Slovenia is a country in Central Europe that borders Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. Its population is around 2 million people. The capital of Slovenia is Ljubljana, home to 300,000 people. The second largest city is Maribor.

Triglav, located in the northwest, is the highest mountain in Slovenia, while the largest lake is Cerkniško jezero.

Traditional Slovenian dishes are Kranjska klobasa, Idrijski žlikrofi and Prekmurska gibanica. Famous Slovenians include Jurij Vega, a mathematician; Primož Trubar, the author of the first book in our language; France Prešern, a poet and the author of the Slovenian national anthem; Ivan Cankar, a writer and many others. In Slovenia, school starts around half past eight and finishes at around one o’clock. We usually have a snack in the morning and a lunch break before we go home. Our lessons are 45 minutes long and there is a 5-minute break after every one. Most of my schoolmates do sport in their free time. I do table tennis around 3 times a week. Popular sports in Slovenia are football, cycling, walking and running. At the weekend, people in Slovenia like spending time with their relatives, usually inviting them to a family lunch or dinner. I think Slovenia is a nice country to live in and I enjoy doing so.

My name’s Zala Silič. I’m a student at Oskar Kovačič primary school. I live here in Ljubljana. I go to school by bike, every day. In our free time, sometimes, me and my dad go to Portorož to go sailing on our sail-boat. I love the sea, but I find it a bit scary when it gets all dark and you can’t even see your feet. I also like to go horse riding every week. It’s a bit stressful but I can manage it. Me and my family also love exploring our beautiful country, Slovenia.
