The Natural and Historical Resources Division Program Planning Handbook The Maryland-National Park and Planning Commission’s (M-NCPPC) Natural and Historical Resources Division (NHRD) Program Planning Handbook describes the program offerings and facility amenities offered by the division’s numerous facilities.

The handbook outlines both guided and self-guided opportunities offered throughout the year. The mission of NHRD is to provide the public with professional natural and historical resource management services, interpretive programs, museums, parks, and special facilities in order to educate our community and encourage stewardship of the diverse natural resources and historical heritage of Prince George’s County. From nature hikes on the trails of our parks to canoe trips on the river, a walk back in time in our museums or archaeology sites, to a day on the farm, this handbook clearly demonstrates we have something for everyone. Take a look at what each facility offers and contact them if you would like to inquire about scheduling, partnering, or with any general questions.

Our three nature centers, Clearwater Nature Center in Cosca Regional Park in southern Prince George’s County, Watkins Nature Center in the central part of the county, and Mount Rainier Nature and Recreation Center, an urban nature center in northern Prince George’s County, offer countless indoor and outdoor programs to people of all ages. The division manages over 7,000 acres of marsh and woodlands as part of Patuxent River Park including Fran Uhler Natural Area, Governor Bridge Natural Area, Clyde Watson Boating Area, Queen Anne Fishing Area and Canoe Launch, Jug Bay Natural Area, and Cedar Haven Park. Naturalists conduct environmental and nature interpretation programs and activities throughout these parks and nature centers. The Patuxent River 4-H Center operates year round on 74 acres of open-space parkland adjacent to the Patuxent River offering an abundance of activities and camps where visitors explore and enjoy the great outdoors. Park Rangers offer guided tours of natural area parks rich in plant and animal diversity, like the Suitland Bog, Cheltenham Wetlands Park, and Lake Artemisia, in addition to a host of outreach programs, camps, and other outdoor activities.

Historic sites throughout the county provide educational benefits through tours, historical programs, and special events. Six historic house museums including Surratt, Darnall’s Chance, Marietta, Billingsley, Riversdale, and Montpelier, welcome visitors of all ages and offer numerous opportunities to learn and experience Prince George’s County’s history. College Park Aviation Museum boasts 27,000-square-feet of interactive exhibits that tell the story of the world’s oldest operating airport, the College Park Airport, where Wilbur Wright first taught military aviators to fly in 1909. The Archaeology Program preserves, protects, and interprets the archaeological resources of the county and manages several archaeological parks where visitors and students have opportunities to take part.

Clearwater N a t u re C e n t e r Cosca Regional Park 11000 Thrift Road Clinton, MD 20735 Phone: 301-297-4575 TTY: 301-699-2544 Fax: 301-297-5743 Clearwater Nature Center offers a variety of interpretive programs hosted by the facility's naturalists. Visitors can experience interesting exhibits, programs, special events, clubs, trips, and volunteer opportunities. Indoor and outdoor ponds, live animals, a lapidary laboratory, and a seasonal butterfly garden are some of the unique components of this facility. Many programs are closely coordinated with the county's public school curriculum, making Clearwater Nature Center a great place for school trips. Walk in on your own, or visit the facility as part of a group to explore live mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds of prey (including a bald eagle).

In addition to the nature center, Cosca Regional Park offers a variety of activities for people of all ages. The park is more than 690 acres in size, some of which have been developed for recreational use, but much of the park remains in its natural, undeveloped state. There are over five miles of hiking trails. There is also an 11-acre lake that offers fishing for bluegill, bass, catfish and trout. Paddle boat rentals are available for use on the lake from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The tram train operates between these holidays as well. The park has an extensive playground within walking distance to the lake, and both sheltered picnic areas and pavilions. Twenty-five campsites are available for rental year round.

Program Offerings: Indoor Curriculum Based Programs LIVE ANIMAL SHOW Using a variety of live animals, students will enjoy a hands-on learning experience as they discover where the animals live, what they eat, how they move, how they adapt to survive, and much more.

DINOSAURS AND FOSSILS Travel back in time to discover the secrets of prehistoric life. Investigate prehistoric plants and animals using visual aids, fossils, games and hands-on activities.

Age Group: K & up METAMORPHOSIS AND INSECTS Explore the world of insects and how they benefit the environment with a special focus on life cycles and metamorphosis of butterflies, moths, and amphibians. Make scientific observations using multimedia, visual aids, and specimens. Includes a hike to search for insects.

Age Group: Grades 2-8 ROCKS & MORE ROCKS Classify rocks by their properties: size, weight, color, texture, and shape. A hands-on presentation examines nature's building blocks and explores uses for these natural resources.

