s guardians of the health and wellbeing of our pets, we want what’s best for them in terms of good food and medical care; play, acceptance and compassion by others.

And, in this age of isolation, we want what’s good for ourselves as well – especially our health and immunity, given the current situation with Covid-19.

Here’s where our pets come in. It appears that they are giving us far more than just companionship. Yes, the health and wellness of our pets contribute back in equal measures, to our health and wellness too.

It’s more than just psychological benefits: Reports show that animals lower the risk of developing allergic diseases, and exposure to pets may influence specific aspects of the immune system. One showed that after petting a dog, people had a significant increase in levels of an immune antibody called IgA, a key player in our immune defence.

Automated Storage & Retrieval System

Consoveyo has been working with Pet Lovers Centre to install an intralogistics system for the major pet supplies retailer in Singapore to allow them to double their pallet storage density, and an aim to reduce reliance on manual labour.

The customised system will shorten the time taken to store pallets onto racks as well as retrieving products from the warehouse. This will allow Pet Lovers Centre to redeploy staff to manage tasks more efficiently.

The Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) will be the first in the industry and region. Being the largest and only pet care retail chain in South East Asia, Pet Lovers Centre embarked on this journey to increase overall manpower efficiency and warehouse storage space. Seen as a positive move forward, this customised system will drive efficiencies and achieve real-time productivity while providing real-time visibility across warehousing operations.

Senior Logistics Manager of Pet Lovers Centre, Thiah Eng Yew said: “Currently, our warehouse operators are using rider reach trucks to store

pallets in the warehouse, and this process is very time-consuming. Furthermore, our products are prone to damage due to manual handling.”

He added: “Consoveyo’s proven and robust solutions are the right fit that will help shorten the time taken to store a pallet onto the rack in the warehouse, and also reduce the number of operators we will require.”

Consoveyo is installing a pallet conveying system, high bay racking and a multi-deep ASRS. This multi-deep storage system is supported by two stacker cranes equipped with on-board satellite vehicles, as well as their warehouse management software.

The software will give a seamless integration to Pet Lovers Centre’s host system to manage all incoming and outbound orders. All data collected will then be used to utilise and track movement.

Overall, this will provide the opportunity for Pet Lovers Centre to take a cost-savings approach in the long run.

Strategically sited along the 3rd Mile of Batu River on an arterial road leading to the northern city of Ipoh, the facility is over 120 sq m in size. Customers will enjoy its wide range of retail products for pets in the plush surroundings.

• Tropicana Gardens Mall Following The Pet Safari concept, the 557 sq m Toppen store, comes with its own ‘Back To School’ theme. The décor is authentically Malaysian complete with local-school inspirations like school desk, chalkboard, textbooks, children’s painting, sports equipment etc.

THAILAND • Central Mahachai

In March 2020, PLC’s latest store in Thailand opened at the Central Mahachai Shopping Plaza.

In an ‘East Meets West’ concept the shopping plaza here displays the cultural heritage of the Samut Sakhon district proudly.

The mall is located not far from the famous Mahachai seafood market, which is a major seat in Thailand’s fishing industry. As such, Central Mahachai took inspiration from the province’s seafood hub status and was built to look like a giant fishing boat.

PLC’s Central Mahachai offers a wide range of the retail products for pet owners to pamper their pets. There’s also a variety of pet services and home delivery services available here.

Currently, Thailand has a total of 10 stores (seven retail stores and three The Pet Safari stores). The latest store at Central Mahachai Shopping Plaza was opened in March 2020.

A Uniquely Singapore Dog Treat

SINGAPORE: From Hainanese Chicken Rice to Chicken Coin Bak Kwa and Kong Ba Bao, every die-hard Singaporean can identify with these flavours. Now, for the first time, they are available for our four-legged fur-kids too!

“Burp!” a house brand, launched by Pet Lovers Centre (PLC) in 1996, will be the flagship bearer for all these uniquely Singapore flavoured products. Burp will add a total of 10 of these newly created delights to its already well-established range of pet food. Under the Singapore Delights banner, there will be seven flavours to tantalise your pooch and a further three under its Healthier Choice range.

“Many local delights are like comfort food, it warms our soul,” said Ms Wu. “Hainanese chicken rice is one of my favourite dishes, and I’m sure, many of the locals could say the same. How cool is that, if there is a pet-friendly Hainanese chicken rice recipe?”

In addition, her aspiration to buy souvenirs for friends and family when travelling added impetus to the idea. Ms Wu, a Taiwanese, thought: “It would be a great choice as a souvenir or present too.”

Product Development

The premise is simple: Delicious local delights are in our everyday lives, so why can’t our fur-kids enjoy them too? With that in mind, Elfin Wu, the supplier management (product development) manager at PLC proposed the concept and pushed through the development of the product range.

And, in keeping with the Burp! ideals, the recipes are formulated without any of the bad stuff eg: artificial colouring, preservatives, corn or meat meal, and the range is made without pork/lard.

She added: “For example, the Dong Po Rou is made with chicken and lamb jerky instead of pork belly.

It’s leaner and healthier for dogs.”

Safety First

The development of PLC’s latest product took about a year to plan, execute and fulfil. Ms Wu said: “We choose our partners carefully. SPCA Launches Covid-19 Pet Food Support Programme

Purina: Making Pet Care Products Sustainably

SINGAPORE: Animal caregivers, including pet guardians and community cat and dog feeders, like the rest of us, are affected by the Covid-19 crisis too.

