Neighborhood News Working Together for a GREAT Neighborhood

President’s Message

PGE Is Online

Like Lauri and me, I suspect you’ve had enough winter at this point. Getting up in the dark, bundling up, going out in the cold to work or to the store: these are things I can absolutely do without. But while more of this stuff may lie ahead, we’ve turned the corner on the weather—trust me on this!—and soon we’ll be out puttering in our yards planting flowers, trimming shrubs, and just enjoying our beautiful neighborhood.

The Plum Grove Estates Web site, http://www.pgepoa.org, provides neighborhood information at any time and anywhere. The site officially went live in January 2010 and includes the association by-laws and covenants, an area map, newsletters, notices, event photos, and committee and board information.

Last year was an eventful and, I believe, a productive one for your Board of Directors and Officers. We tackled several projects, including entrances and islands, which will be concluded this spring. We also launched our PGE website, with the hope and expectation that you will find this a very useful informational tool. Our social events were very well attended and provided lots of fun for our families. Over 130 residents attended the Christmas party, up from about 80 in 2008. What a great tribute this is to all of you! Unlike most places where I’ve lived, Plum Grove Estates provides the personal privacy that each of us values and lots of great opportunities to get to know your neighbors. We see walkers, runners, bikers (not so much in February) on a daily basis. We have many things to enjoy and be grateful for. As I have in the past, I am encouraging you to find some way you can contribute to making Plum Grove Estates an even better place to live.

There are always opportunities, and we can only imagine the array of talents that exist among us. Can you help us set up for PGE meetings or one of our parties? What about writing a contribution of general interest for our newsletter or Web site? Do you know an exceptional vendor or service provider whom other residents might love to know about? If you go to our Web site, www.pgepoa.org, you can email me or any of the other officers and directors to volunteer your time or to provide us with your thoughts and suggestions. We would really love to hear from you. In the meantime, stay warm and well and look forward to what I’m sure (?) will be an early spring! Randy Mitchell PGE POA President president@pgepoa.org

You can download this newsletter from the PGE POA Web site instead of receiving a printed copy. This saves printing and postage costs, and you can get your copy before the printed version is delivered! Send an email to Andrea Brennan, webadmin@pgepoa.org, to opt in to the e-newsletter list. Do you use Facebook and/or LinkedIn? Join the group Friends of Plum Grove Estates or Plum Grove Estates Neighborhood Network. These groups are not a function of the PGE Property Owners Association but are a great way to connect with your neighbors.

www.bairdwarner.com

For PGE houses in the Township of Schaumburg, yard waste is picked up by your waste recycling company on Wednesdays. Branch pickup takes place on the first and third Monday from May through October.

Major Landscaping and Home Improvement Requires Approval from the PGE Board Planning landscaping or an exterior home improvement that will cost over $1000? Depending on your project, you might need written approval from the PGE Board and possibly also a permit from the township and/or Cook County. Please submit a letter explaining your project to Dave Gearhart, the chairperson for architectural control, PRIOR to starting your project. You can phone Dave at 847-303-5274 or email him at vicepresident@pgepoa.org. Any contractor you hire must be registered with Cook County, be licensed, and be bonded for $100,000.00. Your PGE Directory provides more information about which permits are required for various projects. This information is also posted on the PGE Web site: http://www.pgepoa.org/homeowners-information.

PGE Paves The Way The last part of the Palatine Township three-year Plum Grove Estates subdivision paving project took place in Summer 2009. Previous paving of this area took place over 10 years ago. John Powers, Highway Commissioner, wrote “repaving on a regular schedule is much cheaper than allowing the pavement to deteriorate to the point that it requires massive patching and reconstruction.” (first appeared in the Summer 2009 Palatine Township newsletter) The next phase of of paving will be the responsibility of the Township of Schaumburg. The township applied for Federal funds in 2009 for transportation initiatives to pay for resurfacing in our area. According to the Foreman at the Highway Department, the engineering drawings are in progress now, and when the funding is received the project will be bid in April. Work is tentatively scheduled to begin in June. The City of Rolling Meadows will be improving the West Frontage Road between Kirchoff and Algonquin Roads. This project is provided 100% by Federal funds. The construction includes: • Concrete pavement patching (25% of the road). • Two-inch asphalt overlay (raised surface to help the road drain) • Curb, gutter, sidewalk, and guard rail repairs • Replacing gravel shoulder with 3’ paved shoulder • Drainage improvements Phase 1 begins March 1 and continues through the end of April 2010. • During construction only one lane will be open. • All traffic will be one way, southbound only, and restricted to local traffic. • Please use alternative routes during this time when possible. Reduced traffic in the construction work zone reduces the chance of accidents and the time needed for construction. Phase 2, pavement improvements for East Frontage Road, will begin May 1 and should end by the beginning of July. The one-way traffic in the single lane open will be northbound only for local traffic. PGE Plans New Entrances and Fences in 2010 The Area Control and Landscaping committee directors, along with the PGE Board are moving forward with plans to update and beautify the entrance areas of Plum Grove Estates. The new PGE sign will be raised and installed between two stone pillars. Fencing that complements the sign will be installed between the other pillars (see drawing). The new signs and fencing will be installed to replace the existing entrance signs along West Frontage Road and at the Westwood/Algonquin Road entrance. New PGE signs will also be placed at three interior entrances. The new design was presented to and approved by PGE residents at the Fall 2009 General Meeting. The sign presents the PGE logo along with the subdivision name. The vertical fencing is topped with

decorative circles at the top. Installation should be completed this Spring to early Summer. Other improvements include redoing the accent lighting. The cobblestone installation around certain islands will resume this Spring. If you have any questions about Area Control, please call Gary Dindia at 847-397-3640 or send email to areacontrol@pgepoa.org.

Landscape plantings for the areas with the new signs and fencing are being reviewed by Lynn Meinzer. The plantings should present a colorful, interesting, and beautiful appearance yet be hardy, drought tolerant, and easily maintained. The plantings will be installed by a landscape contractor. If you have questions about Landscaping, please call Lynn at 847-397-5832 or send email to social@pgepoa.org.

Holiday Party Approximately 130 Plum Grove Estates neighbors, including 50 children and teens, came to the annual holiday party at the Plum Grove Park clubhouse on December 6, 2009. A delicious hot buffet dinner was served. We also had festively decorated dessert tables loaded with neighbor-baked cakes, cookies, and pies. Live music was provided by Joe Hampton, Lynn Meinzer's very talented grandson. Thank you, Joe and Lynn! Thanks to everyone who came to cheer 2009 and welcome 2010!

Special Guest Kathy Camarda, PGE Sanitary District Trustee

Currently, PGE is running about double the flow rates that the Sanitary District is looking for; however we are less than 1% of the flow into the system. We have reduced from 4x the flow rate to 2x the flow rate, so we have made improvements. PGE homeowners have spent well over 1 million dollars to fix our flow rates. We’ve done our due diligence. Our lawyers are looking into reviewing the ICAP formula to get a waiver for PGE—otherwise, the Sanitary District could go to the next step of suing individual home owners. There is no good answer at this point. If you are pumping water into the system via your sump pumps, disconnect them!! It costs $6,000–$8,000 dollars every time we test our flow rates. Ideal situations are to test after 1 inch of rain.

signs now. Spotlights and accent lights won’t get replaced until signs are up—around March/April timeframe. Cobblestone repair around islands are on hold until springtime.
