NORTH TEXAS GEARS UP FOR SEVENTH ANNUAL GIVING DAY
With this year’s North Texas Giving Day set for September 17, area nonprofits are already gearing up for another exhilarating day of giving. In just six one-day events, Giving Day has pumped $89 million into local nonprofits and broken three national giving day records since 2009. Last year, more than 98,000 gifts totaling $26.3 million were donated, benefiting more than 1,580 local nonprofits. On September 17, donations can be made 6 a.m. to midnight to more than 1,500 certified nonprofits listed on www.NorthTexasGivingDay.org. Donations $25 and above will be amplified by $2 million in general bonus funds and prizes. Additionally and new this year, the website will feature advanced functionality, allowing donors to search for nonprofits that have their own Challenge funds – additional money raised and set aside by individual nonprofits to amplify donations even further. General bonus funds and prizes have been contributed so far by: Anonymous donor, Arlington Tomorrow Foundation, Bank of America, Communities Foundation of Texas, Community Foundation of North Texas, Cooper Institute Give for Good Campaign, The Dallas Foundation, Dallas Women’s Foundation, Hunt Consolidated’s Hunt Cares Campaign, Neiman Marcus, Sid W. Richardson Foundation, The Swan Smith Fund of Communities Foundation of Texas and the Mike and Mary Terry Family Foundation. Media sponsors so far include Dallas Morning News, MySweetCharity and WFAA. “North Texas Giving Day is a rallying cry for our entire community to support the organizations that tirelessly protect and provide for our area’s greatest resources, from animals and the environment to women and children,” says Brent Christopher, president and CEO of Communities Foundation of Texas, which founded and presents North Texas Giving Day. “The generosity that all of us experience on Giving Day not only fuels our local nonprofits financially, but energizes them to continue to do their great work.” North Texas Giving Day Donation Station events are planned to occur across North Texas throughout the day. Events are free and open to the public. Scheduled Donation Stations include: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Dallas County Donation Station and the 2nd annual Kids Give at Communities Foundation of Texas (5500 Caruth Haven Lane, Dallas, TX.) The Kids Give provides kids a chance to donate their loose change as well as do hands-on philanthropic and kid-friendly activities. Donors may watch the complimentary showcase performances by several nonprofits and purchase lunch from local food trucks. 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. – Collin County Donation Station in downtown McKinney Square (111 N. NAACP to host annual convention in Philadelphia July 11-15 (PHILADELPHIA) – From July 11th to the 15th, the NAACP will host its 106th Annual Convention in Philadelphia, PA. This year’s convention theme is “Pursuing Liberty In the Face of Injustice.” In the wake of the social and economic unrest across the country, the NAACP will focus on building a broad based agenda around voting rights, criminal justice reform, health equity, economic opportunity and education equality ahead of the 2016 presidential election. “Under the banner of ‘Pursuing Liberty In the Face of Injustice,’ the NAACP looks forward to convening thousands of civil rights, human rights and social justice activists to network and develop measurable strategies that inspire courage in participants to implement sustainable political and economic changes in vulnerable neighborhoods throughout the country” said NAACP Board Chairman Roslyn M. Brock. DCHHS provides West Nile Virus update –Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) Director Zachary Thompson and Medical Director/Health Authority Dr. Christopher Perkins has provided an update on West Nile Virus in Dallas County Commissioners Court. “West Nile season is underway and DCHHS is doing its part to protect Dallas County residents,” said Thompson. “It is very important for Dallas County residents to know what they can do to minimize mosquito exposure.” DCHHS purchased more than 10,000 mosquito dunks and issued the supply to municipalities throughout Dallas County. The dunks will be used to treat standing water and help control the mosquito population. DCHHS issued a West Nile Virus health advisory to Dallas area medical providers and laboratory staff, and also continues to issue weekly Dr. Christopher Perkins, DCHHS medical director/health s u r v e i l l a n c e authority; Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price; reports. Additionally, DCHHS informed the court the department remains in contact with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Vector-Borne Diseases to share and analyze Dallas County mosquito pool data. DCHHS urges citizens to do their part as well to help control the mosquito population. “Dallas County has experienced a record amount of rain, which in turn increases breeding sites for mosquitoes,” said Dr. Perkins. “If residents are unable to drain standing water, they should use larvicide products, such as mosquito dunks, to prevent mosquito larvae from maturing.” So far this season, five mosquito traps have tested positive for West Nile Virus. No human cases have been reported.

