SERVANT LEADER Rev. Brown installed as president of BMU of Dallas and Vicinity

MY TRUTH

by Cheryl Smith, Publisher

Adult check On several occasions in a classroom full of young ladies, the discussion focused on relationships. The young ladies talked about the guys in their schools and how they were not attracted to the young men for a number of reasons. I told them that years from now they would be attending class reunions and they would run into the same guys and shake their heads in wonderment. Some of those very guys they fawned over would make them wonder what was going through their heads back in the day. I remember friends who I thought I couldn’t live without. But life happens and the narrative changes totally. Things change! Lie long enough, you will see. Which brings me to my truth. I had a friend in high school. We walked to school together every day. Once at school we went to homeroom together, attended many of the same classes, including our journalism class, ate lunch together and walked home together after softball practice or some after school meeting.

The government shutdown and the collateral damage THE LAST WORD By Dr. Julianne Malveaux Author, economist and president emerita of Bennett College.

As I write this, our federal government has been shut down for 27 days. At first, it seemed like a gamesmanship joke, like who was going to blink first. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and (CA) Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (NY) didn’t look like they were blinking when 45 said he would “own” the shutdown to get his wall. He’s not owning it now – he didn’t go to Mar-a-Largo to golf, and he indicated how acutely he felt the shutdown by serving Clemson football players cold fast food. Furloughed federal workers will be paid, thanks to legislation 45 signed on January 16. The fact that people will get paid when the shutdown is over (which 45 says may take “months” or “years”) is reassuring, but it helps few with their day-to-day obligations. A 2018 study from the Federal Reserve Bank says that 40 percent of all Americans can’t absorb a $400 emergency without going into (further) debt, borrowing or selling something to meet a minor expense like a faulty car engine, a busted heating system, an emergency room copay, or some other ordinary challenge. So for many, delaying even one paycheck is likely to cause a seismic shock in family finances. Many will piece it together, but they may miss credit card, mortgage, rent or other payments. In a month or so they’ll be caught up, but what about their credit rating? Catching up may mean getting current on bills, but it does not mean overcoming the ding that will inevitably appear on one’s credit score. It may take months, even

years, for some to transcend that, especially if their credit was shaky to begin with. Our nation runs on debt, our economic growth is dependent on folks going into debt, but economic growth is also dependent on people being able to pay their debt. People who live paycheck to paycheck won’t pay debt back until they get paid. And hundreds of thousands aren’t being paid because a deranged adult is having a tantrum about a wall. Four in five Americans live in debt, mostly because of mortgages and student loans ($1.5 trillion total) that strangle people’s ability to live in financial freedom. While mortgage and student loan debts are the most sig-

nificant contributions to our nation’s debt crisis, medical debt is the most frequently cited cause for personal bankruptcy in our country. The fact that so many have medical debt reflects the crisis in our national health care system. Bottom line – the shutdown not only affects people’s ability to manage their day to day finances but will also affect their long-term credit score and have consequences for those at the margins. From the data on emergencies, nearly half of all Americans are living at the margins. These are the folks who Trump and his minions say should “make arrangements” during the shutdown. They should, some say, have contingency plans. What is your contingency when you live paycheck to paycheck?

Furloughed workers will get back pay and, though impaired, will manage. What about those who work for government contractors. Nobody has their back. Many are high-rolling, highly-paid contractors who will take a hit but won’t be knocked out. Then, there are the women of color (mostly) who clean federal office buildings at night. They won’t get back pay. They won’t be compensated for their services. They will take it in the shins, and taking it means managing to live without pay for weeks. Even those who are sensitive to the economic impact of this shutdown have not spoken up for the contract workers who have been disadvantaged. A government shutdown also means a benefit shutdown for people who receive government benefits – food or housing assistance, or more. While many are optimistic that things will be adjusted, the fact is that people’s expectations are not being met and people are scrambling! The scrambling is not restricted to any race, to any party. The man who calls himself President seems to be under the mistaken impression that most government workers are Democrats. The fact, according to the Government Business Council, is that there is a pretty even split, with 44 percent of government workers being identified as Democrats or Democratic-leaning, 40 percent identified as Republican or Republican-leaning, and the remainder undecided, with a significant number of these identifying themselves as “conservative.” All of these government workers are collateral damage, thanks to 45! Our entire social and economic fabric is frayed thanks to this petulant government shutdown. Democrats, Republicans, and everyone else will pay for this thoughtless absurd public tantrum. This shutdown is aothingr more than a disturbing public outburst. Where do we go from here?

