Clarion Call

I

t is a groundswell that amasses strength in numbers. As dog rescuers collaborate with like-minded friends to create an impact, the call to do more, to do better, becomes a clear and loud clarion call.

The experience of being paw-rents to a pair of rescued dogs has brought much fulfilment to this issue’s celebrity couple: Jon Chua and Amanda Chaang (see pg: 24). Lending star power to the plight of the rescued dogs in need of a home, they give an “All You Need To Know About Adopting A Rescue Dog” preview.

Yes, given that some of these rescued animals come from grim backgrounds, require training and specialist care (that the aspiring dog owner may not be prepared for), make the adoption process that much harder.

Like many of our own friends, they champion a singular cause: To see that no one is left behind or dumped because they are not pretty or no longer serve their intended purpose.

There are others, we have to acknowledge, who form veritable pillars of support in the rescue community. Besides the grand dame – the SPCA; there’s the SOSD, Purely Adoptions and a host of other groups helping out. There’s Derrick from Voices For Animals who does regular adoption drives via Facebook.

There’s the AVS who holds free webinars on pet ownerships, and there’s that 83-year old lady cat feeder that goes out at 3am every morning for the past 60 years to do the needy.

It takes an entire community to make sure no one is left behind.

We can take inspiration from the role each one plays within the community. While we can’t all adopt a rescued animal, just being a donor, a sponsor or volunteer, will bolster the community’s work in equally powerful ways.

Sony’s ‘Pawgraphy’ Initiative For Pet Photography SINGAPORE: Sony has launched “Pawgraphy”, an initiative that encourages paw parents to celebrate the love of their furry four-legged companions through the lens of photography and casual video shooting.

Pet lovers can visit the Pawgraphy microsite to access a bevvy of resources and tutorials available. Among them is a basic introduction to pet photography and casual videography aimed at inspiring beginners.

SINGAPORE: Grab has expanded its transport offerings with the introduction of its ondemand premier ride options – GrabPet XL. The transportation service, catering to consumers with

GrabPet XL is an iteration of the GrabPet service, which has seen a ridership growth of close to 170 percent between April 2019 and April 2021.

The service would utilise larger vehicle models, allowing for the transport of more passengers and pets. For instance, a GrabPet XL vehicle can ferry three passengers and three small to medium-sized pets (up to 41cm in length), or two large pets (41cm in length or more) in a single trip.

On the other hand, GrabPet can accommodate up to two passengers, two small to medium-sized pets, or one large pet.

All household pets licensed by the Animal & Veterinary Service except birds, are permitted on the service. All vehicles are outfitted with foldable pet seat covers and adjustable leashes. In addition, Grab offers insurance coverage for travelling pets for the period of the transit.

Rides start from $16.00 for GrabPet XL with the fare based on distance and subject to additional $0.30 platform fees.

Buddle SG: Online Pet Adoption Platform

SINGAPORE: Buddle.SG, Singapore’s online pet adoption platform, has teamed up with local shelters and independent rescuers to list dogs, cats and small animals looking for their forever home.

Acting as the bridge between adopters and adoptees, Buddle.SG is leveraging social media

platforms such as Facebook and Instagram to give these animals a better chance of finding a home.

Launched on 1 March 2021, Buddle.

SG offers potential adopters/fosterers entry via Facebook and Instgram to select available pets. Similarly, potential listers can put an online listing via the same platforms.

Successful adopters will receive a free sponsored starter kit that includes: food, treats, pee pads or litter, food bowl, etc.

SINGAPORE: Fortunately for animal shelters, fosterers and adopters, getting a pet may soon become a more seamless process.

Pawtner, which means ‘partner with paw’, is a digital application that provides an all-in-one solution to pet adoption, and a one-stop-shop for all pet-related services.

Using the principles of automation and algorithm matching, Pawtner, collects data from potential adopters and shelters.

This means that requests for adoption and eligibility checks are done by the app, thereby saving both parties lots of time and effort on the adoption process.

Once a ‘match’ between the animal and adopter has been established, Pawtner’s systematic process tracking, logistic management and payment gateway will facilitate a seamless adoption process.

After the adoption process is completed, Pawtner also guides adopters through the

pet ownership process by directing them to customised post-adoption subscription packages.

Relying on the same algorithm technology, these packages will also be curated according to the type of pet that the user has adopted, including food, medical services, insurance and many more.

Man’s Best Friend May Have Been First Domesticated In Saudi Arabia

The burial site in a badlands area of AlUla in north-west Saudi Arabia.

ALULA, SAUDI ARABIA: A team of archaeologists in north-west Saudi Arabia has uncovered the earliest evidence of dog domestication by Saudi Arabia’s ancient inhabitants.

The discovery came from one of the projects in the large-scale archaeological surveys and excavations of the region commissioned by the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU).

The researchers found the dog’s bones in a burial site that is one of the earliest monumental tombs identified in Arabia. Evidence shows the earliest use of the tomb was circa 4300 BC and received burials for at least 600 years during the Neolithic-Chalcolithic era.

This is the earliest evidence of a domesticated dog in Arabia by a margin of circa 1,000 years. It was in the volcanic uplands site that 26 fragments of a single dog’s bones were found, alongside with bones from 11 humans. The dog’s bones showed

signs of arthritis, which suggests the animal lived with the humans into its middle or old age.

The dog’s bones were dated to between circa 4200 and 4000 BC. Rock art found in the region indicates that the Neolithic inhabitants used dogs when hunting ibex, wild asses and other animals.

Located 1,100km from Riyadh in northwest Saudi Arabia, AlUla is a vast area, covering 22,561sq km, includes a lush oasis valley, towering sandstone mountains and ancient cultural heritage sites dating back thousands of years.

OKLAHOMA, USA: This Australian Shepherd/ Border Collie mix born in Oklahoma, USA has six legs and two tails!

Skipper was born in a litter of nine in midFebruary and despite the apparent abnormality, she’s completely normal, says the folks at Neel Veterinary Hospital.

