A traveller ’s tale Final - USE THIS ONE

Yesterday I went under a waterfall for the first time, in a swerving and dipping Zodiac along with the other members of a small Peregrine group touring in South America. Argentina’s Iguazu Falls are spectacular, approached through jungle trails and viewable from platforms high above the river. If I’d been travelling alone, I’d have seen this magnificent prospect from above – but from below, wearing a life vest and getting drenched in a leaping boat? Like some of the other members of this group I’m not wildly adventurous, but travelling with Peregrine has made it possible to discard a few inhibitions and to have an unforgettable cultural experience. I’ve always been apprehensive about group travel and venturing outside my (mainly European) comfort zone, but the last two weeks have changed some old perspectives. It’s been fun to travel in Peru, Argentina and Chile with a small group of like-minded people, assisted by everhelpful and superbly informed local guides. More than fun, though – enriching too, because it’s a shared adventure and hence especially memorable. At the end of a long and strenuous day we’ve all enjoyed the sociable pleasure of reflecting on visiting the glories of Machu Picchu or seeing the wonder of an Amazon sunrise. There’s been a lot of lively conversation over some wonderful meals about what travel means to each of us – we often see people and places in different ways, and this range of experiences heightens what is already a rich and varied adventure. Greg travelled with Peregrine for the first time in April 2016, on the Rhythms of South America tour.

Effortless Travel Final - USE THIS ONE

At Peregrine we offer premium adventures, and for us that means embracing the spirit of adventure through an immersive cultural experience. This means guaranteed departures, handpicked accommodation, intimate

small groups, award-winning local guides, added inclusions and a slower, more considered pace. We’ll take you to the major highlights as well as along roads less travelled, getting you closer

to the local people and the culture you came to discover. Most of our transport is in private airconditioned vehicles, so we can avoid queues and crowds on public transport. Who said adventure had to be hard?

Local Experiences Why travel if not for the experience? To see and do things you can’t see and do at home? We start with the highlights, but when the big tour groups get back on the coach, our local guides will take you on more unique journey – to source the best ceviche in Lima, wine-tasting with new friends in Mendoza or sharing stories with a local family in the Sacred Valley.

Taking care of the details Final - USE THIS ONE

We’re all for taking the stress and uncertainties out of travel. You won’t need to rely on maps and guidebooks; our award winning local leaders take you to the heart of a destination (not just the major tourist sights) – they’ll

take care of entrance fees and tipping too. Airport arrival transfers are included, as are many meals throughout the trip, however we leave some lunches and dinners free, for you to make your own delicious food discoveries. At the

end of the day, hand-picked quality accommodation will ensure a comfortable night’s sleep. While flights, travel insurance and visas are usually not included in the base tour cost, we can assist in organising these for you.

What’s included • Guaranteed departure • All included sightseeing and entrance costs • Quality, hand-picked accommodation • A highly experienced Peregrine tour leader • Gratuities for services received as part of tour • Many meals (as indicated) • Additional specialist guides and porters • Airport arrival transfer • 24-hour emergency support from our local team peregrineadventures.com // 3

Small group journeys Final - USE THIS ONE

For some companies, the term ‘small group’ means sharing a bus with 45 other people. Not us. On a Peregrine tour you’ll be travelling in a group of, on average, just ten people. So when we say small group journeys, we mean

it. You’ll get more personal and attentive service from your local leader, make lasting friendships and explore places off limits to the larger tour groups (such as sharing a lunch at a local village deep in the Sacred Valley). With fewer travellers

in our groups, you’ll spend less time waiting around, and more time seeing the sights. It’s also how we reduce our travel footprint, preserving local experiences for future generations.

