Street Pastors Pete Broom and Sheena Graham, co co-ordinators of Fair Oak and Horton Heath Street Pastors, are delighted to announce their areas second anniversary on 8th February 2010. On February 8th 2008, 18 newly qualified Street Pastors hit the streets of Fair Oak and Horton Heath. A further 6 trainees qualified in October 2009 making a pool of 24 fully trained individuals covering Fair Oak and Horton Heath every Friday night, 8pm to 1am, come rain or shine, frost or snow. During the two years, two Street Pastors have retired, one due to ill health and one transferred to the Eastleigh initiative. We have 22 Street Pastors in our area. The commitment of the Street Pastors to the work of helping to make the streets in our community a safer and kinder place to be, is reflected in the fact that a team were out both years on Christmas and New Years Eve. Over the last two years Street Pastors have spoken to 4748 people with 104 tours of duty being completed and all by just 24 volunteers ranging in ages from 25 to 68 years old. Over the last two years there has been a 37% drop in crime compared to the year prior to the Street Pastors being launched and this is partly attributed to the success of the “semi-rural” trinity which has been formed in the Fair Oak and Horton Heath area between the Parish Council, Police and the local Churches working together with the Youth Service. Chief Inspector Boyles says, “I have no doubt that this success is down to the joint working of all parties in the area, but I remain convinced that the Street Pastors have played a key role in this reduction. I am thankful for their continued commitment and support they show to the community.” The news of new local areas coming on board brings with it great encouragement as the villages of West End, Hedge End, Botley, Chandler‟s Ford and Bishopstoke will soon have teams of their own on the streets. A new training session began on 6th March, 2010 and 50 trainees selected from the above areas are attending the 12 week long course. All our trainees are asked to complete an in depth personal checking process and are selected from local churches. The gospel is behind everything we do but it is not at the forefront of what we say. For more information email Sheena and Pete at fairoak@streetpastors.org.uk or phone 07970 543098. We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Parish Council, the Police and the Youth Services for their valued input in to this efficient and effective partnership Positive Training for Canines is a friendly training school that only uses kind, effective methods to help teach your dog relevant commands for every day life. Our classes are suitable for Puppies between 10 and 20 weeks (once they have received their second vaccination), 1 to 1 training for adult and rescue dogs We train at Colden Common Community Centre at 7.45pm on Tuesday Evenings. BISHOPSTOKE PARISH COUNCIL
Appointment of Assistant Clerk Councillors are very pleased to announce the part-time appointment of Mrs Cheryl Taylor as the assistant clerk to Bishopstoke Parish Council. Mrs Taylor will open the temporary parish office in the Methodist Church from 11.00am to 1.00pm each Wednesday starting 7 April 2010 at which staff, Councillors and the PCSO, when available, will be pleased to meet with you and discuss matters of common interest. She will also become the first point of contact for management of the allotments and the Cemetery when the transfer of responsibility from the Borough to the Parish Council has been concluded. A contact telephone number will be published soon. Asset transfer The effective date for the transfer of ownership and management responsibility for the allotments, Cemetery and the Old St Mary’s Churchyard is 1 April 2010 subject to the legal complexities being concluded satisfactorily. After a reasonable period of time, Councillors will begin negotiations with the Borough to transfer other assets, including the remaining bus stops, some open spaces and play areas, to take effect on 1 April 2011. This is all part of the on-going plan to place responsibility for communal assets and facilities in the community where they are located. Grants to community organisations At their recent meeting, Councillors approved a request from the Bishopstoke Memorial Hall for £1500 to assist the management committee in meeting the expense of upgrading the Hall’s fire and security systems in line with the recommendations made during a recent safety and security review. Website upgraded After much effort by a group of Councillors and the Webmaster, the Parish Council website has been redesigned and upgraded and is now available on-line. The new site is more informative with many links to external organisations enabling direct access to their information and it is also more user-friendly. Why not take a look? Further ideas and comments are always welcome. Annual Parish Assembly A date for your diary. The Annual Parish Assembly will be held in the Methodist Church, Sedgwick Road at 7.30 pm on Tuesday 11 May 2010. This is your opportunity as an elector of the Parish to speak and vote on matters of community interest. It also acts as a sounding board for the Parish Council on local matters and enables the Chairman of the Council to report on Council activities over the past year and outline the hopes and aspirations of the Council for the next. This year we shall also have guest speaker on a topical matter. We look forward to seeing you there. Fairtrade in Eastleigh Borough Campaign The Parish Council has become a group member of the Fairtrade in Eastleigh Borough Campaign. The campaign encourages the purchase of Fairtrade branded goods which are quality goods from producers in the developing world who are guaranteed a fair price for their products. In this way, the producers, their families and their local communities benefit through better health, social, educational and environmental conditions. The campaign is always looking for more support and strives to promote the concept and raise awareness in general. Why not find out more from www.fairtradeineastleighborough.org or join the campaign yourselves? The next meeting of the full Parish Council will be on Tuesday 27 April 2010 at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church Hall, Sedgwick Road, Bishopstoke. The Planning Committee meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 7.00pm and the Finance and General Purposes Committee meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm. All meetings of the Parish Council and its Committees are open to the public. TELL SOMEONE ABOUT CRIME!
