Merry Christmas! to all our customers – past, present and future On the cover this month we picture Santa with two of his helpers – his head Elf and Blitzen the reindeer. While all three are happy to join in the Christmas fun, they spend the rest of the year bringing cheer to our Advertisers as part of The Local Answer Sales Team. Santa – alias John Barker – looks after many customers in the Gloucester area and is always keen to bring joy to others. Born in the city, and educated at The King’s School, John is a big rugby fan – currently playing for Hucclecote RFC. Aimie George is dressed up as Blitzen for our cover image, and she helps companies to promote their goods, services and events in the Cheltenham area. A Cheltonian through and through, Aimie went to Bournside School and has continued to live in the Hatherley area ever since. Our ‘senior’ Elf – Malcolm Cantwell – has lived in Gloucestershire all his life, and has 40 years’ experience in the county’s publishing industry. Malcolm uses his knowledge to assist clients in both Cheltenham and Gloucester with their marketing campaigns. If you would like to find out more about how advertising in The Local Answer can help your business grow in 2013, why not give Aimie, John or Malcolm a call. They would be delighted to discuss your requirements with you, and you can rest assured there will not be a ‘hard sell’ practice employed by any one of them – they will simply provide you with all the information and advice you need to make up your own mind.

STAINED GLASS WINDOW BISCUITS

Delicious Dishes

1 Preheat oven to 180C, fan 160C, gas 4. Line 2 baking trays with baking parchment. 2 Using an electric hand mixer, beat the butter and sugar together in a large bowl until pale and fluffy. Beat in the egg and add the vanilla extract. 3 Fold in the flour and stir until combined. You may need to add a little extra if it is too sticky, but don’t over mix. 4 Halve the dough and roll into 2 flat discs. Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 1 hour.

Makes approx 30. Something for the children to make to hang on the christmas tree or to give as a gift to friends or family.

Ingredients: 175g unsalted butter, softened 200g caster sugar 1 medium egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 400g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 1x 250g bag of clear fruits (boiled sweets) coloured ribbon, for hanging biscuits on tree

5 On a surface dusted with flour, roll out the pastry to a thickness of 0.5cm. Using a 10cm star-shaped cutter, cut out stars and place on the baking trays. 6 Stamp out a small hole in the middle of each star, the same size as the boiled sweets. Place one sweet into each hole. Using a skewer, make a small hole in the top of each star (to hang on the christmas tree later). Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until turning golden. Cool on a wire rack. 7 If hanging your biscuits, thread some ribbon through the hole in each biscuit and tie a knot in the end. Keep in an airtight container until needed.

Passionate about High Quality Affordable Care Deanwood Lodge is a specialist nursing and dementia care home newly opened this spring. In just a few months the lodge already has 27 permanent residents. Suzanne, the Registered Manager, proudly showed us their beautiful home. Being a qualified nurse with over 12 years’ management experience has stood her in good stead, alongside the dedicated 30-strong team of trained staff, to provide the best possible care for your loved one. Deanwood Lodge has 47 single rooms, the majority with ensuite and wet room facilities. Some interconnecting rooms are available for couples. Respite care also provides affordable help for those needing a well earned break. Striving to provide a safe, homely environment, Deanwood Lodge has a modern contemporary feel with high-low nursing beds in each room, and residents are encouraged to bring some personal possessions to make it a ‘home from home’. The decor has been designed closely with the Alzheimers Society with dementia patients in mind. Each room has been decorated and refurbished to the highest standards – toning the decor to be beneficial to dementia patients. Food is of the highest standard, focusing on more traditional meals such as roasts and fish dishes, but a choice is always available and everything is cooked freshly by Deanwood’s trained chefs in the superb kitchen facilities which have been awarded a ‘5 star’ rating by Tewkesbury Borough Council. Residents are encouraged to participate in the daily activities run by Co-ordinator Vicki who organises an array of pastimes from flower arranging, music to baking.

Visitors are invited to join residents for a coffee and mince pie over Christmas and Suzanne will be pleased to show you around the home

Leader’s Life

with Councillor Paul James Leader of Gloucester City Council

As we head into December, Christmas becomes more of a reality. Our lights have now been switched on and on 6th December, our main Christmas Tree – the Rotary Clubʼs Tree of Light – will be officially lit. The ceremony, to be performed by Olympic dressage double gold medallist Charlotte Dujardin from Newent and Gloucesterʼs own singing star Mary-Jess Leaverland, will take place on 6th December at 6pm outside the Guildhall in Eastgate Street. The same evening we will be holding our second Night Market – a repeat of our successful event in the Summer. This time we will be extending it from Kings Square into the Gate Streets to accommodate all of the stallholders. On 15th December, Gloucester Cathedral will host “Carols on the Hour” every hour from 11am til 4pm, with the Cathedral Choir singing carols for 30 minutes in this wonderful setting. Admission is free. There is also a Christmas market in the Cloisters, selling unique and seasonal gifts. The Cathedral should, in my view, play a big role in our cityʼs Christmas celebrations. The Lantern Procession for the Christmas lights switch-on finished with an informal service at the Cathedral and, for me, nothing is more magical than the Christmas Eve