To help those in need at this time, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has rolled out a short-term pet food support programme. As part of the programme, Hill’s Science Diet will supply SPCA all dog and cat food at low cost, while Kohepets (an online pet food and supplies store), will deliver the food to the homes of participants.

The programme is expected to run for three to six months, but this will be reassessed if needed, based on the demand from the community.

The programme hopes to help at least 1,000 animals under the care of pet owners, community caregivers and individual rescuers who are struggling financially. Applicants will be screened and will be asked to provide details of the animal(s) under their care.

The SPCA has set aside an initial $50,000 for this programme and an online fundraising campaign has been launched to help provide

ST LOUIS, USA: Purina’s pet care products for dogs and cats is now getting to pet food bowls and litter boxes in a more sustainable way. The company announced in August that it reached its 2020 goal to achieve zero waste for disposal across all manufacturing operations and its corporate headquarters.

Achieving zero waste for disposal means that all 21 of Purina’s manufacturing sites and its headquarters have found ways to derive benefits from materials that would have otherwise been discarded. All locations now recycle, reuse, recover or compost waste from daily operations. Some of the materials are transformed into alternative cat litter, which uses recycled paperboard as a key ingredient.

According to the company, “Purina products feed 49 million dogs and 66 million cats every year, so reaching 100 percent across all Purina brands and factories was no small feat.”

Missouri, USA: While the world copes with our new normal amid the coronavirus pandemic, moreand-more people are turning to animal shelters and rescues to foster pets. For first time fosters, especially of kittens and cats, the experience can be as overwhelming as it is rewarding.

Royal Canin has come to their aid with the launch of Catology – an educational series for first-time kitten fosters and adopters in April this year. Featuring kitten expert and Internet personality Hannah Shaw, The Kitten Lady, the online series covers kitten topics – caring for neonates, feeding and nutrition, kitten behavior and socialising, among others.

EU Citizens Want Plan to Phase Out Animal Testing In Europe Brussels, Belgium: Almost three quarters (72 percent) of EU citizens think Europe should set targets and deadlines to phase out animal testing, according to a poll by Cruelty Free Europe.

The poll, done in June this year, showed that 70 percent of adults across 12 EU member states agree that replacing animal tests with alternative methods should be an EU priority. Results indicated that: • 76 percent of adults in EU member states agree animal tests for household cleaning products should be banned in the EU. • 74 percent agree that animal tests for cosmetics and ingredients are unacceptable in all circumstances.

• 66 percent agree that the EU should immediately end all animal tests.

Cruelty Free Europe is network of animal protection groups working to bring animal testing to an end across Europe. Dr Katy Taylor, its Director of Science, says: “The results of our poll show the EU public is ready for animal tests to become a thing of the past. Now it’s up to leaders to listen and put in place a plan that will end cruel and unnecessary suffering of animals in European laboratories once and for all.”

The most recent EU report on use of animals for research reveals 30 million animal experiments took place in Europe between 2015 - 2017. A Commission report on the implementation of Directive 2010/63/EU on protection of animals used for scientific purposes shows 12.60 million animals were bred for testing in 2017.

New York, USA: The American Kennel Club (AKC), the world’s largest purebred dog registry announced that the Belgian Laekenois has received full recognition and brings the number of AKCrecognised breeds to 196.

As of 1 July 2020, the tousled wire-coated newcomer with shade variations from fawn to mahogany will be segue into AKC Herding Group in all-breed conformation competition.

“We’re happy to have the Belgian Laekenois as part of AKC’s family of recognised breeds,” said Gina DiNardo, AKC Executive Secretary. “It’s a wonderful dog that will make a great companion for active people.”

One of the four native dogs of Belgium, the Belgian Laekenois (pronounced lak-in-wah) is a herding dog that was originally used to guard and tend to its owner’s flock, as well as guard linen drying in the fields. The breed is still able to guard its people and property today.

While the Belgian Laekenois a virtual unknown, it has been under the AKC’s radar since 2011 under its Miscellaneous Class. Estimates show that there are less than 400 in the US, and about 1,000 Laekenois worldwide. (See Top Dog: Belgian Laekenois for more info)

Detection Of Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease

Singapore: The Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS), has confirmed the first detection of Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD) in local pet rabbits on 16 September.

RHD primarily affects rabbits and is a highly contagious, acute and fatal disease. However, it is not zoonotic and does not affect humans or other animal species.

According to the news release issued by National Parks Board (NParks), the virus that causes RHD was detected in samples from pet rabbits submitted by a veterinary clinic. So far some 11 rabbits have been affected, and eight have since succumbed to the disease.

Epidemiological investigations are ongoing, and AVS (a cluster of NParks), will also be working with veterinary clinics and distributors on importing and registering vaccines for RHD. While the risk of RHD is low for rabbits that are kept indoors or away from rabbits from other households, pet owners should: • Minimise contact between their pet rabbits with visitors and other rabbits.

It is a notifiable animal disease in Singapore and to World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). All suspect cases must be reported to AVS.

raditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a medical system dating from the 16th Century that uses the balance between the yin and yang to prevent maladies and heal diseases.

It takes into account the natural strengths and weaknesses of our bodies for a holistic approach to wellness.

Likewise, Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM), rooted in the same traditions, has been used to treat animals for about just as long. The veterinary practice focuses on the four branches of acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, Tui-na and food therapy to treat our feathered and furry companions, said Vet on Wheels’ Dr Jasmine Tan Kia Ming, BSc, BVMS, CVA.

Elements Of TCVM

Dr Tan tells us vets in Singapore have been practising TCVM for at least two decades, and it looks to pick up speed as more international courses become available. “I recommend pet owners to only look for certified TCVM

veterinarians,” she stressed. Treatments, even for the same species or breed, may differ.

