Adult Learning Courses for adults 19+ Courses for adults 25+ with learning disabilities, autism, Asperger’s and other hidden disabilities On all our courses you will work towards targets set with the tutor and keep a journal. These are so you can see how busy you have been and how much you have learnt whilst having fun and making new friends. It is really important that you attend every session so you enjoy your learning, and carry on seeing your friends. If you feel that you would struggle to attend 100% then please speak to us and we can support you. If you are a carer/support worker attending with your learner then please make sure you keep in touch with us regarding any issues. In addition to the courses in our prospectus, People Matters provide adult learning for individuals who are developing their literacy, language and employment skills. These courses are delivered in the community. To find out more, please contact us on the details below.

How to join a course If you are interested in a course and want to find out more, you can contact the office on 0113 2346896 or email info@peoplemattersleeds.co.uk When you phone us, someone will contact you to have a chat about the course you want to do and the support you will need. This can be done over the phone or in as a 1-1 meeting. If you prefer to come in to the office, this can be arranged. 2


Monday Courses Heading Out: As a team you will be researching and planning journeys to take you all over West Yorkshire, increasing your knowledge and confidence with travelling and experiencing new and exciting places! Learners will need to cover their own travel costs and you will also need a packed lunch. This course is LLDD specific for adults 25+ and free if you are in receipt of benefits. 12 week course Starts: Monday 15th April Ends: Monday 8th July Time: 10.30am - 3.00pm

World of Relationships: This course is about developing safe and healthy attitudes in relationships. On this course you will be able to explore the different areas surrounding a relationship through discussion and fun, interactive games and activities. Here you will be able to share your own experiences in a safe, supportive and confidential environment. This course is for adults 19+ and free if you are in receipt of benefits. 6 week courses.

Tuesday Courses Creative Story-telling: Using a range of creative styles that are right for you such as art, writing, music, film and photography; you will explore, create and express a short story that has been built from your own ideas and imagination. This course is LLDD specific for adults 25+ and free if you are in receipt of benefits. 6 week courses. Course 1 Starts: Tuesday 16th April Ends: Tuesday 21st May Time: 10.30am - 2.00pm

Course 2 Starts: Tuesday 4th June Ends: Tuesday 9th July Time: 10.30am - 2.00pm

D’s Story - D has completed several courses at People Matters, learning new skills and building confidence each time. D has designed and created several hand-crafted items such as jewellery and decorations. She is currently making an under the sea themed name plaque on her latest course. D enjoys 3 the friendly environment, making new friends and having fun.


Wednesday Courses Art and Craft: From using paint, clay and textiles, this course is all about working with you to create a range of projects such as paintings, drawings, sculptures and collage. This course will help you develop practical and social skills, make friends and have fun. At the end, you will have an exhibition! This course is LLDD specific for adults 25+, who may require high levels of support. There is a ÂŁ15 cost towards resources. 12 week course.

Thursday Courses Design, Make, Display!: This course is all about making a range of

hand-crafted items that can include bags, keyrings, candles and decorations. You will work with the tutor to decide on the project you would like to create using different techniques such as sewing. This course will help you develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and tool skills. This course is for adults 19+. There is a ÂŁ15 cost towards resources. 12 week course. Starts: Thursday 18th April Ends: Thursday 4th July Time: 10.30am - 3.00pm

Friday Workshops Welcome to Volunteering for individuals: Once per month we deliver a 4.5 hour workshop for people who are interested in becoming volunteers. This workshop is suitable for those with little or no experience who want to develop the skills needed to become a confident and valued volunteer within a third sector organisation. These workshops are for adults 19+.

Welcome to Volunteering for organisations: If you have a small number of volunteers who would benefit from training or a refresher; a place can be offered on the welcome to volunteering workshop for individuals. If you have a group size of 8 plus, we can deliver the 4.5 hour 4 workshop tailored to your organisation.

Employment Skills courses (19+) Preparation for Work - Getting ready for work Learn in a small group with a tutor, support assistant and job coach. This will help you in your search for a job; paid or unpaid. This course if free if you are in receipt of benefits. A 12 week course running two days per week from 10.30am 3.30pm plus a work placement on another day. Monday and Tuesday Start date: Monday 25th February 2019 End date: Tuesday 11th June 2019 Easter break: Week beginning Monday 8th April Wednesday and Thursday Start date: Wednesday 18th April 2019 End date: Thursday 11th July 2019 Half-term week: Week beginning Monday 27th May

Job Club

Support to help you find paid or unpaid work in a small group with a tutor, plus 3 hours of individual support with a job coach. This course is free if you are in receipt of benefits. All classes run 10.30am—1.30pm for 7 weeks. Club because I needed help with my CV and job searching skills. We practiced interview skills, filling out applications and giving presentations. I learnt how to search for jobs that I could match my skills set to. This gave me the confidence to apply for a full-time position, with the help from my job coach and tutor and I am now in paid employment.”

What Next? To join please contact the office Monday – Friday between the hours of 9.30am - 5.30pm, to have a chat about the course you want to do. Availability of places can be checked over the phone. A contact number must be given (this can be a staff number if you’re home is supported living). You will need to speak to a member of staff and complete an enrolment form prior to a course starting. If you would like to, you could do this at one of our taster sessions on Tuesday 9th April, Wednesday 10th April and Thursday 11th April. Come along and meet the team. Places are limited. This means that you may not be able to do all the courses you would like at once. We have a waiting list if our courses are full.

How much will it cost? Where applicable contribution costs are as stated per course. Prep for Work and Job Club have no cost if you are in receipt of benefits, for example Job Seekers Allowance or Universal Credit. For further information see our website
