Since the 1970s ursodeoxycholic acid has been used in Western human medicine for dissolution of gallstones. More recently, it has been used in the management of chronic hepatic diseases in humans such as primary biliary cirrhosis, biliary disease secondary to cystic fibrosis, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, idiopathic chronic hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis and alcoholic hepatitis. However, its therapeutic efficacy in some of these disorders has not been firmly established.

Ursodeoxycholic acid was approved for use in the United States in December 1987, and was designated an orphan drug. It is the only FDA approved drug to treat primary biliary cirrhosis.

Ursodeoxycholic acid goes by the trade names Actigall, Ursosan, Ursofalk, Urso, and Urso Forte. In Italy and Switzerland, it is marketed under the name Deursil. Ursodeoxycholic acid currently on the market mainly appears in the form of tablets, capsules, liquids and powders, and is also sold in the United States, China, Japan and some European countries.