Every animal has its own genetic makeup and disposition, and it takes a thorough understanding of your pet to make the right diagnosis.

“A good TCVM practitioner would require a detailed medical history of the pet, the environment it lives in, its diet, its interactions with other animals and people, its personal preferences, and others, to be able to administer the right treatment,” added Dr Tan. “Vets may prescribe different herbs or herbal formulas in disparate ways according to the diagnoses.”

Aside from going to a certified TCVM vet, another good way to assure yourself of quality care is by sourcing for your herbs through responsible and reputable sellers. TCVM vets are thoroughly schooled in the different Chinese herbs so they can prescribe medication that are safe for pet consumption.

They also monitor the pet after dispensing the medicines. “If a pet develops an adverse reaction

Pain-Free Pain Management

Vets in Singapore are generally open to TCVM as an alternative treatment - especially when all other medical options have been exhausted. Besides medication, TCVM also prescribes Tui-na and acupuncture therapies where sterilised needles are inserted into the body to stimulate meridien points.

Tui-na is a massage technique applied to meridians and acupoints to improve the flow of ‘qi’, and correct imbalances within the organs.

Acupuncture may look painful, but Dr Tan assures us it is very safe if it’s done by a certified veterinarian practitioner.

“TCVM has been practiced on animals in China for thousands of years,” she added. “Pet

owners are almost always pleasantly surprised when they see their pets do not mind the needles.”

While the different branches of TCVM can work independently, Dr Tan advised a more holistic approach. “Pet owners should understand that a combination of the four branches of treatment will increase the effectiveness of the TCVM programme,” she recommended.

Best Of East & West

TCVM is often seen only as an alternative treatment for neurological and orthopaedic medical conditions but that’s putting a cap on its efficacy, Dr Tan said. Western medicine works best to address acute problems but TCVM is an effective, holistic management of chronic conditions such as kidney disease, cancer, seizures of unknown origins, and more. It corrects the imbalances of the body to improve any medical condition or symptoms for an overall wellness programme.

Warming Food To battle ‘cooling’, try recipes that include lamb, venison, chicken, buckwheat, ginger and cinnamon. These warming foods help the digestive organs work better to prevent ‘dampness’ but should be given in small doses, especially if the animal is already ‘heaty’.

Natural Tonics Foods such as sweet potato, squash and pumpkin are general tonics that help the digestive tract. Sardines and liver (in small amounts) fortify blood and boost hair growth, among other benefits. Barley and mushroom are good bets against dampness while duck, broccoli and millet are effective against dryness.

he’s known as an international travel host, director and producer, recognised for her work as a host on Discovery Channel, TLC and MTV. With accolades a mile long, Denise Keller, 38, remains one of Singapore’s most sought-after event and TV media presenters.

First, it was Denise’s megawatt smile that brought her to the forefront of the world’s attention. After clinching Ford’s Supermodel of the World finals in 2000, the world was her veritable oyster. From a successful modelling career, she went on to hosting on MTV. Then this

powerhouse carried on to wow the world with her adventure series in TLC and the Discovery Channel travel shows.

Now, this veteran of the world’s stage brings her wealth of experience, wit and enthusiasm as an Ambassador, and ardent supporter of SOSD (formerly Save Our Street Dogs), a volunteer-run organisation dedicated to the welfare of our street dogs.

At home in Upper Bukit Timah, surrounded by a menagerie of animals, she is using her infectious energy to draw attention to the plight of the less fortunate dogs in Singapore.

Besides her love of animals, Denise is all about yoga. A practitioner of the regiment since 15, she’s gone to be a qualified Hatha Yoga instructor. Says Denise: “Yoga has remained the one constant thing in my life. It gave me focus and concentration during my TV days. Whenever I felt anxious before the camera rolled, I would find a quiet spot and do some breathing exercises.”

The Tipping Point

Yoga has done much for her and serves to recharge her. “I meditate every day as it helps me focus, and I do breathing exercises. It gets me through my day. I would highly recommend this to anyone who, like me, can’t sit still.”

Her love affair with yoga took off as she sought to “soothe my inner side, especially since the job was stressful”. Incidences during the Discovery Channel filming of Expedition X: Silk Road Rising

in 2016 took a toll on her, both physically and emotionally.

The adventure which took her along the fabled Silk Road from Istanbul to Xian, China, proved a life-altering experience for Denise. “We were shooting in winter and, with the rugged and rough terrain, accidents do happen.” The perilous route from China to Istanbul, Turkey, was not for the faint of heart.

“It was the tipping point in my career. I could feel the stress level rising steadily. I knew then; I wanted to create and manage my own content and find my own way forward. Yoga of course was part of this journey.”

During her decade of work with TLC and Discovery Channel, she credits yoga for keeping her centred through her career. It is through mindfulness, a form of meditative awareness in yoga, that she soon saw her world evolve.

She and hubby shares a love of travel, collecting antiques and old posters, and yes, cats! Neko, a spritely Bengal cat, is part of his collection.

and the cat stuck with her ever since then. A year later, Ayala, a Chinchilla Persian and companion cat for Anouk, came to live with them. “These two became my family. They slept and ate alongside me,” says Denise. Sadly, Ayala passed away last year from Cancer.

After her marriage to Robert in 2015 and move back to Singapore, “it was time to slow down and find a balance between work and my passion for wellness and animals,” she says. By then she had spent a wanderlust decade in front of the camera for TLC and Discovery Channel.

