EMC Events – There is a familiar saying: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. On Saturday, May 4, the West Carleton Coupon Club (WCCC) is hosting a Carleton Place Freecycle Exchange at the municipality’s Carambeck Community Centre. The unique event, a fundraiser for the Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital (CPDMH), runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Moreover, the exchange is an opportunity to inform/ educate the public about re-purposing used products. Admission is only $4 per person; children under 12 get in free. Festivities include free Starbucks coffee and prize draws, concessions (baked goods), information and display booths, and a kid’s craft area that utilizes recycled materials, of course. “Both the Town of Carleton Place and Mississippi Valley Conservation will have a booth setup, said Sarah

Brownis, organizer and WCCC member. Other accessible information on May 4: businesses offering products or services for trade or barter; artists repurposing old materials into new forms; organizations working on environmental issues; crafters bringing new life to old jewelry, clothing or furnishings; recycling and composting tips; and much more. So how does the freecycle exchange work? Simply pay the entry fee and take away any of the many free items donated by residents. “This is a great opportunity to find out about the many resources available in the community for recycling, she said. “Participants can learn how to be green, reducing their carbon footprint in a local way. Items leftover from the exchange will be donated to the 5th Annual Royal LePage Garage Sale, which benefits Lanark County Interval House. Individuals interested in participating or donating a prize item can contact Brownis at saraheliza3@yahoo.ca or 613-253-8952.

EMC News – On April 4, the Township of Beckwith acknowledged autism by raising the autism flag for awareness at the Township of Beckwith municipal building. Autism Ontario provided the flag. The Township of Beckwith council wanted to help spread awareness of Autism across Ontario and throughout our area by flying the flag for the month of April. “Because of the flag raising and the awareness information that was sent regarding autism, I was made aware that autism is not a mental illness it is a neurological disorder with no cure however, individuals with autism can lead productive and fulfilling lives, stated reeve Richard Kidd. Present at the flag raising with council and staff was Amy Booth, co-founder of the Lanark Autism Support Group. Lanark Autism Support Group is one of the largest autism support groups in Ontario.