According to a Facebook post by the hospital, she has a congenital conjoining disorder and was part of a pair of twins that did not entirely separate in utero.

The vets say she is the first of her kind to survive, and many has dubbed her “a miracle.”

However, she may require physical therapy and help with mobility in the future.

In an update on Facebook on 24 Feb, Skipper has also caught the eye of Milk-Bone who has supplied her with a lifetime’s supply of treats, and who is helping to cover her veterinary costs.

Who Saved Who? NEW JERSEY, USA: An emotional, heartfelt tribute to the love between a man and his best friend. Listen to a new song based on singersongwriter Criss Patrik’s real life story about pet adoption and how it changed his life is making waves in the music industry.

The single from American Road, a country rock band, sees lead singer Patrik asking the question “Who Saved Who?” It features his dog Champ on the cover and at the end of the video.

Lil Bub: The Earth Years INDIANA, USA: Considered by most as the most amazing cat on the planet, the perma-kitten with saucer-sized eyes and a tongue perpetually flopping from her mouth now has a book celebrating her life on earth.

etting a dog for the first time is not an easy task, more so when they are rescued dogs – as they often come with their own baggage. Ask Jon and Amanda; they know all too well what it entails.

They are celebrities in their own right who just got married and are charting their path in life together as a couple. He is Jon Chua, 31, lead guitarist, vocalist and founding member of a local band, The Sam Willows. A local boy who made good in the entertainment world and is a sought after brand ambassador for companies like Audi, Hugo, Adidas, etc.

She is Amanda Chaang, also 31, a tv presenter from Malaysia (formerly with Astro SuperSport TV), lively hostess for events and campaigns for brands like AIA and Tag Heuer. They were

married in late June 2018 and their family unit presently includes two adopted long-haired Dachshunds: Chilli, 3 and Salsa, 21/2.

While they are busy with their own schedules, they have both devoted time and energy in giving a voice to the voiceless – bringing the plight of homeless dogs to the forefront. With their combined experiences as paw-rents to Chilli and Salsa, they basically can write a book on “Adopting a Rescue Dog: What You Should Know”.

Before You Get a Dog…

Making a decision to get a dog shouldn’t be an impulsive choice. Both Jon and Amanda knew the implications of committing to dog ownership before the ink dried on the adoption papers.

Jon with the very friendly Chilli. On adopting rescued dogs he says: “You might be crazy about dogs, but playing with them and looking after one is a whole different ballgame. They do demand a lot of time and energy from you.”

Amanda grew up surrounded by canines, felines and an accoutrement of other pets, it was an easy decision to make when it came to adopting a dog. “I grew up with dogs my whole life” says Amanda. Her family members back in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, all shared the same innate love for the less fortunate animals – even the household dog was retrieved from the pound.

The effervescent Amanda has a penchant for ‘sausage dogs’: “I grew up with Dachshunds – my father and other relatives adored them, so that stuck.”

Jon got his first dog at around 20 or 21 years of age. “I got bitten by a dog when young and mum was scared of them,” so no dogs then. However, when he moved from his family home, he promptly got a dog as he felt “it was the right place and right time then.”

He took to Allie, a Shetland Sheepdog that put up for sale by an animal farm at Pasir Ris. She was originally put up for sale, but after 13 months and no buyers, she was put up for adoption. When Jon got her, she was already fully grown. “Ummm… the dog is with my ex-girlfriend now…”

Fast forward to the present: Both Jon and Amanda had wanted a dog for some time and

during a photoshoot session a just couple of years back, with “five or six Corgis” on the set, a friend texted in. He says: “There was a long-haired Dachshund in Joo Chiat area, and we were on a ‘dog-high’ from of the shoot. Besides that, we have been discussing this topic (of getting a dog) for a while already.”

A bubbly Amanda adds: “We went to Joo Chiat, saw Chilli and we fell in love straight away!”

While Jon notes that Chilli tends to bark more.

Amanda puts it to a case of “manja” – very needy.

“She’s very welcoming, too friendly at times, but I am OK with it,” says Amanda.

Do Your Research First…

Before getting a dog, you need to consider if you can take care of them – more so, if they are rescued dogs.

A much-wanted companion for Chilli opened their home to Salsa. She came in via a heart wrenching route. Sometime in October last year, Derrick from Voices For Animals had a total of seven dogs up for adoption.

They responded to Derrick’s plea on Facebook and picked Salsa with her shy but endearing looks.

The story goes that Salsa was de-barked when she

was brought in from Taiwan by a breeder. After a few litters, she was finally given up for adoption as she was deemed too small and not well suited for the money-making purpose.

“Oh, she was in a bad condition,” said Jon. They promptly brought her to the vet and there got her teeth cleaned, neutered, and had her nipples removed surgically (the vet recommended this due to her condition). But that was not the end. She developed a hernia and had to go under the knife soon after.

All Jon and Amanda could do for Salsa, in her inital weeks with them, was sit by her side and molly-coddle her. She was not interested in anything and was not incentivised by food either.

However, things took a turn for the better as Salsa finally came around. She learnt fast – thanks to a charming Chilli.

While Chilli made the training process easier, it was nonetheless still a struggle with Salsa. Good friends like Eli Atias, the K9 dogtrainer and author, came around to help with the process. On training rescued dogs, Jon says: “It teaches us a lot of patience – you need to have patience for sure!”

Besides patience, a whole lot of time and effort is required. With the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, Jon found it be “a blessing in disguise as we both now had time to train her.”

It’s Not All Fun & Games…

You might be crazy about dogs, but playing with them and looking after one is a whole different ballgame. They do demand a lot of time and energy from you.

Jon notes that Chilli is very intelligent. “We had to potty train her and she did it on the first day home. Everyone who was there clapped for her – Nathan (Hartono) was there too.”

Before the restrictions were imposed, Jon’s brother-in-law chipped in as one part of a reserve team – when they travelling, or had gigs on hand at attend to.