Hubby and her share a love of travel, collecting antiques and old posters, and yes, cats! His was a spritely Bengal cat named Neko. Besides the three cats in the house, there’s Ziggy, a stunning looking Dachshund. The dog was a case of “accidental adoption” when her sister brought in two puppies.

Making Tails Wag

Nicely settled down in a quiet neighbourhood doesn’t mean all’s quiet with Denise. During her walks around the area, the sight of animals being Denise attending to the 16-year-old Anouk with a Nebuliser in hand.

Family Members

More settled now and surrounded by an evergrowing brood of animals, she says: “They ground me, heal me and love me unconditionally. I would adopt more animals if I could, but I have been told that I can’t keep collecting animals like people collect stamps.”

Presently fostering two cats at home in Upper Bukit Timah, she has also, a standard Dachshund that goes by the name of Ziggy; a 16-year old short-haired Exotic Persian called Anouk, plus a very, very, lively eight-year-old Bengal cat.

Her adoption trail started in her early days while working for MTV. Feeling lonely and despondent, a very young Denise went looking for companionship in a pet shop. There she found Anouk, a scraggy kitty dumped by its owner, in front of a pet store. Describing herself as “more of a dog-person than a cat-person”, she says the cat had an “Ewok-squawk”, and the “odd fella seemed to be attached to my ankle!”

dumped in Bukit Timah Park made her “blood boil.” “People were dumping cats, and I want to do something about that,” she says. Her vet connected Denise with Dr Siew Tuck Wah, President of SOSD, and, “that’s when I started to take SOSD and the work they do seriously.”

Where once she offered her services as event host for the SOSD Charity Dinners, the doggedness of Covid-19 put paid to that; along with all other fundraising activity and adoption drives. The cancellation of the event did not dampen her enthusiasm; it only produced another channel to exert her creativity.

Denise, a fully qualified Hatha Yoga instructor in her own right, found that she could still contribute – in the virtual world. She’s offering her services for online yoga classes to raise the much-needed funds for SOSD. Yes, she’s bent on keeping those tails wagging happily.

As an ambassador for the organisation, she gets up and goes whenever an opportunity avails itself. With the year-end gift-giving season coming up, the message of “Mindfulness” seems most appropriate. “Animals are part of the family. Your pets will evolve and change through time. Think it through – before buying or even adopting a cat or a dog. Be mindful, they may be cute now, but it’s another thing when they grow old,” she says.

With her innate sense of style, her upbeat personality, and her zest for life, Denise with hubby, recently launched a content production house in Singapore called KellerMedia. The focus?

Besides travel, hospitality and lifestyle; wellness is there too.

While her adventures may carry her to distant places in the not too distant future, Denise plans to stay the course, stay centred on things that matter most to her: yoga and of course, animal welfare. p

T

eaching your dog to sit on command is one of the most important lessons your pooch will ever learn.

He needs to be able to sit kerbs to make road crossing safer. If he bolts off to chase the cat, other dogs, cars, children on bikes, the “sit” order will put a stop to that. Simply put, he is less likely to get into trouble with others when he can obey this straightforward command.

Whatever the reason, a sitting dog is generally waiting patiently and is in a safe place. And, while it is not the most impressive of tricks to learn, its importance in maintaining good social etiquette and, the dog’s safety, cannot be overlooked.

Command & Control

Basically, being able to sit on command works to replace unwanted and unruly behaviour while keeping your dog politely next to you. He’s less likely to jump up to greet people when he’s learned the command, and sitting becomes your dog’s way to say “please” for things he wants.

Also, you’ll find that teaching a dog to sit helps to maintain the calm, controlled demeanour many pet owners yearn for. It can decrease that out-of-control, hyper behaviour that far too many dogs display.

ost indoor cats live to be 12 to 14 years of age, even though some cats have gone beyond 20 years old. By at the age of eight, they are considered seniors and, as they enter into a golden age, they may have special needs.

Older cats are generally quieter and need a more peaceful environment, preferably one surrounded by heaps of affection.

Signs to look out for include: • Social withdrawal • Changes in vision • Change in the sleep-wake cycle • Decreased sense of smell • Fragile nails • Decreased digestion and absorption of nutrient • Reduced ability to handle stress • Changes in behaviour • Weakness • Reduced physical activity • Slowed gait speed • Increased vulnerability to physiological stresses • Mild cognitive dysfunction

• Feeding

As a cat gets older, its digestive system becomes less efficient and it requires several smaller, easily digestible meals every day. There are “life-stage” foods available that are aimed specifically for Older Cats and Less Active Cats.

These are developed to suit an older cat’s digestive system and to reduce the risk of obesity in less active cats. They provide easily digested protein. Like us, cats sometimes need extra roughage in their diet to prevent constipation and weight gain.

Any cat experiencing difficulty in eating or has lost its appetite should be examined by a vet. As your cat ages, its kidney and liver functions slow down and become compromised.

• Grooming

Older cats are generally quieter and need a more peaceful environment, preferably one surrounded by heaps of affection.

Grooming plays a vital part in a cat, and as senior felines are less nimble, they may require assistance with grooming.

Brushing a cat can be very relaxing and is usually pleasurable for both the cat and the owner. As seniors may pay little attention to their hygiene, they will appreciate your assistance in keeping clean and comfortable.

If you’ve got two companionable cats, they’ll help to groom one another.

• The Great Outdoors

Many cats enjoy spending some of their time outdoors, and a little daily exercise helps keep a cat’s body and mind healthy.

In addition to a stimulating environment, owners of aged cats will have to adjust physically challenging areas, as well as eating and sleeping quarters, to allow for easy access. Also, senior cats should have easy access to clean water as their kidney function generally declines with age.