Age Group: Grades 2-8 VIVACIOUS VERTEBRATES Using multimedia, visual aids, and live animals, explore the characteristics and habitats of vertebrates: mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, and amphibians. Focus will be on the adaptations for survival: locomotion, diet, body coverings, communication, reproduction, migration, hibernation, and dormancy.

Age Group: Grades 2-8 WETLANDS AND THE BAY Focus on various wetlands, their functions and their importance to the health of the Chesapeake Bay. Hike along the creek or lake and discuss the water cycle, watersheds, pollution, erosion, and other factors affecting wetlands. Use charts, nets, and trays to study live aquatic animals and plants. Students should wear old clothes and shoes that can get wet.

Age Group: Grades 2-8 PLANTS, PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND CYCLES This is a grade appropriate exploration program with an emphasis on plant structure, functions, characteristics, and reproduction. Learn the importance of green plants and energy flow, the process of photosynthesis, and the respiration cycle. Students will hike to an area to study biotic and abiotic features of forest ecosystems using visual aids, multimedia, and measuring tools. Team up and play a competitive game.

Age Group: Grades 2-8 INDIANS OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND Examine artifacts and tools to learn about historical Eastern Woodland Indian cultures and how they used natural resources. Multimedia and outdoor activities included.

Outdoor Programs RAPTOR CENSUS Join us as we seek out as many of our wintering birds of prey as possible. Learn how to spot and identify hawks, eagles, and possibly falcons. Bring a bag lunch/drink and dress for the weather. Binoculars and field guides are recommended.

Age Group: 14 & up TIMBERDOODLE HIKE Join a naturalist for a hike to see the spectacular courtship display of the "Timberdoodle" or American Woodcock. This mysterious bird reliably performs a spiraling flight display shortly after sunset.

Age Group: 6 years old & up FALL HIKING SPREE Enjoy a naturalist-led woodland nature hike in Cosca Park. Registration through SMARTlink is required. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 16 during the program. Adults must also register for the program.

Age Group: All ages CREEK HIKE Come explore, examine, and identify the many creatures found in a local creek using dip nets. Dress to get wet. Wear wading boots, water shoes, or old sneakers that can get wet/muddy.

Age Group: 5 years old & up REPTILE SHOW AND HIKE Meet and learn about a variety of reptiles from the nature center’s collection and touch one if you like. Then join a naturalist for a short hike to look for reptiles. See and meet up close some of the nature center’s live animals Age Group: 6 years old & up

Children’s Programs PUPPET SHOWS Join our naturalists for a fun-filled puppet show with a nature theme appropriate for the season.

Age Group: 2-10 years old CSI: NATURE DETECTIVES Join us as you become a CSI (Critter Scene Investigator) to explore a simulated crime scene using a variety of investigative techniques such as track analysis, dissection, scat examination, or bone and skull identification.

NATURE: EXPLORE INSECTS Explore the anatomy of insects and learn about their life cycles and how they can be helpful. A craft is included along with a short hike to search for and observe local insects.

Age Group: 5 years old & up NATURE: EXPLORE ANIMAL TRACKS Learn how to search for animals by using clues such as tracks (footprints), scat, and chew marks. Make a plaster cast of an animal track Age Group: 7 years old & up

Any age may join this program as part of the supportive audience, but only individuals ages 10 & up will be allowed to volunteer to participate in the challenges. Participants selected for the challenges must sign a release form.

Age Group: 2 years old & up FAMILY FOSSIL HUNT Van/car pool to a local fossil site to collect these unique specimens from the past. Bring a sturdy plastic bag and shoes that can get wet.

Age Group: 6 years old & up FAMILY CAMPFIRE Enjoy a nature program and roasting tasty marshmallows. Marshmallows and roasting sticks will be provided. You may bring your own hot dogs and drinks if you like. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 16 during the program. Adults must also register for the program.

ANIMAL AMORE Join a naturalist for an interactive program on animal courtship displays and meet some of our resident romantics. Explore some of the fun and sometimes silly things animals do to find a mate.

Age Group: 2 years old & up WHO LET THE SNAKES OUT? St. Patrick didn’t drive the snakes out of Ireland. There’s another reason there are no snakes in Ireland. This program will discuss the legend and some fascinating information about these reptiles. Some snake myths will also be discussed and dispelled.

Age Group: 2 years old & up TRICKY WILDLIFE Learn about animals who are “sly like a fox” and use deception in their daily lives to avoid danger. Animals use tactics such as camouflage, mimicry, and even losing body parts to save themselves. Some of the nature center’s animals and their tricks will be featured.