Regular visits to the vets is recommended for all dogs. More so for the pair of Dachshunds, as areas of concern revolve around their elongated backbones and diet (especially for Salsa given her background prior to adoption). Appointments with the groomers are also penned in with regularity.

Amanda: “It’s best to teach children how to approach dogs and cats; pat them and care for them at an early age.”

While both eat the same food, Jon remarks that Chilli is more demanding. “Salsa is a very simple dog – very chill”, he adds. Foodwise, the couple gets prepared fresh frozen dog food, all well portioned and of human-food grade. “It’s a mix with kibbles for their daily meals. There’s salmon oil every morning to improve the fur,” says Jon.

Sharing The Chores…

The couple share responsibilities and duties on daily basis that includes feeding and appointments.

Bedtime sees Jon creeping up to bed with Salsa as Amanda is already curled up with Chilli.

Jon’s winsome smile is on at max when he talks about his “Studio Dogs” at his side during recording sessions. “They get pretty excited initially, saying their hi’s to everyone at the studio – then they chill.”

If You Intend To Adopt…

Pet ownership should start from a young age, advocates Amanda. “It’s best to teach children how to approach dogs and cats; pat them and care for them at an early age.” Kindness and compassion will follow to that end.

In addition, a supportive culture and a dogfriendly environment where dogs are welcomed almost everywhere. “It has to be a communitydriven thing” she adds.

Jon concurs and would like to see more pet-friendly food and beverage as well as entertainment outlets. “Places have to start opening up here in Singapore. Exposing others to animals in public spaces would help develop a more pet-conscious Singapore.” p

Jon asserts “The person must genuinely love dogs and have lots of patience.” His testimony is borne from experience caring for the two dogs.

He follows the Voices For Animals (VFA) group on Facebook and recommends them highly.

“If you have friends who want a dog, check out the VFA.” He does a shout-out for Derrick and the VFA group, noting that the organisation is well run and well maintained. “They ask all the right questions”.

Jon says after a while watching Derrick at work for the VFA, he notes that Derrick knows who’s genuine (in adopting) just from their body language. “He’s doing a very thorough job,

ental disease is one of the most common medical conditions in pets. By the age of three, 70 percent of cats and 80 percent of dogs have some form of dental disease which can take years off a pet’s life.

Dental disease can result in life-threatening complications. Bacteria from the mouth travels under the gum line and into the bloodstream affecting all major organs, including the heart, liver, and kidneys. That is why pet owners must take preventative measures.

Here are some great tips to keeping your pet’s breath fresh!

• Regular Brushing

You need to brush your pet’s teeth once a day! Use a pet-safe toothpaste and a finger brush or cloth to gently clean away plaque. This is very important and is the most effective way to prevent dental disease.

Without brushing, plaque can build up, putting the dog or cat at risk of bad breath, gum disease, and tooth decay. This may later cause painful infection affecting the animal’s ability or desire to eat and cause more damage to its health.

Opt for rubbery and bendable chew toys that allow treats to be tucked inside. Avoid thick, heavy, rawhide toys, hard Yak cheese or Antler horns that can break or fracture a pet’s teeth or worse, cause gastrointestinal problems if a pet swallows a large piece.

• Dental Scaling & Polishing

Proper pet dental care involves more than just brushing or scraping tartar off the teeth. A thorough cleaning involves scaling, probing, and polishing at the clinic by a veterinarian.

When performed correctly, this helps catch early signs of dental disease and abnormalities and possibly, prevent future extractions. p

Could it be Feline Stomatitis?

eline stomatitis, also known as Feline Chronic Gingivostomatitis, affects about 0.7 – 4 percent of cats. It is a painful and often debilitating, chronic inflammation of the mouth tissues.

There are two main forms: One form involves inflammation of the gums surrounding the teeth.

The second form, called Caudal Stomatitis or Faucitis, affects the back of the mouth where the upper and lower jaws come together known as the “fauces.” Caudal Stomatitis is more challenging to treat.

Cats with feline stomatitis are often in great pain and have difficulty chewing and eating. They may lose weight, have bad breath (halitosis), drool, swallow excessively, chatter their teeth, paw their mouth, and even bleed from the gums.

These cats may also have a scruffy coat because of decreased self-grooming and are thin from poor nutrition.

Cause & Effect

Researchers have yet to discover the cause of Feline Stomatitis. They however, know that cats with this problem have altered immune functions that predispose them to develop Feline Stomatitis.

Regular dental care and medical management are typically the first line of treatment.

The reason behind the tooth extraction is simple: Teeth provide a surface for bacteria to cling to, which causes the body’s immune system to overreact. Removing teeth eliminates the opportunity for bacterial colonisation. Usually, tooth extraction involves the removal of just the molars and premolars.

Overall, cats tend to do very well after this procedure and tend to eat better once healed.

In fact, some cats can even eat dry food without teeth. In one study, 80 percent of cats benefited from tooth extraction, but it is not a guaranteed cure, and some cats will also need to continue with medical management. p

Diagnosis & Treatments

There is no specific test for Feline Stomatitis.

Veterinarians often diagnose Feline Stomatitis based on the cat’s symptoms and an examination of the oral cavity. Veterinarians may screen for FeLV and FIV, perform dental x-rays to check for tooth root resorption. They may also biopsy the affected tissue to differentiate Feline Stomatitis from oral cancer.

Regular dental care and medical management are typically the first line of treatment. A routine dental procedure should be performed to address any inflammatory dental disease. Medical management is aimed at controlling the pain and oral infection and reducing inflammation.

Steroids can be used to reduce the inflammation in the mouth and provide some relief from the discomfort. However, steroids lose effectiveness over time for this condition, and significant side-effects with long-term use can be an issue.

If your cat does not respond well to medical management, your vet will likely recommend extracting its teeth.

The cat’s body launches an excessive inflammatory response to the plaque bacteria in the mouth, which, without intervention, may progress to a more severe auto-immune condition in which the body also attacks the dental tissue itself.

