The Harris Science Building’s 2nd floor has been transformed to accommodate the needs of Pfeiffer’s growing nursing program. The nursing lab features space for state-of-the-art teaching and learning, preparing students for clinical training in area hospitals.

Reorganization of Pfeiffer’s academic structure aligns programs by division. Deans of the new divisions are: Dr. Dawn Lucas; division of education; Dr. Mark McCallum, division of arts and science; Dr. Vernease Miller, division of health related programs; and Dr. Kenneth Bandy, division of business.

Dear Pfeiffer Alumni and Friends, Pfeiffer University has much to be grateful for this year, most of all our dedicated alumni, trustees, faculty, staff and friends whose faith in the institution and generous spirits have elevated the university to its current position of programmatic strength, financial health and inevitable optimism. In Misenheimer, Charlotte and the Research Triangle, students are preparing for 21st century careers in an environment that provides the foundation for lifelong learning that only a high-quality liberal arts experience can offer. The complementary natures of our quality-enhancement plan, Engaging Students to Think Critically, and First Year Experience program are having a positive effect on student retention. And realignment of our academic structure is providing students and faculty opportunities to work together in ways that offer seamless and practical transitions from undergraduate to graduate programs and cost-effective delivery. Programmatic and other important updates of note include: •➢ Renovations to Harris Science Building’s 2nd floor, designed specifically for the Department of Nursing’s specialized, state-ofthe-art clinical teaching and learning. Over the coming year, the largest learning space on Misenheimer’s campus, Harris Lecture Hall, will undergo significant renovation, thanks to a grant from the Charles A. Cannon Charitable Trusts. •➢ Introduction of a new major within the department of Accounting, Financial Fraud and Fraud Examinations, developed to meet the field’s projected need over the coming decade for internal auditors, risk managers, corporate security specialists and accounting professionals. •➢ Launch of a bachelor of arts degree in Human Relations, a degree completion program in Charlotte that prepares students not only for careers in the field but also graduate study in marriage and family therapy, social work, medical administration and more. •➢ Expansion of the Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy program the Research Triangle and the upcoming opening of a second Pfeiffer Institute clinic.

•➢ A deepening of our connection to the United Methodist Church with the addition of Rev. Sherri Barnes, associate director of university and church relations, as well as a new partnership among Pfeiffer University, Wesley Theological Seminary and Union Presbyterian Seminary to offer a UMC-approved master’s of divinity program in Charlotte at Union Presbyterian. These and similar efforts are fostering Pfeiffer’s emerging reputation as a leader in regional workforce development. Along with our Charlottebased Center for Professional Advancement, which offers certificate and other non-degree opportunities, our undergraduate and graduate programs will continue to provide students unmistakable value while enrolled at Pfeiffer and throughout their lives. Pfeiffer University thanks those whose generous contributions in 2011-2012 supported our efforts and inspired us to reach higher. Over the course of the year, more than 2,100 donors contributed $1.7 million to Pfeiffer. We recognize the trust you place in us to use your gifts wisely and appropriately; we hope our prudent stewardship reflects our gratitude. The names of our donors, whether gifts were made last year for the first time or as part of a lifetime of giving, appear in this publication. As indicated last year at this time, our giving societies began recognizing donors in 2011-2012 who gave restricted gifts as well as unrestricted gifts. Of course, gifts of any amount, to any fund, are vital and very much appreciated. Your support makes possible the fulfillment of Pfeiffer’s mission and its ability to serve the community, region and world in a meaningful way. Sincerely,

Michael C. Miller President

g n i m o c e m o H 2012 Remembering Why We “Care About Pfeiffer”

A time to reminisce, reconnect and recommit

Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends of Pfeiffer: Homecoming 2012 was the place to be if you were hoping to reconnect with old friends, classmates, teammates or Pfeiffer Place kids! With the greatest attendance in several years, this year’s Homecoming offered a wonderful chance to visit and catch up with our Pfeiffer Pfamily! If you made it to Misenheimer, undoubtedly you noticed how beautiful the campus looks: a new grill and snack bar and bookstore in Stokes, new windows in nearly every building and new space for the department of nursing in Harris Science Building. For an old science major like me, the transformation of Harris’s second floor to state-of-the-art clinical trainings space, well, it’s just thrilling!

