DEAR ALL,

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you and your families! We are about to complete the 15th season since the Tollman family took over Uniworld, and it is amazing to see how much has changed in all those years. Having been accredited again by Investors in People with a silver award is a nice recognition for the improvements we are making in our people practices, and I would like to thank all for your participation.

Some other award we have received very recently are the Cruise Critics editor choice awards, in which we have won the categories of “Best River Cruise Line”, “Best for Luxury”, “Best Cabins” and “Best Ship Refurbishment” with the S.S. Bon Voyage. This is an amazing achievement, so congratulations to all.

For the next important award, we would like your participation again: Voting for Travel + Leisure’s 2020 World’s Best Awards is now open:

tlworldsbest.com/vote I kindly ask that you please take a moment to vote AND share with others that can vote. Both Uniworld and U were nominated this year, as were several of the TTC’s guided vacations and boutique hotels. Voting will be open until the beginning of March 2020.

As usual I am sharing Brett Tollman’s latest video update that can be viewed on the following link: Brett’s November video update, and below a graph showing the booking development with regards to the number of passengers as it is right now. In 2019 we will end up with a record number of passengers booked, and in 2020 we are now slightly below last year but still on track.

MESSAGE FROM ELLEN Dear Team Uniworld, The regular 2019 season has come to an end and even with a few mishaps the year was a great success! The team in the United States is preparing for Thanksgiving which will take place this Thursday. It’s a day for remembering what you are thankful for, spending quality time with friends and loved ones and eating lots of great food! I am personally looking forward to have a house full of people eating, drinking, laughing and just taking a few moments to relax. I want you to know that in addition to my family, good health and the support of our parent company, The Travel Corporation, I am thankful for all of you, what you do each day and the passion you bring to your roles – it’s what sets Uniworld apart and makes us THE BEST! Please remember this quote by Charles Dickens,

“Reflect upon your present blessings, of which every man has plenty; not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.” Stay safe, Have fun! Warmest regards, Ellen

SUSTAINABLE U What is this? A mixed group of different positions, Office, Travelling and Ship who are working together, step by step, to make ourselves, our ships, our office, our tours, our transportation and our teams more and more sustainable. We have regular calls, and are working on different steps across hotel, nautical, program and office departments. Why? The Travel Corporation, and therefore Uniworld and U River Cruises, have set certain goals which we are aiming to achieve: By 2022 we aim to eliminate all unnecessary single use plastics across our company.

- By 2050 we aim to be carbon neutral Is this why we are doing it? No – we are doing it to make sure we do our bit to leave behind a planet where generations to come can enjoy the beauty which we have been so fortunate to enjoy until now – for our planet, people and for wildlife. So in other words, because we genuinely care, and we know that every step taken can make a difference.

What is in the works so far?     

Monitoring the age and condition of transportation we use Contacting Hotel and Nautical vendors and suppliers for cooperation and support in working together with us in eliminating unnecessary single use items and packaging Investigating future cultural and social implementations fleetwide Implementing some new program element/generating awareness for our guests Investigating possible implementations into ships in future rebuilds/new builds

Inventory lists of all single use items in operation and to decide “Remove, Replace or Reuse”      

Printed items inventory and reassessing what is actually unnecessary or avoidable Some eliminations already happened in 2019 – did you notice? (Vox earpiece packaging, petit fours doilies, beard covers in galley to name a few) Social media postings New and more environmentally friendly water bottles for our guests Evaluating a new measuring system for wastes Sampling and testing certain products or processes during Christmas cruises and into 2020

This list above is only some of the things currently in progress, and we are very much at the beginning of this journey, but we are in it for the long haul! So far we have had many wonderful ideas put forward, collected from across our ships and office teams. Don’t stop bringing these ideas and comments – we want this to be an entire team effort, and need everyone’s involvement in this, so anytime you have an idea, or perhaps notice something which could be done differently, and with less impact on our world – let us know! Please feel free to contact anyone within Sustainable U – we are happy to hear from you and grateful for every single input.

So don’t be shy, let’s do this together! Do you have a great idea or would you like to be involved?

STRETCH MORE – LAST MORE Part I Did you know that regular stretching is just as important as regular exercise? Helps improve flexibility, range of motion and coordination. Stretching assists in correct posture by lengthening tight and tired muscles that pull areas of the body out of alignment. Reduce soreness Increase blood and nutrient supply to muscles, reducing muscle soreness especially after traveling and exercise. Calm the mind and energies the body A ten-minute stretching routine can have great health benefits by providing a mental break and physically releasing tension. Reduces the risk of injuries Especially for those who are more active. Aids sleep Because of all of the health benefits mentioned above, stretching helps you sleep better. Balance In this position make sure to relax and breathe deeply for two minutes Lower back, Hamstring and Gluts Stretch One leg at 45degree angle, grab the opposite leg around the knee and pull towards you. Stretch both legs. Lower back, Hamstring Stretch Hug the knee to the chest. This exercise helps relieve tension from the lower back. Optional: rock forwards and backwards or side to side

Hip and Gluts Stretch Push the knee towards the wall. This stretch helps to relieve tension in the lower back and in the hip flexors whilst opening the hips. Advance Gluts and Lower Back Stretch Interlock your fingers around the left knee and pull towards you. Hold, release and then swap legs. Gluteal and Lumbar Rotation Stretches and oxygenates the spine, stretches the lower back and the gluts.

