THE DESIGNER A

nna Skodbo is the creative driving force behind cross-genre clothing brand Phannatiq, part time harpist, and occasional surfer. Steiner School educated in Edinburgh, she developed a curiosity and respect for social and stylistic individualism that is prominent in all her activities. From an early life sharing her home with adults with severe learning disabilities, schooling that encouraged self expression and creativity, to years spent childminding and getting by in Oslo, having set off for a new life in Norway at the age of 18, Anna has been shaped by slightly unconventional experiences and carries with her great flexibility and determination as a result. Returning to the UK in 2007 to study Fashion BA (hons) at the University of Hertfordshire, she sought out practical roles facilitating London Fashion Week while honing her business and creative skills that would soon lead to establishing her own brand. Anna holds a deep respect for natural and human resources, and places this commitment at the centre of her brand Phannatiq by maintaining supply chains of high sustainability and ethical credibility, and known to accept interns only within a framework of strictly defined learning goals. As a keen educator, Anna lectures and supports students of both business and fashion, sharing her specialist insight and successes in maintaining integrity within a solely profit-focussed industry dominated by disposable fashion.

ross-genre clothing brand phannatiq has been throwing a sideways look at sartorial provisions for the world’s pavement populations since 2010 and their irreverent adherence to social stereotypes have amassed them a following unbounded by traditional attitudes. Brand Director and Textile Designer Anna Skodbo, herself a passionate fan and observer of style and self expression, celebrates that phannatiq has grown to reflect her own ‘clothes for people’ attitude to dressing, successfully rethinking gender and sizing indications across the range and encouraging experiments with body-fit. Renowned for their signature urban disruption patterns, applied through traditional screen-printing techniques, phannatiq has long drawn on London’s domestic and industrial landscapes in the creation of their textiles; introducing a visual texture that sits comfortably within any occasion while offering some surprising discoveries amongst the striking collages. As ethical as they are enjoyable, phannatiq’s garments reflect a core commitment to responsible employment and sustainable manufacture while eschewing seasonal collections for a reliable offering of timeless pieces that transcend the call for wardrobe refresh.

I'M A PHANNATIQ ALISON LOWE

4

From country and western backing singer to fashion publicist, Alison’s always been led by her passions...

Why are you a phannatiq? Because I love strong design, wearable clothes that are bold and playful. Describe your style. In any day I can be darting from high-power meetings to shop visits to studio visits, so my style is balanced around this. It’s eclectic, oversized, comfortable… but hopefully stylish!

Tell us about your favourite object. I have so many favourite objects, from my lucky pewter Viking ornament to my new iPad, from my waving Buddha to my new Phannatiq skirt! I only have things in my life that I feel passionate about.

The city, because… It is vibrant, multi cultural and home!

What do you want to be remembered for? Gosh that’s a hard one – I hope that people will remember me for being honest, generous and giving back.

How did you become you? I never had a set path, I have always been driven to do things that excite me and that I feel passionate about. Everything from being an actress to touring as a backing singer with the country music greats, from running an international courier business to teaching creative entrepreneurship.

What’s been your most outrageous/ extravagant purchase? And best bargain? The most expensive thing I have had is two daughters! They have been outrageously expensive over the past 20 years!!! But also my best bargain as they bring the most incredible value to my life every day.

"I ONLY HAVE THINGS IN MY LIFE THAT I FEEL PASSIONATE ABOUT"

Where are you now? What are you doing next? I really love running Felicities and supporting emerging fashion brands. The next step is to launch my new website Start Your Own Fashion Label, with a broad range of resources including handouts and podcasts for designers.

What’s your biggest passion? And your worst vice? My biggest passion is helping businesses develop and succeed. My worst vice is that I’m easily bored.