• More Vet Trips

All cats should receive their routine vaccinations.

Discuss with your veterinarian as to what is required and appropriate for your more matured cat.

Worms and other internal parasites often cause trouble in both young and old cats – especially those that roam outdoors. As a matter of routine, it is recommended that a cat get treated for worms, especially roundworms, every three to six months.

The most common skin parasite for cats is fleas, and this usually produces an itchy reaction. The use of a flea spray or powder formulated specifically for use on cats is recommended.

• Dental Care

Older cats are more prone to dental issues such as gingivitis, loose teeth and, tartar on teeth.

As your cat ages, she should also be taken for regular dental cleaning and check-up. You can

help prevent tooth problems early by setting up a home dental hygiene routine and regularly brushing your cat’s teeth. If possible, talk to your veterinarian about using an oral hygiene spray.

• Other Issues

Nightlights can help senior felines navigate in the dark. If your cat is already vision impaired, try not to move his environment too much, especially litter boxes and furniture.

Cats like to rest in warm places so, it would be good to make sure his resting area is not situated in a cold spot in the house.

Semi-annual physical exams are essential along with observation of your cat’s behaviour and routine.

Some prefer wet food because it is more palatable and easy to swallow.

It is great that you adopted Ashlene and gave her a chance for a good and loving home! Rehomed cats can definitely feel stressed from the change of environment and owners.

Take note of her previous medical history (if any is available). Ensure she is already neutered and has received all her vaccinations and worming treatments.

It is also important to confirm that she doesn’t have any external parasites like ear mites, fur mites or fleas. Cats, especially the friendly and sweet ones, can adapt quickly to a new environment and owner in a matter of a week or so. Hopefully, her appetite will improve slightly by then.

Picky Eaters

However, I am not entirely certain that it is totally due to the environment change. Some cats, especially some petite-sized females, can be very picky when it comes to their diet choices.

Some prefer wet food because it is more palatable and easy to swallow. Others prefer kibble as they enjoy chomping hard into the biscuits. Have a look and check the inside of Ashlene’s mouth – lookout for any angry redness, pain or bad breath.

Dental disease can result in a reluctance to chew on dry foods. Cats can have painful ulcers on their tongue, inner cheeks and gums which result in a preference for wet food.

In general, felines are not active drinkers of water and a diet based mainly on canned food will often contribute much of their fluid requirements.

Some cats, especially some petite-sized females, can be very picky when it comes to their diet choices.

You can try to get a water fountain designed for cats and she may be more intrigued to drink.

Physical Examination

Bring Ashlene for a vet check-up. Blood tests can determine the health status of her internal organs like kidneys and liver. Get a thorough, physical examination to ensure she has a clean bill of health and good dental condition. For a proper dental check and cleaning, Ashlene might need to be sedated.

After making sure that she is in perfect health, you can slowly experiment with different food types or brands to find the ones that she will enjoy. You can increase Ashlene’s appetite and improve her digestive health by giving her vitamins and probiotics. p

his little-known Belgian herding dog is reminiscent of a playful boy who just had his hair tousled. He is highly intelligent, and his inquisitive expression says: “I’m ready for play!” He is also the American Kennel Club (AKC) latest addition to its register.

One of the four native dogs of Belgium, the Belgian Laekenois (pronounced lak-in-wah) is a herding dog that was used to guard people and property as well as tend to the owner’s flock and herd.

Although similar in body and temperament to the Malinois, Shepherd and Tervuren, the Laekenois differs in coat colour, texture and length, as well as region of origin. It is also the rarest of these Belgian herders.

Bit Of History

During the early part of the 20th century, the owners and breeders in Belgium urged the authorities to accept varieties of these herding canines based on the colour and region of origin.

The fawn, rough-haired varieties were given the name Laekenois (derived from the town of Laeken).

The Laekenois’ original duty, in addition to guarding and tending the flock, was to guard linen drying in the fields. The dog was also deployed as a messenger dog during both World Wars and as such, was made the target of a bounty. Needless to say the breed, along with others, suffered a sizable drop in its numbers during those days.

Fortunately, European breeders were able to restore this variety after the conflicts were over. The dog’s ability to adapt to new situations and to respond to his master’s commands made him popular with owners. Known as an alert, intelligent, and inquisitive animal, he is typically reserved with strangers, but affectionate and friendly with those he knows well.

Built For Work

This strong and sturdy dog is easily distinguished by a rough, tousled coat that requires regular

brushing. The coats come in shades of red or fawn or greyish tones. He has a long, lean head with prick ears, a square body, and a rough coat in red, fawn or greyish tones.

The body is sturdy and well proportioned, while its hindquarters are muscular. The triangular-shaped erect ears are set high on the head, and the blackened muzzle and head are fringed, giving the dog a shaggy, woolly look.

The front legs are very straight, parallel and vertical to the ground and there you can expect dense hair growth on the tail. Its almond-shaped eyes are dark with rims that contrast with lighter coloured hair.

On Guard

As a working dog, the Laekenois needs an active lifestyle with plenty of exercises. The dog thrives on high-quality dog food, and some dogs are prone to getting overweight if not exercised fully.

The dog is highly adaptable, being right at home in the city or the country. The Laekenois is highly affectionate and very protective of his master and property. He bonds with only one or two people in its lifetime but generally accepts their friends and other family members too.

Owners need to display a confident, natural authority over this high-energy dog. Consistent rules must be set early and made clear. It’s also best to have them trained and socialised right when they are still young. They are good with children too – again if taught to socialise with youngsters at an early age.

