Mine was breast cancer in October, 2009. More than half a million dollars has been raised in Gananoque over the years for cancer research. And there’s more to come. “This past year we’ve lost two very important people

very well here as a good friend to everybody in town, and just recently Jim Bolt passed away from cancer as well. He did so much for Terry, gave of his time for football, and was an extraordinary member of the community. It’s really, really important that we get out there and find a cure, raise as much money as we can to make this stop. We don’t want to lose any more people to this horrible, horrible disease. “I did not want to stand in front of a crowd of people and tell them that I had cancer, said DeWolf. “That is behind me and that’s where I wanted it to stay. But I felt it would be selfish of me to not help promote the Terry Fox Run that I had been working with for so many years. I told Bunny I would do it, and a couple of days later I received my shirt and a beautiful thank you from the Terry Fox organization. Part of it read, ‘Thank you for

your generosity of spirit. Your willingness to identify yourself as someone who has benefitted from the funds raised by Terry Fox is the most powerful and optimistic message we can send to those to show that their support will bring an end to cancer.’ “It was then that I knew what my role was – not to tell people that I had cancer, but to tell people that I’d survived thanks to the research made possible by Terry Fox. “I want to thank everyone for being here, said Randall. “It’s important to let everyone know that your dollars really are helping. Every time cancer research lets another patient go into remission, it’s because of the generous donations of everyone out there. To continue to contribute to the cause, please contact Bunny Randall at 613-382-2591 or go to www.terryfox.org.

and our relationship with the past. Cost for the evening is $15. Friday Oct. 12 is the festival’s “1812 Evening held at Brockville Collegiate Institute’s auditorium beginning at 7 p.m. The two authors scheduled to appear approach the history of the war from two vastly different perspectives. James Laxer’s Tecumseh and Brock is a study of the unlikely friendship between the charismatic Shawnee war chief and leader of the native confederacy and the aristocratic defender of Canada and protector of the British Crown. Dr. David Butters provides a local perspective in his recently released The Insolent Enemy. This book uses a historical fiction approach to deal with the military career of Captain Benjamin Forsyth, who led the American raids on Gananoque in 1812 and