TRAVELLER TALES

The trip provided a chance to experience the culture, as well as learning about Inca history. The group size was small, which resulted in great friendships. Michele Palu, Lima to Cuzco

4 // peregrineadventures.com

The trip was all we had hoped for, and more. The itinerary was excellent. Everything advertised, we saw and did. Our guide could not have been any better. Allan Beagle, Amazon & Inca Adventure

Galapagos Southern Islands was the trip of a lifetime. The wildlife provides you with sensory overload and the atmosphere on the Queen Bea is relaxed and comfortable – a fantastic trip! Jillian Burgoyne, Galapagos

Local Leaders Final - USE THIS ONE

Twenty years ago, we became the first travel company of our kind to exclusively employ Englishspeaking local leaders, born and raised in the regions we visit. Who better to get to the heart of a destination with than the people

who live there? Our local leaders know more than just historical dates and trivial facts. They’ll share their stories, help you find hidden highlights (that you won’t find in a guidebook) and provide you with practical information on etiquette,

safety and speaking the language. Our small group size means more access to your guide’s incredible local knowledge, to ask questions, or get insider info on great local cuisine and hidden hot spots. In a nutshell, they’ll look after you.

“I always wanted to expand my knowledge of my country and do tours in and out of Peru. What I love most is the rich history of the ancient civilisations of Peru, and the biodiversity of this wonderful country.”

“My tip for travellers is to move with the same freedom that you do at home, but get involved with our customs and our people. You are here to live your own experiences, not what other people tell you!”

“What I love most about my country is the Cuban people! Staying in home stays with Cuban families will give you a completely different perspective and a unique experience of the magic of this land.” peregrineadventures.com // 5

Accommodation Final - USE THIS ONE

Hand-picked, quality lodgings Travelling in small groups means we aren’t restricted to staying in larger chain hotels. It means our destination experts can seek out smaller quality hotels, that better reflect the style of the region. All of our accommodation is carefully hand-picked for its quality, amenities and convenient location, so you can spend less time checking in, seeking out a wifi signal or lining up for the breakfast buffet, and more time soaking up a destination over a glass of wine.

Exclusive Feature Stays Almost all of our small group tours include at least one night in a Feature Stay – a stand out property that offers a deeper level of cultural immersion or unique perspective of a destination. It could be an eco lodge – with all the mod cons – deep in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, a heritage palace in India or a stilt cottage overlooking Inle Lake. Look for the Feature Stay stamp throughout this brochure for more information on some of our favourites.

FEATURE STAY

Hotel Isla Suasi – Suasi Island Solar-powered, self-sufficient and accessible only by boat, Hotel Isla Suasi is as remote as it is exclusive. With no electricity and no permanent human population, it’s the perfect way to experience this hidden haven of Peru.

Staying Longer? Start your trip a few days early or stay a little longer. We can book your pre and post travel accommodation – just let us know at the time of booking. Hotel Rosario, La Paz, Bolivia

Moments to Remember Final - USE THIS ONE

Seeing the famous sights is a must, but it’s often the unexpected moments that leave a lasting impression. We’ll take you beyond the highlights and travel at a relaxed pace that allows you to stop and savour each moment along the way. Throughout this brochure, you will see ‘Peregrine Moments’ on each of our trips. These are just a few of the special experiences you’ll have on your Peregrine trip; the highlights you’ll only have while travelling in a small group with a local leader. We’ll still get that perfect photograph of Machu Picchu or the Aztec ruins of Mexico, but enjoying a puppet show by local performance artists or digging a little deeper into the history of key Mayan temples with professional archaeologists are more likely to stand out as future memories.

Responsible Travel Final - USE THIS ONE

Responsible travel is at the core of our ethos. We employ our own local guides and staff from the destinations in which we operate; we eat in local restaurants and stay in quality, locally run accommodation that directly contributes to employment and the economy. It’s easy to be a responsible traveller; start by carrying a water bottle with you instead of buying plastic bottles to reduce rubbish, say no to plastic bags, learn a few words of the language, and respect local customs. Simple!

How we help

Our Foundation

Carbon offset travel

The Posada Amazonas, our feature stay in the Amazon, is an eco lodge run by the local community. Locals are trained in various hospitality roles to bring income to the area, rather than having to turn to illegal logging to earn money. Not only do you get a great insight into the culture of the region, your stay provides income and skills-training that support the local community.

In 2002, our parent company the Intrepid Group founded The Intrepid Foundation, a notfor-profit organisation that allows our travellers to give back to the communities they visit. Since then, our Foundation has contributed more than $5 million to more than 50 non-profit organisations around the world that address issues such as education, child welfare, environmental and wildlife protection.

In order to minimise our carbon footprint and contribute to a cleaner energy future for the next generations, we carbon offset all main emissions on our trips, with no additional cost to the traveller.