Age Group: 2 years old & up TADPOLES Learn about animals and nature through story time with a naturalist, enjoy stories or games focusing on an animal guest, or become part of a nature story through interpretive, dynamic movements.

Age Group: 3-5 years

Teen Programs THE INCREDIBLE RACE Teams of five will race through Cosca Park completing a series of challenges some mental, some physical. The top three teams to arrive at the final destination win.

Age Group: 14-17 years old OVERNIGHT ADVENTURE Teens: can you face the challenge of an overnight adventure? Experience camping, ropes/challenge course, hikes and other fun nature activities.

Age Group: 14-17 years old TEEN SCARE FACTOR Test your nerves and face your fears during a series of fun nature-related challenges involving insects, snakes and more. Teens must have parent signed form in order to participate in the challenges. Participants must sign a release form.

Adult Programs BUTTERFLY GARDENING WORKSHOP Activities and topics discussed include, planning and starting a garden, planting, repotting techniques, and recommended gardening tools. Participants will receive a butterflyattracting plant for their home garden. This is a hands-on workshop, so please dress for the outdoors.

Age Group: 18 years old & up JEWELRY MAKING WITH BOB: CABOCHONS Students will learn the basics of gem cutting as you create your own cabochon using diamond saws, grinders, and polishing equipment. Students need to bring a pair of safety goggles to class and bring an apron to protect clothing or wear clothes that can get wet and oily. Learn how to use rock cutting and polishing equipment to make your own cabochon!

Age Group: 18 years old & up JEWELRY MAKING WITH LORNA: INTRO TO WIRE WRAPPING In this introductory course, students will learn to bend and twist decorative wire to make one pair of earrings and a pendant. An extra $12 material kit fee (check or cash) is due at the start of each class.

Age Group: 16 years old & up JEWELRY MAKING WITH LORNA: STERLING SILVER CHAINS Using small circles of sterling silver wire to make various patterned chains, students will make a jump-ring bracelet. A material kit fee (check or cash) is due at the start of each class. Material kit fee for this class is around $15 or may be slightly higher as it is based on the prevailing price of silver.

Age Group: 16 years old & up JEWELRY MAKING WITH LORNA: BEAD WEAVING Students will make two pairs of earrings or a pair of earrings and a bracelet in this workshop. Seed beads are not used in this class. An extra $12 material kit fee (check or cash) is due at the start of each class.

Age Group: 16 years old & up JEWELRY MAKING WITH LORNA: KNOTTING BEADS Students will make a 16- to 20-inch necklace using knots between gem beads and learn to use a bead tip tool. An extra $12 material kit fee (check or cash) is due at the start of each class.

Special Events GEM, MINERAL AND FOSSIL SHOW The Southern Maryland Rock & Mineral Club hosts a show and sale. Included are demonstrations of cabochon making, faceting, bead weaving, and gold panning. Vendors sell fossils, gems and minerals. A children’s jewelry craft is also available.

Age Group: 2 years old & up PREHISTORIC PARTY Dig into the past to learn about Maryland’s Dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. See genuine fossils and dig for your own as a junior paleontologist. Enjoy crafts, a puppet show, and see live animal shows to learn how some modern creatures have connections to prehistoric ancestors.

Age Group: 3 years old & up NATURE FAIR Families enjoy live music, animal shows, nature exhibits and crafts, games with prizes, and food with some healthy food options, all in a serene setting in the woods behind the nature center.

Age Group: All ages KOOKY NOT SPOOKY The Kooky Not Spooky non-scary Halloween event features hayrides, crafts, marshmallow roasting and hot cocoa around the campfire. There will be live creepy, crawly creatures. Wearing a Halloween costume is encouraged.

Home School Programs NATURE FRIENDS A home-school science club where children will experience nature through multimedia presentations, discussions, stories, hikes, and crafts. Each class focuses on a different nature theme. Class meets once a month for 4 months.

NATURE RANGERS Students will experience a series of four (4) in-depth nature classes using live animals, preserved specimens, artifacts, multimedia presentations, discussions, hikes, and other hands-on activities to explore the world of natural science. Classes meet once a month.

Age Group: 7-9 years old NATURE EXPLORERS Students will experience a series of four (4) in-depth nature classes using live animals, preserved specimens, artifacts, multimedia presentations, discussions, hikes, and other hands-on activities to explore the world of natural science. Classes meet once a month.

Age Group: 10-14 years old HOME SCHOOL FIBER ARTS Home School students learn about knitting, crocheting, spinning, weaving, and other fiber arts. There is no experience necessary. Supply kits are available for an additional fee.