See Alison’s work at www.felicities.co.uk/

in the SPOTLIGHT... Who? Stella Creasy MP, wearing our Cape Dress Where? The Elle Style Awards “I wore phannatiq because it’s from Walthamstow but also because I knew it looked good. I don’t have a great fashion sense but I have a huge appreciation for good fashion and for the skill that goes into it. It was lovely wearing phannatiq and knowing it would be beautifully cut. That makes a difference to how you look and feel. In an environment where everybody else was at least three sizes smaller than me, I felt I could at least stand my ground.”

cAt STRIPES

C

at Stripes is our answer to nautical. We think nautical is a bit silly, so we thought we’d take the silly a little bit further. Anna Skodbo’s cat Frazzle was photographed over the course of a year on the garden wall from which she likes to survey her empire. These were combined to create the stripes.

a phannatiq evening

Thanks to everyone that came!

P

hannatiq held a Press Launch and Private Sale at the cosy WeWork Spitalfields. The modern, collaborative space with its city views was a fitting place to showcase our new collection, alongside Imogen Belfield’s unique jewellry designs and everyone’s favourite Sportluxe brand Charli Cohen. A free bar was provided courtesy of Walthamstow’s legendary Wild Card Brewery whose delicious beer contributed to the friendly atmosphere, along with the relentless hypnotic beats from Joseph Hammond, another

gifted E17 resident. It meant a lot to us to be supported by so much local talent. WeWork soon filled up nicely with colourful characters and familiar faces, all of whom had come to see what phannatiq designer Anna Skodbo had pulled out of the bag this time! As the night went on, there were many happy shoppers full of free beer and the Darkwave meanderings of Ray Noir’s DJ set. The venue made a perfect backdrop for the event, and everyone who attended made the evening a real success.

Let Loose, GO WILD

WILD CARD BREWERY

A

trio who met in the Midlands have created an oasis of cask beer in the sunny corner of east London Phannatiq hails from - Walthamstow, an east London ‘hood with a long history of welcoming creatives. It’s been home to everyone from William Morris to Grayson Perry, from East 17 to Lethal Bizzle. Walthamstow’s urban landscape is changing fast. Among the pioneers transforming it are William Harris, Andrew Birkby and Jaega Wise – the three amigos behind Wild Card brewery. It sits in a scrappy industrial estate alongside railway lines, a garage, metalworkers and a spray-painting workshop. It also has fellow innovator neighbours: neon emporium God’s Own Junkyard, party venue The Blitz Factory and Mother’s Ruin gin palace.

28

By day it’s soundtracked by barrels being shifted, the whine of tools and the garage radio. By night these are replaced with the sound of laughter and the occasional low-key gig. We caught up with the trio by day to find out how it all started. William and Andrew met stacking shelves in a Boots store in Nottingham, bonded over a love of beer and got into homebrew as a way of driving down costs to a student-loan-friendly 16p a pint. Jaega brought an expert eye thanks to her degree in chemical engineering. “When we were home brewing, it was so small-scale it was more like cooking,” says William. “She treated it with condescending amusement. Even now, our brewery is by far the tiniest piece of plant she’s ever operated.” They moved down south and started

Wild Card in 2012, a time when the Olympics brought an “anything is possible” vibe to the entire country but east London in particular. The name Wild Card comes from their years of experimental brewing. Even now, the beers are labelled with a playing card. Our favourite is Jack of Clubs, a 4.5 percent ABV ruby ale. “We’d have thousands of bottles of beer all over the house,” says William. “Good record-keeping is crucial, to improve on the recipes. So we labelled them with playing cards. Plus we liked the idea of being non-qualified entrants. Between us we had about 8 months of industry experience... and that was just washing stuff. It was the London Olympics and we were the Wild Card.” They borrowed £4,000 on their credit cards and made a single batch of beer on equipment hired for the day. Sold it, made a bit of money, then did it again. Only later did they get the funding to set up their own brewery and bar.

summer the yard outside is filled with merriment as customers spill out onto long picnic benches. “We’re not hipsters,” says Andrew. “We just want to make good beer.” Wild Card Brewery, Unit 7, Ravenswood Industrial Estate, Shernhall Street E17 9HQ www.wildcardbrewery.co.uk

"WE’re not hipsters... we just want to make good beer" And what a bar! Great beer, happy staff, thanks in no small part to Wild Card’s commitment to paying everyone a London Living Wage, and a stunning space. It’s industrial, utilitarian without pretention, but creative. A local artist has made a totem of decorated beer barrels. The space is big but intimate. In the winter it’s warmed by a woodburner.