With sufficient daily exercises, the Laekenois will do alright in a city apartment or flat. This is a working dog that is accustomed to an active outdoor life. As such it needs lots of workouts, including long daily walks. While it does prefer the cooler climes, it adapts well to other conditions too.

The Laekenois needs an experienced owner to handle them as these energizer-battery dogs are extremely intelligent. They need leadership and lots of daily workouts. While they are not for everyone, they do make an excellent family companion with the right owners. p

Owners need to display a confident, natural authority over this high-energy dog.

Do You Know Your Feline’s Blood Type?

Blood typing is not only extremely vital prior to a blood transfusion, but also for cat breeding purposes.

ike humans, cats have blood groups.

However, cats do not have the blood-type O positive. The blood type of cats is composed of mainly A, B, and AB. Type A is the most common, type B is rarer, and type AB is rarest.

A cat’s blood group is determined genetically and a single pair of genes are generally responsible for determining the blood group. About 95 percent of domestic cats are type A blood, and some varieties such as exotic short-haired cats,

British short-haired cats, Persian cats, and Scottish folds have a higher percentage of type B blood.

As mentioned, the blood-type of cats is mainly A, B, or AB. Peculiarly for AB type, other blood types have innate antibodies. Understanding feline blood groups is important because unlike dogs, cats have antibodies against “non-self” or foreign erythrocytes that can cause lethal immunoreaction. Therefore, cats cannot obtain a “wrong” blood of different blood types.

Before any blood transfusion clinically, cat blood typing is extremely important.

Incompatibility of blood type can lead to fatal acute hemolysis reaction, particularly, the blood of a type A cat was given to a type B cat. The anti-type B antibodies found in type A cats have a weaker affinity towards each other, causing a mild immune response.

However, type B cats have a strong affiliated anti-type A antibody, which can cause a strong immune response. Once type B cat transfuses A-type blood, the red blood cells are rapidly destroyed, resulting in intravascular hemolysis. As little as 1 ml of type A cat blood, it is enough to cause a serious immune reaction in type B cat and, can be lethal.

Why Does My Cat Need It?

Blood-typing in cats is only tested when there is a need for blood transfusion or before breeding.

Usually, blood transfusions are required because of anaemias that can lead to blood loss (mostly acute, rarely chronic).

The decision – whether a blood transfusion should be done – depends on the ratio of red blood cells (RBC) to whole blood volume ie: haematocrit

The most widely used method in veterinarian clinics is rapid kits since it is both cost-efficient and less time-consuming.

(Hct). An RBC transfusion is recommended for critically ill cats if the Hct falls below 10-15 percent. It is equally important to observe the condition of the cat: Parameters like weak pulse, lethargy, and weakness are also indicators hinting a transfusion.

In cases of acute anaemia or if the animal needs surgery, blood transfusions are given at higher Hct values. Cats with chronic anaemia tolerate a low Hct better than those with acute anaemia.

In case of breeding, neonatal erythropoiesis or haemolysis can occur if cat having one blood group is mated with another cat having another blood group.

Cats should be blood typed and/or cross-matched if they need to receive blood and when they donate blood to ensure any transfusion is compatible.

Keep in mind that blood typing is not only extremely vital prior to a blood transfusion, but also for cat breeding purposes.

Neonatal isoerythrolysis (NI) occurs when a mommy cat with type B blood gives birth to kittens with type A or AB blood and breast-feed them with a high chance of having antigens of type A blood antibodies in the milk, which can cause a severe hemolysis reaction in the kittens.

There are no obvious clinical signs to severe hemolytic anaemia, but only subtle symptoms such as hemoglobinuria and jaundice. Therefore, we must pay attention to the blood type of the parent before breeding.

Reactions & Prevention

Despite the best of efforts to prevent them, transfusion reactions may still happen.

Depending on the severity, therapy can include glucocorticoids, epinephrine, IV fluids, and

discontinuing the transfusion. Fever is usually mild, requiring no treatment.

Crossmatching blood is the best means of preventing immune-mediated transfusion reactions even if the blood type is known for both cats. It is also imperative blood be collected and administered as aseptically as possible and cats receiving blood products are monitored carefully.

While the AB blood type is very rare, the frequency of the MiK blood type is unknown. The presence of red blood cell antigens in addition to the AB group may explain why transfusion compatibility is not guaranteed by blood typing; crossmatching is recommended prior to any transfusion.

Breeding queens, along with blood donors and, if possible, blood recipients should be blood typed.

Blood-Typing Methods

Various methods can be used to determine blood type, both in a laboratory and veterinarian clinic setting. These include card tests or immunochromatography tests. In addition, the genetic make-up of a cat (what blood type genes it is carrying) can be found by sending a blood sample or a swab to a veterinary genetics laboratory.

If the card-typing system is used, type-AB and type-B results should be confirmed by a referral laboratory as some cross-reactions have been known to occur.

Recently, there was an introduction to an alternative novel method for blood typing ie: using the gel column agglutination test. This test is

easier to interpret than the card method, although it requires a specially designed centrifuge that may be cost-prohibitive in some settings.

There are two methods in identifying blood types in feline and they are: polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using antigen-specific primers along sequencing the products and rapid kits. The most widely used method in veterinarian clinics is rapid kits since it is both cost-efficient and less time-consuming.

In veterinarian clinics, testing may be performed using a card typing system. If the cardtyping system is used, type-AB and type-B results should be confirmed by a referral laboratory.

