Excellent in every way The Indian Voojan in Rotunda Terrace, Montpellier Street, was the setting for our latest review. I had never been before and was quite taken aback at how large the restaurant was. They can cater for 100 people in the main restaurant and have a private dining room upstairs catering for up to 25. The room goes a long way back, with lots of lovely paintings, subtle lighting, tall backed really comfy leather seats and nicely laid up tables. We were greeted and looked after throughout the evening by DaDa (pictured above right with Burhan), but all the staff were extremely pleasant and attentive to every customer. We ate early, but by 8pm the restaurant was buzzing with tables of 12, 8 and lots of couples. As well as having familiar dishes, the menu also incorporated some very different ones, so we opted to try things we hadn’t had before. I had Chicken Pakoras, which were deep fried and served with a tamarind and chilli sauce, they were really different, crispy

bread to share and Dada recommended trying Bindy Bhajee – gently spiced okra/‘ladies fingers’. We couldn’t fault the meal at all, and were glad we had been brave enough to avoid ordering a familiar dish just to be safe! Not that we really needed a dessert after the very generous portions, but I just fancied a mango ice-cream to clean the palette – my excuse, but it really was rather refreshing.

My husband had the mixed platter of onion bhaji which was huge and very light, chicken tikka, moist and tender, sheek kebab and the best vegetable samosa I have tasted, crisp and spicy. A good start then! We actually both chose the same main course but changed one of them so we could try two different ones. I had Himalayan Lamb, cooked in South Indian spices with tomato, onion and mushrooms in a thick sauce, and my husband had Methi Tikka Bhuna – baked chicken cooked with methi leaves, capsicum, tomato, herbs and spices. We added a portion of mushroon fried rice, a naan

Method 1 In a large saucepan heat oil over medium-low heat. Add garlic and stir for 1 minute. Add onion and carrot and cook until onion is tender - about 5 minutes. 2 Add peppers and cook until they begin to soften. 3 Add stock and tomatoes and bring to the boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Add mixed herbs and seasoning to your liking. 4 Leave to cool to room temperature then puree in small batches or use a hand blender in the saucepan. Reheat to serve.

Cheltenham once boasted seven railway stations

The Great Western Railway Company operated Malvern Road station (closed 1966) with the halt at Cheltenham Racecourse. There were also halts at Charlton Kings and Leckhampton and a spur right through to the centre of the town at St JamesĘź Square. London Midland & Scottish had Lansdown Road (now Cheltenham Spa), the Lower High Street passenger and goods station, and a spur to the Alstone coal wharf. The site of Malvern Road is now covered by the Travis Perkins complex (previous Sharpe & Fisher), and St JamesĘźs by Waitrose Supermarket. Leckhampton Station site now houses factory units and a block of flats. The High Street halt is still evident by the bridge that passes overhead near the junction with Gloucester Road. Both of these became targets of the Luftwaffe during World War II â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Pilley bridge over Old Bath Road suffered a direct hit and was not rebuilt until 1955. High Street station was narrowly missed bombs falling into nearby Stoneville Street, killing ten people and causing massive damage. Near to Dowdeswell reservoir on the A40, the Great Western line ran over the fantastic railway viaduct â&#x20AC;&#x201C; over a dozen arches, which was demolished by explosives in 1967. Between 1901 and 1930 the Cheltenham & District Light Railway also operated, running tramway services from the town centre to St Marks, Leckhampton, Charlton Kings and Cleeve Hill. Cheltenham still has two stations â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Cheltenham Spa (the old Lansdown Road) and the Racecourse which is now part of Gloucester Warwickshire Railway â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The Honeybourne Line (a genuine â&#x20AC;&#x153;steam railwayâ&#x20AC;?) which runs through Gotherington, Winchcombe and on to Toddington.

