Citizens invited to pitch-in’ John Carter John.carter@metroland.com

EMC news – With spring weather finally arriving, the Town of Arnprior is urging its residents to ‘pitch in’ and clean up their neighbourhoods. The town is holding its annual spring pitch-in day this Saturday, May 4. All residents are encouraged to gather at Robert Simpson Park at 9 a.m. to receive garbage bags for a two-hour clean-up blitz around town. As well as picking up litter at Robert Simpson Park, citizens are welcome to trek through their own neighbourhoods in search of unsightly trash. There will also be teams cleaning up at such public areas as Veterans, Caruso and Legion parks. Who knows what people might find. One of the pitch-in participants in Fitzroy Harbour Saturday found one of the new $100 bills. The Arnprior effort is a belated marking of national Pitch-in Week (April 21-27). In sending out the invitation for people to participate, the town says Pitch-in Day “is all about the members of the community coming together to beautify public areas

within the town.” Those wishing to participate can register as individuals or as a group by calling the Nick Smith Centre at 613-623-7301 or emailing to abarclay@arnprior.ca. Participants wishing to pick up garbage in a specific public area in town are asked to divulge their location at the time of registering. The Town will be supplying garbage bags and picking up and disposing of the trash collected. They encourage people to sort out recyclables from the garbage and drop them off in blue boxes that will be set up at Robert Simpson Park. GIVE-AWAY DAY

The Town of Arnprior has also proclaimed Saturday, May 4 Giveaway Day. Residents put unwanted items at the curb with a ‘free’ sign and anyone passing by is welcome to help themselves. What is one person’s junk could be another’s treasure. The town asks that any leftover items be removed by 8 p.m. Saturday. Meanwhile, neighbouring Mississippi Mills, including Pakenham, is holding its annual exchange day over the whole weekend May 3-5.

Residents get three minutes to make points Continued from front

The meeting will run from 6 to 10 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Braeside. Considering the level of public interest in the application, which has been in the works for more than six years, council is expecting a large turnout and has booked the church for follow-up meetings at the same time on Tuesday and Thursday if needed to ensure everyone has their say. Mellema said citizens will have three minutes to make their presentations. As well, three ‘experts’ have registered to speak and will be give 15 minutes each. Mellema said the meeting will start with planner Bruce Howarth reviewing the process and updating

what has happened so far. The applicant will then introduce its proposal before the meeting is opened for public comments. After the hearing, council will likely schedule a special meeting to go over the input and see if it needs any unresolved issues clarified. Therefore, it’s not likely to make a final decision until at least one of its June meetings. The public can still submit written input up until the time council makes a decision on the zoning and official plan bylaws. Because of Monday’s hearing, council has changed its May meeting dates to May 14 and 28, with the Planning Advisory Committee meeting May 21.

Budget Con’t from front

The township is also dealing with another decrease in its municipal partnership funding as well as the rising costs of a variety of items from fuel to policing. To bring the budget down to a figure at which council was comfortable, a major road project has been delayed. Council also is proposing dipping into reserves to finish off projects such as the boat launch. Council is expected to adopt the budget at its May 14 meeting.
