SEASON INFORMATION

SEASON OUTLOOK

Half the roster may be new, but an experienced core of veterans has Pepperdine women’s volleyball coach Nina Matthies excited about the 2009 season. Six letterwinners, five of whom were starters, are back from the 2008 squad that made the school’s 20th NCAA Tournament appearance. Another likely starter — a potential All-American, according to Matthies — redshirted last season, giving Pepperdine’s potential lineup even more punch. Seven newcomers will be added to the mix, but the Waves won’t necessarily need to rely on many of them right away. “We put these teams together to win the conference,” said Matthies, who heads into her 27th season as head coach with an overall record of 494-294 and a West Coast Conference-record 10 league titles. “I think this team has the pieces to do it and to make a run in the NCAA Tournament. Sometimes the mix of youth and veterans is the perfect formula to do that. The veterans know what it takes, and the young players don’t really know, so they just come in and play hard.” Despite a veteran lineup with multiple All-American candidates, the Waves will still feature a youthful team. The returning starters include two seniors and three sophomores, and a redshirt sophomore and a true freshman will probably handle the other spots. But Matthies likes the growth and maturity she has seen with her returning underclassmen. “What I liked the most about our spring season was that it didn’t matter if we were ahead, it didn’t matter if were behind,” Matthies said. “If we fell behind, someone stepped up. The last couple of years we got into trouble because there were times when we would get ahead, but we wouldn’t finish strong. This spring, I saw a more confident team. I think we’ve been lacking that at times. This is going to be a mentally strong team, and that’s what is

going to carry us.” Building team chemistry by getting seven returners and seven newcomers to mesh is an important goal, Matthies says. “I’m proud of our seniors for really understanding and embracing the situation,” she said. “They want to be team leaders and make sure this team is together. We’re got a very tight group with the seven returners. The freshmen that are coming in are pretty tight too. It’s going to be a good group, but it’s going to take a few weeks to make it happen.” The Waves must replace outside hitter Julie Rubenstein, one of the top hitters in school history and a 2008 AVCA All-American, as well as middle blocker Cassi Chamberlain. Rubenstein was clearly the go-to player the last four years, but that’s not a role that will necessarily be filled in 2009. “There have been teams where we’ve had a go-to player, and teams where we have been very balanced,” said Matthies, who is assisted again by Tim Jensen and Marcio Sicoli. “Both have been successful. I think this group will be very balanced, and that may make us stronger because there’s no single player that has to have all the responsibility or pressure.” The Waves have an even stronger nonconference schedule than usual. They’ll play local rivals UCLA, USC and UC Santa Barbara, travel to Colorado State’s tournament and visit Hawaii for two matches. “I really think it’s a good schedule,” Matthies said. “We open up at a great tournament at Colorado State, we get to come home for a couple of weeks and we get a really tough week against UCLA and Hawaii. It will really prepare us for when we go into the conference season. The WCC is so tough. It’ll be a challenge again this season but we’ll be ready.” The Waves, who went 20-8 overall and tied for fourth place in the WCC last season, were one of five conference schools to make the NCAA Tournament. Setters

LILLA FREDERICK

Senior Kiah Fiers (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Peninsula HS) is the clear starter, having earned All-WCC honors three times already (2007 first team, 2006 and 2008 honorable mention) while being named a preseason first team selection in 2009. She ranks fifth all-time in assists at Pepperdine (3,313) and rebounded from knee surgery after the 2007 season to post a solid junior campaign (10.68 assists per set). “We’re looking for big things from Kiah in her senior season, and she has not disappointed us by showing up to camp in tremendous physical shape,” Matthies said.

KRISTA FRIEDMAN “She wants to go out with a big year, and she wants to win. She has taken on a big load and understands what it takes to be a leader.” Waiting in the wings will be freshman Justine Hunter (Hollister, Calif./San Benito HS), a late addition to the Waves’ recruiting class. “We were in a little bit of a panic mode after being left with just one setter after the spring, but finding Justine was like finding a gold mine,” Matthies said. “She just sort of turned up and wanted to come to Pepperdine. She’s a terrific setter and a real leader. She’s a bit of a sleeper because she played at a smaller high school and club, but we’ve watched her and we think she’s going to be very good for us.” Outside Hitters With Rubenstein having departed, senior Rachel Grochmal (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) can slide back over to outside hitter after playing opposite last season, while sophomore Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./ Cornelia Connelly HS) is a returning starter and a member of the U.S. Junior National Team. The last name of Grochmal might not be familiar to volleyball fans, as veteran Rachel Lumsden got married this past summer. She will be starting for her fourth season for the Waves, and ranks #1 all-time at the school in service aces per set (0.36). She has been named to the All-WCC honorable mention squad twice and is the Waves’ top returner in kills (285, 2.85 per set). “We’re happy for Rachel, because she seems very settled and is really ready to have a strong senior season,” Matthies said. “I think she’s excited for it to be her turn. She has always kind of had to play behind Julie, but now