Civil Rights Museum lecture series features Wattley The Dallas Civil Rights Museum, housed at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, has launched its new Dr. Jerry B. Chambers Lecture series, named after the former MLK Advisory Board member who passed away in April 2015. Dr. Jerry B. Chambers was a long-time educator and Civil Rights activist with a passion for teaching students about Black history. The first speaker in the lecture series is Cheryl Brown Wattley, author of A Step Toward Brown v. Board of Education: Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher and Her Fight to End Segregation. Wattley is the Professor and Director of Experiential Education at UNT Dallas College of Law. She has also served as Professor and Director of Clinical Education at Oklahoma University College of Law in Norman, OK. Prior to teaching, Wattley practiced law for 28 years, receiving numerous awards including the Dallas Bar Association’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award in 1994. Wattley’s book was published in October 2014.

Eight students from Dallas ISD’s Science and Engineering Magnet at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center (SEM) attended the State UIL Academic meet in late May, winning a variety of individual and team awards. Sirjan Kafle won first place in Calculator Applications, allowing SEM its first win ever in that state academic championship category. SEM also had a student place first in the state in the mathematics UIL competition for the third year in a row. With all speech and academic events completed, SEM is currently fourth place in the overall state academic sweepstakes standings. Three-year-old Raeleigh Vasquez loves dolls, especially Barbie dolls, and dreams of visiting Disneyworld. Trips will have to wait as Raeleigh is in the fight of her life since being diagnosed with a rare spine cancer in January 2015. During her treatment, Raeleigh has received six blood transfusions. On June 7, Raeleigh’s daycare, Stonebrook Learning Center, is hosting an American Red Cross blood drive in her honor to help others in need of blood. “I will probably never know the six people who took an hour out of their day to donate the blood Raeleigh received,” said Brittnee Hogue, Raeleigh’s mom. “Inviting the community to give blood at this drive is one way I can give back.” Give blood in honor of Raeleigh Vasquez Sunday, June 7 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Stonebrook Learning Center, 3200 South FM 548, Royse City “Raeleigh is one strong little girl – a real fighter,” said Jeannie Massong, director, Stonebrook Learning Center. “We invite the community to drop by this blood drive to honor Raeleigh, help save a life and enjoy the cook out.” All those coming to donate at the blood drive in Raeleigh’s honor will be treated to a cook out, courtesy of Suburban Propane. Small business owners: register for free 10,000 small businesses program by 6/8 Small business owners who want to learn more about managing and expanding their businesses -- and about hiring great employees -- are invited to apply for the GoldmanSachs 10,000 Small Businesses program in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Registration for the next class/cohort in the free program, which starts on Sept. 11, closes on Mon., June 8, 2015. Interested small business owners can apply online now for the program; visit the Dallas County Community College District’s website at www.dcccd.edu/10KSB. Teaching small business owners how to run their companies more efficiently, plus providing capital to support their efforts, are key components of the 10,000 Small Businesses initiative created by Goldman Sachs, an internationally-known finance corporation. In May 2014, the 10,000 Small Businesses program came to Dallas-Fort Worth – and DCCCD delivers courses for the initiative through the Bill J. Priest Institute for Economic Development at El Centro College. The 10,000 Small Businesses initiative seeks out community colleges like DCCCD to deliver its education component of the program because they are at the center of economic development and they are accessible to many people who are in need. Several graduates of the program already are seeing positive results. Two graduates of the first cohort of students, Dustin Gadberry of Gadberry Construction and Quincy Roberts of Roberts Trucking, both were named this spring among the 2015 members of the Dallas Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” business people to watch in this area. Additionally, David Shutler, who graduated from cohort 2 and who is the president of Utility Solutions Systems Inc., was named the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 2015 Texas Small Business Person of the Year. The program involves three key components: business and management education; access to capital; and business services. The business education classes are designed to help small business owners develop a business growth plan to help them increase revenues and hire new employees. The course modules include: “You and Your Business”; “Growth and Opportunities”; “Money and Metrics”; You Are the Leader”; “It’s the People”; “Marketing and Selling”; “Operations and Processes”; “Being Bankable”; and “Action for Growth” (two parts). The 100-hour curriculum is taught in 11 sessions. Other local DFW partners in the program with DCCCD and Goldman Sachs are Accion Texas Inc. and PeopleFund; those two institutions will use funds from the program to make loans to small business owners in the area. THA response to Gov. Abbott’s Veto of S.B. 359
Legislation would have provided key tool to protect patient exhibiting mental health issue The Texas Hospital Association, on behalf of its 400-plus member hospitals, is disappointed that Gov. Greg Abbott chose to veto Senate Bill 359, which would have given physicians in hospitals an important tool to help patients in psychiatric distress and protect community safety. The bill would have allowed physicians to initiate a temporary, four-hour hold of a patient with mental illness who is judged to be a danger to self or others only if the governing body of a facility adopts a policy permitting the hold. During that time, the patient would have received necessary crisis psychiatric care, which would reduce the risk that he or she would self-harm or engage in violent or destructive acts in the community. Allowing a physician to temporarily hold a patient with mental illness also would have alleviated the burden on law enforcement officers throughout our state who have multiple and competing demands for their services. S.B. 359 included precautions and protections to preserve civil liberties while also allowing sufficient time to deliver behavioral health care to a person judged to be a danger to self or others. The bill would have required a patient to be released at the end of the four-hour period unless the physician or hospital arranges for a peace officer to initiate an emergency detention under the officer’s authority or an order of protective custody is issued. An overwhelming majority of Texas legislators voted for S.B. 359, and the bill had the support not only of Texas hospitals but also the Texas Medical Association, Sherriff’s Association of Texas and National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.