Age Group: 7 and up

Birthday Parties Surprise your child with a live animal show at his or her next birthday party. Party package consists of three (3) hour use of our auditorium and a live animal presentation.

You can also fill up your gift bags with items purchased from our Terrapin Treasures Gift Shop at a 15% discount. Maximum room capacity of both children and adults is 40 people.

Summer Camps NATURE SEEKERS Learn about the world of nature through crafts, hikes, stories and games in this half-day camp. Themes include Forests, Wetlands, Animals, and Plants. Snacks provided. NOTE: This is a half day camp. Extended care is not available for pre-school camps.

Age Group: 4-5 years old NATURE DETECTIVES If you listen closely there are ‘clues’ in nature that tell a story. Children will spend the week discovering the wonders of plants and animals through a range of indoor and outdoor activities including hikes, crafts and games during this all day camp.

Age Group: 6-7 years old OUTDOOR EXPLORERS Experience nature through indoor and outdoor games, crafts, hikes, and hands-on animal and plant activities during this all day camp.

WETLAND WANDERERS Explore local ponds, rivers, and streams on foot and by boat. Activities include the catching, studying, and release of wetland creatures and daily expeditions to search for wildlife clues. Expect to get wet every day.

Age Group: 8-10 years old BUG HOUNDS Experience nature through indoor and outdoor games, crafts, hikes, and hands-on animal and plant activities.

Age Group: 8-10 years old WILDLIFE SAFARI Explore and discover a variety of wildlife from local and international habitats. Activities include animal shows, hikes and field trips.

Age Group: 8-10 years old EXTREME ADVENTURERS Embark on adventures such as canoeing, whitewater rafting, geo-caching and hiking.

Participants provide their own sleeping bags and backpacks for overnight camping Thursday night.

Age Group: 11-13 years old JR. NATURALIST CAMP Teens- ever wonder what it is like to be a Park Naturalist? Spend the week learning more about the natural world around you, gain knowledge of possible career choices in this and other related fields, and earn service learning hours for school.

Age Group: 13–15 years old ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE CAMP Teens will gain an appreciation for natural and environmental science concepts and gain hands-on knowledge and experience. Challenge and encourage each other as you embark upon a wide variety of team-oriented activities designed to prepare you for the Envirothon challenge.

Scout Programs CUB SCOUT ACTIVITY BADGE PROGRAMS Cub Scout groups can schedule an exciting activity badge program designed for fun and knowledge. Activities available for Webelos to earn Forester, Naturalist, and Geologist badges.

BOY SCOUT ACTVITY BADGE PROGRAMS Boy Scout groups can schedule activity badge programs in order to earn merit badges in Animal Science, Bird Study, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Forestry, Gardening,

Geology, Mammal Study, Nature, Geology, Plant Science, Reptile and Amphibian Study, and Weather.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Clearwater Nature Center offers a variety of volunteer positions for adults and teens.

Volunteer positions offered include animal care aide, greenhouse and gardens aide, naturalist aide, nature fair aide, nature trail and maintenance aide, Twilight Terrors aide, puppeteer aide, secretarial/office aide, Weed Warriors, and Summer Day Camp assistant.

Mt. Rainier Nature & Recreation Center, located inside the Capital Beltway, is Prince George’s County’s only urban nature center. This nature center features hands-on exhibits as well as live animals. We offer a wide variety of natural history interpretive programs for the community and school groups. The center also features a recreation room available for parties, workshops, receptions, and meetings, and a game room available for youth, adults, and families visiting the center.

Curriculum Based School Programs & Home School Science Program Enjoy a variety of curriculum-based natural science program for students ages 4-14.

On The Go Puppet Show This is fun and educational curriculum based on a show that consist of many characters and the wonders of nature and science. The show includes one live animal.

Live Animal Show Get up close and personal to an assortment of live animals. Learn all about their characteristics. Touch some of them and other interesting animal parts such as furs, bones, and feathers.

On the Go Campfires A Naturalist will engage you in great tales of nature, show an animal or two, sing songs, and much more all around a cozy campfire just for you. Have a campfire at our site or we can come to you.

Nature Hikes Go on a forest or creek hike with a Naturalist. Explore, examine, and identify the flora and fauna in our local parks and creeks.

Birding Bonanza Explore some of the local birding hot spots in and around the national capital area.

Ages 18 & up.

Nature Club Explore Nature and have fun with activities, games, projects, and more. Ages 5-12 Toddler Time This is a parent-led activity held Thursdays to have fun and explore the nature center.