SEASON INFORMATION

it’s Rachel’s turn to shine, which will be great. I think she’s ready to have the spotlight and really perform well as a senior.” Coming off a WCC All-Freshman season where she averaged 2.39 kills (third on the team) and 2.80 digs (second on the team), Frederick competed this summer with the U.S. at the FIVB World Junior Volleyball Championships in Mexico. She started two matches and had a total of 35 points in 21 sets. “We’re looking for Lilla to take on a bigger load than she did last season,” Matthies said. “Playing volleyball all summer with the U.S. will be good for her. She’s matured and she’s in a comfortable situation, and she will be a very strong outside hitter for us.” Looking to push the two veterans are a couple of freshmen, Caitlin Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) and Ashley Broadwell (Bothell, Wash./Archbishop Murphy HS). Racich was rated #70 on prepvolleyball. com’s Senior Aces list and has played on the USA Beach Volleyball Junior National Team. “Being from Santa Barbara, we’ve known about Caitlin forever,” Matthies said. “She’s going to bring a great work ethic and a lot of fire. She can battle for a spot at outside hitter. She needs to get stronger as a hitter but she can definitely compete. She will really help our depth at the outside hitter position and can also play opposite. “Ashley is probably one of the newcomers that we’ve seen the least, since she’s from Washington and we’ve only seen her club play sporadically. But when we did, we saw that she had a powerful serve and was an integral part of her team’s success. She has wanted to come to Pepperdine since she was in the eighth grade so this will be a good place for her.” Opposite Redshirt sophomore Kristen Seaton (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo HS) is fully recovered from a foot injury that forced her to miss all of last season. Matthies expects great things from Seaton, a 6-foot-5 left-hander, and

considers her a potent force on the right side. She did well as a 2007 freshman, averaging 1.88 kills. “We know her foot injury is behind us,” Matthies said. “For some people taking a redshirt year can be tough mentally, but Kristen is stronger from all of the hours in our weight program and is more confident in her game. With three more years to play, I think she’s our next All-American. She has all the physical talent and can be the gal to take us to the next level.” Middle Blockers The Waves have the 2008 WCC Freshman of the Year, 6-foot-4 sophomore Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) back in the middle. She lived up to her billing as one of the nation’s top freshmen, leading the WCC in blocks (1.11) while finishing fifth in hitting percentage (.353) and averaging 2.14 kills. After being named honorable mention after the 2008 season, she is a preseason All-WCC first teamer in 2009 and an All-American candidate. “Kim is a worker and a great person,” Matthies said. “Nothing seems to faze her, she’s so calm and collected, and that is a great influence on the team. She will lead our younger middle blockers and show them how to do it.” With Chamberlain gone, the one spot that seems destined to be filled by one of the newcomers is middle blocker. The candidates are a pair of true freshmen, 6-foot-3 Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) and 6-foot Brittney Clark (San Jose, Calif./Presentation HS), and a redshirt sophomore, 6-foot Janea Rosell (Los Angeles, Calif./Bishop Montgomery HS). “Each one offers a little something different, and that’s going to be good for us,” Matthies said. “They present different matchups and different speeds depending on who we’re facing, which is a fun weapon to have.” Adelhelm was rated #85 by prepvolleyball.com on its Senior Aces list. Rosell spent the last two years at Arizona State. She redshirted the 2007 season and didn’t play volleyball in 2008. “Victoria is a very enthusiastic player,” Matthies said. “She’s a big, strong kid who’s a great blocker and can hit really well. She has a fantastic work ethic. “With a sister that played at Santa Clara for four years, one of the things that’s going to help Brittney is having watched the ins and outs and ups and downs of collegiate volleyball. She’s a little smaller, but has a giant wingspan, a really quick arm and really quick feet. “Janea spent all summer here at Pepperdine taking classes and working hard in the weight room, and she is extremely fit. She played on some great high school and club teams, but it’s been three years. It might not happen right away, but with her maturity level and having already played at the college level before, it should take her just a few weeks to get back into it, and I know she will help us.” Liberos