Recent studies also suggest that feline calicivirus (a virus that can affect a cat’s oral cavity), and viruses that affect the immune system such as feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), may play a role.

Medical management is aimed at controlling the pain and oral infection and reducing inflammation.

Cats Can Help Children With Autism

hildren with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experienced significant increases in the social skill of empathy, significant decreases in problem behaviours including bullying and hyperactivity/inattention, and also less separation anxiety after the introduction of a shelter cat.

The above were the results of a study published in the Journal of Pediatric Nursing titled, “Exploratory study of cat adoption in families of children with Autism: Impact on children’s social skills and anxiety” published in May 2021.

Gretchen Carlisle, PhD, MEd, RN, research scientist at the University of Missouri Research Center for Human Animal Interaction (ReCHAI) said: “Previous research has focused on interactions of dogs with children who have ASD, but dogs may not provide the best fit for

Bonding Together

Children and parents also felt strong bonds with their new cat almost immediately after adoption and despite the responsibilities involved in care for a cat, these bonds did not decrease over time. The researchers conclude that shelter cats may be beneficial for some children with ASD while not necessarily creating a burden for their parents.

Survey Results

Participating families of children were randomised into two groups. Families in one group adopted a shelter cat immediately and were followed for 18 weeks. Other families were in a control group for 18 weeks with no cat and then adopted a shelter cat and were followed for an additional 18 weeks.

Surveys were collected every six weeks, measuring children’s social skills and anxiety and parent/child bonds with their cat. Shelter cats available for adoption in the study were all required to pass the Feline Temperament Profile with a score of greater than or equal to 20, identifying them as having a calm temperament.

“In the families of children with ASD who adopted temperament-screened shelter cats in this study, parents and children bonded with their new cats,” said Dr Vicki Thayer, Interim Executive Director of the Winn Feline Foundation. “We hope other scientists will further study cat adoption in families of children with ASD, following this important exploratory study.” p

Increased Risk Of Diabetes…

If Your Dog Is Diabetic People who have a dog with type 2 diabetes are 38% more at risk of having the disease.

wners of a dog with diabetes are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than owners of a dog without diabetes. No shared risk of diabetes could be detected for cat owners and their cats though.

These novel findings were from a registerbased study conducted at Uppsala University, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Karolinska Institutet and the University of Liverpool.

To investigate whether dog and cat owners and their pets share a risk of developing diabetes, a Swedish veterinary insurance scoured the country’s population and health registers for answers. They covered more than 175,000 dog owners and nearly 90,000 cat owners and the results showed that owning a dog with diabetes was associated with a 38 percent increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Published in the British Medical Journal at the end of Dec 2020, it concluded that it is possible that dogs with diabetes could serve as a sentinel for shared health behaviours and environmental exposures.

“Our results indicate that a dog with diabetes in the household might signal an increased risk of the dog owner developing type 2 diabetes as well.

We have not had access to information about household lifestyle behaviours, but we think the association might be due to shared physical activity patterns and possibly also shared dietary habits as well as shared risk of adiposity”, says Beatrice Kennedy, a postdoctoral research fellow in medical epidemiology at Uppsala University, one of the senior authors of the study.

Canine diabetes generally requires lifelong insulin therapy. Diabetes is more commonly diagnosed in older dogs, and in females that have not been spayed (castrated) during their prolonged dioestrus phase.

Common Factors

Diabetes in female dogs has also been linked to overweight, and occurs more often in some Swedish hunting dog breeds.

“Humans and dogs have lived together for at least 15,000 years, and continue to share their everyday lives for better or worse. In this unique study, we show that there might be common lifestyle and environmental factors that influence the risk of diabetes in the household, both in the dogs and in their owners,” comments Tove Fall, Professor of Molecular Epidemiology at Uppsala University, the other senior author of the study.

alking with your dog seems like a basic and simple activity. However, it is also a source of much conflicting discourse among dog owners, trainers and vets.

Questions arise, like: • What devices should be used on a walk?

• Should my dog be allowed to walk at his pace and sniff?

• Should my dog be walking close to the walker, otherwise known as the ‘heel’ command?

• The retractable mechanism can also be a source of rope burn injury to the handlers.

• Avoid neck collars, choke chains, prong collars and electric collars as these have the potential to cause serious neck injury and harm to the dog.

The heel command has its usefulness when the handler wants to keep the dog close to his side. For instance, in busy areas or when there may be distractions about. However, it is not recommended that this be done throughout the walk as it prevents the dog from relaxing, and sniffing the ground around.

A dog’s natural pace is also faster than a human’s, and it will be difficult for a dog to maintain this controlled heeling pace for the entire duration of a walk.

Be mindful that even if your dog is sociable and friendly, the other dog may not be comfortable with your dog.

because the dog either takes a step back or turns around to give you focus. When the leash is nicely relaxed, proceed on the walk. Repeat this as necessary.

• Go The Reverse Direction When the dog pulls, issue a ‘let’s go’ cue, turn away from him, and walk off in the other direction without jerking on the leash.

Use an excited voice or a treat to get his attention but avoid pulling on the leash to get him moving. When he is following you and the leash is relaxed, turn back and continue on your way.

Both these techniques may take a few rounds of practice but the dog will soon understand that pulling will not be reinforced with forward movement. Instead, the dog will learn that walking calmly by your side or even slightly in front of you on a loose leash will allow your dog to get to where he wants to go.

It is also important to practice reeling in long leashes and not getting entangled in them.

Remember that it is always best to survey the environment and stay away from triggers that will make the dog pull in the first place.

Just as humans have different fitness levels, depending on their age and health status, the same applies for dogs – with a few more considerations, including their breed and physical conformation.

For instance, it not advisable to run long distances with a puppy as their growth plates have not closed and the impact of the run can affect their joints.

Different breeds are suited for long-distance versus mid-distance versus short jogs. See table below.

This list may also vary depending on the individual animal. Our Singapore Special dogs are likely to be suitable candidates for mid-distance walks and a short jog depending on their built, physique and stamina levels.