The Shutdown Today: Workers to Get Paid ‘in the Coming Days’ By Sentinel News Wire

What’s up now that the partial government shutdown ended after 35 days: WHAT’S NEW Park rangers were once again greeting visitors at some national parks across the United States and flight operations at major airports were returning to normal on Saturday, one day after a partial government shutdown came to an end. While there were signs that some government machinery was grinding back to life after a record 35 days without funding, many federal workers and their families approached the end of the shutdown cautiously, saying they were relieved they would receive paychecks again, but would continue to restrict their spending amid fears that another shutdown could happen in weeks. The National Park Service said it was working on reopening all of its parks as quickly as possible, but some parks may not open immediately depending on their staff size and complexity. The Virgin Islands National Park, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the Wright Brothers National Memorial and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park were among the parks that reopened Saturday. Grand Canyon National Park issued a statement saying it

would be fully operational this week. SHUTDOWN ENDS President Donald Trump signed a short-term deal Friday to end the shutdown after delays at the nation’s airports and widespread disruptions brought new urgency to efforts to resolve the standoff. The shutdown caused 800,000 federal employees to miss paychecks Travelers endured widespread flight delays in the Northeast as federal officials grappled with a shortage of air traffic controllers, who missed paychecks Friday because of the partial government shutdown. LaGuardia Airport in New York and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey were the hardest hit, but delays rippled across the nation’s air-travel system. Federal workers who have gone a month without getting paid during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history expressed relief Friday that a deal had been reached to end the impasse but are worried they’ll be in the same spot in a few weeks. When will they get paid? It’s unclear at this time. The White House tweeted that it will be “in the coming days.” This article originally appeared in the Los Angeles Sentinel.

How would you feel if you went without a paycheck for a month?

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is February 7 By The Charleston Chronicle

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) is February 7. Now in its 18th year, NBHAAD is a day to increase awareness about HIV among blacks/African Americans* and encourage people to get involved in prevention efforts, get tested, and get treatment if they are living with HIV. HIV diagnoses have fallen in recent years among African American women—declining 20% from 2011 to 2015. Diagnoses among young African American gay and bisexual men (aged 13 to 24) are now stable, after years of increases. This good news shows that the nation’s HIV prevention efforts are helping to reduce HIV infections among African Americans. But there is still much work to do. In 2016, African Americans accounted for 44% of HIV diagnoses, despite making up 12% of the U.S. population.** Also, HIV diagnoses are up among African American gay and bisexual men aged 2534—increasing 30% from 2011 to 2015. We need your help to make more progress in reducing HIV among African Americans. Join us on NBHAAD to promote HIV testing, prevention, and treatment and fight stigma around HIV. What Can African Americans Do? Get educated and get involved. Learn the facts about HIV and share this lifesaving information with others. Get tested. Knowing your HIV status gives you important information to help keep you and your partner healthy. CDC recommends that every American get tested for HIV at least once and those at high risk get tested at least once a year. Unfortunately, too many people live with HIV for years before they know it, which means they aren’t getting the benefits of early treatment. If people living with HIV take HIV medicine as prescribed, they can stay healthy for many years. HIV medicine also helps prevent transmission to others. To find a testing site near you, visit Get Tested, text your ZIP code to KNOWIT (566948), or call 1-800-CDC-INFO. You can also use a home testing kit, available in drugstores or online. More resources on testing are available from CDC’s Act Against AIDS campaign Doing It. Protect yourself and your partner. Today, we have powerful tools to prevent HIV and help people living with HIV stay healthy . If you are living with HIV, start treatment as soon as possible after