KIM HILL

The Waves have the reigning WCC Defensive Player of the Year, sophomore Stevi

STEVI ROBINSON Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS), back at the libero position. She led the conference with 4.81 digs per set, a figure that ranked #3 on Pepperdine’s single-season records list for the rally-scoring era. Both she and Hill were named to prepvolleyball.com’s “Rising Stars” list of the nation’s top freshmen. “We’ve told Stevi that since she was named Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman, she’s going to have to get it again or we’re all going to be disappointed,” Matthies said. “She did some good things last year and is getting better and really figuring things out. She spent all summer here in the weight room and she understands what will take her to the next level. She’s going to be fantastic this year and should be one of the best liberos in the country.” Krista Friedman (La Verne, Calif./St. Lucy’s Priory HS), the only junior on the roster in terms of eligibility, would like to regain the starting libero position that she held for a portion of her freshman year in 2007. If not, she is still expected to play a key role as a team leader and defensive specialist. “Krista is a great leader and people follow her in all walks of life,” Matthies said. “She does great things and is the backbone of this team. She works hard to make sure everyone is taken care of and happy. She’s going to compete with Stevi again for the libero position, and even if it’s as the DS, she’s sure to get a ton of playing time, which she deserves and has earned.” The final newcomer is freshman Kelli Branning (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton HS), who comes from an extremely athletic family. Her brother Richard is a sophomore on the Pepperdine’s men’s basketball team, her mother played volleyball at Cal Poly and her father played basketball at Notre Dame and was an NBA draft pick of the Indiana Pacers. “Kelli is a little bit of a sleeper, but as we watched her through her club season she really gained a lot of confidence,” Matthies said. “She could help us as a defensive specialist. She’s a really heady volleyball player and seems to be where the ball is all of the time. I’m excited about her ability to contribute to the team.”

COACHING BIOGRAPHIES

NINA MATTHIES HEAD COACH • 27TH SEASON After more than a quarter of a century developing the Pepperdine women’s volleyball program into a perennial top 25 entity and a mainstay in the NCAA Tournament, Nina Matthies begins her 27th season at the helm of the Waves’ program in 2009. Nationally recognized as one of the game’s top teachers, Matthies has led the Waves to 10 West Coast Conference titles and 18 NCAA Tournament appearances. She is the WCC’s all-time winningest coach with a career overall mark of 494-294 (.627) and a conference record of 268-64 (.807). Matthies has been honored as the WCC’s Coach of the Year six times and as co-Coach of the Year an additional three times during her tenure. Three times her coaching prowess has led to national recognition, as she was the 1999 District 8 Coach of the Year, the 2002 Pacific Region Coach of the Year and the 2003 Pacific Region co-Coach of the Year. Under Matthies, Pepperdine has twice ended the season with a #6 national ranking (2002 and 2003) and has finished the season ranked in the AVCA Top 25 13 times. In the NCAA Tournament, her teams have advanced to the Regional Semifinals six times and made the 2002 Regional Final. Her eye for talent and complete knowledge of the sport has produced 41 student-athletes who have taken home a combined 93 All-WCC awards, including 53 first team accolades. Pepperdine has produced eight conference Player of the Year honorees, including the only three-time recipient in Katie Wilkins, who was recognized in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Ten players have received Freshman of the Year accolades under Matthies, the most recent coming in 2008 with middle blocker Kim Hill. Under Matthies’ leadership, Wilkins became the first Pepperdine women’s volleyball player to be recognized as a first team All-American following her 2003 senior season. She was a second team All-American in both 2001 and 2002. Wilkins was the starting outside hitter on the U.S. National Team in summer 2007. A total of six of Matthies’ players have been named to an All-American team, most recently Julie Rubenstein in 2008, while nine different student-athletes have earned 11 AVCA All-Region honors, with Wilkins earning three from 2001-03. Matthies was hired prior to the 1983 season, becoming just the third head coach in program history, and it didn’t take long for her to start instilling a tradition of winning at Pepperdine, leading the Waves to consecutive 20-win seasons in 1984 and 1985. Since then, Matthies-led squads have topped the 20-win mark a total of 13 times, including a streak of five straight seasons from 19992003. When the WCC began sponsoring women’s volleyball in 1985, Matthies set the tone for what has been a recurring theme in the conference’s history by leading the team to the first of nine undefeated WCC schedules (1985, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2003). The following year, Pepperdine went on a record run of 41 straight home conference victories that lasted until the 1992 season. In fact, Pepperdine has dominated its conference counterparts for long stretches of time, twice posting WCC win streaks of 40-plus matches. Beginning with the final five WCC matches in