All owners should bring their dogs for a vet check to ascertain their health condition and presence of pre-existing conditions eg: heart, joint, respiratory problems that may make them less suitable for strenuous physical exercise.

Should I Let My Dog Meet Other Dogs When On Walks?

Dogs that are leashed cannot display natural behaviours like running away from a situation or a dog that makes them feel uncomfortable.

When this flight response is removed, the other response the dog has is to fight. And breaking up a fight between dogs caught in leashes is no easy task.

So, unless your dog knows the other dog already and it is not a meeting for the first time, a face-to-face meeting on leash is not a recommended way to introduce dogs for the first time.

he most popular dog breeds of 2020 in the US were released on 16 March, 2021 based on American Kennel Club (AKC) registration statistics.

The ever-popular Labrador Retriever remains the firm favourite dog for the 30th consecutive year. This is followed by French Bulldog taking the second spot just above the German Shepherd Dog and Golden Retriever for the first time.

The little sausage dog aka Dachshund, has made its way into the top 10 this year, knocking the Pembroke Welsh Corgi down to number 11.

“America’s love for Labs is undeniable,” said AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo. “They’re such versatile, family-friendly dogs that it’s no wonder they’ve been so popular for 30 years. The French Bulldog, however, seems poised to end the Lab’s reign. The playful, adaptable Frenchie has become increasingly popular over the past decade and shows no signs of slowing down.”

Rise To Fame

Contrary to its name, the French Bulldog does not have its roots in France. They, in fact, first originated in England in the late 18th century.

Due to their temperament, they became popular among many English workers, particularly so among lace workers in the city of Nottingham.

When the lace industry moved to France, many workers brought their dogs with them.

Over in France, it is believed that they were bred with local terriers, giving us the very first bouledogues français, or French bulldogs. According to the French Bulldog Club of America, the French “developed a more uniform breed – a dog with a compact body, straight legs, but without the extreme underjaw of the English Bulldog. Some had the erect ‘bat ears’ while others had ‘rose’ ears.

It is little wonder that the Americans who travelled to France at this time fell in love with the breed, bringing them back with them to the USA. In 1896, the French Bulldog appeared at the Westminster Kennel Club’s show in New York, and it was there that they became known as “Frenchie”, a name that has stuck with them till this very day.

Now imagine all that wrapped up in one feisty little package affectionately known as the French Bulldog.

Frenchies are easygoing, charming and have an excellent sense of humour, despite looking anything but. A lovable, good-natured breed, these pups make great companions and have fast become the city-dwellers dog of choice.

Frenchies, while a reasonably quiet dog, however, snorting, wheezing, flatulence and natural noises are a part of the breed’s normal physiology.

If you love your apartment and love a Frenchie, the French Bulldog will fit perfectly. It does not need a great deal of exercise, and they will be delighted to spend most of their time at home, lapping up your attention. However, do note that the French Bulldog is not allowed as a pet in a Singapore HDB flat.

One thing you must know about your Frenchie is that he will want to spend every minute of every day right by your side. Preparing a meal in the kitchen? They’ll be right next to you. Feel like you could use a shower? Well, be prepared to have an audience.

So whether you love to lounge on the couch or wander the outdoors, your Frenchie would love to be with you and he is going to follow you everywhere.

While your pup may not want to head outside, that doesn’t mean they don’t need to exercise.

a stroll, do remember that because Frenchies are a flat-faced breed, they have difficulty regulating their body temperature and can overheat rather quickly in sunny Singapore.

A short coat that’s easy to care for means that they don’t shed as much as other breeds.

However, be sure to set aside some time for hands-on cleaning of your Frenchie’s skinfolds.

With a warm, damp washcloth or mild baby wipe, thoroughly clean the wrinkles in your dog’s skin and follow up with a dry towel, ensuring any excess moisture is removed.

French Bulldogs don’t make perfect companions for just us humans. They typically get along well with other animals too. But do keep in mind that, like people, dogs are individuals too, and while most Frenchies get along with everyone, yours might be the exception.

Males also appeared to be prone to these health issues than females. Dr Dan O’Neill, RVC Senior Lecturer and the main author of the study, says: “Males were more likely to get eight of the 26 most common health problems while there were no issues that females were more likely to get than males.”

When choosing a Frenchie, it’s important to look out for any existing health issues. While there is no way to ensure your pet has a life free of health problems, don’t forget to book your pup for all his necessary screenings regularly. p

As perfect as Frenchies are, they do come with some challenges, the main one being their long list of genetic health issues due to cross-breeding over the decades.

A study conducted by the UK’s Royal Veterinary College (RVC), published in 2018, found that French Bulldogs are predisposed to a range of health conditions, including breathing problems, skin fold dermatitis, and cherry eye, eye ulcers, patellar luxation and demodectic mange.

rachycephalic breeds are unmistakable.

These flat-faced cats have short muzzles, flat faces and big, bulging eyes. Persian, Himalayan, and Burmese cats are the most wellrecognised of these smushed-face cats.

In Brachycephaly, the skull bones are shortened, producing that characteristic punchedin-the-face appearance. Because of a skull structure, a cat’s jaw is affected, causing the teeth and the jaw to be misaligned.

Developmental dental anomalies can arise as these cats cannot bite and chew properly, leading to dental problems and difficulty eating.

Research Papers

A study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association by Lisa Mestrinho, João Louro, Iněs Gordo, and their colleagues in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association in 2018, was done to determine the prevalence of dental abnormalities in a population of purebred, brachycephalic Persian and Exotic cats.

The researchers looked at different geographic regions and evaluated the potential relationship with oral disease in these cats.

The study included 50 purebred Persian and eight Exotic cats. The cats were anaesthetised to perform a complete dental examination, dental charting, 3-view oral photography and full-mouth dental radiography.

The cases were from California, USA; Lisbon, Portugal and Krakow, Poland. The cats were almost equally distributed among the sexes.

