Revel’s piece of real estate is sure to be a major draw once they get all of their pools and outdoor accommodations set up.

perfect match: There is something about strong mixed drinks and upscale bar food, steaks and seafood that goes well with gambling. But we think it was a stroke of pure genius to build a replica of Garces’ Guapos Tacos truck adjacent to the casino floor. Getting street tacos and racing back to the slots in under five minutes? Priceless. But Revel is going to have to really knock it out of the park to completely win us away from the Borgata Hotel Spa and Casino, 1 Borgata Way, which recently underwent a $50-million redesign of its hotel rooms. Keep in mind, they were pretty swanky to begin with. And then

there are the hotel rooms in the Borgata’s Water Club, so luxurious they bring tears to our eyes. The Borgata also has some of our favorite places to eat in Atlantic City. In our humble opinion, we just get a more impressive experience for our buck. Izakaya is the place to go for traditional and nontraditional Asian-inspired flavors and sushi. Wolfgang Puck’s American Grill is fantastic as well. Do not leave with trying the smoked salmon pizza. 333 Belrose plus one = a perfect 10 By Larry Nichols larry@epgn.com We had one of the most flawless meals we’ve ever experienced on a recent trip out to the Philadelphia suburbs. With spring upon us and summer on the way, 333 Belrose’s bucolic surroundings and tastefully artsy interior — still fancy enough for people who enjoy a nice pricey bottle of wine — is the perfect backdrop for the fun California-inspired menu, which changes every few weeks on the whim of chef Carlo deMarco and whatever fresh ingredients happen to inspire him. It doesn’t hurt that Tuesday and Thursday are half-price wine nights at this Radnor restaurant. Speaking of cocktails, there is some serious mojo working behind the bar at Belrose. We recommend the Dark and Stormy ($9), a simple but effective concoction of ginger beer and dark rum. Every dish we sampled went well above and beyond expectations from beginning to end. Appetizers such as the pork carnitas tacos ($12) alone made us glad we made the

trip, with its layers of bright ingredients and textures from the guacamole to the pickled red onions. The crispy salt and pepper calamari ($13) had the added bonus of pumpkin-seed aoli and fried jalapeño chips to make it stand out. The togaishi seared ahi tuna ($12) was a lovely splash of Asian flavors. Soups and salads were a delight too. It’s easy to see why Carlo’s black bean soup ($7.50) is a perennial favorite as it was note perfect, pleasantly spicy with pico de gallo and lime cream rounding it out. The grilled octopus and arugula salad ($14) contained some of the best octopus we’ve had anywhere, and the rest of the salad perfectly supported it. The entrées were nothing short of spectacular. The jumbo lump crab cakes ($32) were superb.
