I have always thought that it is best not to take too much credit for reducing crime because you never know what is around the corner and any blame for an increase will find a home at your door; treat the peaks and troughs with the same degree of suspicion. So, all I will do is give you a few figures and let you make your own mind up about whether we are doing a good job for you or not. Crime is down 22% Tim Waterhouse from 1st April 2012 Cheltenham South LPT. Inspector compared to last years period which means we have had 750 less victims in the first 8 months of this year. We are detecting 36% of all crimes, which means that for most offences where we have some clues we do a pretty good job of getting some kind of justice, whatever that looks like. The problem always comes with the reported offences where we don’t have clues, such as the insecure car entered at three in the morning with its satnav stolen. They call it acquisitive crime, and this is why I keep banging on about locking your property. You would be amazed at how much time these thieves spend wandering around in the middle of the night looking for an opportunity; we know as we watch them occasionally and their chaotic meanderings. This is why we have spent so much time on targeting the individuals themselves as this seems to be more effective than just chasing the offence and trying to detect it after the event; being proactive and less reactive. It is working at the moment, but we do know that it only takes the release of 2 or 3 key individuals from prison for an increase in crime. We will have a new Police and Crime Commissioner in place by the time you read this. Fingers crossed that they will have the same view as myself that neighbourhood policing in all its many guises is something we should keep and nurture as it clearly works if staffed by people who care and want to make a difference.
