SERVICES | Government Eligibility for the Old Age Security pension and the Guaranteed Income Supplement The Government of Canada proposes to gradually increase the age of eligibility for the OAS pension and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) between the years 2023 and 2029, from 65 to 67. People currently receiving OAS benefits will not be affected by the proposed changes. The Government of Canada also proposes to gradually increase the ages at which the Allowance and the Allowance for the Survivor are provided, from 60-64 today to 62-66.

Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) People getting the Old Age Security pension who need financial help may be eligible for the Guaranteed Income Supplements (GIS). To find out if you are entitled for GIS you must fill out a GIS application form. An application for GIS is mailed, at your request, once your Old Age Security Pension is approved for payment.

Voluntary deferral of the Old Age Security pension The Government of Canada also proposes a voluntary deferral of the Old Age Security (OAS) pension that will give people the option to defer take-up of their OAS pension by up to five years past the age of eligibility, and subsequently receive a higher, actuarially adjusted pension.

may be eligible for full or partial CPP retirement benefits, provided you have contributed to the plan. A person who has turned 60 years of age may choose to begin receiving CPP benefits at that age. The CPP adjusts the amount of your pension by 0.5% for each month before or after your 65th birthday from the time you begin to receive your pension. The adjustment is permanent. This means that if you choose to start your pension early, the payment does not increase when you reach 65. For example, if you start your pension at 60, your monthly payment is 30% lower than if you wait until you’re 65. However, by starting it sooner, you will likely receive it for a longer time. If you start your pension at 70, your monthly payment is 30% higher than if you had taken it at 65. You may be able to share your Canada Pension Plan benefits with your spouse or common-law partner. You must apply to get these benefits.

The Allowance Benefits A 60 to 64-year-old spouse or common-law partner of a person who is getting OAS may be able to get Allowance Benefits. The spouse or common-law partner must meet residence requirements and the couple’s income must be within set limits. You must fill out an application each year if you still need Allowance Benefits, otherwise payment will be discontinued.

Allowance for Survivors Financial help is offered to the legal or commonlaw spouse; the survivor must be 60 to 64 years old and meet both residence and income rules.

Canada Pension Plan (CPP) The Canada Pension Plan offers retirement pensions, surviving spouse benefits and disability benefits. If you are at least 60 years of age, you 4 | SENIORS Activities & Services Directory | FALL & WINTER 2013

Passports Passports are valid for 5 years now. Effective July 1, 2013, a new 10-year ePassport will be introducd with new fees for 5 and 10-year passports. Persons born in Canada must submit an original birth certificate. Those born outside of Canada must submit an original certificate of citizenship. Unlike the General Application Process, the Simplified Renewal Application Process does not require applicants to submit documentary evidence of citizenship (birth certificate, citizenship card, etc.) or provide supporting identification. The application form is shorter and no guarantor declaration is necessary. The Government of Canada continues to recommend that travellers carry a valid Canadian passport for all visits abroad, including the United States. A passport is the only universally accepted identification document and it proves that you have a right to return to Canada. Canadians are encouraged to plan ahead to avoid peak periods. Canadian citizens require a passport to enter the United States at land ports of entry as of June 1, 2009. Living Wills

G.R.A.N.D.

A Living Will is a document that states your wishes regarding consent to or refusal of specific treatment. A Living Will is different from a Last Will and Testament because a Living Will addresses your health care, whereas a Last Will and Testament deals with matters of property. Both documents are essential for every adult. The Living Will allows you to direct your family, physician, and others about your health care choices, based on your own values and beliefs. A completed Living Will should be very specific as to what type of health care choices you wish in end of life situations. An example of what a Living Will addresses includes whether the person wishes to be hooked to a ventilator or respirator. A complete Living Will kit with instructions for how to complete the form is available from Dying With Dignity at the address below.