Common Abnormalities

The results showed that malocclusions (where teeth are misaligned ) were commonly observed in 36 (72%) cats. Malocclusion of the canine teeth (30%) and crowding of the incisor teeth (50%) were the most common abnormalities.

Crowding of teeth involving the premolar and molar teeth was also observed. Thirty-two of the fifty cats (64%) had at least one tooth with some form of positional change where orientation was the most common positional abnormality (79%) followed by rotation (1.4%) and impaction (0.37%).

Predisposed Problems

The investigators state the results suggest the unique oral and dental features associated with Brachycephaly can predispose Persian and Exotic cats to dental diseases such as tooth resorption and periodontal disease.

They concluded that veterinarians should monitor brachycephalic breeds of cats for the development of dental diseases. Knowledge of the particular dental anomalies common in these cats could help detect and mitigate dental disease in these breeds. p

A study showed that 72% of these cats had malocclusions (where teeth are misaligned).

The mandibular (lower jaws) incisor teeth were the most commonly affected by positional change. Numerical abnormalities were found in 38 (76%) cats, primarily hypodontia, 32 (64%), and 6 (12%) with hyperdontia. Maxillary (upper jaws) second premolars were most commonly absent teeth and maxillary first molars were second most common.

Periodontal disease was found in 44 (88%) cats. As expected, periodontal disease was noted in older cats versus those without periodontal disease. Tooth resorption (a condition in which the body begins breaking down and absorbing the structures that form the tooth) was also present in 35 (70%) cats.

The teeth most affected with inflammatory resorption were premolar teeth and canine teeth were the ones most commonly affected with replacement resorption.

Knowledge of the particular dental anomalies common in these cats could help detect and mitigate dental disease in these breeds.

hile many people are content with a pet dog or cat, others may seek less traditional animal friends. For those looking for more exotic pets, chickens can offer not only companionship but also benefits such as egg production, soil fertilisation, and educational opportunities to help forge the connection between farm and table.

Dr Ashley Navarrette, a clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, says that chickens are quite intelligent and can even be trained. They are very food motivated and can even be taught to complete agility courses, though this requires a lot of time and patience.

Chickens are often well-suited to life in suburban or semi-suburban environments. They require about 0.1 – 0.2 sq m per chicken inside

their coop, with an additional minimum of 0.7 sq m of outside access.

Potential owners should be aware that even if they have the space, their property may not always be the right place to keep chickens. They also should verify how many chickens their apartments/condominiums allows them to keep before adopting.

“Look into your local ordinances or regulations within your vicinity before considering acquiring a chicken or multiple chickens as a pet or backyard project,” said Navarrette. “Also understand that chickens can live up to eight years and, therefore, are a long-term commitment.”

“As with any group of animals, there will be social dynamics and there will be an established hierarchy,” she said. “There is usually a dominant hen and subsequent ‘pecking order’ below. Males will also fight for the top spot. One must be careful in regard to housing roosters, as they can be aggressive, loud, and against many city ordinances.”

Owners must also be wary of interactions with other species, as many dogs, cats, ferrets, and larger reptiles will see chickens as prey. Navarrette says interactions between chickens and other pets should be limited and always supervised.

Navarrette says that most chickens require minimal veterinary care and are usually treated as issues arise. Health issues can be largely avoided with appropriate care.

To keep chickens in their best health, owners should feed their birds a diet based on their stage of life. Their diet can also be supplemented by allowing chickens to forage in dirt or grass, which is a natural behaviour.

“Appropriate diets can be found at feed stores, and it’s best to stick with those from nationally recognised brands, as they tend to have the greatest amount of research behind them and are appropriately balanced,” Navarrette said.

“It is best to avoid breads/starches, chocolate, onions, caffeine, avocado, and excess salt, as these can be harmful to chickens and other bird species.

Be sure to research toxic plants in your backyard as well.”

olloquially known as “desert rats”, the Mongolian Gerbil is a small omnivorous rodent that has been around our island since the 1980s.

Most of today’s pet gerbil populations are descended from some of the wild individuals who were caught in the vast, open Mongolian Desert.

They are very efficient creatures, consuming little water and producing dry, hard pellets as excretion.

Over the years, they have grown to become popular as pets. They have a lifespan of three to four years, though some live till five or six. They come in a great variety of colours and markings and they generally have an agreeable temperament.

Unlike mice or hamsters, gerbils can often be seen standing up on their hind legs.

Gerbils are curious, lively, highly sociable and live well in pairs or small groups called clans.

These factors make them reasonably easy pets to look after, but as they are different from other small mammals, there are a few extra things you need to know before bringing them home.

Curious Creatures

Gerbils are quite diurnal, which means, like us, they are more active during the day. They take a series of short naps throughout the day, and during these times, they should not be disturbed.

Being social creatures, gerbils are friendly and easy to tame with regular handling. They do not bite readily unless they feel threatened or when faced with unfamiliar individuals.

Unlike mice or hamsters, gerbils can often be seen standing up on their hind legs as they observe their surroundings with great curiosity. They will thump their hind legs rapidly when startled, agitated or excited, but mostly this serves as a danger signal to other gerbils and a cue to hide.

Social Creatures

Gerbil should ideally come in pairs or a bonded small group; they do not do well as a solitary pet.

Keeping a same-sex pair is recommended and litter-mates usually do well together. However, never put two or more adult gerbils together in the same place if they have never met before – they do not like strangers and the results are often dire.

The split cage method is the recommended way to safely and gradually introduce two gerbils together.

Secure Space

Gerbils may be small, but they are highly active and excellent chewers ‒ this means they need a lot of space to burrow, climb and run around in.

Since they will spend the vast majority of their lives in an enclosure, it needs to be of a size where they can get adequate entertainment and exercise.

Gerbils housed in enclosures that are too small can become temperamental. This often leads to aggression and fights.

Glass or acrylic tanks with modified covers are suited for housing purposes. A standard 2 feet acrylic tank is appropriate for a pair of gerbils, and these can be easily purchased for about $35. Tanks provide clear views, and a 20-gallon tank (approx 61 x 30 x 40 cm) can be easily carried and washed by a single person.