2015 - Another Summer
Another school year comes to an end, at least for those in America. A time to chill. It’s like rap group Public Enemy says, “another summer.� Well, sadly just like in 1989, the year that Chuck D spoke of, in 2014, 25 years later; it was a violent summer -- one we shouldn’t want to repeat in 2015. Many educators are exhaling and ready to enjoy a few months of relaxation; while unfortunately others are gearing up for a second tour of duty. That’s right, a summer job. The salary they bring home is just not enough to sustain their lifestyle without some form of subsidizing. Then there are the youth. It would be great

Plans were made 60 years ago for Emmett Louis Till when his mother, like so many parents living in big cities would do, sent him south from Chicago to visit relatives in Money, Mississippi. Unfortunately she never saw her son again. He was brutally beaten and murdered by men who said that he whistled at a white woman. His was a story no parents wants to tell. But more and more often, the stories are being told about the brutal deaths of young people. How about a moratorium this summer, that extends for eternity? Violence can’t and should not be the answer. Answers have to come by investing in our young. Have you made an investment yet?

he plays basketball and soccer – and he’s an excellent student. But his parents and grandparents want him to know that what he does academically is far more important than what he does on the basketball court or soccer field. In my grandson’s case, he will definitely get that reinforcement from his family. But I fear some of his friends might not receive the message. And that’s why it’s so important that educators be aware of the messages they are consciously and unconsciously transmitting to young Black boys in particular. As education consultant and prolific author Jawanza Kunjufu observes, “Visit a kindergarten class and observe Black boys in action. They’re eager, they sit in the front, they’re on task. They love learning.� But by the time they are in the 9th grade, they have absorbed a different message, one where academics are not valued as much as they should be.
Kunjufu explained, “Boys don’t drop out in the 12th grade. They physically drop out in the ninth grade, but they emotionally and academically drop out in the fourth grade.� A contributing factor, according to Kunjufu, is the composition of the teaching force. “Can you imagine African Americans may be the only group expecting someone else to educate their children?� he wrote. “White female teachers constitute 83 percent of the U.S. elementary teaching force. African American students are 17 percent of public school students nationwide, but represent only 6 percent of the teachers. “Unfortunately, African American males constitute only 1 percent of the teaching population. There are schools without one African American male academic teacher. They are employed as custodians, security guards, and P.E. teachers. Often schools will hire an African American male to be assistant principal which translates into being in charge of all male behavioral problems.� Make no mistake about it, Black girls, who are suspended or expelled from school at higher rates than White girls, also deserve special attention and should not be ignored in the rush to create new programs and opportunities for Black boys and men. Still, visit any college campus and you’ll notice the severe underrepresentation of Black males. After the graduation ceremony, one of the administrators told Grammy that Austin will be attending a challenging kindergarten in the fall and volunteered, “He’ll probably be placed in the gifted class.� To me, sharing that with the audience would have been much better than merely proclaiming that he was the fastest student in the class. He was also one of the smartest and that should not have been overlooked.