What is an Enduring Power of Attorney for Personal Care? The Power of Attorney for Personal Care or Health Care is a critical document to have should you be facing a health care crisis. There may come a time when you are unable to communicate your wishes or appreciate the implications of some decisions. A Power of Attorney for Personal Care allows you, in advance, to appoint an individual or individuals to make appropriate decisions on your behalf.

The relationship between grandparents and grandchildren is priceless! This bond is special, providing a sense of heritage and continuity in today’s rapidly changing society. Yet today, factors such as broken marriages, divorce, death and other circumstances often destroy this mutually important relationship. Many grandparents lose access to their grandchildren in which case both the grandparents and children suffer. G.R.A.N.D. works to: • Provide emotional support to grandparents who, for one reason or another, have been denied access to their grandchildren. • Make the public and professionals aware of this ill in our society. • Influence Provincial Family Law to recognize the interest that grandparents have in their grandchildren’s well-being. Aims of the G.R.A.N.D. are: • Support system • Best interest of the child • Mediation • Public education and awareness • Prevention through family life education • Changes in the law • Specific recognition of grandparents For membership information and meetings call: G.R.A.N.D. SERVICES | Medical Facilities Community Health Centres ~ a place where everyone matters! At the 73 Community Health Centre’s across Ontario, the health and well-being of every individual, every family, every community matters! In our area, four Community Health Centres (CHCs) work closely together to provide a full range of primary health care and health promotion programs and services. They are: Country Roads Community Health Centre (in Portland); Merrickville District Community Health Centre (in Merrickville); the North Lanark Community Health Centre (located in Lanark Village); and the Smiths Falls Community Health Centre in Smiths Falls. Community Health Centres are an effective and unique model of primary health care where an inter-disciplinary team of health care professionals work together to respond to people’s individual health concerns. At all CHC’s in our area, this team includes: doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, dietitians, social workers, chiropodists, respiratory therapists, health promoters and community developers. In addition to primary care services, CHC’s also offer a wide range of free health promotion, education and prevention programs to address the broader health needs of the people and the communities they serve. In most cases, you do not have to be a client of the CHC in order to access these programs. While each CHC has their own specific group programs based on the unique needs of their community, they often include groups where people: learn how to manage their diabetes, asthma and other chronic conditions; get support to quit smoking; participate in community-based exercise classes, walking groups or yoga classes; learn relaxation, meditation and other techniques for stress reduction; and learn how to cook and purchase healthy foods on a budget.

SERVICES | Medical Services Foot Care Older people often find it difficult to reach their feet and therefore have trouble caring for them. Simple procedures such as nail cutting can usually be performed by caregivers. Elders with diabetes or circulation problems, however, should have a podiatrist or chiropodist attend to their complete foot care. Most Home Support Programs and Para-Med Health Services sponsor weekly footcare clinics. For clients who cannot attend the clinics, agencies can arrange in-home footcare.

Tips for Vision Problems Proper Lighting • Ensure bulb wattage is high enough for the particular area. • Have several, evenly distributed light sources around all rooms. • Nightlights should be placed in hallways, the bedroom and the bathroom. • Consistent lighting minimizes shadows. • Dimmer switches and tri-light bulbs will control light intensity. • It is easier if switches are on the outside of the room so that you do not have to fumble in the dark. • Put intense light at the top and bottom of staircases and steps. Eliminate Glare • Use low-gloss wax on furniture and do not wax floors. • Minimize use of fluorescent lights as they produce more glare than incandescent lights. • Blinds or sheer curtains should be used in brightly sunlit rooms. • Shiny furniture or counter surfaces should be removed or covered. • Paint walls with matte-finish paint.