Our next big event is Alumni “Night” on Sat., Feb. 16. I use quotation marks because women’s and men’s basketball takes place on that date at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively—day games—in Merner Gym. We hope you bring your entire family for the fun and festivities. Come cheer on our Falcons and visit with old and dear friends!

Pixie Klein Gentle ’83 President, Alumni Board

The department of nursing’s facility on the newly renovated 2nd floor of Harris Science Building officially opened during Homecoming weekend. Students demonstrated the programmable mannequins that help prepare them for clinical training. Doug Stokes, contractor for the space (second from right), was on hand for the announcement of Stokes Construction’s $25,000 gift for future updates.

Falcon Club Soars The Falcon Club, Pfeiffer University’s longstanding booster organization that supports scholarships for student-athletes and funds special projects specific to the department of athletics and all men’s and women’s sports, has grown since last November by more than 200 percent—with members that number more than 100 — and more joining every month. The first priority for the Falcon Club is scholarship support for studentathletes, who benefit from the first $30,000 raised every year for that purpose. Gifts last year from 161 donors exceeded that amount and were used to purchase a new sound system for Merner Gym and new equipment for the weight room, among other projects. the doors to her home school in 1885, she set the course for what would become Pfeiffer University. Over the next half-century, the families of Ebenezer Mitchell, Henry and Annie Merner Pfeiffer, and Gustavus and Louise Foote Pfeiffer, among many other early supporters, would shape Miss Prudden’s humble beginnings into the comprehensive United Methodistrelated institution it is today. To honor their impact, The Founders Circle recognizes alumni, parents and friends of Pfeiffer who contribute between $5,000 and $9,999.

United Methodist Connection Stronger than Ever The bond between Pfeiffer University and its United Methodist foundation continued to grow in 2011-12 in many ways, particularly with the addition of Rev. Sherri E. Barnes, Christian educator and ordained United Methodist elder from the Western North Carolina United Methodist Conference, as associate director of university and church relations. Rev. Barnes, who also serves as associate pastor to The Village Church, Pfeiffer’s fully instituted United Methodist congregation in Misenheimer, is developing relationships and programming that deepen the ties between Pfeiffer and United Methodist congregations. These are designed to further student recruitment, enhance effectiveness of church leaders and generate support for programs that help Pfeiffer students develop into principled Christian leaders, whether they intend to pursue church-based careers or others.

Pfeiffer acknowledges and appreciates generous UMC-based support from a number of sources. These include the Annual Conference as well as local churches, districts and conference staff—for sustaining 46 endowed and several other scholarships and providing internship opportunities for students preparing for careers as ministers, missionaries or Christian educators. Additional support comes from the Western North Carolina United Methodist Women, which also holds its annual School of Christian Mission on Pfeiffer’s Misenheimer campus. For more information about the ways United Methodist organizations can partner with Pfeiffer, please contact Rev. Sherri Barnes, (704) 463-3073 or sherri.barnes@fsmail.pfeiffer.edu.

Pfeiffer Alumni from Advancement Staff Uniquely Qualified to Serve Like every Pfeiffer alum, you know what your Pfeiffer experience means to you. When you meet another Pfeiffer grad—at work or in your community—it’s easy to “cut to the chase” when you discover through conversation your common bond. That’s how it is with several members of Pfeiffer’s Advancement staff. Because you share cheering for the Falcons in Merner Gym, touching the sundial for good luck, being awakened by the train that runs through campus and hearing the noon chimes from the Chapel, you make an immediate connection.

Our Advancement Staff is always available to talk about the Pfeiffer traditions that mean the most to you—and provide you with information that allows you to decide from among the many ways your support will uphold what is important to you for today’s students. Please contact any of them to answer questions you have about the many ways to support your alma mater.