You don’t want to be known as “THOT.” And bruh; you keep posting new selfies donning them designer knockoff shades, gangster leaning in that raggedy assed truck. We can tell that you ain’t matured a bit since

Here is the MAPB press release from last week that I bet you didn’t read. “MAPB expected that Arlington Police Officer Thedrick Andres would not be indicted in the death of Juan May last June, after the two had fought on a party bus in Duncanville (at Pappadeaux Restaurant). Shortly
after Juan’s death, we met with Assistant Chief Jaime Ayala to make sure Andres was taken off patrol and his weapon taken from him.
Andres was off duty, not in uniform, when he physically fought with May after a dispute on a party bus. “Andres left the bus, went to his car, retrieved his police weapon, and shot May to death the night of June 22, 2014. “Thedrick Andres killed Juan May as a private citizen, not in any official capacity. But he was treated by Duncanville officers differently than any private citizen suspected of homicide would have been treated. He was not arraigned, not taken to jail, not given a drug or alcohol test.” I got a deal. Play on Facebook everyday and then let’s all promise to go to a protest or just meet somewhere once a month to do a good deed for some soul that could never repay us. That way I won’t complain and maybe, like in the 50’s and 60’s, some of these injustices will begin to subside. Being truthful and real (Trill) we need 140 characters in the streets and not just in tweets. Talk is cheap and we got too much of our lives invested in Facebook and Twitter.
MALVEAUX: Justice is not Blind The Last Word By Dr. Julianne Malveaux

When racist attitudes, either conscious or subconscious, are combined with the discretionary powers that law enforcement officers have, the result is a differential outcome, with African Americans more likely to be the targets of “blind justice.” Most of our politicians and leaders are exploiting subconscious racism, and pandering to explicit racial fears. Even worse, they are rewarded when they say they are “tough on crime.” Soledad O’Brien documented some of these attitudes in her most recent “Black In America” series. Included was an interview with a young Black man was stopped more than 100 times as he stood outside his college.
Of course, he’d done nothing wrong, but police officers, “doing their duty,” felt free to harass him. In a more telling segment, two young men, one Black and one White, staged the “stealing” of a bike to show how members of the public responded to watching the apparent theft. The young men were dressed similarly – T-shirts, casual pants, caps. People walked by as the White guy did everything he could to break the lock on the bike, including using a chain cutter. One even offered to help him take “his” bike, even though he acknowledged it was not his. Within moments of the Black man approaching the bike, White people, one or
two of whom called 911, surrounded him. As opposed to the benign response the White guy got, the Black guy was simply assumed to be a criminal.
How does this play out on the streets and with officers of the law? Police officers use their discretion selectively. A Black man (Eric Garner) selling loose cigarettes is manhandled, arrested, and dies when he is choked and cannot breathe. Most have seen the video by now, and wonder why Daniel Pantaleo was not charged with any crime, even though he used an illegal chokehold on Garner. Pantaleo could have told Garner to move on, or he would risk arrest. Instead, Pantaleo and his posse of lawless cowboys chose to kill the man. Would a White man be similarly
treated, or did unconscious racism play into the callous way Eric Garner was treated?
During the late 1990s, Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s “stop and frisk” policies resulted in African American men being stopped more than five times as frequently as Caucasians, even though these frisks led to nothing more than the humiliation of Black men, some simply coming off the subway or walking down the street. Hispanic men were stopped about three times as often as Caucasians. White men were stopped and frisked less frequently than others. Unconscious racism? Discretion? The law sanctions both. Stop and frisk incidents increased

JAZZ is in the air at WRR-FM - WRR-FM, the station for classical music and the arts will launch a new jazz show on Sunday June 7th at 7:00 pm. Jazz at Fair Park will be a new weekly program that can be heard throughout North Texas at 101.1 FM or worldwide at wrr101.com. Jazz music will be added to the classical format because WRR views jazz as an American form of chamber music. This important musical genre has influenced generations of classical composers and performers just as jazz has been influenced by classical music. It is also a part of the fabric of American life and is closely interwoven with Broadway, television, film and most forms of popular music that appeals to the listeners of WRR. Jazz at Fair Park will be hosted by DFW-area arts & cultural expert and jazz aficionado Vicki Meek. Let it Go, Please Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington Today is truly a day that the Lord has made and it’s apparent to me that as the world gets more and more complicated, the Word of God gets easier to understand. I oftentimes get reminded of the power of ego (mine), pride and the desire to control or more correctly, be in control. Dare I say that most people believe, certainly understand the concept of letting go and letting God. But actually doing it, they find is impossible. I know many so called Christians, as you do, who can quote scripture, but even after all these years demonstrate very little faith, if any. I know Christian control freaks who must have the last say and who just have to be right all the time. I’ve gotten caught up in rationalizing my own actions given the circumstances of the day, as if by some miracle of intelligence, I am the authority, only to recognize later that not only am I wrong, but God never entered the picture. I call it faithless behavior. It is at these times that I feel open to receiving the Holy Spirit and realize every day is full of miracles. I am blessed and highly favored and always have been. I am not in control. I never have been and if the truth be told, it’s okay. Giving one’s life to Christ requires a constant vigil against taking credit or assessing blame. When you focus on service in the name of the Lord, you really do get a chance to see all of this from a very different perspective. Service in this regard