No matter your chosen form of housing, make sure it has a secure, chew-proof lid that provides adequate ventilation. Gerbils are adept jumpers and escape easily with a loose or partially uncovered lid. They can also chew their way out of a lid if it’s made of plastic or wood, as with guppy tank covers, wooden slats and plastic grids.

Most owners prefer a mix of hay, aspen shavings and paper-based beddings. Avoid scented beddings, newspaper and aromatic wood like cedar and pine. These woods contain compounds called phenols and can cause respiratory problems and liver distress in gerbils.

Chow Time

Gerbils eat seeds, grains, fruits, vegetables and even insects. A high-quality mix should be given as a base, and varied types of food can be added optionally for greater variety and nutritional quality. Most owners will feed a combination of seed/grain mix and lab blocks.

Gerbils do not have any special dietary requirements like extra Vitamin C, but they do require the following nutritional composition in their diet: Adult gerbils:

12% protein, 6-8% fat

Juveniles and Breeding Adults:

16-18% protein, 7-9% fat

Gerbils older than 2 years:

10-11% protein, 3-5% fat

The most popular housing for gerbils are glass or acrylic tanks with modified covers.

Hence, avoid mixes that are excessively high in protein or fat, or that contain too many sunflower seeds. You may remove the sunflower seeds in the mix and feed them as treats though unflavoured pumpkin seeds are preferred as it is lower in fat.

For young gerbils (below 4 months) and breeding moms, supplement extra protein regularly, in the form of oats, wheatgerm, dog/cat kibble, boiled egg, mealworms, etc – all in small quantities, of course.

Gerbils should have constant access to clean drinking water. A glass water bottle is recommended as gerbils can easily chew up plastic ones. Make sure to check if the water bottle is jammed/leaking. A leaking bottle can quickly soil the bedding, encourage fungal and bacteria growth, and cause health issues.

Enriching Accessories

Gerbil should ideally come in pairs or a bonded small group.

For a basic setup, we recommend adding the following items: a ceramic food bowl, a clean glass jar (medium or large-sized like pasta sauce/coffee bean jars are good) for digging, and wooden or ceramic hideout(s).

A sand bowl (with a layer of bathing sand) can be given, and we recommend chinchilla bathing sand over hamster sands. Use only wood, glass or ceramic items in your gerbil housing.

Many gerbils also enjoy running on wheels though not all will use them. Get a medium-sized wheel large enough that the gerbils’ back can be held relatively straight while running. (usually no smaller than 21cm).

A good wheel should have a solid surface and back wall. Do not use wheels with large gaps

and support struts that can trap gerbils’ tails or feet. Take note that a gerbil will also jump into a spinning wheel even when his friend is running top speed in it.

Other enrichments that are well-loved and many gerbil enthusiasts swear by are empty toilet roll tubes, crushed plain paper, and inkfree cardboard boxes. (Avoid egg cartons for their bacteria, waxed cardboards, heavily printed documents, newspapers and Thermal receipts).

These will usually be shredded in no time and become part of the bedding.

When introducing toys with openings, ensure the opening is wide enough not to trap the gerbil’s head as they are curious and like to stick their heads into things.

Other Considerations

Gerbils are hardy rodents amongst the other choices of small pets but can also fall ill with old age or fall out. Known as declanning, this is when a stable social unit start rejecting the current state of affairs, leading to fight among themselves.

It’s best to be prepared for potential separations should a declan happen or when one gerbil in a bonded pair passes on. A reintroduction process is subsequently required, so you do not keep any gerbil alone.

Despite being fairly low maintenance pets, you should find a gerbil-savvy vet clinic in advance: Great for emergencies, and good-to-know for future vet visits. You also need to consider regular interaction with your gerbils and give them a simple health check to ensure problems are spotted and treated early.

Lastly, don’t give up on your gerbils, even if their health encounters some setback. Remember once you make the decision to bring them into your life, they have only you, as a guardian and friend to hold onto in this world, in their world. p

Ornamental Shrimps

A starter’s guide to keeping ornamental shrimps as a hobby.

E

very local fish shop that you go to, you will be able to find these tiny delightful creatures that colour up your tank. The hobby is a fast-growing one as more and more aquarists are giving shrimp keeping a try. Due to their adaptable nature, these invertebrates can live in almost any freshwater aquarium.

Ornamental freshwater shrimps, also called dwarf shrimps, grow up to a maximum of 2cm. They are a lot more sensitive than fishes, and prices can range from just $2 to $2,000 an invertebrate. Generally, there are three main families of ornamental shrimps here in Singapore: the Sulawesi shrimps, Neocaridina shrimps and Caridina shrimps.

Among these three types, the Caridina shrimps are the only ones that would require a chiller in Singapore as they require an environment temperature of 22 – 26 deg C. As the cost of installing a chiller may be prohibitive, a novice hobbyist can turn to either the Sulawesi or Neocaridina shrimp variety.

Sulawesi shrimps are very beautiful wild shrimps that come from Indonesia. They will add colour into any tank in which they are placed in. While they don’t require chilled water, they are considered one of the most sensitive dwarf shrimps in the market. However, they remain extremely popular these days because of their stunning colours.

Getting Started

The best choice for a beginner to start with is the Neocaridina shrimps. Suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists, it is one of the hardiest and easy to keep. These shrimps can survive in a wide range of parameters and are very adaptable to changes.

They thrive in our tropical climate, and in no time, they start breeding in the tank, forming a colony that works as a very effective cleaning crew too.

There are many different colours of Neocaridina, and as most hobbyists like to have every colour in their tank, the outcome is a “Skittle” tank because of the resemblance. Take note that different colours of Neocaridina, when crossbred, will return to their wild colouration (which is a dull shade of grey).

Without a doubt, the most important part of their appearance is their colour. In fact these Neocaridina shrimps are graded (and priced) in accordance to it. The grading can range from the deepest red through to paler ones with red spots.