COACHING BIOGRAPHIES

1988, the Waves did not lose another conference match until falling 3-2 at Portland in the 1992 WCC opener. The streak lasted 47 matches. The only threat to Pepperdine’s streak started during the 2001 season. That year, the Waves began a stretch of three straight undefeated WCC seasons. The streak reached 43 straight before Saint Mary’s played the spoiler’s role in the second match of the 2004 conference season. Matthies led Pepperdine to its third-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 1984, just her second season in Malibu. But the journey was short-lived as the team dropped a five-game heartbreaker to USC. The Waves missed the postseason the following year before making six straight trips to the NCAA Tournament from 1986-91. Although the Waves lost their first 10 NCAA Tournament matches, in 1998 things began to turn around as the NCAA went to a national seeding tournament format. Following a 19-11 record in the 1998 regular season, Matthies and the Waves were shipped out to East Lansing, Mich., where they topped host Michigan State, 3-2. But one victory was not enough and the team swept North Carolina in the second round to earn the school’s first trip to the NCAA Regional Semifinals. In Lincoln, Neb., the Waves fell to the host Cornhuskers, 3-2. Matthies led her squad back to the Regional Semifinals the following year, 1999, after earning the right to host the first and second rounds for the first time in program history. The 2003 season was one for the record books as the team posted 27 wins (the most by a Matthies-led team), including a record 25 straight before falling to Minnesota in the NCAA Regional Semifinals. That season, Pepperdine reached its highest in-season ranking in the AVCA poll at #4. The team also earned the program’s first #1 regional seed for the NCAA Tournament. Following wins over BYU and USC, the 2005 squad also advanced to the NCAA Regional Semifinals. The 2006, 2007 and 2008 teams each bowed out in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Collegiately, Matthies was a two-year team captain at UCLA. She led both her 1974 and 1975 Bruin teams to AIAW national titles. In 1987, her #36 jersey was retired. In 1997, she was honored as one of “The 25 Greatest Players in UCLA History.” In 1971, she represented the United States at the Pan Am Games. She continued playing indoors professionally in the International Volleyball Association and the former Women’s Professional League. While enjoying a successful indoor career, Matthies also competed on the beach, where she was widely recognized as one of the world’s top volleyball players. In 139 career starts on the beach, she won 43 titles and earned 93 podium finishes. She officially retired from competition following the 1992 summer campaign. In December 2004, she was honored with seven plaques at the legendary Manhattan Beach Volleyball Walk of Fame. The plaques represented each one of her Manhattan Beach Open titles. Her success on the beach landed her a spot in the Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame. Matthies spearheaded a successful effort in the mid-80s to create the Women’s ProfesMATTHIES’ CAREER RECORD sional Volleyball Association. The WPVA laid the groundwork for the dramatically enhanced national YEAR OVERALL PCT. WCC PCT. FINISH visibility of the women’s beach tour. TIM JENSEN ASSISTANT COACH • 11TH SEASON Now in his 11th season as an assistant coach in Malibu, Tim Jensen is a veteran member of the Pepperdine women’s volleyball program. Jensen is involved in several aspects of Pepperdine volleyball, including practice planning, conditioning, recruiting and scouting. During his tenure in Malibu, which began with the 1999 season, the Wave program has compiled an overall record of 209-83 (.716), including a 113-27 (.807) West Coast Conference mark. In the 10 seasons since Jensen’s arrival, Pepperdine has earned nine NCAA Tournament berths, advanced to the NCAA Regional Semifinals four times, the Regional Finals once and finished in the AVCA Top 10 on four occasions. Prior to Pepperdine, Jensen served as the head coach for the varsity and junior varsity boys’ volleyball teams at Campbell Hall High School in North Hollywood, Calif. During his nine seasons, Campbell Hall advanced to the semifinal round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs in four consecutive seasons (1995-98). For his efforts, Jensen was named the Los Angeles Daily News Coach of the Year in 1998. Numerous athletes under Jensen went on to take part in collegiate volleyball, most notably Dylan Herrick, who played outside hitter at Pacific. In addition to his volleyball coaching duties at Campbell, Jensen served as head coach for the football program (1995-97), leading his squad to the Southern Section playoffs in 1995 and 1996. He was also a history teacher. Jensen serves as owner/director/head coach of the Beverly Hills-based Sport Shack Volleyball Club, a position he has held since 1993. The goal of the club is to develop a comprehensive program committed to providing instructional supervision in a disciplined environment. Sport Shack Volleyball Club is one of the largest in Southern California, with Jensen overseeing a staff of 20 employees that service 18 different teams in various age groups. Jensen has coached numerous Sport Shack Volleyball Club teams to top-five showings at national tournaments, including a first-place finish at the 1999 Davis Volleyball Festival in the 16-Under division. His 18-Under division squad claimed its first title at the Reno Volleyball Festival in 2005 with a perfect 28-0 record and posted a runner-up finish at the 2000 Davis Volleyball Festival and a third-place showing in 2001. During Jensen’s many years heading one of the nation’s premier club volleyball programs, he has helped develop and guide young women to successful collegiate careers at all levels of NCAA competition. Several former members of Sport Shack have gone on to win national titles and AllAmerican accolades at many of the nation’s top collegiate programs. A native of Pacific Palisades, Jensen graduated from Campbell Hall High in 1987 where he was a three-sport athlete, competing in basketball, football and volleyball. Jensen was selected Campbell Hall High’s Student-Athlete of the Year in 1986 and 1987. A first team All-Delphic League pick in both football and volleyball, Jensen helped Campbell Hall advance to the CIF Southern Section playoffs in volleyball during the 1986 and 1987 seasons. A 1991 graduate of Arizona, Jensen earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology and communications studies. Jensen and his wife, Lee, have a son, Axel McKee, and a daughter, Grace Montgomery. They reside in Ventura.

