Trains paraprofessional personnel serving individuals ages 3 to 21 with disabilities. Emphasizes best practices, cur rent knowledge and research, skill building, applications in general, and special education classrooms. Intended for students seeking entry-level qualifications as a paraeducator or teacher assistant in centers with children with special needs and a credential as par t of their professional growth and development. Designed to articulate into Lehigh Carbon Community College’s Special Education Associate Degree Programs and to enhance any of LCCC’s Teacher Education Programs.

Upon successful completion of this program, graduates will be able to:

• know patterns of human development and learning across the life-span and understand that each child’s learning and development are unique based on knowledge of family, culture, and biological influences. • develop a knowledge of exceptionalities, educational processes, resources, and a skill base re garding the assessment, planning and implementing of educational strategies. • use collaborative relationships with families, colleagues, and the community to support and advocate for children’s learning and well-being. • articulate an understanding of special education law, their role as an educator and as a self-deter mining individual; their beliefs about teaching and lear ning of children with exceptionalities in education settings, particularly in the context of paraeducation; as well as an understanding of career opportunities for educators.