Long Term Care for Dentures Lon One of the real highlights as a health professional is educating our patients about how h to better take care of themselves, and in my practice, teaching my patients patien e ts how to take care of their dentures properly has become a mission. A regu eg lar cleaning protocol as well as regular preventative measures will regular withou ho question extend the life of the denture itself. without

Daily car care: A good daily care routine is essential for maintaining a Hygienic denture. Dentures are made of acrylic(plastic), and can harbor odour and bacteria over time. My experience is that some commercial cleaning solutions can be harsh on a denture so I recommend these solutions for only a 15-20 minute soak, or the length of time it takes to bathe or shower. Removing the denture at night is usually recommended in order to give the gums a much needed rest. The denture should be stored in water during this period or any time it is out of the mouth. Most Denturists agree the average useful lifespan of a denture is 5-8 years. Modern dentures are made with acrylic teeth and are designed to gradually wear down. How much they wear down will largely depend on the hardness and quality of the teeth, but also the chewing habits of the wearer. Denture Relines: Your mouth is continuously changing. The size and shape of your gums are not the same as they were the day your dentures were made. The dentures may become loose and painful, but not always. These changes can happen so gradually that some patients are unaware of a problem. Often an over-closed jaw position may result giving a “scrunched appearance to the face. The jaw will look protruded and the upper lip may look sunken in. Sometimes the corners of the mouth will present redness or cracking. $ UHOLQH UHӞW RI D GHQWXUH LV ZKHQ QHZ EDVH PDWHULDO SLQN DFU\OLF LV DGGHG WR WKH WLVVXH VLGH RI D GHQWXUH VR LW ӞWV properly.

FEATURE | Chartwell Retirement Residences

Supporting Your

Aging Parent

After her mother slipped while getting into the bath last year, Mary began losing sleep worrying how her mom, Anne, was managing on her own. While her mom was in the hospital recovering, Mary found a closet full of stained clothing and a nearly empty fridge, both evidence of how hard it was for her mom to get around independently, even before the accident. The problem, in part, was that Mary and her husband lived 90 minutes away, and sometimes their weekly visits were delayed by their grandchildren’s soccer games, unexpected deadlines at work or weekend cottage plans. For Mary, all of these events were shadowed by guilt and worry about her mom. Broaching the subject of retirement living, Mary pointed out the benefits of knowing that someone would always be nearby and that additional care was available, something her mom now required for safe bathing and dressing. At the same time, there would also be laundry, housekeeping, and someone to do the cooking and co-ordinate transportation to medical appointments. Agreeing to visit a few places to have a look, her mom was hesitant at the start of the process. That was until they walked into a Chartwell Retirement Residence. Not only were the services and amenities perfect for her mom, Mary felt the sense of community immediately. Just as in the well-known song, this was a place where everyone knew your name. Mary’s mom moved in over six months ago, and both agree that the decision was long overdue. In fact, not only is Anne eating better, but she’s made new friends and is now participating in a number of activities through Chartwell’s Live Now - Live Active program. On the other hand, Mary is now worrying less and enjoying her visits more. If the time has come to start considering your retirement living options, we can help. Contact us to arrange your personal visit and to learn more about the many benefits of living in a Chartwell retirement residence.

FEATURE | To think of mobility is to think of Mobility Care Company… 20 years ago Malcolm and Peggy Kirkpatrick had a revelation. They realized that there was a lack of any sort of company that serviced/sold home health care equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, canes, etc. in Perth and its surrounding areas and they had a desire to change that. Helping people attain independent mobility became their philosophy. They also recognized that there was indeed a large market/clientele for these sorts of products and services in this area and so they set out to fill this void and Mobility Care Co. was born. Twenty years later they have grown to eight professionals taking care of those in need of assistive devices, but it’s so much more than that. Yes, they have wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, bathroom safety, lift and recline chairs and just about any other assistive tool you may think of. They also do custom adjusting, designing, and fabricating work on some of these items because everyone is different and so are their needs, which means they get personalized care from start to finish. And if you can’t go to them, they will come to you. They offer rental for many items such as ramps, wheelchairs, walkers, bathroom safety items, hospital beds, lift and recline chairs, to name a few, for those with