Private and Tailored Travel Options Final - USE THIS ONE

We understand that some travellers would prefer to see the world with their partner, a few close friends, or on their own. If group travel isn’t for you, we’ve got a number of private travel options available; carefully curated itineraries that follow the same premium adventure style as our regular group departures.

Private groups Prefer to travel with friends or family? Our private groups team can design an itinerary based on your list of must-sees and dos. Talk to one of our Destination Experts, choose your dates and travel companions and we’ll take care of the rest.

Photo: Stanley Kyu Kim (Flickr)

Independent Journeys

Independent Experiences

Some travellers would rather travel with a close friend or partner, so we’ve reimagined a selection of our top itineraries for just one to four travellers. You’ll have a specialist Peregrine guide in each location but will usually travel independently between major stops, to enjoy the benefits of a fully comprehensive itinerary with the freedom of a private tour.

Departing for a group tour on a specific date doesn’t suit everyone. So we’ve created a range of short ‘mini tours’ that you can link together to create your own unique holiday. Designed for one to four people, take an Independent Experience before or after a small group tour, or mix and match a few Experiences to create your ideal trip combination. It’s independent travel without the stress.

In this brochure we offer Peru, Ecuador, Guyana, Colombia, Costa Rica and Cuba as Independent Journeys. See pages 32, 33 and 59 for trip itineraries.

See pages 34 to 39 for a summary of our Independent Experiences in Ecuador, Costa Rica, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile and Brazil. peregrineadventures.com // 11

Frequently Asked Questions Final - USE THIS ONE

Where do I find more information on a specific tour? Head to our website, type the trip name or code into the search box at the top of the page, and away you go! There’s a button at the end of each trip page that allows you to view essential trip information, such as a comprehensive itinerary, inclusions and other useful information. Do I need a visa or travel insurance? Many countries require you to have a visa before arrival. After you’ve booked your trip, we’ll send you a pre-departure checklist containing all the visa information you’ll need. It’s important to get visa sorted well in advance. Travel insurance is compulsory on all Peregrine trips.

Do I need to book flights? The prices quoted in this brochure and on our website do not include international flights, however our sales team can help you book your flights. Just ask when you’re making your booking. How do I book a tour? You can book any Peregrine trip through our website, over the phone, in person or through your local travel agent. I’m travelling on my own. Do I need to pay more? Not at all! All our trips are twinshare (solo-travelling ladies share with ladies, while gents share with gents) so there’s no single supplement to pay. If you’d prefer your own room, we can arrange this on most trips at an additional cost. Let us know when you book.

Are there age limits or do I need to have a certain level of fitness? There’s no specific age limit, however most Peregrine passengers are in their 40s, 50s and 60s. Some of our trips involve walking on rocky terrain, cycling and climbing stairs – check the physical ratings (explained below) to see if the trip is right for you. How many people will I travel with? The maximum group size on all trips is 16, however groups usually consist of about ten travellers. What’s included in the price of a tour? An experienced English-speaking leader local to the region, airport arrival transfer (most itineraries), all transport (mostly private), all accommodation, sightseeing and entrance fees, many meals.

Welcome to

South America The historical and ongoing tussle between the conquerors (the Spanish conquistadors) and the conquered features heavily throughout South American culture. It’s why you’ll see native Aymara women in the street markets of La Paz with their brightly coloured dresses offset by a few-sizestoo-small bowler hat. It’s why indigenous ancestral themes are found all over the magnificent colonial works of the Quito School of Art. And it’s why Machu Picchu is thought of as the Lost City of the Inca, simply because the Spanish never got their hands on it.

INDEPENDENT JOURNEYS

While we feel that travelling with a small, likeminded group can elevate a holiday experience, we recognise that some travellers may prefer to see the world with just their friend or partner. So we’ve created a selection of itineraries for just one or two travellers in both up-and-coming and well established destinations. This allows you to enjoy the

benefits of a fully comprehensive itinerary but with the freedom and intimacy of a private tour. As well as the three trips that feature on this spread, some of our standard itineraries that feature throughout this brochure can also be done as independent trips. Look out for the ‘Independent Journey’ badge, which indicates which trips fall into this category.

