Curling Hall of Fame’s Colleen Jones hopes magic returns in Kemptville this weekend By JIM DOLAN

EMC Sports – The Russians are coming to Kemptville but so is Canadian Curling Hall of Famer Colleen Jones. Jones reunited with Mary-Anne Arsenault and Kim Kelly earlier this year. Arsenault played in the event last year, but this year should be special for local fans. The young Russian team skipped by Victoria Moiseeva opens the preliminary round of the 24 team Royal LePage

OVCA Women’s Fall Classic at the North Grenville Curling Club in Kemptville on Thursday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. against Ottawa’s Rhonda Varnes. Just how young are the Russian players? Two of the players Aleksandra Saitova and Alina Kovaleva are only 20 and 19, Moiseeva and Galina Arsenkina are 21, and Ekaterina Antonova is 22. If experience wins out over youth this weekend, Colleen Jones should be in the hunt for the first place prize of $5,000

and the Fall Classic shield come Sunday. Jones has represented Nova Scotia at 20 Scott Tournament of Hearts, winning six Canadian Women’s championships. She won her last five Scotties and two world championships, with Arsenault, Kelly and Nancy Delahunt. However, the Russian skip, the event’s 2008 champion Rachel Homan and a number of other young skips in the Classic might be quick to point out that Jones was only 22 when she won her

first Canadian championship. Why did these legendary curlers, Arsenault, Kelly and Jones reunite? Like the young Russian team, they want a shot at qualifying for the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. In the words of Arsenault: “It is the one thing we haven’t put on our resume.” It also didn’t hurt that Arsenault was “sick of losing.” She didn’t have to look far to add the missing weapon to the team’s arsenal. When Kim Kelly says that you are like “magic” and

Mary-Anne Arsenault says you have “no fear” and you (Jones) comment that “we’ve never lost when we’ve curled together,” it only makes sense to reunite. Not too many people, especially from small towns, ever get the chance to say that they saw a Hall of Fame athlete and one of the greatest curling teams in the world, play in their own backyard. I am proud that Colleen Jones, Mary-Anne Arsenault and Kim Kelly along with Jennifer Baxter will be at my club in my hometown this weekend. I hope that the “magic” is still

there and I will be front row center when they play their first game at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1 against another great team from Canada, Quebec’s Allison Ross. The North Grenville Curling Club is located at the old hockey rink on Reuben Crescent in town, so put on some extra warm clothing, make up some signs and sit in the bleachers to cheer on your favourite teams. A modest adult admission is charged – $10 for an event pass or $5 for a day pass. The complete list of teams and games can be viewed at classic.ovca.com. 1101.R0011711688