Police are warning motorists to be careful when selling cars following the thefts of several vehicles over the past month. Vehicles being offered for sale in a newspaper or magazine, and often the internet, can attract people from far and wide to view the car. However, some come with the intention of taking the car without paying. In one incident, whilst the would-be buyer was being shown round the car, he jumped into the driver’s seat, locked the doors and sped off. In another, during a test drive, the owner and would-be buyer got out at a petrol station to inspect the engine under brighter lights when the thief again jumped in and drove away, and in a third incident, after the test drive and the owner was making a cup of coffee for the man who said he would buy the car, he claimed he had left his phone in the vehicle during the test drive. He then took the owner’s keys supposedly to recover his phone, but drove off with her car. Bear in mind that an insurance company is unlikely to pay out if a car is stolen in this way. If you are selling your vehicle, never let the potential purchaser have the keys unless you are also in the vehicle. If you drive first on a test drive, take the keys out of the ignition until everyone is back in the car and then pass them over. If you are buying a car, try to avoid meeting anyone in a car park, or service station. It is a potentially safer purchase to see the owner at their home, where the registration document should match up, and the service history is likely to be from a local garage. You also know where the seller is if there is a problem. Remember, don’t release the vehicle until cleared funds have been received. A cheque should be cleared first, and make sure that a bankers’ draft is genuine – a draft may be guaranteed funds, but not if the draft is fraudulent or stolen! Remember to always keep your keys safe. Even a basic car is virtually impossible to steal without the keys to disarm the alarm and immobiliser, so never leave your keys lying around on a bar, or your desk. If you’ve information about any crime, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111, or log on to www.mostwanted-uk.org Your call is free, no one will know you called and you may earn a cash reward.

Can you help us please? Naomi House children’s hospice and jacksplace@naomihouse, a new hospice for teenagers and young people, are in Sutton Scotney near Winchester. We rely on the support of the community to help raise over £4 million every year to enable us to provide respite, end of life and bereavement support to life limited children, teenagers and young adults from across central Southern England. Description of ETNet and Community Farm Project, Highbridge Farm Eastleigh Transition Network (ETNet) is a group of local people who are taking practical actions on climate change, oil depletion, and environmental damage. These issues are affecting the poorest people of the world first, and will affect more and more people. We are taking positive steps to help rebuild our sense of community, and improve our local communities' resilience to cope with the challenges by learning and sharing skills to help us grow our own food and produce energy locally. We encourage and protect wildlife in the area - they are essential for natural processes we depend on to flourish. To reduce the cost of food by reducing 'food miles', we aim to increase the abundance and availability of local fresh food in Eastleigh Borough. We are encouraging residents to grow food in their own and friendsâ€&#x; gardens, and in local allotments. We also plan to grow some of our own food in a field at Highbridge Farm that the farmer has offered for a Community Farm Project - and to enable other people to join in the scheme. We need to fence off the growing area at the farm from rabbits before we sow seeds and grow plug plants! We are hoping to create a strawbale or other sustainably built community building at the farm, for people to wash their hands, as a place to shelter and rest, and to make and drink cups of tea!
We also need to construct some toilet accommodation at the farm (possibly
compost toilets, if the site is suitable). There is a woodland area at the farm that has possibilities for locally sourced fuels and wood products, and the remains of an orchard that could be replanted as an orchard or as agroforestry – in either case bees could also be kept in this area eventually. We are very happy for you to contact us if you are interested in any of the ideas. We look forward to hearing from you. The Fret Connexxion
Baking More Than A Dozen There are few guitarists who match the diversity, dexterity and experience of Duck Baker. Growing up in Richmond Virginia in the 1950s and playing in the usual teenage rock and roll bands of the time he developed a life-time interest in acoustic blues after moving to San Francisco in the early seventies. His first recordings for Kicking Mule Records showcased an eclectic mix of styles which he perfected from 1975 to 1980. Blues of course, but also ragtime, bluegrass and jazz played in finger-style but unusually for a nonclassical player, often on nylon strung guitars. In recent years he has developed a strong interest in free jazz and has two CDs on release shortly on the Mighty Quinn record label. Everything That Rises Must Change and also The Waltz Lesson recorded with London based clarinetist Alex Ward and bass-player Joe Williamson. Free jazz is not appealing to everyone so listeners who are put off by very modern music may wish to approach these with caution! The album is rounded with more mainstream pieces by John Coltrane and Theolonius Monk among other jazz greats. This trio reflects the Duck Baker artistry of the past few years since his move to London. Returning to his earlier roots and perhaps of more interest to the general listener is his new solo album on the Les Cousins label, The Roots And Branches Of American Music. Under the guise of this rather documentary title you will find a delightful mixed collection of blues, ragtime, gospel and swing. This is Duck Baker at his best with unorthodox chord voicings and subtle couterpoint taking the place of mere dry technical displays of guitar technique. It is this most comprehensive of repertoires which he will be expo on Sunday May 2 nd in concert at The Picture House in Southampton Ocean Village. Tickets are available from www.picturehouses.co.uk or 0871 704 2060. Enjoy. Andi Cee celebrates the art guitar every Wednesday 8 – 10 pm when he presents The Fret Connexxion on Skyline 102.5 FM and on-line at www.skyline.fm. You can contact him with requests, playlist ideas or local gigs and bands at andi.c@skyline.fm

St Mary’s & St Paul’s, Bishopstoke Sunday Services St Paul’s, Fair Oak Road 9.30 am St Mary’s, Church Road 11 am In Bishopstoke, there are two Church of England buildings, but we think of ourselves as one Christian family – because we are! Each week there is at least one service that is appropriate for children, or has children‟s Christian activities. We also have various mid-week activities, including a toddler group and groups that meet for friendship, prayer and to look at the Bible together. We are always happy to hear from people who would like to be prayed for or ask anything about Christianity, and we run the Alpha Course together with other churches.