VOLLEYBALL HISTORY

PEPPERDINE VOLLEYBALL HISTORY It should not be too surprising that Pepperdine has emerged as one of the nation’s perennial powers in collegiate women’s volleyball. After all, the picturesque campus is situated just up the hill from Malibu Beach, a popular spot to show off one’s spiking talents. For most of its history, the Waves have boasted one of the nation’s top coaches in Nina Matthies, who begins her 27th season at the helm in 2009. Pepperdine women’s volleyball teams have advanced to postseason tournament play 25 times in 34 seasons, compiling an overall record of 661-396-2 (.625). Since the West Coast Conference added women’s volleyball prior to the 1985 campaign, the Waves have been the league’s dominant program, rolling to an impressive 268-64 (.807) record and a WCC-best 10 titles. The program set a league record by winning 47 consecutive conference matches from 1988-92. Since 1981, the Waves have made 20 trips to the NCAA Championships, including 11 in the last 12 years.

Pepperdine’s inaugural season came in 1975 under the guidance of head coach Patti Bright. The Waves were 26-4-1 in 1976 and finished fourth at the AIAW Championships in Austin, Texas. Pepperdine placed fifth at the 1977 AIAW Championships in Provo, Utah, and finished fourth again at the 1978 event in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Gary Sato assumed the head coaching duties prior to the 1979 campaign and led Pepperdine to an 18-9 mark and a ninthplace finish at the AIAW Championships in Carbondale, Ill. He then helped the Waves advance to the NCAA Championships in 1981 and 1982. Matthies took over the program in 1983. After competing as an NCAA Division I independent for the first 10 years, the Waves became part of the WCC prior to the 1985 campaign. Under Matthies’ guidance, Pepperdine has posted a record of 494-294 (.627) during her 26 seasons. Her teams have recorded 13 20-win seasons. During nine of the Waves’ 10 WCC title seasons, Pepperdine finished with an unbeaten conference record. The Waves finished in the top 10 of the national rankings for three straight seasons from 2001-03. The 2002 team went 26-7 and made it to the regional finals of the NCAA Tournament. The 2003 squad went 27-3, which at .900 was the best winning percentage in school history, and set a school record by winning 25 consecutive matches. Pepperdine has produced a number of outstanding players, perhaps the most notable being Linda Chisholm-Carillo, a member of the silver-medal winning U.S. Olympic Team in 1984 and formerly one of the top players on the popular professional beach circuit. Chisholm-Carillo was inducted into the University’s Hall of Fame in 1996. Nicole Sanderson, the Waves’ all-time leader in kills (2,028) and service aces (147), was the first Pepperdine player to earn AllWCC first team honors for four consecutive seasons (1994-97). She also competed in the Olympics for her native Australia in 2004. The Waves’ list of All-Americans includes Julie Evans (1987), Lisa Bevington (1988), Carolyn Hueth (1991), Jamie Hill (1999, Katie Wilkins (2001, 2002, 2003) and Julie Rubenstein (2008). 2009 PEPPERDINE WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL • 20

Nina Matthies knows what it takes to be successful in the sport of volleyball during and after college. A highly successful college career was followed by a beach career in which she won 43 titles and earned 93 podium finishes in 139 starts. Matthies was featured in the August 2005 issue of Volleyball Magazine (pictured above) where she had a four-page spread on training techniques. Under Matthies, Pepperdine has a long-standing tradition of producing athletes who go on to play on the AVP tour, the FIVB tour and in the Olympics. In 2005, Matthies was honored with a plaque for each of her seven Manhattan Beach Open titles (pictured below). The plaques line the Manhattan Pier.