Enjoy feeding turtles, hands on nature treasures, crafts, stories and more. Ages 1-5 with parents.

Cheetah Girls Club Here is a girls chance to learn about nature, sewing, pom-pom, dance, etiquette, cooking, fashion, beauty, self-esteem, and more. Girls Ages 8-11 Zumba Plus This Zumba blends Latin and International music and dance themes and creates a dynamic and exciting workout. It includes toning and abs exercises Xtreme Teen Nights & Open Recreation Preteens and Teens spend time at the center in the evening enjoying recreational activities Adventure Seekers Enjoy canoeing, hiking, museums and trips to natural and historical sites. Ages 8-12 Teen Fusion & Stay and Play Have fun at the nature center after school. Do your homework, work on projects, relax in the game room, earn service learning hours, and more. Ages 8-17 Synergy Volunteer Program Synergy Volunteer Program challenges teenagers to become responsible and productive.

Empowered to live a healthy lifestyles, teens participate in service learning projects stewardship opportunities of natural, cultural and historical resources. They’ll engage in social awareness campaign and positive leisure and recreation activities.

Live animal displays feature native owls, hawks, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. Indoor and outdoor ponds, a songbird feeding area, and a squirrel gym that showcases tricks to eating corn on the run entertain our visitors. For information on school and family programs, please review the following programs. For information on program fees, please contact Watkins Nature Center during business hours. The center is open Monday-Saturday from 8:30 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. and on Sundays and holidays from 11:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. In addition to the nature center, Watkins Regional Park also offers many other activities for visitors. Seasonal facilities such as the Chesapeake Carousel, train, and miniature golf course are a short walk from the nature center. Just beyond the train station, you will find Old Maryland Farm, an educational farm facility open to the public offering agricultural exhibits, livestock, display gardens, and interpretive programs. The Watkins Regional Park Tennis Bubble encompasses five indoor tennis courts and offers a variety of options for contract and spot time, age specific instruction, leagues, and rentals. There are also nine easy-to-follow color blazed nature trails throughout the park.

Program Offerings: Indoor Curriculum Based Programs MAKING SENSE OF NATURE Use your senses to meet animals and learn in a child-friendly way to touch and enjoy nature. Students will: 1) identify the five senses and the related body parts, 2) classify objects based on sensory information to include color, texture, size, sound, taste or shape.

WILD THINGS Targeted to your age group, the naturalist chooses several live animals to introduce, which can include reptiles, mammals, or birds of prey. Students will: 1) identify the different characteristics of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians, and 2) learn about local animal species.

Age Group: Pre-K - adult BE AN EARTH SAVER Describes how to be an earth saver by recycling, reducing, and reusing garbage and identifies the recycling symbol (Reduce, Re-use, Recycle). Students will identify and sort items, which can be recycled.

Age Group: Grades 2 - 5 REPTILES & AMPHIBIANS Meet local and exotic snakes, turtles, frogs and toads. Students will: 1) observe the life cycle characteristics of an amphibian, 2) describe the differences between a reptile and an amphibian, and 3) investigate and explore the behavioral patterns of reptiles and amphibians.

Age Group: Grade 1 - adult INSECTS VS. SPIDERS Compare and contrast the differences between insects and spiders. Students will: 1) identify the different characteristics of insects and spiders, 2) learn about the varying life cycles of insects, and 3) investigate and explore predictable behavioral patterns of insects and spiders.

Abraham Hall 7612 Muirkirk Road Phone: 240-264-3415 TTY: 301-669-2544 Fax: 240-264-3497 Built in 1889 for the Benevolent Sons and Daughters of Abraham, Abraham Hall is the County’s most outstanding example of a late 19th century African American benevolent society lodge.

Chartered in 1877, The Sons and Daughters provided emergency financial assistance and death benefits to its members and served as a form of insurance not otherwise available to African Americans.

For over 130 years Abraham Hall was used in various ways including a meeting place and landmark within the African American community of Rossville. The community’s namesake, Augustus Ross, was one of its first settlers. He purchased one of 12 parcels of land from the estate of wealthy landowner Mark Duvall. The Benevolent Sons and Daughters of Abraham purchased the largest (3.85 acres) of the twelve parcels as the site for its lodge.

The Lodge became the largest and most substantial building in Rossville. After Queen’s Chapel, the community church, burned down in the 1890s, services were held in Abraham Hall until 1901, when the church completed work on a new chapel. The lodge was also used as a schoolhouse in the years before the construction of Muirkirk School in 1922.

Abraham Hall is the first African American historic site in Prince George’s County, Maryland to be restored with public funds. Its restoration in 1990 marked a significant milestone in the County’s historic preservation efforts. The Black History Program is housed at Abraham Hall.

