Hello friends,

My grandmother kept a hot pot of coffee in her tiny kitchen every day, all day, for my nine aunts who would drop by regularly for a visit, to deliver an Avon or Mary Kay order, or to pick up one of us kids after an afternoon of Nickelodeon. She would pay me a quarter to comb her hair and I’d stand behind her, folded into the yellow curtains, and take in bits of gossip and concern, jokes and small pieces of wisdom about work and marriage and family, while gently pulling a plastic unbreakable comb through my grandma’s shiny auburn hair, wondering at her thick white roots.

I think of her now during my book clubs and monthly Zoom calls with my girlfriends when we knit and cook together, discuss the books we are devouring and the parents we are worried for, as we tug our cats off our keyboards. These are the places I know to go when I have good news to share or bad news to process. The women in my life have taught me how to take care of myself and of others, how to feel beautiful and how to laugh at myself, how to endure terrible pain and, yes, what it feels like to laugh through tears.

Playwright Robert Harling wrote Steel Magnolias over ten days in 1985 in one of those rare frenzies of genius. Within two years, the play was on Broadway and, by 1989, had become a beloved film. I feel both tender and delighted to welcome you to our production, featuring some of the most iconic actresses I know. We have spent the last month falling in love with these formidable women and growing our own friendships through the sweet lightness of funny stories and clothing swaps, and through the profound rigor of being charged to bring all our expertise to bare to build something extraordinary together. Welcome. We are so glad to transport you back in time to Truvy’s Salon in beautiful Chinquapin Parish, Louisiana. Feel free to pull up a chair, kick back, and have a chat with your neighbor - we’ll be right with you.