Page 10

at the service with Cathedral literally hundreds of people attending. other That spiritual home of Gloucester, the Kingsholm Rugby Stadium, will be hosting two games in the run-up to Christmas – London on 15th Irish December and Exeter Chiefs on the 22nd. A couple of back-to-back home victories would certainly help to put me in the festive mood. Christmas is a time when we all generate more waste. So can I please remind you whenever possible to reduce, reuse or recycle. We hope to minimise any disruption to the collection cycle over the festive period – and we certainly wonʼt be going back to the days of a long break between Christmas and the New Year. For the latest information about our Christmas refuse and recycling arrangements visit the council website at www.gloucester.gov.uk. On behalf of the City Council, I wish you and your family a very happy and peaceful Christmas and everything you hope for in 2013.

‘Tis the season to be jolly’ etc. etc, and hopefully it will be a lovely crisp bright month with plenty of sun. There is even time to do some planting still before the coldest weather of the season arrives in January/February, so if it’s suitable and not too waterlogged or frozen, container grown deciduous trees and shrubs can still be planted. Now, Christmas trees. I’m sorry but it has to be a real tree as far as I am concerned – the drop resistant ones are lovely, although quite pricey but probably worth it if you don’t want to be picking needles out of the shagpile till Easter! However whatever tree you buy if it has a cut end it will need watering every day. Saw off the bottom few inches when you get it home as you would with cut flowers and put the base in a container of water and top up regularly. Plant of the month has to be holly or to give it its proper name Ilex. The variegated variety grown as a standard (like a pom-pom) will be full of berries and looks so lovely flagging a nice front door. Now for some ideas for Christmas prezzies for the lovely gardener in your life or even to buy yourself (go on, you deserve it - you’ve been tending that garden all year!) Things that I would like in my stocking, right firstly Sarah Raven does brilliant plant labels which are black and the pack of 10 with a white pen comes in at £7.50 a pack. Next I use the cheapest gloves for gardening and the ones I like are Showa 310 gloves which are sold for builders etc. Look at the webpage www.bexpress.co.uk/showagloves. They are great value at only just over £2 a pair so to make the postage and packing worthwhile you need to buy several pairs at a time. Now for something expensive and lovely how about a personalised solid oak bench £355 from www.notonthehighstreet.com? Of course if you really want to show how much you love your other half why not buy them a garden replanting design, or makeover? This could ensure that your garden is easy maintenance in the future (and thus cut down on your workload – think about it!), see my website for details. Right, plug over with – just to say I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in the garden!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year

guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’

Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and 3DXO LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW KLV approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense.

I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Money Matters

Real time information with Roger Downes

In April 2013 we will witness the biggest change to the Pay As You Earn system since its inception just after the second world war. Itʼs called Real Time Information (RTI for short) and will require all employers to inform HMRC before or at the same time as any wage payment is made. All sound simple to you? Not in business and therefore nothing to do with you? Wrong on both counts. We are told that the system has been designed as part of the Governmentʼs crackdown on benefit cheats. Of course if it helps to achieve that, we are all in favour. Quite whether and how HM Revenue and Customs will be able to use all the data to good effect is yet to be proved. For employers it will mean changing business disciplines to ensure that they have the relevant information available, that their software will cope and that their employees are aware of the data that is being submitted about them. Will those changes to business disciplines affect you as an employee? There may be alterations to pay frequency (especially if you are paid weekly), to the way in which you are paid or an increase in questions from the authorities, especially if the information flow within HMRC is not 100% fluent. I suspect a lot more will be written about RTI in the coming months. Roger Downes FCA is a director of Andorran

Gloucestershire Constabulary People First Policing

Spare a thought for the less fortunate Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas and great New Year. As this year draws to an end I thought I would take the opportunity to give you a summary of the last twelve months. It has been a challenging period for your local police Neil Smith with numerous national Gloucester Inspector commitments that we have supported. We have made many changes in how we deliver our services to you and had be “smarter” in how we carry out our daily business, mainly driven by the requirement to save millions of pounds. I believe my team have carried out stunning work, they have worked tirelessly to ensure that you are all safe and have arrested hundreds of offenders driving crime rates down month on month. Yes we still have concerns over some crime areas but we are tackling these each day, the criminals who reside within our communities should be fearful as my team will continue to target them actively. Over the festive period please spare a thought for some of the less fortunate who live in our communities. Every year around this time we have an increase of vulnerable people. There are many causes for this but if you can help in any way please do. If you have elderly neighbours please check on them, if you see homeless people on our streets asking for money please consider buying them a hot drink instead of giving them cash. Every little thing that you can do will, I promise, make a huge difference to the lives of these individuals. Finally please spare a thought for my team of officers - we all have families and most of us are working over the entire festive period. I am working with my colleagues on New Year’s Eve so, if any of you are out and about in our great city, say hello to the police officers that are patrolling your streets. We are all there to keep you safe and to ensure that you have a great time. Wishing you and your families a Happy Christmas and peaceful New year, look forward to speaking to you all again in 2013 :-)