short-term needs. Give them a call and they can set aside the item for you and have it ready when you are. They offer a wide range of incontinence products/brands such as Prevail, Tena, Tranquility, Kendall, Wings and Sure Care. Delivery is free with a minimum order for extra convenience. For VAC (DVA) & ODSP clients, if you are eligible and provide your K/ODSP number they can bill direct so you don’t have to. One of their many happy clients says: “Thank you so much! I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned it to you, but I have never experienced the level of customer service that your company provides! I never hesitate to tell people how wonderful Mobility Care is and I recommend you to everyone. You are ALL doing EVERYTHING right! There is absolutely nothing I would change about your service. You make my life so much easier and I am so very grateful.”

They deal directly with many insurance providers, the Ministry of Health’s Assistive Devices Program (ADP), WSIB, VAC, and ODSP and can help you obtain government funded equipment. FEATURE | Consult a hearing loss specialist Paul Dunlop has all the latest improvements Paul Dunlop Hearing Aid Service has been serving the community for 32 years. It’s never easy when one suspects a loss of hearing. It’s not something that happens suddenly but can occur gradually, eventually making it difficult to hear a conversation in a crowded room or listen to the television without having to turn the volume well up. The decision to consult a hearing loss expert to determine if a hearing aid is needed also is no simple matter. For some, even admitting there is a problem is a hurdle they have trouble overcoming. For 32 years, Paul Dunlop has been greeting individuals, assessing their needs, then fitting them with equipment that ultimately brings the world back to them. Rarely, he says, do people want hearing aids. But after experiencing the improved quality of life these small pieces of modern technology can bring, they’re happy with their decision. You are invited to have your hearing tested at Paul Dunlop Hearing Aid Service, located at 31 William St. E. in Smiths Falls. If you hear but don’t always understand what people are saying—people seem to mumble—you have to ask people to repeat—you have trouble understanding when more than one person is talking or when there are other noises, please come in for a consultation.

While many people are reluctant at first, they soon realize their value and return to Dunlop for regular assessments and upgrades when needed. If you have questions about your hearing and whether a hearing aid might be right for you, please call 613-283-7421.

DUNLOP

Even people now wearing a hearing aid or those who have been told nothing could be done to help them, may benefit from the latest improvements. “It’s continually improving,” Mr. Dunlop says of the technology being created to improve one’s hearing.

FEATURE | Customer service key to Madden Hearing success Are you having difficulty hearing? Do you miss key words in conversations, or frequently ask people to repeat themselves? Do you often need to turn up the volume on the TV or radio? Do you avoid conversations over the phone because they are just too frustrating and difficult? If you answered “yes” to more than one of these questions, then it’s time to have your hearing checked. Hearing loss is the most prevalent chronic healthcare problem in Canada, after hypertension and arthritis. More than 10 percent of Canadians suffer from some degree of treatable hearing loss, and more significantly, 50 percent are over the age of 65. Those who suffer with untreated hearing loss typically experience embarrassment, anxiety, stress, work related problems, and self-imposed isolation from normal social relationships… mostly avoiding family and friends. While hearing loss is a permanent and irreversible condition, the good news is that most hearing loss is treatable, and the earlier it is diagnosed and treated, the easier it is to return to normal levels of communication with family, friends and co-workers. Hearing aids have also improved significantly over the past few years, looking and sounding a whole lot better than even just a few years ago. Madden Hearing Centre, a division of ListenUP! Canada, is conveniently located in Brockville, Carleton Place, Kemptville, Perth and Smiths Falls. All of their hearing aid centres offer free and easy hearing check-ups conducted by certified hearing healthcare professionals, and they offer a broad selection of brand-name,

digital hearing aids and assistive listening devices for affordable prices. Every day, all year round, Madden and ListenUP! Canada offer hearing aids starting as low as $995; and their lowest price guarantee means they will beat any competitor’s price in Ontario by $50. Plus all hearing aids come with their exclusive Don’t Worry, Be Happy Guarantee™ which includes everything you need for three years, even the batteries, and a 90 day return or exchange satisfaction guarantee. Those who already wear hearing aids, no matter where they bought them, can join their Battery Club to get a complimentary hearing aid check-up, cleaning, and 3 months of batteries for free. Madden Hearing Centre, a division of ListenUP! Canada, is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call toll-free 310-2244 or visit ListenUPcanada.com.