Even more impressive is the team’s record against WCC foes in Firestone Fieldhouse, as the Waves are 145-21 (.873). The Waves have recorded a winning home record in 29 of 33 seasons, including 14 in a row. The last non-winning season at home came in 1983. Pepperdine posted a perfect 13-0 record at home in 2001. Pepperdine won a record-setting 55 consecutive home matches in WCC conference play, a streak that began in 1986 and continued through the 1992 campaign. Also in conference play, the Waves have have never had a losing home record in 23 seasons, and have had perfect home records on 12 occasions. The modern, cozy facility is an excellent place to view volleyball and basketball events from both courtside bleachers and upstairs theater seats. The listed capacity is 3,104, but attendance can climb closer to 5,000 for concerts, graduation ceremonies and lectures. Named in honor of Leonard K. Firestone, the facility was officially dedicated by President Gerald R. Ford on September 20, 1975. Recent upgrades to the facility include installation of an air conditioning system, refurbished locker rooms and replacing a versaturf rubber floor with a new wood surface.

THIS IS

“What we hope to build is much more than a beautiful campus. It will, as you can sense, be that. But if that is all we shall have accomplished, we shall have failed. What we hope to create here, in these hills, is a spirit of place. A place where minds will be opened, where lives will be changed, where lasting relationships will be formed.” — Seaver College Dedication, May 23, 1970

PEPPERDINE

• Malibu is located right alongside the Pacific Ocean, just about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Pepperdine’s picturesque campus is just a few hundred yards up the hill from Malibu Beach. The Malibu area, as well as all of Southern California, offers tremendous recreation, sporting and entertainment opportunities.

• Pepperdine’s motto is “Freely ye received, freely give” (Matt. 10:8).

• Pepperdine is an independent, medium-sized Christian institution committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values. • Approximately 8,000 students are enrolled in five colleges and schools, including Seaver College, the flagship undergraduate school of liberal arts and sciences. A bachelor’s degree is available in nearly 40 areas of study. • Pepperdine was ranked number 56 by the U.S. News and World Report’s list of America’s best colleges in 2009 (and is the only West Coast Conference school in the top 100). • Pepperdine was awarded the title of “Most Beautiful Campus” by the Princeton Review in 2005. • The student-to-faculty ratio is 13:1.

UNIVERSITY • Students and alumni consistently cite the quality, accessibility and caring nature of the faculty and staff as among Pepperdine’s major strengths. • There are 395 full-time teaching faculty, and 98% of full-time faculty have earned doctoral degrees. Students are provided with experiential opportunities, including research projects and internships so that their knowledge can be put to practice. • 75% of Pepperdine undergraduates receive some form of financial assistance. • Pepperdine University is respected both nationally and internationally. Students come to Pepperdine from all 50 states and more than 70 countries worldwide. Additionally, nearly 60% of Pepperdine’s undergraduate students study abroad at one point within one more than 20 international programs. • Pepperdine was recently voted as having the seventhbest study-abroad program in the nation by the Institute of International Education. Study-abroad programs include Heidelberg, Germany; London, England; Florence, Italy; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Lausanne, Switzerland; and Shanghai, China. • Among the 38 different majors offered, the top five at Seaver College are business administration, advertising, international studies, international business, psychology and political science. • The University was founded in 1937 by George Pepperdine, a Christian businessman who established the Western Auto Supply Company.

ATHLETIC

Pepperdine is classified as an NCAA Division I-AAA school (Division I schools that do not sponsor football), and the Waves are one of the very best of their kind. Since the I-AAA Athletic Director’s Association All-Sports Trophy was established, ranking the various schools on their postseason success, Pepperdine has finished in the top six every single time, including in first place twice (2004-05 and 2005-06). In the annual NACDA Director’s Cup standings, which measures overall postseason success, Pepperdine has finished first among all of its West Coast Conference rivals for 13 straight years.

Men’s Basketball

Jennifer Lacy

Over the years, the Pepperdine men’s basketball program has made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, captured at least a share of 16 conference titles, won three West Coast Conference Tournament titles and sent dozens of players into professional basketball. Head coach Tom Asbury was one of the top coaches in the WCC’s history from 1989-94 and he has returned to Malibu to help the program thrive once again.

Baseball

The 1992 College World Series champions, Pepperdine baseball has recorded a remarkable 32 straight 30-win seasons. The Waves have advanced to the NCAA Championships 25 times, including five times under head coach Steve Rodriguez. Pepperdine has captured 17 regularseason WCC crowns and four WCC Championship Series titles. Twenty-nine alums have gone on to success in Major League Baseball. Dan Haren

Yakhouba Diawara

Women’s Basketball

With seven postseason appearances in the last 11 seasons, the Pepperdine women’s basketball team has developed into a consistent winner and a contender in the West Coast Conference. The Waves made their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2000 with an at-large bid, then captured the WCC Tournament title and subsequent NCAA appearances in 2002, 2003 and 2006, the most recent coming under head coach Julie Rousseau.

