Having competed in a variety of sports (competitive natural body building being one) I’m a sucker for a new sporting interest, so it came as no surprise to me that I fell into duathlons after joining Manchester Triathlon Club as a bit of extra ﬁtness training for joining the Parachute Regiment. I went on a training camp to Lanzarote with Manchester Tri Club at the end of January and then got bitten by the bug. I really enjoyed running and cycling already, doing regular track sessions with Altrincham Running Club and riding with friends. However, swimming was something I didn’t particularly enjoy and wasn’t particularly good at. I heard that there were races that just incorporated running 10k, biking generally around 40k and running a further 5k after that. This appealed a lot more to me so I started my speciﬁc focus on this whilst in Lanzarote, taking full advantage of the tough cycling conditions there. On my return I immediately targeted certain duathlon events, races where you could qualify to race for Great Britain at your age group in the World and European Championships along with a North West Championship. From the results below you will see I took part in only 5 races so it was a steep learning curve, but 12th overall in the Northwest Championships in my second race was great and qualifying to race in both the European and World Age Group Championships for Great Britain was a fantastic achievement for me. I learnt a lot in the few races I did and improved a lot in the very short time frame that they took place, considering they were big events. Type of training, dedication, diet and preparation were all key to my improvements and relative success in the time span. In terms of future success there are a few speciﬁc areas to work on. I need to decrease my bodyweight to make me more efﬁcient on both the bike and for running and I need more time on the bike to improve my handling skills and get more speciﬁc conditioning in my legs.

ome of us train hard as second nature and some of us need a seriously good kick before something actually happens. Whatever the case, regardless of your background we all need motivation and for me, that comes in the shape of a comprehensive workout nutrition plan. With regards to my workouts I think it’s important to have the correct frame of mind before I am sent out to complete my mission. The mission is to leave the gym with a severe pump and dripping with sweat by any means necessary.
For me to achieve that full range of focus and ability, my supplement stack is as follows:
PhD V Max Pump. Within 10-15 minutes of a 200ml serving I start to feel that familiar tingling sensation which indicates the blood is beginning to run through my hungry muscle cells- time to begin. With each rep I feel growth and vascularity like wires attached to the surface of my expanding body. I personally always manipulate the serving to give me greater pumps (not recommended for ﬁrst time users) and also leave the gym feeling wiped out. If I start off with PhD V Max pump then I know it’s gonna get really messy and the pump is going to be intense. I’ll also swallow 5 to 10 BCAA capsules with my serving of V Max Pump.
Many people come to me for advice and a lot of the time it is because of the disappointment in their slow gains from training. Hitting the weights with no food or some kind of supplementation is like driving a 4 litre vehicle with an empty tank on the motorway ‘you’re not gonna get very far’ if anywhere at all.
Immediately after training: 2 scoops of PhD Recovery 2:1. The name speaks for itself, RECOVERY! What more do you need than the right level of carbs, protein, L-Glutamine, BCAA’s and Creatine to replenish and sustain muscle growth from all the hard work and time you have put in. Recovery 2:1 is the best value money can buy and probably one of my top ﬁve favourite products in the PhD range. Because Recovery 2:1 is so comprehensive, I stop there, I don’t need anything else. I make sure that my second post workout meal comes in solid form about 90 minutes after my Recovery 2:1 serving. Typically this meal will be chicken and rice or Fish and rice.
The same goes for post workout. Many people don’t understand the major importance of it and train for hours in the gym, then eat a chocolate bar because they either feel they deserve it or they are in a depleted level of energy and need replenishment fast. Ignoring the signs of depletion or starving muscles is like working an entire month for your wages, and then when you are ﬁnally paid, you take it to a betting shop and lose it all. You’re basically making a gamble as to how much muscle gain you will achieve and in all honesty you’d be heading in the opposite direction unless you take action. So here’s how I do it after training:

When 2011 began, I had one burning ambition: To compete on stage and showcase the hard work I put into my life on a daily basis. I ﬁrst came across the federation Muscle Mania late the same year and it ﬁt the bill of what I was looking for as a route to physique competition. As a life time natural athlete, I did wonder whether or not I would be good enough, big enough or ripped enough to enter the competition, but my success with PhD so far (as a brand ambassador) has given me the conﬁdence to reach for all my goals. I got some advice from fellow team PhD athlete Roger Snipes (Roger has since been crowned Overall Musclemania 2011 Champion) about how he has improved his physique over the years and I was feeling more motivated than ever. New training program was set and new training partner in place.
In hindsight with more time, I would have called on the body building expertise within PhD and had a crash course of posing, but my decision was made.
So, feeling good, new environment, new training partner and new program, time to make some magic happen. Being on a cruise for the ﬁrst week of a holiday during my competition prep was challenging but it did allow me to eat good food 18 hours a day.
Trophy time came and I just wanted to know that I had done well. So going through the process It was announced I had won second place, but as the top three qualiﬁed, I made it through to the European ﬁnal in St. Albans 4th September. Feeling a bit drained after the competition, it was hard to get back into training again and also back on to the strict diet. I kept my head high and was invited to come to PhD headquarters for a photo shoot. Meeting up with the team was great and really did inspire me to lift my game again. Hopefully to do equally as well in the European ﬁnal if not better.

Holiday over and I returned to Britain and handed my entry form in. I decided to go for the model category, as the bodybuilding needed a routine and also had mandatory poses to be done. This is something I had no previous experience in and just not enough preparation time.
TONY’S TRAINING ROUTINE
As time moved on during the holiday, morning cardio was getting tougher and I struggled to get more than 30 minutes running or swimming in and with the intense heat it was zapping every ounce of energy I had. But I kept at it. The second half of my holiday was going to prove more difﬁcult as our family holiday location had no gym within the immediate area. Luckily my parents are tennis fanatics and they hunted high and low for tennis and sports complexes to play at and asked about any nearby gyms. To my surprise there were two, one was ridiculously expensive and had next to no serious weight training equipment in and the other was literally someone’s garage. The guy was a gym enthusiast himself and had converted a whole top ﬂoor to a body builders dream. Loads of free weights, machines, plenty of space and the price was next to nothing, Deal done.
As competition date loomed, I had that exact same feeling in me that I had when I competed in the PhD cover model competition 09/10. Like I had done everything that I could have done and given 110%. It was now time to travel to the venue and prepare for the show. We got the line up of events and prepared backstage by pumping up with some light dumbbells (along with drinking some V-Max Pump). I went out there and just enjoyed the experience. I wasn’t sure how I faired against the other competitors but I was in good condition myself and that was all that mattered to me.

The 23 year old lightweight ﬁghts out of Liverpool and is part of ‘Team Kaobon’. He trains alongside respected UFC veterans such as Paul Kelly, Terry Etim & Paul Taylor. In his UFC debut at UFC 120, he submitted Canadian Mark Holst in the very ﬁrst round via Triangle choke –picking up “submission of the night” honours in the process.