CM’S AND U-HOSTS CORNER BY ANTHONY AND DIANA PLASTIC FISHING Last Sunday our Program Services department organised a special day out as part of their annual Kick After meeting in the Netherlands. As most of you already know how important sustainability is to the company, it should come as no surprise that an appropriate event was chosen. What better idea than to go and get personally involved in cleaning up plastic and other junk out of the canals in Amsterdam! The company that was chosen to facilitate this is called Plastic Whale. Plastic Whale is a movement of people who love doing, creating and making progress. Stop Talking. Let’s start doing is their motto, and shows the urgency to take action and the belief in the positive power of doing together. Marius Smit had the idea to start this company in 2011 after traveling to Asia and seeing how bad plastic pollution in the oceans has become. In 2014 they built their first boat out of recycled plastic from Amsterdam’s canals. Today they are proud to have a small fleet of plastic boats. They stated doing corporate team building with Starbucks Coffee and today they are a thriving company. There are now nine boats in Amsterdam and 2 in Rotterdam.

Over 18000 people went plastic fishing in 2018. Cruise Managers, Program services and U-hosts were up for the challenge and it was really lots of fun. Not only did we fish out several bags of junk, including glass bottles and even some things we had better not mention, but we had tremendous fun sightseeing. It was also very heartwarming to get praise from people on the shore and in other boats who saw what we were doing. It was an inspiring experience and really showed us what can be done if you just do it. We are hoping that this is something other departments will also do and hopefully we can also present it to our guests.

Heres hoping to see you at Plastic Whale !

Regards, Anthony

XMAS MARKETS BY CM RIK It is that time of the year again! Christmas markets time, the best way to get in the Christmas mood! Did you know that the very first Christmas market took place all the way back in 1298? Vienna is the lucky town where the December market first saw the light. Other history books write that Dresden's Striezelmarkt was first held in 1434 and is considered the first genuine Christmas market, as earlier markets were rather "December markets". Early mentions of these "December markets" can be found in Vienna (1298) Munich (1310), Bautzen (1384), and Frankfurt (1393). It is since ancient times that these markets celebrated the four weeks of Advent preceding Christmas, creating anticipation and longing for the feast to come. Markets are characterized by numerous stalls selling food, handmade items and most of all decorations of any kind. They became more and more popular starting new traditions in places where Christmas markets where never held before. SALZBURG, AUSTRIA Dates: November 22 to December 26, 2019 Best for: Christmas carols and ancient traditions The pretty hometown of Mozart and The Sound of Music comes into its own at Christmas, with snow-sprinkled renditions of ‘Silent Night’ (the carol was written and first performed nearby) and market stalls that look much as they did when they were first set up way back in the 15th century. The focus here is on quality over quantity, so expect hand-knitted socks rather than novelty candles for stocking fillers at this winter wonderland. For optimum Christmas cheer, join the free daily concerts at 5pm in front of the cathedral, or belt out carols at the Tuesday sing-alongs (6pm-8pm). STRASBOURG, FRANCE Dates: From November 22 to December 30, 2019
Best for: Storybook scenery and sweets France’s ‘Capital of Christmas’ looks like a real-life nativity scene at this time of year. You’ll find 300 traditional market stalls crowding the city’s central squares, doing a strong line in hand-painted wooden Christmas decorations. Seek out the Market of the Invincible Small Producers of Alsace for sausages and almondy, fruity, brioche-like kugelhopf. Travellers’ tip: The main areas of the market – Place Broglie and the square in front of the cathedral – are busiest in the evenings and weekends, so try to visit these first if you want to focus on your Christmas shopping without any toe-stepping (stalls open at 10am). BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA Dates: November 23 to December 22 Best for: wooden toys and foodie treats, Christmas in the Slovakian capital is a time of childlike wonder. Fairy lights are draped around Christmas trees, while market stalls sell traditional wooden toys and handsome Christmas decorations. Foodie treats include pancakes, sausages and luscious cakes. As it can become deliciously cold in this part of central Europe, there are plenty of stalls selling warming mulled wine and punch, which take the chill off the evening. Wanting to work off the pancakes and sausages in the open air? You’ll find a spin on an ice rink beneath the gleaming Christmas lights works wonders. Travellers’ tip: To see the patchwork colours of the market stalls spread below in the main square walk to the top of the Old Town Hall. VIENNA, AUSTRIA Dates: November 15 to December 26, 2019 Best for: skating rinks and traditional toys. Come Yuletide and Vienna sparkles with fairy lights. A myriad of Christmas markets spread out along the narrow streets of the old town, offering stalls overflowing with traditional wooden toys and artisanal handicrafts such as handmade soaps. Invigorate with steaming mugs of mulled wine while the chill of the open air is warmed by the bracing aroma of roasted chestnuts and freshly-baked pretzels. Further fun can be had in the square in front of the City Hall, home to the popular ‘Vienna Christmas Dream’, where the swish of skates rises from the skating rink and a ferris wheel draws in both young and old.