Darnall’s Chance House Museum 14800 Governor Oden Bowie Drive Upper Marlboro, MD 20772 Phone: (301) 952-8010/TTY: 301-699-2544 Fax: 301-952-1773 Darnall’s Chance was built in 1742 by James Wardrop, a Scottish immigrant, who amassed a fortune as a merchant and entrepreneur in the bustling port-town of Upper Marlborough, Maryland. In 1748, he married Lettice Lee, daughter of Phillip Lee, the progenitor of the Maryland branch of the illustrious Lee family of Virginia.

The Wardrops’ 15-Georgian mansion was the mainstay of a dwelling complex that included eight brick outbuildings, a rare brick burial vault, ornamental and vegetable gardens, an orchard and livestock. The household included 32 enslaved African Americans who worked in the house, outbuildings and gardens as well as at Mr. Wardrop’s store.

Following Wardrop’s death in 1760, Lettice Lee married medical pioneer Dr. Adam Thomson and, later, Revolutionary War patriot Colonel Joseph Sim. She died on April 3, 1776.

The house was remodeled in 1857, and produced such a drastic change that the original Georgian appearance of Lettice Lee’s home was soon lost to common knowledge. In 1986, the house was saved from demolition and returned to its 1742 appearance.

Museum tours highlight the similarities and differences between Lettice Lee’s life and the lives of other 18th century women – gentry, middling and enslaved. In addition, the Museum offers special events, exhibits and programs.

Trading Places: The Life of an 18th Century Tenant Farm Family Students will learn what kind of home and tools a colonial tenant farmer needed to survive and what products a farmer produced. Children must analyze a colonial farm and develop their own version of an 18th century farm complex. They also have a chance to visit an 18th century store where they will trade their homemade farm products for retail goods that they can’t produce on their own farm. Reservations required.

Education Programs PINCH, NO SMILES: EARLY NINETEENTH CENTURY PLAY AT RIVERSDALE This program is designed to introduce students to Riversdale by using the perspective of a child. George and Rosalie Calvert had nine children, five of whom lived to adulthood.

Students on this tour will move from room to room and discover the ways in which an early nineteenth-century child would have played, worked, and lived in each room. In addition, slave children also resided at Riversdale. Students will compare and contrast their living, working, and playing conditions with that of the Calvert children. Students

will also participate in a hands on workshop where they will learn a traditional English country dance and play the game, Pinch, No Smiles. Fulfills VSC Standard: Individuals and society change over time. Fee applies.

Age Group: Grades 1 - 4 OUT OF THE SHADOWS: RIVERSDALE’S SERVANTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT This program will highlight the inner economic workings of an early 19th century Maryland estate and working farm. The central role as mistress of the household was to oversee all domestic tasks. She ran a staff of servants composed of free whites and enslaved African Americans who processed the crops, cooked, cleaned, served meals, took care of the children, and made textiles among other duties. Students will view each room in the house from the perspective of a servant and participate in a workshop where each child will role-play servants’ experiences. Special Needs Programs SENSING THE PAST This program is designed for students who have physical or mental disabilities. Groups that can negotiate the stairs take a 20 minute tour of the house. Those with physical disabilities tour only the rooms on the ground level – this tour is enhanced by a museum teacher-led interactive PowerPoint presentation of the rest of the rooms. All students participate in a workshop where they use their senses to make history come alive. They will feel, pick, and card wool and they will make an herb sachet to take home. Junior Girl Scout Programs FOLK ARTS Folk traditions are those that are passed down from generation to generation and learned by observation and imitation. The products of folk art are aesthetically embellished objects that have a utilitarian purpose and do not necessarily need the decoration to carry out that purpose. In this program, scouts will compare and contrast fine art with folk art, make theorem paintings, learn an English country dance, and learn about quilts. Fee applies.

Age Group: Juniors ARCHITECTURE ADVENTURES Riversdale, completed in 1807, is unique to the area in that it includes elements of both traditional American Federal and European architecture. Surratt House Museum 9118 Brandywine Road Clinton, MD 20735 Phone: 301-868-1121 Fax: 301-868-8177 TTY: 301-699-2544 Built in 1852 as a middle-class farm house for the family of John and Mary Surratt, the historic Surratt House also served as a tavern and hostelry, a post office and polling place during the crucial decade before the Civil War. In the fall of 1864, the Surratt family became entangled in a plot by John Wilkes Booth to kidnap President Abraham Lincoln. Booth’s scheme turned to assassination on April 14, 1865. The assassin stopped at the tavern on his flight out of Washington to retrieve weapons and supplies which had been hidden there. As a result, Mary Surratt was tried and convicted of conspiracy to assassinate the President. On July 7, 1865, she became the first woman to be executed by the federal government.