you get a diagnosis. The most important thing you can do is take HIV medicine as prescribed by your doctor. HIV medicine lowers the amount of virus (viral load) in your body, and taking it every day can make your viral load undetectable. If you stay undetectable, you can stay healthy for many years, and you have effectively no risk of transmitting HIV to an HIV-negative partner through sex. To make sure you stay undetectable, take your medicine as prescribed, and see your provider regularly to get a viral load test. There are many other actions you can take to prevent getting or transmitting HIV: Use condoms the right way every time you have sex. Learn the right way to use a male condom or a female condom. If you are HIV-negative but at high risk for HIV, take daily medicine to prevent HIV, called pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Talk to your doctor about post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) if you think you have been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours and are not on PrEP. Choose less risky sexual behaviors. Limit your number of sexual partners. Get tested and treated for other sexually transmitted diseases. Never share needles or other equipment to inject drugs (works). Remember, abstinence (not having sex) and not sharing needles or works are the only 100% effective ways to prevent HIV. Learn more about how to protect yourself and your partners and get information tailored to meet your needs from CDC’s HIV Risk Reduction Tool (BETA). What Can CDC Partners Do? Health departments, community-based organizations, and other partners can address stigma and discrimination, extend the reach of their HIV prevention and testing services that focus on African Americans, and link those who are HIV-positive to care. Learn how CDC can help you. * Referred to as African Americans in this feature. ** Does not include African Americans who are Hispanic/ Latino. City of St. Pete to honor Ray Charles and his song

By The Weekly Challenger

ST. PETERSBURG — The City of St. Petersburg plans to declare Feb. 15 “Ray Charles Day,” with a proclamation and a musical evening at The Studio@620. A group of presenters and local musicians will showcase the legacy of Ray Charles, whose first recorded song in 1950 was “The St. Pete Florida Blues.” While that song, also called “I Met My Baby There,” is no secret–you can find at least three versions on YouTube–it has been under-appreciated as a musical icon of the city until now. “It may be the happiest slow blues song ever recorded,” said Roy Peter Clark, a writing teacher at the Poynter Institute, who has spent two years leading this effort. “He meets the girl of his dreams, right here in St. Pete, Florida.” Actually, he met the girl while he was still a teenager, living and working in Tampa. But

when it came time to write the song, it sounded better with the name “St. Pete.” “Back then,” said Clark, “Tampa may have gotten the

In his teenage years, he lived and worked across the state with gigs in Jacksonville, Orlando and then Tampa. There he was known as R.C. Robinson. Into the 1950s and 60s, Ray Charles became one of America’s most versatile performers, a singer, musician, composer, bandleader and arranger. Over time he became master of countless musical genres: gospel, jazz, rock, country, rhythm and blues, rockabilly, soul. His version of “America the Beautiful” has been applauded as our second National Anthem. Over a half century, Ray Charles often returned to Florida with many visits to St. Pete, including performances at the Manhattan Casino, a venue for black performers in the days of segregation, but also at the Bayfront Center and at an outdoor concert at Campbell Park.

You very quickly discover that everything in Plymouth is not what it seems to be. There are plenty of plot twists that keep you guessing throughout the movie but the movie is a paint-by-the-numbers mystery and if you follow all the clues, in the end, you’ll figure it out. McConaughey’s character, Baker, is a hard-drinking ladies man who has one obsession in life; to catch a huge tuna which he has named “Justice.” (Which, by the way, is yet another clue in the movie.) get to know her better, but I am uncomfortable with the attention she draws in public. I can’t ask her to cut her hair, either. How do you tell someone there’s this huge boulder in the way of getting closer? Is there any solution to this dilemma, or should I just forget about my new friend? E.P., Harrisburg, Penn. Dear E.P.: My, my, my, you’re in a pickle, Mr. Whipple. I’d like to know if it’s the natural hairstyle of dread locs that you don’t like about your new boo, or is it that she’s not permed. Either way, natural or permed, long or short, I think when it comes to the style of one’s own hair, it’s

personal – an individual decision. Most women I know are under the impression that men prefer long, straight hair. That’s why weaves are so popular in our communities. That said, some women aren’t offended if a guy wants them to change their hairstyle. So I say tell her. You don’t have to be mean or insulting. Just mention that you’d like to see her with a particular style. It would probably help if you had a picture of the style you’d like. If she likes you, she probably won’t mind that you mentioned it. If she gets mad…well, then you’d have to decide what’s more important to you – her heart or her hair. Good luck! Alma

