P Piña iña Colada Colada A sweet , rum-based cocktail made with rum, cream of coconut and pineapple juice, the Piña Colada’s origin is contested by three Puerto Rican bartenders. Ramón ‘Monchito’ Marrero Pérez claims to have first made the cocktail at the Caribe Hilton Hotel’s Beachcomber Bar in San Juan in August 1952, using the newly-available Coco López cream of coconut. Coco López was developed in Puerto Rico in 1948 by Don Ramón López-Irizarry, hence the Puerto Rican connection and the 1952 account of the drink’s creation. Some say the drink did not acquire its name until the 1960s. Ricardo García, who also worked at the Caribe, says that it was he who invented the drink , while Ramón Portas Mingot says he created it in 1963 at the Barrachina Restaurant. The restaurant stands by his claim to this day. National Piña Colada Day is celebrated on the islands on 10th July. Ingredients: Ingredients: Ice; 35ml white rum; 1 tbsp coconut-flavoured rum; 50ml coconut cream; 50ml pineapple juice; 3-4 pineapple chunks; pineapple slice and maraschino cherry to garnish. Method: Method: 1 Pour the two rums, coconut cream, pineapple juice and chunks of pineapple into a blender and blend until smooth. 2 To serve, pour into a cocktail glass and garnish with a pineapple slice and a maraschino cherry.

Warming W arming W Winter inter V Venison enison There There aare re nnoo short-cuts short-cuts w with ith tthis his ttasty asty ddish ish – tthe he llong, ong, sslow low ccooking ooking pprocess rocess eensures nsures you you are are met met with with truly truly succulent succulent venison venison Serves Serves 2 2-3 -3 Ingredients: Ingredients: 2 carrots; 140g swede; 2 onions; 3 sticks of celery; 1 tbsp olive oil; 20g butter; 1 clove of garlic, crushed; 1kg boned leg or shoulder of venison, cut into large chunks (or buy ready-cut venison for stewing); 5 tbsp plain flour, seasoned with salt and pepper; 2 tbsp redcurrant jelly; 450ml dry red wine; 450ml beef stock; 2 sprigs of thyme; 1 bay leaf. Method: Method: 1 Heat your oven to 180°C (fan 160°C/gas mark 4). Roughly chop the carrots, swede, onions and celery, then fry the vegetables in half the oil and butter in a heavybased casserole dish for 4-5 minutes until golden. Add the garlic and fry for a further minute, then put aside. 2 Put the venison into a sealable plastic bag with the
seasoned flour and shake to coat. Add the remaining oil and butter to the casserole dish, then fry the venison on a high heat, stirring periodically until well browned. Don’t put too much meat in the dish at once – cook in batches if you don’t have a big casserole dish. Set aside with the vegetables. 3 Add the redcurrant jelly and wine to the dish and bring to the boil, making sure you scrape up all the bits from the meat and vegetables that have stuck to the bottom. Pour in the stock , then add the thyme, bay leaf, venison and vegetables. Season to your taste and bring to the boil. Put the lid on the dish and move it to the oven for about 2 hours or until tender. Remove from the oven and check the seasoning. 4 Serve with a generous helping of fresh, crusty bread.

N New ew YYear’s ear’s rresolutions esolutions ffor or pet pet oowners wners New Year ’s resolutions are an opportunity to set new goals or ambitions for the upcoming year. Normally that means giving up something like chocolate or alcohol, or taking on a fitness challenge. Why not make some pet-focussed resolutions instead this year? Here are some suggestions for resolutions that will keep Fido and Felix happy: Exercise: Exercise: Dogs and cats need both physical and mental stimulation. Take your dog on a new walk or to a different area – new smells and locations are a great excitement compared to the same old trudge around the local park . Cats love activities too. Catnip toys, crinkly balls, and even cardboard boxes are great entertainment. Interact with your cat more – don’t just live in the same space together! FFeeding: eeding: Are you feeding the best cat or dog food? Are you measuring out the correct amount or just ad-libbing it? Is it time to move on to a senior food, or one with some extra joint or skin supplements? Why not upgrade your best friend’s diet? If you appreciate your own nutrition, make sure you aren’t short-changing your pets! Treats: Don’t forget all those ‘dreamies’ and ‘markies’ Treats: have extra calories. If weight is an issue for your pet, try cutting back or looking for healthier options. Health: Have you been ignoring that skin lump or fetid Health: dog breath? Is old age starting to catch up with the furry one? Don’t be afraid to seek some veterinary advice. Book in a health check if required, make sure vaccinations are up to date, and stay on top of the basics like flea and worm control. Microchips: It is now law that all dogs should be Microchips: microchipped. It’s cheap and takes seconds to get done, plus it gives you peace of mind that your pet is i d e n t i f i e d s h o u l d s o m e t h i n g h a p p e n . I f yo u r p e t i s already microchipped, make sure your details are up to date! There’s no point in having your pet microchipped if all the details are wrong! Don’t feel limited by my suggestions. Use your imagination and think of all the joy your pet gives you. Why not go on a dog-friendly holiday this year? Splash out on that new dog or cat bed. Maybe it’s time you both took up running again or committed to some regular ‘play-time’ with Felix , not just the occasional ‘feed and fuss’. Whether it ’s building muscle, losing a few pounds of fat, or achieving a personal best in a chosen sport, a lot of us will set goals. But how many of us actually achieve them, or even get close? It ’s no secret that life is full of distractions and interruptions, but there are some easy ways in which to give yourself the best chance of achieving your goals and finally sticking to your New Year’s Resolution.