It’s difficult to tell the males from the females in young shrimps, however as they grow older, the females will always be more colourful and larger.

As the females mature, they will develop a saddle in the stomach area. This is where she hold her eggs before they are fertilised.

The lifespan is about a year, or slightly more if tank conditions are right.

Habitat & Holding Tanks

When starting up a shrimp tank, it is vital to create a healthy environment for them first before introducing the shrimps into the tank.

This process takes roughly two weeks or more, and it’s called the cycling process. It is recommended that you introduced nitrifying bacteria into the tank to start the process. They serve to break down the harmful substances inside a tank and create new beneficial bacteria that can break down organic waste quickly. Organic waste is very poisonous to shrimps.

If you like to introduce some plants into your tank, having a thicker substrate layer allows the plants to take root in the soil. Once the cycling process is completed, some shrimps can be added to test the tank before adding more shrimps.

The habitat itself should emulate their natural conditions in the wild as closely as possible.

These invertebrates thrive in densely planted aquariums that have lots of great hiding crevices and moss. Driftwood can be added to the tank as the shrimps will nibble the algae from it.

The shrimps eat plant matter debris, and these can form a reasonable part of their diet. Moss is recommended in the aquarium as the shrimps can groom and hide within it. Java moss is a firm favourite for this purpose. Remember, when the

shrimp feels safest, they will present themselves with the brightest colouration.

These tiny creatures have a peaceful and nonaggressive disposition, and have no real means to defend themselves. As such, tank mates to consider for these creatures include: otocinclus, snails and mosquito rasboras.

Dietary Needs

Shrimps are scavengers and will eat pretty much anything they come across in a tank. As omnivores, they will gobble up both meat and plant matter.

If you are feeding commercial shrimp feed, make sure it does not break down easily. Bits of crumbs can seep underneath the substrate, forming ammonia pockets that can be harmful to the shrimps if not cleaned up.

Overfeeding is another common cause of death, so do not feed them more than they can eat in two hours. In established tanks where there is plenty of algae and biofilm, dwarf shrimps may not need extra food at all.

Besides fish or shrimp flake foods and pellets, dwarf shrimps will also eat blanched vegetables as well as algae wafers or pellets. If you plan to feed vegetables, make sure they are chemical free and blanched to soften the leaves. This makes it easier

for the shrimp to chow down on them. After an hour or so, it is a good habit to remove any leftovers.

Avoid adding too many chemicals that buffers your water. This is only good for a short period, as once it expires, it can crash the tank and cause the early demise of the shrimps. Pesticides and perfumes also should not be used near the tanks as they can kill the shrimps in an instant.

Plant fertilisers, when dosed extensively, is also detrimental to the health of the shrimps. Plants that work very well with shrimps include Anubias, Ferns and Bucephalandra.

Overall, it’s best to keep things simple and easy, and always make sure to cycle your tank before adding in the shrimps. Yes, it gets boring during the cycling process, but done correctly, you will be rewarded with a successful shrimp tank to admire. p

Science & Cats Date: Tue, 16 Mar 2021 Time: 10am – 11am

T

he March school holidays was the purrfect time to take part in the Pet Lovers Junior Club, Science & Cats virtual session.

Conducted online via a virtual workshop due to the Covid-19 phase 3 restrictions, some 42 children accompanied by their parents took time off to find out more about the care and adoption of felines.

The Cat Welfare Society (CWS) members were on hand with information aplenty to assist the young enthusiasts. Pet Lovers Centre took centre stage with a talk on Cat Facts: Behaviour by its pet care consultant while Cat Café Neko no Niwa provided the perfect background for the workshop. Neko no Niwa did a learning presentation on cats and an introduction to their resident cats too.

World Science Publishing Co (WSPC) collaborated in the event with storytelling and fun science facts. They offered a 10 percent discount to customers for books purchased at the event. In addition, book sales revenue for one month were also donated to CWS. All proceeds from the registration fees for the one-hour event were donated to CWS. CapitaLand was a partner in the event too.

ocal furniture start-up Minthe(d) launched a line of modern pet furniture – M.I.N.T Blocks: Pet Series on 24 March at Neko no Niwa among like-minded cat enthusiasts.

With an aim to support fellow pet owners in creating a home that is both fun and functional for their furry pals and themselves, the company presented a workshop at the launch event.

Titled “Understanding Cat Language through Interactive Workshops”, the event was attended by various influencers such as Adrian Ang, also known as Xiao Ming (co-founder of SGAG), Rachell Tan and Thenuga Vijakuma, President of the Cat Welfare Society.

Minthe(d) turned this product launch into an insightful sharing session by arranging cat-related workshops and dialogues hosted by Thenuga and the cafe’s owners.

Pet Series boasts a range of features to accommodate pets natural instincts. The set-ups are packed with components (sisal mats, sisal ropes, soft chenille cushions, toy balls, climbing holes etc.) to provide an all-in-one experience for scratching, jumping, climbing and lounging.

The Dempsey Project:

Furry Fun At Dog Day Afternoon

I

t was a case of cute-overload at The Dempsey Project’s inaugural Dog Day Afternoon on May 3 as hungry dog owners and their faithful furry friends descended on the restaurant and lifestyle space to experience their new pet initiative.

Offering a place for guests to hang out with their dogs away from the confines of their home, the afternoon provided a chance to meet other like-minded pet-lovers and garner expert advice about caring for their pooch from expert K9 trainer and author Eli Atias.

“It was a great turn-out and fascinating few hours spent with all breeds of dogs from Huskies to Labs, Poodles to Pomeranians,” says Eli, a veteran dog trainer who has worked within the military and security forces around the world, and author of the book Yes, You Can Train Your Dog. As Eli shared his advice with guests, dog owners from across Singapore chatted about their pets, showed off photos of them in their best doggy-outfits (like all certified embarrassing parents do!), and watched as their pooches nibbled on freshly prepared doggy nibbles and made friends with other willing canines (after a significantly large amount of sniffing!).