Welcome to the

Galapagos Islands Up in the highlands of Santa Cruz you’ll find Galapagos tortoises milling around (if something so big and slow could be said to ‘mill’), shuffling along in search of their next snack. The picture is so perfect, the tortoises so impeccably framed by lush greenery, it’s as if someone has deliberately placed them there. It’s a feeling that you’ll often get travelling in the Galapagos, almost a thousand kilometres from the South American mainland. It seems every new beach, lagoon, hillside and outcrop you visit is home to an abundance of amazing creatures unperturbed by your presence.

What to know MEALS Healthy and generous meals are prepared three times a day by the onboard chef. Complimentary tea, coffee and purified water are available at all times, and soft drinks and alcoholic beverages can be purchased at the bar; simply pay your tab at the end of the cruise. Any special dietary requirements should be mentioned at time of booking.

A TYPICAL DAY Each day there’s a morning and an afternoon activity, which might be a wet or dry shore landing, a walk, a Zodiac ride or snorkelling. Zodiacs take you from the catamaran to each site and all activities are led by your expert naturalist guide. You don’t need to be able to swim to enjoy your time here; you can do activities from land, catamaran or Zodiac.

LUGGAGE There are luggage restrictions on the flight to and from the Galapagos. As your trip starts and finishes at the same hotel in Quito, we suggest only bringing essentials and leaving the remainder of your luggage in the secure hotel storage facility.

TIPPING If you have enjoyed the services of your guide and crew, a tip would be very much appreciated by them. As a guideline we recommend each passenger consider USD 15 per day for the crew and USD 10 per day for your guide.

SNORKELLING GEAR Snorkelling gear (mask, snorkel and flippers) and wetsuits are all provided on board the Queen Beatriz at no extra charge. A range of sizes and wetsuit lengths are available.

NATIONAL PARK AND PORT FEES A transit card fee of USD 20 is to be paid prior to departure from Quito Airport and a National Park fee of USD 100 is to be paid on arrival on the Galapagos Islands. Mexico in Depth 15 Days Days 1-2 Mexico City Arrive in Mexico City and take a private transfer to your hotel. Embark on a walking tour of the city’s historical heart, visiting the Metropolitan Cathedral, Zocalo, National Palace and Museum of Anthropology. Enjoy a taste of Mexico’s favourite food with a ‘taco crawl’, sampling from the best stalls (taquerias).

Peregrine Moments Find out how bee’s wax candles are made in a workshop and learn about mescal distilling from an experienced palanquero. Uncover secrets of the past as you explore the Mayan temples of the Palenque Ruins with a professional archaeologist.

Day 3 Teotihuacan – Mexico City Visit the extraordinary Aztec ruins of Teotihuacan, where the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon dominate the skyline. Return to Mexico City for another evening of exploration.

54 // peregrineadventures.com

Day 4 Oaxaca Set off on an early departure to Puebla and walk around the churches and colonial buildings that remain a testament to its proud history. Continue on to Oaxaca and browse the markets for traditional Mexican handicrafts sold by descendants of the Zapotec and Mixtec Indians. Day 5 Oaxaca Take a tour of Oaxaca that uncovers the artisan traditions of the town. Enjoy some lunch in the 20 de Noviembre market – perhaps from the famous grilled meats hall.

Day 9 Palenque Travel north into the humid jungle to Palenque, home to the impressive Maya ruins of the same name. Day 10 Palenque Ruins – Merida Discover some of the most impressive Maya ruins in Mexico. Much of Palenque remains hidden in the thick forest, and exploration here gives the feeling that Spanish invaders must have felt when first arriving. Continue north to the historic town of Merida – half a century in age and still retaining much of its old-world charm.

Day 6 Oaxaca Oaxaca is famous for its food and is the heart of pre-Hispanic cuisine, so pick up local ingredients at the market and take a cooking class. Day 7 San Cristobal de las Casas Fly to Tuxtla Gutierraz, then travel into the state of Chiapas to witness the 800-metre-deep Sumidero Canyon. Day 8 San Cristobal de las Casas Experience the well-preserved traditional cultures of the town’s local Mayan communities with explorations of the highland villages.