THE ROBINS WELCOME TIM RUSSON There have been plenty of new arrivals at the Abbey Business Stadium over the last few months with Robins Manager Mark Yates busy adding new faces to the team that took 10,000 supporters down the road to Wembley in May. However, perhaps the shrewdest new addition to the club this summer is the arrival of experienced media man, Tim Russon to the Cheltenham Town board of directors last month. What got you involved with Cheltenham Town originally? “It was the magic of the FA Cup that took me to Cheltenham in the eighties. John Murphy was manager and the club were preparing for a first round tie against Wolves who were then top of the old fourth division. I was working for ITV Central Sport and the focus was on the Robins as the non leaguers. I've been lucky in my life as a journalist to walk and talk with some of the greats and report on World Cups, Wembley Finals, League Championship glory and nights in Europe to remember with the likes of Aston Villa but one of the games that come to me time and time again is when Cheltenham beat Yeovil at Whaddon Road to seal promotion to the Football League.” So how does it feel to join the Board and what responsibilities does it bring? “Exciting and thrilling. I don’t have any apple trees in my garden, but I have been toying with the idea of creating some ‘stepovers’. The stepover apple (horizontal cordon) is a way of training apple trees so that they don’t get higher than about 50cm, by training them sideways. It is best suited for spur-fruiting apple trees, and as the name suggests the tree is so small that it can be ‘stepped over’ to reach the area beyond; ideal for today’s tiny gardens, for edging a path etc. The training has to be carried out on very young trees. Choose a maiden whip (a one-year-old tree) that is supple and can be bent over. Make sure that the selected cultivar is grafted onto a M27 rootstock. (A good fruit tree nursery would supply the necessary maiden whip apple). When selecting a cultivar, bear in mind that most apples are not self-pollinating and you may need to plant two different cultivars unless a suitable pollination tree is growing near by. Prepare a support using robust posts, at least 60cm high, spacing them 1.5-2m apart. Fix to the posts a tightly-stretched horizontal wire suspended 45cm from the ground. In winter plant your maiden whip next to the post and tie the tree to it – allow 1.52m between trees. In spring carefully start to bend the tree towards the horizontal wire tying it in a few places to distribute the pressure evenly. It might take a whole summer to bend. Any side branches that form in summer should be shortened to 3 leaves. Don’t prune the leader (the main stem) until it reaches the desired length then prune just above a bud. Plant of the month is Salvia involucrata which is a tall, perennial with heart-shaped, long-stalked leaves. It has spikes of lipstick-like flowers in brilliant magenta which sing out in the autumn garden. It is reasonably hardy in the shelter of a south or west facing wall in well-drained soil. You can also take cuttings in summer just to be on the safe side! Experiencing tenant arrears? Due to the current economic climate the percentage of landlords experiencing tenancy arrears is rising quite dramatically. If you are a landlord with tenant arrears it is imperative that you act sooner rather than later, in order to minimise the accumulation of arrears. Communication with your tenant is important, as you need to establish why the tenant is falling into arrears. Have they lost their job? Have they been unable to work due to sickness? Or are they generally living beyond their means. Once you have established the reason for the arrears it may be possible for you to put a payment plan in place in order that the arrears are paid off over an agreed period of time. The tenants may well be entitled to additional financial help in the form of benefits if they are struggling financially due to loss of employment or ill health. If the tenants are good tenants who are looking after your property well, and are likely to remain in the property long term, it may be an option to reduce the rent in order to ease their situation. Once a tenant is two months in arrears the Landlord can serve a section 8 notice for repossession of the property. This should be deemed as a last resort, as it is far better to work with the tenant to try and resolve the issues. It is important for landlords when they are recruiting new tenants to ensure they carry out the appropriate employment and credit checks to ensure that the tenants are in a financial position to meet their commitment.

Last month the Government announced a series of measures that it says will benefit the construction industry as part of stimulating the economy. But will they work or is it more rhetoric from a Government that has no idea on how to get growth going again? My contacts in the construction industry welcome the news, but they are all sceptical as to whether the measures will work or even whether they address the correct issues. What they do tell me is that the construction sector is the barometer for business success – it is generally the first sector to feel the pinch when recession comes our way, but it is often the first to come out of the slump. At the moment the word is that there are no signs that this is happening, so any help that the Government can give in this area is bound to be welcome. Relaxation of the planning rules for building of small extensions and conversions, a reduction in the amount of affordable housing that has to be provided as part of a development and state-backed guarantees to encourage building to happen are all positive packages. They wonʼt be universally popular, with some people fearing that they are a free for all for uncontrolled building, but something has to be done and these seem to me to be sensible measures for both the construction industry and the homeowners who donʼt want – or canʼt afford – to move house. The Government has also announced measures to improve the chances of first time buyers being able to afford to get onto the housing ladder. The only thing that we can’t really anticipate are students drinking too much and the consequences of that on the town and the campus neighbours. However, with the ‘uni’ bus, the extra policing patrols, the student marshals and the cooperation from the various drinking establishments around the town, hopefully it will be trouble free. We will see. The darker nights are another matter all together. Historically the weeks following the clocks going back are very busy for us. Thieves and burglars see the darker nights and time before decent hard working people get home as a window of opportunity to burgle and steal. These people do not have jobs and live off the naivety and absentmindedness of people in our communities who don’t have as good security as their neighbours. It is vitally important that prior to the darker nights everyone has a quick think about their homes security. We must make it difficult for thieves; do not make it easy for them. By having a secure home a thief will think twice and if the thief still makes the effort to break in at least they will make a noise or potentially leave some forensics behind. This will give your local police the chance to catch them. We will be targeting known thieves, following them, checking on them and making sure we know what they are about. We will be having as many patrols as possible out and about in targeted areas at the hotspot times. We will be doing our bit, and together we can build on the successful last 6 months.