Cross Country / Track

Head coach Robert Radnoti has the goal of national prominence for his cross country and track programs. The Waves were extremely strong in these sports at their SouthCentral campus from the 1930s to the 1960s, with All-Americans and Olympians to their credit. However, the programs were dropped briefly when the university moved its campus to Malibu. The Waves have made great strides in cross country over the years and track was added again in the past few years.

Women’s Soccer

One of the youngest programs on Pepperdine’s campus, the women’s soccer team has quickly developed into among the strongest in recent years. Since its inaugural season in 1993, the Waves have posted 10-win seasons 10 times and made the NCAA Tournament five straight years from 2001-05. Head coach Tim Ward has helped his Waves reach the NCAA’s Sweet 16 on two occasions.

Anna Picarelli

SUCCESS Men’s Volleyball

Pepperdine’s most successful program has won five NCAA men’s volleyball championships, second-most of any school, with the last title coming in 2005. The program is synonymous with head coach Marv Dunphy, who was responsible for four of the titles and has also had a long association with USA Volleyball. Pepperdine has made the NCAA Championships event on 15 occasions, including six times in the past decade.

Jonathan Winder

Men’s Golf

The 1997 NCAA men’s golf champions and a regular at the top of the West Coast Conference’s leaderboard, Pepperdine competes with the nation’s best. The Waves have won 16 WCC titles since 1987 and have 11 straight NCAA regional appearances. Pepperdine won the NCAA title in John Geiberger’s first season and have posted two other top 10 national finishes.

Michael Putnam

Women’s Volleyball

Andre Begemann

For most of its history, the Pepperdine women’s volleyball program has boasted one of the nation’s top coaches in Nina Matthies, who took over in 1983. Since the West Coast Conference added women’s volleyball, the Waves have been the league’s dominant program with 10 titles. Since 1981, the Waves have made 20 trips to the NCAA Championships, including 11 in the last 12 years.

Men’s Tennis

No team has been more consistent then Pepperdine’s men’s tennis program, which wins the West Coast Conference title and makes the NCAA Tournament with amazing regularity. The Waves have won 40 WCC titles, including 19 in a row. Led by head coach Adam Steinberg, the Waves reached the pinnacle in 2006 and won the national championship.

Jesse Smith

Men’s Water Polo

Pepperdine was the host site of the 1984 Olympic water polo competition, so it should be no surprise that the Waves excel in the sport. Pepperdine has advanced to the NCAA Championships 12 times in its history and captured the national crown in 1997. Current coach Jack Kocur was a player on that title team. The Waves have won at least a share of conference titles nine times and have finished in the top 10 in the national rankings every year since 1976.

Katie Wilkins

Women’s Golf

In the last 16 seasons since Laurie Gibbs became head coach, the Pepperdine women’s golf program has developed into a national championship contender. The Waves have won 11 WCC titles, been to 11 straight NCAA Regional tournaments and have made nine NCAA Championships appearances. The Waves finished second in the nation in 2003 and boast four top-five finishes.

Katherine Hull

Sylvia Kosakowski

Women’s Tennis

No coach has been on staff at Pepperdine for more consecutive years than Gualberto Escudero, who took over as women’s tennis head coach in 1977-78. His tenure has featured WCC titles (21, including seven in a row), NCAA Tournament appearances (26, with 12 in a row) and top 25 finishes (including eight times in the nation’s top 10). Lindsay Adarme

Women’s Swimming & Diving

For more than 20 years, Pepperdine has thrived in the Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference. The Waves have had nine consecutive topfive finishes under head coach Nick Rodionoff, including a program-best-tying secondplace finish in 2008. Ten of Pepperdine’s 20 record times have come under Rodionoff’s watch.

The fact that Pepperdine has won NCAA championships in five different men’s sports is a rare feat, as the Waves are one of only 14 schools to accomplish this. COMMUNITY

Pepperdine University’s goal is to “strengthen lives for purpose, service and leadership” and the Pepperdine Athletics Department is a strong believer in helping its student-athletes to meet this goal. The school’s athletic teams embrace the concept of volunteerism and service to the community. Teams are regularly taking on projects that will better the lives of others. Step Forward is an annual day held each fall that is devoted to community service, when more than a thousand Pepperdine students, staff, faculty and alumni will disperse throughout Southern California in order to lend a hand to those in need. Pepperdine’s athletic teams have been front and center as part of this event, as well as other service opportunities year-round.