Today the museum presents a variety of programs and events, recapturing the history of mid-19th century life and focusing on the fascinating web of the Lincoln assassination conspiracy. In addition to the special programs and events the Surratt House Museum offers guided tours of the historic house with knowledgeable and experienced costumed guides. The museum also offers educational tours to school groups K- 12. School tours meet Maryland’s voluntary state curriculum standards.

All tours begin at the Surratt Visitor’s Center and Gift Shop. A small admission fee benefits the preservation of the Surratt House, a historic property of The MarylandNational Capitol Park and Planning Commission.

The museum is open to the public on Thursdays and Fridays, 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. and Saturdays and Sundays, 12pm to 4pm from mid-January through midDecember. During the months of July and August, tours are also offered on Wednesdays from 11am to 3pm. The last tour on all days begins one-half hour before the closing times listed. Archaeology Site Tours NORHTAMPTON SLAVE QUARTERES AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK This outdoor exhibit features the rebuilt foundations of two former slave quarters of the Northampton tobacco plantation (1673 – 1860). A self-guided tour interprets the lives of enslaved and free African-Americans from the 1790s until the 1930s. Group tours and school trips may be arranged.

Age Group: All ages CHERRY HILL CEMETERY Cherry Hill Cemetery is a late 1800s African American family burial ground. Established in 1884 on the farm of Josiah Adams, it is significant as the only intact African American family cemetery in the Bladensburg-Riverdale-Hyattsville area. Graves are marked with slabs of local ironstone and yucca plants. Many African Ame4ican families, such as the Adams, Becketts, and Plummers, buried their loved ones at Cherry Hill from the late 1880s through the 1940s.

Clubs CONSERVATION CLUB The perfect opportunity for those interested in nature and the outdoors to complete their high school service learning hours. Work with Park Rangers on conservation projects throughout Prince George’s County. Activities include tree planning, trail enhancement, river clean-ups, and outdoor educational opportunities.

This one week camp will expose you to a variety of activities, such as a challenge ropecourse, kayaking, hiking, geocaching, archery, and so much more. This program instills confidence and promotes leadership skills, while learning about the environment and wildlife.

Responsibilities include removing debris, reporting trail needs, and performing small projects. Groups are recognized with a sign along their section of the trail. Ideal for scouts, families, schools, community and church groups. Materials provided.

KEEPERS OF THE EARTH Learn about the American Indians that inhabited the Maryland and East Coast area.

Listen to legends from the Keepers of the Earth series, see Native American Artifacts that have been found in the area, learn a Native American Living Skill, or create a Native American Craft.

WATER WONDERS These include learning about water conservation and quality. Students can explore a stream in Water Safari (Students need to wear or have old shoes or boots) or they can learn about Wetland Critters or go on a Wetland Hike. They can learn about Ground Water as they interact with our Groundwater model. Who Polluted the Patuxent? Learn the pieces of the puzzle that can answer our questions about pollution. Or just enjoy your time canoeing or fishing.

ADVENTURE CHALLENGE: ADVENTURE CONNECTIONS (TEAM BUILDING & TRUST) Learn about Team Building and Problem Solving as your group participates in a variety of challenges. Or build your self-esteem as you experience our High Ropes Challenge course.

Age and Other Requirements: Students need permission slips, must be over 12 and/or weight 90 lbs. COST $25 per person. Health information & sign permission slips needed from parent/guardian of anyone under 18 years old and for MNCPPC we need a contract.

Youth Camp Programs DAY CAMPS A fast moving day (8:30A.M. – 4:30 P.M.) filled with fun environmental activities, creative games, fantastic crafts, and S’more fun! Camp also means meeting new friends and creating memories to last a lifetime. Lunch is included in our price. Before and after care can also be provided at an additional cost. *FOR ages 12-15 years, we will be offering “LIT” (Leaders In Training) Camp for a limited number (10-12) of campers planning on becoming future camp counselors. This program will run simultaneously with our Day Camp. The LITs will be learning leadership, team building and communication skills as well as have some hands-on practical experience at our day camp program.

MINI-CAMP ADVENTURES This is an optional one night sleep over adventure for the first time and/or younger campers. After several days at our Day Camp, the kids can spend Thursday night at camp. They sleep in our cabins, bring their sleeping bags and personal items (teddy bears are allowed to join us too). There is plenty of TLC to help the youngest campers through

their first night away from home. *You must attend Day Camp to be eligible for Mini-Camp.