FEATURE | Smiths Falls Audiology Clinic helps all adults with hearing challenges 2. Frequent requests for repetition • Hearing impaired people cannot follow the rapid flow of normal conversation. They may hear parts of sentences and lose the rest.

Audiology is the science of hearing and translating that knowledge through hearing tests, teaching, protective measures and, as the need is established, through rehabilitation with amplifying devices and usage of visual clues.

3. Confusion or inappropriate responses to questions • Individuals have been inappropriately labeled “senile” because of serious hearing problems which made adequate communication impossible.

I had never heard of audiology as a profession until my sister, who was a guidance counselor at a high school in Montreal at the time, told me about a professor, Dr. Dan Ling, who had come to give a lecture about the School of Human Communication Disorders at McGill University. It was a program leading to a Master’s degree in Applied Sciences. Almost immediately, I obtained an interview with the head of the program, Dr. Donald Doehring, who reviewed my Bachelor’s degree courses and said that I would be accepted if I did a year of pre-requisite psychology courses involving courses at a Bachelor’s level from year one through four. I pursued this at the University of Toronto and then returned to McGill to study for my Master’s degree. I had superlative teachers along the way, academically and then in the work place, in rehabilitative settings, in large city hospitals, working with general medical practitioners, ear nose and throat specialists and was given enormous support from acoustical engineers and hearing aid manufacturers as well as hearing scientists, colleagues, private industry, District Health Units, and family.

4. Monopolizing the conversation • It is easier for the hearing impaired patient to do the talking as this lessens the burden of trying to listen. 5. Imperfect speech • Sounds in speech which cannot be heard may begin to deteriorate. With presbycusis, high frequency hearing loss occurs first and sounds like “s’ or “sh” may be slurred or dropped completely. 6. Non-verbal responses to questions • This may take the form of nodding or shrugging. The patient may be guessing or pretending to understand in an attempt to conceal a hearing deficit. continued...

Clinical clues to hearing impairment

Registered with Ministry of Health Blue Cross/Veterans Affairs

Hearing tests, simple & advanced procedures, hearing aid selections

1. Abnormal voice level • People with hearing loss have difficulty monitoring their own voice level. • Most people with impaired hearing speak too loudly; some speak too softly.

continued from previous page. 7. Complaints of noises or ringing in the ears • Tinnitus is almost always a sign of hearing loss. It is also the initial complaint of people with acoustic neuromas. It can also occur as a side effect of medications. 8. Complaints of plugging or pressure in the ears • May be a sign of Eustachian tube dysfunction, middle ear fluid, cerumen, or less commonly, endolyphatic hydrops or acoustic neuroma. 9. Comments that others are mumbling • Patients with hearing loss hear speech at a low level with many of the sounds missing. Sounds are lost at an unequal rate because hearing loss occurs in different amounts at different frequencies. 10. Complaints of difficulty using the telephone • There may be difficulty understanding speech or even hearing the telephone ring.

11. Recent disinterest in social situations • Avoiding parties, abandoning bridge clubs or church activities may occur as noise levels make understanding too difficult. 12. Expressed disinterest in television • Patients may indicate that there is nothing worthwhile watching when, in fact, they mean that they cannot understand anything they want to watch. Patients exhibiting any of these signs or behaviours may have hearing loss and should be referred for audiology tests. The ear is an intricate system and the more information gleaned from testing, the easier the task becomes for a doctor to rule out certain difficulties medically and focus in on the actual site of the problem. This involves sophisticated equipment and procedures, not possible with a simple screening.