LIFE SKILLS/SAAC The Pepperdine University Athletics Department is committed to a program of life skills that provides educational experiences and services in order to develop well-balanced life styles for student-athletes; to encourage growth in decision making, planning and fulfillment of career and life goals; and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the university setting. The program is required for every incoming freshman and transfer student-athlete. Nationally recognized speakers and a life skills class are part of the program. Topics are chosen to support the following commitment purpose statements: • Commitment to Academic Excellence — To support the academic progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation. • Commitment to Athletics Excellence — To build philosophical foundations for the development of athletics programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student athlete.

• Commitment to Personal Development — To support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for studentathletes, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision making skills. • Commitment to Service — To engage the studentathlete in service to his/her campus and surrounding communities. • Commitment to Career Development — To encourage the student-athlete to develop and pursue career and life goals. The Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) is comprised of two student leaders from each athletic team at Pepperdine. National SAACs at a glance: • Generate a student-athlete voice within the NCAA structure. • Solicit student-athlete response to proposed NCAA legislation. • Recommend potential NCAA legislation. • Review, react and comment to the governance structure on legislation, activities and subjects of interest. • Actively participate in the administrative process of athletics programs and the NCAA. • Promote a positive student-athlete image.

WCC

When the West Coast Conference first got its start back in 1952, the founders really had only one goal in mind — to create a convenient way for five Bay Area schools to play basketball. What has grown from that original vision some 57 years ago is a marvelously cohesive athletics league that is competitive at a national level in 13 sports. The eight current members of the WCC span the western coast of the United States from Canada to Mexico. Though the institutions range from the pine forests of Eastern Washington to the sun-drenched beaches of Southern California, the combined excellence in academics and athletics sets the conference apart on the national scene and draws the individual institutions together in a common mission. The WCC sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball. Originally chartered as the California Basketball Association, the five-team league included Pacific, Saint Mary’s, San Francisco, San Jose State and Santa Clara, and the firstever men’s basketball game was played January 2, 1953. After three seasons of play under that name, the conference expanded to include Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine in 1955, and became known as the West Coast Athletic Conference in 1956. The name was shortened in 1989. The current alignment of Gonzaga University, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University, University of Portland, Saint Mary’s College, University of San Diego, University of San Francisco and Santa Clara University has remained unchanged since 1979, making the WCC the third-most stable athletic conference in the nation. Only the Ivy League and the Pacific-10 Conference have been together longer. Women’s sports were incorporated into the WCC prior to the 1985-86 season, and the league has made steady improvements in several sports, particularly basketball, soccer and volleyball. Since joining the WCC prior to the 1955-56 season, Pepperdine has claimed 129 WCC regular-season team championships in the following sports: baseball (17), men’s basketball (12), women’s basketball (4), men’s golf (16), women’s golf (11), women’s soccer (1), men’s tennis (40), women’s tennis (21) and women’s volleyball (10). Additionally, the men’s and women’s basketball team have each won the league’s postseason tournament three times. The baseball team has won the WCC Championship Series four times. The league relocated its headquarters in the summer of 1998 to San Bruno near the San Francisco International Airport. The WCC hired Jamie Zaninovich as its commissioner in March 2008.

MPSF

The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation was established during the 1992-93 academic year to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic and West Coast Conferences and other selected universities in the western United States; and to provide championship competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The MPSF was originally formed to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation; to contain the costs of competition; and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. The Federation has served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and as a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. In men’s volleyball, the Waves have won five regular season and four tournament titles. Pepperdine competes against BYU, Cal State Northridge, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Pacific, Stanford, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and USC. MPSF schools have won 14 of the 17 NCAA men’s volleyball championships since the conference was created (including one by Pepperdine). In men’s water polo, the Waves have won two regular-season crowns. Pepperdine competes against California, Long Beach State, Pacific, Stanford, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and USC. MPSF schools have won all 17 NCAA men’s water polo championships since the conference was created (including one by Pepperdine).

PCSC

Pepperdine has been a member of the Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference for more than 20 years. The PCSC has allowed a number of swimming programs of all shape and size — NCAA Division I, II and III and the NAIA — who are not affiliated with a major conference to come together and participate at a championship meet. The Waves swim against AlaskaFairbanks, Biola, California Baptist, Cal State East Bay, Chapman, Concordia, Fresno Pacific, Loyola Marymount, Northern Colorado, Seattle, Soka, UC San Diego and UC Santa Cruz. Pepperdine has always been among the top programs in the PCSC and tied its best-ever finish with a second-place showing in 2008.