The Valder Beebe Show has the opportunity to intersect with the luminaries of today. My repeat time with Jermaine Dupri is my ‘energy of greatness’. Jermaine is known as The Hit Maker and he is busier than ever producing a week’s worth of free events leading up to Super Bowl LIII. Plus, he’s back and ready to crown the next big rap star in season five of Lifetime’s hit series….The Rap Game With the help of this season’s guest mentors, including Will.I.Am, Lil Jon and Xscape, Dupri is mentoring and molding talented teens on the series. The winner will receive a recording contract with his record label. The Rap Game heads into its most intense season ever and it’s all-out music mayhem! The stakes are higher than ever before and with a battle every episode, this new crop of superstars must use everything in their arsenal to keep their place on the HIT List....and in the house! From executive producers, Golden Globe® winner and Grammy® nominee Queen Latifah and Grammy® winner Jermaine Dupri, get ready for the fifth season of The Rap Game. This is the time to shine for six young rappers who will have to freestyle, flow and rhyme their way to a life-changing prize – a recording contract with Dupri’s label, So So Def Recordings. This season, artists Will.I.Am, Lil Jon, Xscape, Killer Mike, Rapsody and Jacquees join Dupri to help guide these promising rappers to music victory. Jermaine Dupri has more than 30 years of experience in the music

industry and knows what it takes to succeed. Having worked with some of the biggest young talents in music including Bow Wow, Da Brat, Kris Kross and TLC, he has a proven track record of cultivating young talent and making them into stars. With high expectations, Dupri gives it his all a nd expects nothing less from the kids and their parents in return. It’s anyone’s game on who will walk away with a record contract with his label. Dupri will also bring his expertise to help secure talent and produce Super Bowl LIVE, nearly a week’s worth of shows in downtown Atlanta leading up to the main football game on February 3, 2019. –Text provided by Dupri’s public relations team VBS: Thanks for returning to the Valder Beebe Show and so nice to have you here. Let’s talk….tell me what makes The Rap Game, which you produce so successful? JD: It’s a demo [demographic] that many people do not pay attention to. The Rap Game fills that void. VBS: You have worked with some of the most iconic acts in history. I want you to know I read nice things about you. How do you stay such a nice person in an industry that is not known for nice? JD: I read this quote by Warrant Buffet “money does not change you – money just lets people know who you actually are”. If you are a kind person when you get money, you are just going to be a kinder person. That quote resonates with me and I hope it is true. There’s more………… The Rap Game is on Lifetime TV.

My Truth, continued from front page

I arrived at home first and would wait until she got home and then we were on the phone for hours. She was my friend for life or so I thought. Unfortunately, decades have passed and I haven’t seen her since the summer after graduation. It was hard to believe that I had a “friend” who I thought would be there for life, but we grow up, life happens and things change. Just like I did as a teenager, the students in my class expressed shock and disbelief when I said that some of them may never see each other after they graduate from high school. They, like most youth, live in the moment. For that reason, parents, adults, the lady down the street and even complete strangers have to be more engaged when it comes to our youth. No matter how much we think we know, as teenagers, we don’t know the half of the story. Our youth need adults who aren’t afraid to take an interest in what they are doing and check them when they are wrong. We have to save them from their sometimes reckless and naive way of looking at life. As I look back, reflecting on my high school years, sometimes I find myself

shaking my head as I think about the many times someone’s, most likely my mom’s, prayers saved me to live another day. There was the time, as a first grader, that I tried to display my agility on the monkey bars. Instead, I landed on my head and fortunately survived without too much damage. Although some might disagree! Or there was the time that I was despondent over my dysfunctional love life so I took off walking around the streets of Tallahassee. Never mind that across town the serial murderer Ted Bundy was assaulting women on the Florida State University campus. All I knew is that I wasn’t thinking clearly and so I needed someone who was an adult, who would help me. Un for tu n ate ly today we are letting too many young people figure things out for themselves. We don’t check them when they should be checked

Butterfly I emerge from this darkness changed. Leaving behind so much of what was me; whole but with missing parts. Pushing myself through a realization that does not include you, physically. Your transformation complete. Mine ... only beginning.

and we criticize instead of having a conversation. In addition to prayers, I did have a few people who would check me when I was out of order. Our children need us to pray and also to check us. We also need to try and understand them. It’s our responsibility!
