SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT...

Women and breast cancer

Cavemen Keep Sexism Alive By George E. Curry In almost every high-powered job in

… And I understand that some women believe they can have it all, and that's the crux of the problem. I have to tell you, as a man, where women are told that men have so many more advantages in society, we can't have it all. Women, you can't have it all either. Life is a series of compromises and choices.

the United States: CEOs of Fortune 500 By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson companies, Senators, university While a clinical student and professional nurse, I witnessed the suffering that breast cancer causes in the lives of so many people, particularly women. Each year, according to the World Health Organization, nearly 500,000 women lose their lives to the condition. Rep. Johnson According to health professionals, some risk factors associated with breast cancer include smoking, poor diets, obesity, elevated hormone levels and, in some cases, genetics. A lump in the breast tissue that is noticeably different can be a symptom of breast cancer and should be examined by a doctor. Women should perform regular breast self-examinations. While breast cancer in women is more than 100 times more common than in men, the survival rate for women is greater because men tend to suspect the disease at much later ages than women, usually between sixty and seventy. Some unsuspectingly ill men think that it is “only a woman’s disease.” And they are quite surprised when given a breast cancer diagnosis. When it comes to matters of health, women have always been courageous, always thinking of others and not just themselves. In 1974 the nation’s First Lady, Betty Ford, revealed that she had breast cancer and urged other women to have breast exams. Recently, the actress, Angelina Jolie, announced that she had surgery to lessen the possibility of dying from the disease. She urged other women to pay attention to their health status. In Dallas numerous medical professionals and institutions are dedicated to battling the disease. The Baylor T. Boone Pickens Cancer Hospital was the first devoted solely to cancer treatment in North Texas. Two years ago, Baylor opened the Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center. The 467,000 square foot facility is the second largest cancer treatment program in Texas. U.T. Southwestern opened the Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center in 1989. The institution has a number of cancer treatment programs, including one devoted to breast cancer. Professionals at the institution strive to meet the “individual needs” of patients, working with them and their families. At Texas Oncology, a part of the Methodist Health System, the educational, financial, emotional and health needs of patients are addressed. The nutritional needs of patients dealing with breast cancer are given significant attention. The Cancer institute of Dallas focuses on state of the art medical treatment and environmental concerns. The patient facilities were designed to lessen the emotional concerns of cancer patients who are surrounded by massive windows, trees and fields which are a part of their therapy. Continued research and medical discoveries will lead to decreasing numbers of breast cancer deaths. Until then we need to make certain that women and men are vigilant in protecting their health. While physicians and institutions perform a pivotal role in fighting the disease, there is much more that we as individuals can do to ensure longer and more productive lives.

presidents, race car drivers and even astronauts. Yet, there are some male bozos who think women should be treated as inferior beings. Conservative blogger and Fox contributor Erick Erickson is the latest man to come out of his cave.

“America Live” anchor Megyn Kelly challenged her Fox News colleague.

After the publication of a Pew study that found that women are the primary KELLY: So I'll start with you, Erick. George E. Curry or sole source of income in 40 percent What makes you dominant and me of all American households that have submissive, and who died and made you minor children, Lou Dobbs had the poor judgment scientist-in-chief? to assemble an all-male panel May 29 for “Lou ERIKSON: …This isn't healthy for society Dobbs Tonight” to discuss the report. when we think that roles of gender are completely - can be interchangeable. No one's saying women can't LOU DOBBS: Erick, your thoughts on this be or shouldn't be a breadwinner or even the study and what it portends? primary breadwinner. It's just that when we forced ourselves to this point in society where they have to ERICKSON: Lou, I'm so used to liberals be, that's not a good, healthy thing for society. telling conservatives that they're anti-science. But this is -- liberals who defend this and say it's not a bad thing are very anti-science. When you look at biology, look at the natural world, the roles of a male and female in society, and the other animals, the male typically is the dominant role. The female, it's not antithesis, or it's not competing, it's a complementary role. We as people in a smart society have lost the ability to have complementary relationships in nuclear families, and it's tearing us apart. And what I find interesting in the survey is that three-quarters of the people surveyed recognize that having moms as the primary breadwinner is bad for kids and bad for marriage, and reality shows us that's the truth. After pushback from a lot of women, many of them conservative, Erickson tried to clean up his remarks the next day on his radio show, but only made matters worse. It is a fact that children in a two parent, heterosexual household tend to have a more stable upbringing and a better chance of success than those of single parents or gay parents. This is a fact. This is not to insult gay parents. This is not to insult single parents. It's just a fact. And the, of the subset of children who are raised in a two-parent, nuclear, heterosexual household, children where the father is the one who is the leader of the family, or the breadwinner of the family, however you want to say it, tend to out-perform those where the mother is the primary provider of the family outside of the home. Those are the facts. All I have done is pointed them out.

Other women Fox contributors also weighed in. “I’m sincerely confused as to why you used behavior of animals to suggest that women shld stay at home,” Fox political analyst Krisen Powers tweeted. Katie Pavlich wrote on her Twitter account, “Not offended by idea of a strong male leading the household, offended he implied women aren’t capable of doing so.” MediaMatters, the press watchdog group, noted, “What the study highlighted, and what Erickson and his fellow Fox News commentators ignored, is the persistent class divide among mothers. According to the data, married mothers who earned more than their husbands were ‘disproportionally white and college educated.’ The single mothers, on the other hand, were ‘more likely to be black or Hispanic, and less likely to have a college degree.’ They also made significantly less: single mothers in the study had a median income of $23,000, about a quarter of the median income of couples with a female primary earner. If those single mothers were never married, their median income dropped to $17,400, hovering near the poverty threshold. “Furthermore, though more women may be ‘breadwinners,’ women still earn significantly less than men. The report showed that 75 percent of husbands still make more than their wives. In fact, women's wages decreased in 2012, causing the gender-wage gap to widen with women earning only 80.9 percent of what men earned, or about $163 dollars less per week.”

Every manuntil hasa adesignated right to month his own opinion. Every race has a right Don’t wait to its own to go action; to the doctor-therefore let no man persuade you against your Cancer, hypertension, blood clots, kidney disease and will, let no other race influence you against your own. other ills are not paying attention to a calendar and neither should you!

Ask Gwen

I am going to find the ugliest man to marry! Dear Gwendolyn: A year ago I met and started dating a good looking man. Girl, he was drop dead gorgeous. We met at a cookout my cousin had at her new house. It was a sorta ‘welcome to the neighborhood’ affair. My cousin lives in a new subdivision where most of the neighbors are recent buyers. It was a grand idea because we need to once again know our neighbors. Back in the day, neighborhoods were like one big family. When that stopped being the practice, gangs and other corrupts infiltrated good neighborhoods and turned them bad. Well, so much for how we met. This is the problem: I really thought this good

JUNE 7, 2013

looking man was going to become my husband. I even dreamed of having pretty little babies by him. But, guess what? After dating for three months, he told me he was married and his wife was pregnant – and he no longer desired my company. But again, guess what? I am thinking about telling his wife. What do you think? I am now convinced that men who look good are just too much dog in character. I intend to marry an ugly man. Rae-Rae

Dear Rae-Rae: You really have your facts wrong. Good looking men are not the only ‘dog’ characters out there. Ugly men can be more vicious than someone with a handsome body and face. Let me tell you this: Before you started dating him, you should have searched his background, but no, you were too busy gloating over his looks. Rae-Rae, think about it. In many cases every time an ugly man looks into his mirror — he beats his wife.