This means that cats should always be blood typed and/or cross-matched if they need to receive blood and when they donate blood to ensure any transfusion is compatible. Many breeders are recording cats’ blood types on their pedigrees to prevent breeding cats of different blood types. p

Polish chickens look their best when they’re happy and healthy.

Yet these feathers, when left to grow wild and unkempt, could lead to vision issues.

With its lush feathering, these gorgeous chickens are more prone to infestation by mites and other parasites. However, if left unchecked, it lead to eye irritations, infections and even breathing problems.

Avoid this by treating your chook to a salon experience. Using a pair of scissors with blunt ends, trim the overgrown feathers around its eyes so that it can see better. Alternatively, tie up the crest of feathers in a hair tie but make sure it isn’t too tight. Check its crest regularly and keep it dry and clean at all times. When it gets dirty, it is time for a wash and dry.

Everything In Moderation

A well-balanced diet goes a long way in keeping your feathery friends healthy, and the first step in doing so is to get a nutritionally complete feed that is suited to your chook’s life stage.

Nutritional needs vary between young chicks, roosters or laying hens. For instance, laying hens require more calcium, and it is important to give them what they need, no more and no less.

Polish Chickens require more protein in their diet to support the growth of their feathers when they moult. Protein-rich treats such as mealworms, cooked beans, and as cannibalistic as it sounds... scrambled eggs – are recommended.

Other healthy treats that your chooks can indulge in include leafy greens and fruits like berries and bananas as these are high in fibre and vitamins. Sunflower seeds are also recommended as they are high in healthy fats and protein.

Staying Hydrated

According to The Chicken Health Handbook, water makes up for 50 percent of the chicken’s body and 65 percent of an egg. This makes water

the singular most important item in your chicken’s daily intake. Given our tropical climate, it makes sense that your chook gets plenty of clean water to stay hydrated.

The average chicken drinks between 0.5 to 1 litre of water per day, depending on the weather.

Its water supply should be changed and cleaned daily and, placed in a cool, shaded area. Consider keeping the water container above ground too.

This would prevent the chook’s crest from getting wet, and attracting unwelcomed company like lice and mites.

On hot days, take it up a notch and offer your chickens a reprieve with high-hydration snacks such as watermelon cubes and cucumbers.

Home Clean Home

Polish chickens tend to do well in confinement due to their size and can be kept in flat-based cages such as those meant for rabbits, but that’s not to say they don’t relish space. The Merck Veterinary Manual recommends a minimum of 0.18 sq m of space inside and approximately 1 sq m outside runs for a laying hen.

If kept outdoors, ensure the run is covered to protect them from unwanted visitors and that the coop is sheltered from both sun and rain. It is also important to choose housing that is wellventilated, sturdy, and easy to clean.

Just as bedsheets have to be changed regularly, the chook’s too have to be considered. Keep its bedding and cage fresh by cleaning it thoroughly once a week. Clear the soiled bedding and wash the cage before dousing it with pet-friendly disinfectant. Then, sun it for a few hours and allow it to dry thoroughly. Finally, add in fresh new bedding (wood shavings are a popular choice) and you are good to go!

You can also go one step further by sprinkling food-grade diatomaceous earth around the edges and base of the housing. This would serve to keep external parasites at bay.

A Cluckin’ Good Time

Like humans, chickens are social creatures that thrive on company and interaction. They tend to get lonely when there is just one of them. They

are affectionate creatures and like to be held and cuddled. When bored or depressed, they may resort to self-harming behaviour such as feather picking.

To prevent this, shower your chook with attention and if possible, get them a friend!

Preferably of the same breed – as these chickens tend to be low on the pecking order and do not flourish with more assertive breeds.

Polish Chickens are also a curious bunch that love exploring their surroundings. Do let them roam about regularly, but keep an eye on them as their penchant for climbing, paired with their bad eyesight, often lead them to places they really shouldn’t go.

Consider the introduction of toys to keep your chook entertained. You can prep DIY toys simply by hanging a corn cob or a bunch of vegetable leaves together on a string for your chook to peck at. Yes, most, if not all chickens are strongly motivated by food. Besides keeping them busy, activities such as these also add a nutritional boost to your chook’s diet! p

ere’s another Hollywood lie: Bugs Bunny did not only eat carrots. In fact, root vegetables are high in sugars and should be given sparingly. There are many misconceptions about rabbit care, says SPCA Singapore. Chief among them is on rabbit diet.

A healthy diet for grown rabbits should consist of 80 percent hay, 15 percent leafy greens and five percent of pellets, inclusive of treats. That translates to unlimited hay and water, two cups of vegetables and a maximum of one tablespoon of pellets and one tablespoon of treats per day.

Rabbits are, by nature, grazers. In the wild, they will eat throughout the day – even if they are full. That means a house rabbit with more than

enough food is headed for obesity, especially if their only activity is to eat. Like people, rabbits will also develop an unhealthy habit of overeating if they are often provided with a large amount of feed, says whyrabbits.com.

This may lead to obesity, tooth decay, heart problems, gastrointestinal stasis, imbalance of gut bacteria and urinary tract problems.

Hay There!

Rabbits in the wild graze on a variety of plants, including dry and fresh grasses, and leafy vegetables, and herbs. They have also been known to nibble on bark, twigs, sprouts, fruits and seeds. This same diet should be reflected for house bunnies.

Grass hay is rich in vitamins A and D, and packed with calcium, protein and other nutrients.

Hay comes in myriad types: Timothy, brome, oat (or wheat or barley) straw and orchard grass. It is recommended to mix them up if you can. A diet fortified with hay will ensure your rabbits have healthy teeth and bowels. Alfalfa hay is a legume and therefore too high in calories for adult and growing rabbits. Keep them for kits under seven months.