You can cheer each other on and pick each other up if either of you are struggling. A little bit of healthy competition can be good in pushing you beyond your goals as well.

If you lack energy or simply don’t want to work out, don’t worry. Pick yourself up the next day and start again – one missed workout or a ‘bad’ meal isn’t going to ruin all your hard work! At the end of the day, your physical and mental health is more important than losing half an inch off your waist. So, will you be sticking to your New Year’s Resolution in 2017? I hope so!

Most of us make New Year ’s resolutions and – let ’s be honest – generally break them within the first month. More frequent exercise is often top of the list. Being an optimist, I hope you are keeping your exercise resolution going, so let ’s address gym wear and the best way to care for it.

Designer gym wear can run into t h e h u n d re d s – e s p e c i a l l y w h e n y o u consider designer trainers and specialist footwear that covers all sports. We are spoilt for choice and I’m
sure most us have some gym wear in o u r h o m e s . O f t e n w e p u rc h a s e t h e s e i te m s, b u t n eve r t h i n k o f h ow to m a i n t a i n t h e m a n d g e t t h e b e s t f ro m our treasured and often costly purchases. Cycling is becoming ever more popular, not just for exercise but as a means of transportation. This naturally means the cyclist can arrive at his or her destination hot and sweaty. None of us want our colleagues to raise their eyebrows when we walk past leaving a “ w h i f f y ” r e m i n d e r o f o u r s e l ve s . Fortunately, the market has responded with new ranges of gym wear specifically made to help in eliminating odours, and with a correct washing program this can be achieved. Interestingly fresh sweat does not smell, but micrococcus breaks down your sweat’s fatty acids and that is the process that causes an unpleasant odour! Synthetics tend to smell straight away, whereas wool is naturally more odour resistant.

Turn your gym wear inside out, as the odour tends to stick to the inside. If possible, soak in cold water with half a cup of white vinegar for 15 to 3 0 m i n u te s to h e l p e l i m i n a te a n y odours. Wash with only a small amount of detergent on a cold water wash, and if you’re able, add another half cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. Try to dry clothes on a low heat setting. Leave out any softeners, as they tend to deliver moisture that may leave a coating on your clothes, which is the last thing you want. Check all washing i n s t r u c t i o n s o n g a r m e n t s . T h e re a re many new detergents readily available now to address this issue, so let’s start 2017 smelling as fresh as a daisy.

very good look for the majority, in my opinion. This look seems to be gaining a momentum all of its own, with jackets slashed to the waist , exposing what was once considered a no-no! Of course, there are times when a ‘little’ cleavage suits an outfit – but ‘little’ being the operative word. Extremes in fashion never last for long, but any pictures taken last a lifetime – worth remembering. A n o t h e r n ew t re n d t h a t w e c a n a l l c a r r y of f i s t u c k i n g a s m a l l s e c t i o n of your top – whether a blouse or jumper – i n t o t h e t o p o f y o u r t ro u s e r s , s k i r t s o r leggings. This can break up your look and be rather attractive if done well – especially if you have a nice belt or waistband to show off. Many of you will have been fielding tricky questions from the kids about what they see on the news or hear in the playground, and I wanted to look at ways in which we can support our children of all ages when the outside world goes a little bit crazy.

Seeing the wider world in turmoil i s a n o p p o r t u n i t y t o re s t a te t h e family values you are trying to instil into them – kindness, tolerance, patience and acceptance, as well as

resilience, confidence and self-belief. When they talk about the mean things people say, we have the chance to gather them close and encourage using k i n d w o rd s a n d s e e i n g beyond the labels.