MEET THE INTREPID GROUP FAMILY Run by travellers, for travellers. We’re a family of adventure travel companies, who together make up the world’s largest provider of adventure travel experiences. For more than 27 years, we’ve specialised in creating immersive, off-the-beatenpath adventures for every type of traveller – from the young to the young-at-heart – with over 1,000 itineraries in 100 countries catering to all budgets, travel styles, and appetites for adventure.

Adventures for every type of traveller Love the idea of Peregrine, but looking for more options? One of the other adventure companies in our family might be just what you’re looking for:

Run by passionate locals in more than 150 cities around the globe, Urban Adventures showcase both the world famous sites and local hotspots that make a place tick. From home-cooking classes to history lessons, or cycling excursions to social enterprises, Urban Adventures were created to give travellers a taste of what an Intrepid small group adventure feels like and can be as short as a couple of hours, or as long as a whole day.

If you’re aged 18-29, in the mood for epic adventures with other travellers your own age, your next trip may be with Geckos Adventures. We tread lightly and think locally – our trips are designed for smart, like-minded young travellers who want to avoid the big buses and explore like a local.

Intrepid’s small group adventures are for travellers of every age, budget, and appetite for adventure. From three to 365-day tours, from real food adventures to sailing, cycling or trekking adventures, Intrepid Travel is designed to cater for a diverse range of like-minded people who want to truly experience travel the local way.

Adventure Tours Australia has been leading travellers through this diverse land for 25 years. Now 100% Aussie owned, the only thing our expert local guides love more than their country is the chance to show it off. Seeing the sunset over Uluru or snorkelling Great Barrier Reef is pretty special, but we reckon it’s the stories of our people and an understanding of our indigenous culture that is fundamental to truly bringing the real Australia to life.

Responsible travel is a big reason we do the things we do. It’s why, way back in 2002, we set up The Intrepid Foundation – the Intrepid Group’s not-for-profit organisation that all of our travellers, including Peregrine, can support. Its purpose was pretty simple: to empower travellers to make a difference and to help communities in the places we visit. Since it began, we’ve raised over AUD$5m for 53 grassroots projects in 25 countries around the world, covering 100% of the administrative costs and doubling donations, dollar for dollar (up to $1,000 per donor and a total of AUD$400,000 per financial year, excluding emergency appeals).

Tailor-made trips Whether you want to create a journey with your friends or set out with just the two of you on your own adventure, we can help. Find out more: privategroups@intrepidgroup.travel 64 // peregrineadventures.com

This means our trip prices may vary at any time in accordance with demand, market conditions and availability. It is likely that different passengers on the same trip have been charged different prices. Your best option if you like the price you see is to book at that time. Once you have received a quote the price will be locked in provided you pay the required deposit prior to the quote’s expiry. Any reduced pricing or discounts that may become available after you have paid your deposit will not apply. If you wish to cancel your booking to take advantage of a cheaper price, full cancellation conditions apply. The most up to date pricing is available on our website. If any surcharge results in an increase of more than 10% of the trip price you may cancel the booking within 14 days of notification of the surcharge and obtain a full refund. We will not surcharge any booking for travel within the validity of this brochure once paid in full. Air Passenger Duty is included in the price of your air inclusive trip. Necessary details vary by trip; they include but are not limited to full name as per passport, date of birth, nationality, passport number, passport issue and expiry date and any preexisting medical conditions you have which may affect your ability to complete your travel arrangements. On some more demanding trips we also require you to complete and forward a Self-Assessment form. Failure to provide requested details may result in additional charges or non-refundable cancellation of your trip. 7. CANCELLATION BY THE TRAVELLER If you cancel some or all portions of your booking cancellation fees will apply. A cancellation will only be effective when we receive written confirmation of the cancellation.

If you cancel a trip: • 56 days or more prior to departure, we will retain the deposit; • between 31 and 55 days prior to departure, we will retain the deposit or 50% of the total booking cost; whichever is greater, and • 30 days or less prior to departure, we will retain 100% paid by you in connection with the booking. Note that different cancellation conditions including higher charges apply to some styles of trips and additional services including Polar bookings. Your booking consultant will advise if differences apply and details can be found in the Essential Trip Information relating to your trip. You are strongly advised to take out cancellation insurance at the time of booking which will cover cancellation fees. If you leave a trip for any reason after it has commenced we are not obliged to make any refunds for unused services.