RESIDENT CAMP A traditional 4-H based overnight Camp with a Chesapeake Bay theme. This year many classes will highlight the Bay and it's wilderness areas. Campers will learn some Chesapeake Bay history, legends and a verity of skills such as canoeing, archery, crafts and foods of the Chesapeake region. We will incorporate many Environmental activities as we learn to appreciate our natural surroundings.

The park is nestled among the port towns of Bladensburg, Colmar Manor, Edmonston and Cottage City, Maryland. It provides a unique recreational and historical resource for visitors and residents.

The park, formerly known as the Bladensburg Marina, is located on the Anacostia River, east of Bladensburg’s Peace Cross Memorial. The visitor center offers interpretive historical displays and nature exhibits. This unique waterfront park features a paved riverside walk, picnic pavilion, public fishing pier, free boat ramp, community boathouse (storage facility), and canoe, kayak, paddleboat and rowboat rentals on weekends. Canoe and kayak lessons, guided canoe tours, and free boat tours provide ways to explore this urban watershed. A pedestrian bridge over the Anacostia River links the park to the Anacostia Tributary Trail System.

Visitors will learn the details of this chapter of the War of 1812 from an interpreter dressed in period clothing.

Some are offered year round while others are seasonal. A reservation is required for all program activities. Program Offerings: Interpretive Programs BASKET WEAVING Learn how to weave a basket using natural materials. One-day classes range from 3 to 6 hours long. Limited to 10 participants. Fees apply.

Age Group: 12 years old to adult BIRDING TRIPS The Jug Bay area provides for some of the most outstanding birding found anywhere in Maryland. Guided birding trips are available year round. GEARS FROM YESTERYEAR This program tells the story of rural life in southern Maryland 100 years ago. Students learn through observation and hands-on activities. A tour of the Duvall Tool Museum, blacksmith shop, the Duckett log cabin, the Sears House and the Tobacco Farming Museum are included. Fees apply.

Age Group: 7 - 12 years old GUIDED NATURE HIKES The Black Walnut Creek Nature Study Area provides a unique opportunity to observe the tidal and nontidal wetlands of the river. Boardwalks provide easy access to these valuable habitats. Fees apply.

Age Group: 6 years old - adult JOURNEY INTO JUG BAY’S PAST There is 10,000 years of human history on the Patuxent River. Historians tell the story aboard the park’s pontoon boat with a stop at Mt. Calvert Historical & Archaeological Park. Fees apply.

Age Group: 13 years old - adult ON THE WATER This series of three environmental programs offer participants an extensive look at the ecology of wetlands and its wildlife. The Marsh program teaches the functions of wetlands and their importance to the environment. Five-hour program April-October.

Limited to 12 participants. The Osprey program teaches how wildlife management practices have helped this bird of prey recover. Visit to Osprey nest included. Five-hour program. June. Limited to 12 participants. The Goose Music program teaches about the biology, management, and conservation of the Canada Goose in Maryland. Age Group: 13 years old - adult RIVER ECOLOGY BOAT TOUR A guided boat tour gives participants the opportunity to learn about the river’s wetlands, wildlife, and history from the water. Students will learn the identification of common plants and animals, the current research being conducted by the park staff and the management issues needed to protect the ecosystem. April-October. Outdoor Activities CONSERVATION ACTIVITIES The park offers several activities that help preserve the resources of the park. Invasive and non-native plants that have invaded the park need to be destroyed or removed. The park also has over 8 miles of trails that need continual maintenance and repair. Lastly, the park sponsors an annual river clean-up event the first Saturday in April. This is done in cooperation with other agencies and conservation organizations along the Patuxent River. No fees.

Age Group: Grade 5 - Adult GEOCACHING Try high-tech orienteering and scavenger hunting. Learn how to use a GPS unit and find the treasure in the park. Limited to 20 participants. Fees apply.

Age Group: K-10 NATURE CRAFTS This program for pre-school aged students is designed to introduce them to a specific nature topic through stories, activities and crafts. Topics include owls, leaves and animal tracks.

SKINNY AS A RAIL The secretive Sora Rail, a small marsh bird that migrates through Jug Bay, once numbered in the thousands. Today, their numbers have declined and very little is known about them. On this exploration, participants learn about Soras and why Jug Bay is an important migratory stopover.

Age Group: Age 13-Adult STATE OF THE BAY The Chesapeake Bay is an invaluable natural and economic resource of Maryland. This program for high school students draws attention to the environmental issues of the Chesapeake Bay and uses the Patuxent River as a model to identify problems and possible solutions.