And it is true – even in moments o f te r r i b l e c r i s i s t h e re a re people looking to help and be ‘earth angels’ by supporting victims, offering aid or simply raising funds for charities. Encourage c h i l d r e n to t a k e p a r t i n d o n a t i n g goods, fundraising or simply doing one good deed a day. I truly believe that testing times – whether health issues, financial challenges or political upheaval – h av e s o m e t h i n g o f value to offer us, and if we c a n f i n d o u r ow n inner joy, within our families, relationships a n d f r i e n d s h i p s, a n d i f we can embrace gratitude for all that we do have, and bring the ‘attitude of gratitude’ into daily life, we will f i n d o u r s e l ve s a w h o l e l ot healthier and happier. But how? My m a g i c s u g g e s t i o n for 2017 is the ‘Release’ and ‘Dream’ bowls. Take two bowls or pots, and whenever you feel bad about anything, write it on a scrap of paper and
throw it into the ‘Release’ pot. Then, when you feel the need, safely burn the contents (outside and with care please!) knowing all those grumbles and mumbles are gone and cleared away – it really works!

You can get the kids to make a papier-mâché pot and decorate it , s t i c k o n p i c t u re s o f t h i n g s y o u a l l love, make it bright and sparkly and a thing of combined joy within the family. Motorsport programmes are not only the promotional face of a manufacturer, but they are also an experimental platform to develop new technology for road cars. Audi have confirmed that they will be withdrawing in 2017 from the World Endurance Championship. The knock-on effect will be that, in 2017, there will not be a formal works team competing at the legendary 24 hours of Le Mans – a race Audi has won 13 times. The manufacturer is ending 18 years of prototype racing to focus efforts on the FIA Formula E (electric) racing series. Volkswagen are re-considering their motorsport programmes, as the m o v e t o e l e c t r i c p ow e r i s a k ey strategy for their road cars. There h av e b e e n r u m o u r s t h a t t h e Volkswagen Group may have up to 25 e l e c t r i c ro a d c a r s p l a n n e d i n t h e i r portfolio to offer customers by 2025.

Over the next year we will see a move towards petrol-electric hybrid and pure electric systems. So on that note, here are some suggestions for January...

The debate will start all over again as to whether it’s a good idea, but if the PM is true to her word, there will be no recount. As for a prediction, I think there’s too much at stake for us to r u s h i n t o a n y t h i n g a n d t h e r e f o r e we w i l l s t i l l b e discussing terms this time next year.

Moving Moving fforward orward iinto nto 22017 017 As we move into the New Year, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Inspector Roddy Gosden on his appointment as Inspector for the Cheltenham local policing area. Roddy has a wealth of experience that he will bring to the role. He was formerly the local Inspector for Whaddon a n d h a s s p e n t t i m e i n o f fe n d e r m a n a g e m e n t ro l e s i n Cheltenham, and most recently completed a secondment with Her Majesty ’s Inspectorate of Constabulary observing best practice in policing across the country.

Roddy and I recently discussed with your local Councillors our vision of neighbourhood policing in Cheltenham as we move forward into 2017. This includes establishing a problem solving team designed to identify issues that are causing the most harm to the community and then taking positive action to resolve them. The team will also manage all dwelling burglary investigations in order to identify crime patterns and more effectively target those committing the crimes. Further changes are planned within Gloucestershire Constabulary to improve the quality of our investigations. Crime Standards Sergeants have been introduced in all departments to provide investigative advice to officers, signpost them to agencies and departments that may be able to assist their enquiries, and to review cases prior to them being referred to the Crown Prosecution Service. The individual that has been appointed to this role in Cheltenham is a very experienced Detective Sergeant with a background in CID and major incident enquiries. She has already demonstrated a commitment to improving the service that we provide, and the feedback we have received from our officers has been positive. The ultimate aim of these changes is to increase the number of successful prosecutions we get at court.

Each year, after our Christmas ‘Op Switch’ campaign concludes, I always encourage my officers to continue offering the same crime prevention advice. Please don’t leave empty Christmas present boxes next to your bins! It simply advertises to criminals that your house contains new (and often expensive) goods and could make your house an attractive target for burglars. Your local PCSO will be happy to visit and complete a home security survey to help you keep your home safe. Simply contact us on 101, via our website or visit your local police station and we will make suitable arrangements for a PCSO to visit you.