EGGNOG FACTS OF A CLASSICAL HOLIDAY DRINK BY LAURENTIA It's December. The Holiday Season is upon us and it´s time to Celebrate! No matter the celebration, St. Nicholas, Christmas Eve, New Year, Bathtub Party Day (5th of December), Lost and Found Day (13th of December), Chocolate-covered Anything Day (16th of December) or Ugly Christmas Sweater Day (20th of December), we can always indulge ourselves a wicked Eggnog party as December is the National Eggnog Month.

Here are some facts to know when you hold an eggnog drink in your hand It’s named after a mug. The word nog comes from noggin, which is a small wooden mug typically used to drink ale. British Christmas Aristocracy roots. In the winter, the wealthy would drink warm milk and egg beverages seasoned with pricey spices such as ground nutmeg and cinnamon and expensive liquors like brandy and sherry to keep it from spoiling. When the drink passed to America, rum was used. It caused a riot. Christmas 1826 at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY, was not a peaceful one. It started with a party, fueled by eggnog spiked with whiskey that cadets smuggled into the academy. It ended with broken windows, gunshots, one knocked-out lieutenant and lots of damaged property. Twenty cadets were court-martialed, and the event was thereafter known as the Eggnog Riot. It can also be called a Hell’s Angel. In the 1932 book Cold Comfort Farm, the protagonist whips up a Hell’s Angel: 1 egg, 2 ounces of brandy, 1 teaspoon of cream and some ice in a jam jar, shaken. George Washington served it. According to kitchen records from Mount Vernon, President George Washington used to serve an ultra-boozy eggnog to guests. His version included whiskey, rye, rum and sherry. It cures sore throats. At least, an old Russian/Yiddish version of the drink purportedly does. Kogel mogel is made with egg yolks, sugar and rum. It’s served hot and traditionally used as a home remedy for sore throats.

Eggnog Martini Get into the true spirit of December Holidays with a creamy and deliciously almond flavored martini cocktail. Shake equal quantities of Vanilla Vodka, Amaretto and Eggnog liquor, serve it in a chilled martini glass garnished with Nutmeg sprinkles and a cinnamon stick.

A MESSAGE FROM SUZANA DEAR COLLEAGUES, You have all heard off “Change is the only constant thing in this world.” Just like seasons, life and people changes too. As you may know, recently I have decided to bring a change into my life, unpack my luggage and return to my home country Croatia. Since then, travelling around, I still had no chance to say goodbye to each one of you in person. December will be my last working month for Uniworld, and I wish to use this opportunity to thank you all for the great time that we have shared. When joining Uniworld, I would never think that it would turn out to be a 10-year-journey. Exciting 10 years filled with wonderful people, constant learning, fun and laughter, personal and professional growth. Last three years working close with the entire Front Desk team, I have enjoyed the most; your passion and dedication for hospitality and personal development kept me constantly motivated, and I will miss so much our times spent together at the Kick Offs. Working for Uniworld has been a truly exceptional experience, however, another job opportunity has come up and I decided to move on. I`ve learned so much working with each and every one of you, and I am so blessed knowing that many of you became more than colleagues. I look forward to keeping in contact and hearing your updates about work, life, whatever..! Please don’t hesitate to get in touch should you need anything or want to catch up. MEET HENDRIK (RIK) THIRIET HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?

After my apprenticeship as sailor I left the company to fulfill my mandatory service in the Swiss army. Almost one year, I protected Switzerland as good as possible and nothing happenedð&#x;˜‰ Then I stayed in my hometown Basel and made my way to a captain for the local day passenger ships. After 5 years I sailed through Basel enough often so I started looking for a new challenge and found a perfect opportunity in Rheinfelden. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO JOIN UNIWORLD?

I decided to join Uniworld again because I really liked the spirit and the mentality in the company once I was an apprentice on the ship. And I think the spirit became even better over the years. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?

I love to do all kind of sports, especially racket sports like squash and badminton or just simply go for a run. Due to my course of study, I also have to study a lot in my free time. ANY MESSAGE FOR THE SHIPS?

I’m very excited to work with all old colleagues again and looking forward to meet the colleagues I don’t know yet. And I want to say thank you for the warm welcome everybody gave me.

On the 7th of November after having some productive meetings with our Corporates, Seniors, Directors & Office Team we celebrated our End of Season event, although the season is only almost over. In a cheerful mood we had an Old Timer tram ride through illuminated Basel followed by Dinner in a traditional Basler restaurant called Loewenzorn. It was again a great opportunity to mingle casually with our corporate team and get to know colleagues we don’t see every day.

We wish you all a relaxing end of season break and see you strong, healthy and happy next year!