The House Rabbit Society recommends you start your rabbits on hay for at least two weeks before introducing them to other leafy greens, root vegetables and flowers such as cauliflower and broccoli. The grass hay will prime its gastrointestinal tract motility and flora so they can digest new foods easily.

Some good daily options include xiao bai cai, chye sim, chinese parsley, chinese celery, mustard green, parsley, carrot tops, romaine lettuce, green lettuce, nai bai and wheat grass. To add variety to their meals, include these as an occasional treat (not more than 15 percent of their diet): Broccoli, cauliflower, carrot, cilantro, celery, spinach, sweet potato leaves, kai lan, and fennel. Be sure to give the veggies a good scrub or soak them for 30 minutes to remove all traces of pesticides.

Vegetables you should absolutely avoid, says Bunny Wonderland Singapore, include red vegetables, iceberg lettuce, cabbage, bean sprout, corn, onions, raisins, prunes, any kind of nuts and beans as they could mess up your rabbits’ sensitive guts.

Green Day

If you’re looking to give your pet a sweet treat, drop that bag of sugar bombs for some fresh or dried fruits. However, as dried fruits tend to be higher in sugars, do exercise control. Limit treats to no more than one tablespoon per day, cautions Bunny Wonderland Singapore. Fruits may also be

Some fruits you may give your rabbits include apple (core and seeds removed), cherry (pit removed), pear, peach, plum (no pit), kiwi, papaya, mango, any kinds of berries, pineapple (peeled), melons (peel and seeds included), starfruit, apricot, currants, and nectarine. Rabbits also go bananas for banana; peel and give no more than a 5mm slice per 2.25kg of rabbit weight.

You may also spice up your rabbits’ meals with some fresh herbs like basil, oregano, dill or cilantro.

Last Bits Of Advice

Pellets should be given as a complement rather than the main course. They should be fresh – don’t buy more than six weeks’ worth or they will go bad – and be high (at least 18 percent) in fibre.

Reduce the number of pellets for your rabbit as it grows older.

Alfalfa pellets are okay for younger rabbits but switch to timothy pellets as they mature. If you reduce the number of pellets, remember to replace the lost minerals with more leafy greens.

Of course, rabbits need plenty of water.

Choose a sturdy wide-based ceramic bowl so it does not get flipped over. Water bottles are not recommended unless your rabbit has long fur and tends to get its chin wet, suggests Bunny Wonderland Singapore. p

Many pet animals in Singapore suffer unnecessarily due to ignorance on the part of their owners. Many, buy pets on impulse and do not fully appreciate the responsibilities of keeping an animal at home. The problem is particularly acute for rabbits because people wrongly assume that they are low-maintenance starter pets.

HRSS was established by a group of concerned volunteers in April 2002 to address this problem. They are also a certified educator for the American House Rabbit Society. HRSS runs a fostering programme to rescue and rehome abandoned rabbits. Every rescued rabbit is spayed or neutered, receives individual care including toys, medical care, healthy food and treats, and lots of love.

HRSS participates in numerous public events and maintains our website to educate the general public about rabbit care and behaviour. HRSS works closely with other animal welfare groups in Singapore such as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Cat Welfare Society and Action for Singapore Dogs to spread responsible pet ownership.

Look for these tell-tale signs that it’s a healthy Dragon Fish.

he Asian Arowana (Scleropages Formosus), also affectionately known as Dragon Fish in Asia, is a geomantic and majestic fish. Often regarded as a symbol of luck, wealth and prosperity, Arowana owners believe that if it is treated well, it will protect them from misfortunes and bless them with good fortune and good luck.

To enjoy the hobby and the pride that comes with owning the legendary Dragon Fish, read up to learn as much as you can before purchasing one. Your efforts will pay off as it will prevent unnecessary headaches and heartaches later on.

Things To Consider

When looking for a fish to acquire, bear in mind the following: Research: Do your research and purchase your micro-chipped Arowana only from licensed reputable Arowana farms (the local fish shops will have the Authentication Certificates from the farms).

Background Check: Try to know the history of the fish before purchasing, eg: when it arrives at the shop (would prefer to have settled in a few days before you buy it) and which country is it from (in case you have any preferences).

Size: It is recommended to purchase juvenile Arowanas that are around 15 - 20cm, as this is the best size to groom your Arowana. Of course, you can purchase adult fishes if it fits your taste and budget.

Active & Alert: Look for an Arowana that is actively swimming, full of vitality, and more responsive to you, as it will be less timid when it goes back to your home tank.

Diet: Check with the owner the diet that the Arowana is being fed on (eg: live feed or pellets).

And if possible, let the owner show you that the fish is eating well. Observe the fecal matter in the tank; it should be dark brown in colour and in small crumbles.

Authentication: Once you decide to buy the fish, scan the fish for the chip and verify with the farm on the authenticity of the strain that you are buying.

Preparation: Prepare your aquarium tank water at least three to four days before bringing your new Arowana back to minimise any problems caused by water quality. It is recommended to cycle your tank before adding the Arowana.

Breathing should be regular, not irregular/rapid.

Operculum should be close to its body and not curled.

Operculum of matured RTG and Crossbacks should shiny, instead of dull coloured.

Matured red Arowanas should have bright orangey-red, orange or red colours, etc.

Both eyes should be of same sizes and full, not dented or bulging.

Cornea should be bright and clear, not cloudy.

Its vent should be tight, not protruded/swollen or bloody red.