Behavior should then have limits. Actions should have purpose and your intent should be upper most in your mind. So, let’s take a look at yesterday. You see how easy it is to get up and succumb to jealousy, pettiness, cruelty, envy and the like? It actually takes work to be humble, loving, giving and a source of truth all day every day. It’s the effort that God expects. It’s the intent He wants. If you’re first seeking Him, then the question, then how you perform, how you think, what you say and who you hang out with gets answered with a resounding amen! I’m fortunate enough to believe that I’ve known people who were angels walking. Thus, I believe there are saints among us and I don’t ever want to be so busy that I ignore them in my haste pursuing the world instead of the Word. However, from these living breathing angels, I’ve learned the battle is not necessarily over until you win. And don’t concern yourself about the victory because Christ did that some time ago. What’s that line in the movie? What we do today echoes in eternity. My eternity is set. All I have to do is get through this life thing. Therefore get up each and every day and get this before you leave your home. See me see God. You can do this one hour at a time, one day at a time, one person at a time. Let it go, please. May God bless and keep you always.

However, since New York Mayor Bill Blasio took office, the number of stop and frisk incidents has dropped by almost three quarters, again with no increase in crime. It appears that whether stop and frisk occurrences are aggressive or gentle; the incidence of crime does not increase. There are many occurrences where police can make discretionary decisions. First, they can decide whom to stop. Then, when they stop they don’t have to arrest or frisk. A simple conversation that explains the reason for the stop will yield a more favorable outcome than wrestling someone to the ground, knee in his or her back, or handcuffing someone without explaining why. cameras suggests these officers know that they are out of order in dealing with the public. Once someone is arrested, the police have the right to charge him or her with a minor crime or let them go. Finally, prosecutors can decline to bring charges. All of these decisions can be minimized or maximized, based on discretion. Justice is not blind when police officers use discretion to stop one segment of the population to harshly mistreat and let the other population slide. If police officers wonder why there is antipathy and distrust toward them in the African American community, somebody needs to tell them that their use of discretion suggests that justice is hardly blind.

Remembering Mel Waiters
In Memoriam
1956 -2015 Southern Soul and Blues star Mel Waiters was born and raised in San Antonio, TX, where in 1974 he began his performing career at local teen clubs; after a stint as a radio DJ, he was awarded a government contract to entertain at military bases across the Southwest. With the exception of sax Waiters produced, played and wrote all the material for his first CD release in 1996. The slick “Hit It & Quit It” and “Whatever It Took” gave him his first Southern hits. He followed this up with his second for the Serious Sounds with “Suki Suki Man” that got his biggest song to date with the title track. Waiters was next snatched up by Malaco Records’s Waldoxy imprint in 1997 and an even bigger hit was produced by the single “Got My Whiskey” featuring a very
polished dance sound he would continue with. Despite increasing popularity up to this point in 1999 he jumped to the top of the Soul/Blues heap with the smash “Hole In The Wall,” one of those undeniable hits that
guarantee you’ll work in the Chitlin Circuit for years to come. The single, which also featured a remix by Bigg Robb, managed to hit Billboard’s Hot Dance Music/MaxiSingles Sales chart at #24 and also gave Waiters his first placing on Billboard’s Top Blues Albums chart (#5) and the Top R & B/Hip Hop Albums chart at #83. Since that time Waiters has scored with a string of similar sounding dance songs about drinking whiskey and partying at the “hole in the wall.” His most recent disc, “Throwback Days,” dented Billboard Top 100 R & B/Hip Hop Albums chart at #93 proving longevity for the artist. Waiters also ran his own label, Britney Records, for a time and his roster includes legend Lattimore. Waiters died on May 28, 2015
