Kayla Talor jazz

Kayla Taylor is one woman who knows how to ock0.Literally! She’s a professional who can sing any genre of music from any decade and make you want to get up and dance. In an interview with Performing Artists Magazine Kayla shares her outgoing personality and offers advice to new singers.

16

How did you get started? I’ve always sang. Even as a little baby my mother says I was always humming or “cooing”. When I was about 2 or 3 I started banging around on my Grandmother’s piano when we visited her. I started formal training on the piano when I was six. My Grandparents bought a groovy upright piano for me and I was hooked and addicted. I would play for hours. If I was awake and at home – I was at the piano. I loved it. Other Moms had to tell their kids to practice and my Mom jokes that she had to tell me to stop practicing because I would play non-stop. I started singing in choirs at school and church and I remember singing with my Girl Scout Troop at our meetings and camps. I never sang in public, though until 7th grade after that it was hard to keep me from singing. I love everything that goes along with it, too.

What inspires you? In spite of the fact that I’m a singer – I’m really more of a visual person than an audial person – so anything that I can look at that is colorful is usually what gives me inspiration. I don’t sew but find myself roaming through fabric stores looking at colors and textures. I roam through garden shops looking at different plants. My niece, Kara, she’s a big inspiration because she is so colorful, herself. I mean, the kid is never “off” and she just seems to love every minute of the day. Even when she’s sad – she just seems to be really passionate about the sadness and her ability to embrace the moment – it just really inspires me.

What do you do to stay in shape? 4-5 times a week I walk 3-4 miles with my neighbor, Fern. I also started doing push-ups (real ones – not the bent knee version) and 100 situps and a lot of stretching. I’ve got a groovy callanetics video that would have me looking like Madonna in no time – but I just haven’t gotten the lead out of my ass to add that into my daily deal.

Any audition don’ts? Yep and here they are: no gum chewing, no “passing gas”, no bad attitudes. Of course, be yourself unless any of the other things mentioned are “yourself” then you’ll have to edit your behavior! A hand shake should be firm and confidant – not “fishy” or “limp wristed”. YES, even girls need a firm handshake. And by the way, YOU, have an awesome handshake. It says a lot about someone and their confidence level. OH – no matter what – do not forget to send the thank you note. As cheesy as that may sound – you really should thank the auditioners for taking their time to meet with you and/or to audition you.

Who has most influenced you?

music in the house. My Mom is a huge Elvis fan. My Dad was always singing or humming something. He loved “Me and Bobby McGee”. Dad also taught me a lot about business. My Mom insisted that I take typing and that was great advice since I did time as a secretary for about 16 years prior to being a full time vocalist. Scott taught me the glory and beauty of “Led Zepplin” and Bob Dylan. Scott loved the original rock stuff we did with One Without (our old rock band) but at home, I was always walking around the house singing jazz and standards to him He kept telling me that I should be singing jazz & standards. When Steven (guitarist and biz partner for 14 years) and I decided to start a jazz combo – Scott (hubby) was thrilled.

Do you have any advice for aspiring singers? Be ready for hard work. DO GOOD IN SCHOOL – inspite of what you might think – IT IS important. Understand marketing and business. Always be gracious to the audience, the staff and to the people who have hired you . . . . everyone counts – no one is unimportant. If you are working with a sound guy who is just a jerk – just be grateful that you don’t have to be that way and be nice to him or her no matter what. Be real. Don’t be fake. If something doesn’t feel right – then don’t

My parents and my husband, Scott. My parents always played 17

do it. I’m not saying don’t take risks – not at all – being nervous is way different from that gut feeling thatsomething is wrong. PAY ATTENTION to your instincts. Don’t be naïve. No matter how great you think you are – GET A VOICE COACH and study voice. You don’t have to do it forever – just do it every now and then to keep your chops fresh!

What’s something you never leave home without? Lipbalm and gum.

Do you have a hidden talent? Gardening. I love to grow things – flowers mainly, but usually I have tomatoes in the Summer, too.

What do you love? I love making others happy. I love being there. I love being here in the moment. I love that I am smoke free. I love my family. I love my friends. I love my husband. I love making people think in a way they might normally not think. And on an extrememly superficial note . . . . I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE . . . . . Chocolate.

Do you ever / did you ever consider leaving the world of music? I’ve thought about it – but it’s not an option. It’s like asking me to choose whether I would like to continue to breathe or not.

Any recording studio suggestions? Don’t walk in unless you know what you want. Be respectful of everyone and stay focused. Don’t take a bunch of calls on your cell phone. Focus. Sing on PITCH. Do not ever assume that they can “fix it in the mix”. “They” really can’t. Drink water – lots of it. Don’t smoke – it really is horrible for you and it really doesn’t create a sexy, sultry sound – it just creates a heavy, smoker sound. Do it right the first time – or as close to the first time as possible. It really does make sense to hire a producer and if you can hire a vocal coach/producer to be there, too. It just makes sense. Do not go to someone who specializes in Metal if you are trying to cut a jazz album. It might be interesting but recording & engineering is an art. If you want Monet – buy Monet. Don’t buy DaVinci if you want Monet.

How can the public purchase your music? www.kaylataylorjazz.com or www. cdbaby.com/kaylataylorjazz (for the jazz album) for the pop/acoustic/original

18

material album: www.cdbaby. com/taoks

What record company are you with? SmartyKat Records – who was recently purchased by SmartyKat Entertainment, LLC. I’m sure you’ve heard of them. They’re huge and doing all kinds of great things (wink, wink)!

What marketing advice would you give singers who are trying to get their music out to the public? Hire someone to create a great website. And if you are putting out a traditional CD – please hire a graphic artist so that your packaging looks awesome. People really do judge a product by it’s packaging. Not all people – but a lot of them. If it looks homemade – 9 times out of 10 – they won’t pay $15 for it. Take the time to sign up on www.cdbaby. com – they are a tremendous marketing and music resource geared towards the independent artists. The website at CDBaby is a total no brainer and easy to maneuver through and understand. Most of all – be nice and enjoy the ride. Try not to take yourself too serious. I lived there before (in Seriousville, USA) and it was exhausting and it made me miserable. Life is too short. Smell the flowers TODAY. Don’t wait until tomorrow.

What’s next for you?

to anyone interested in the world of dance. Selected individuals will have the chance to take a minimum of 3 classes per week and experience the daily tasks of running a dance studio.

Who knows? I’m happy with where I am right now. It’s a beautiful thing to be happy with “this” moment. I’m not saying I’m always happy – but right this second – I am. The most important thing for me is to keep learning and growing. I want to learn a few foreign languages. I want to learn more music theory. I want to learn to sew. I want to find out more about who I am and “why” I am..
