MY TRUTH

By Cheryl Smith

Publisher

It’s a new year and while every day last year, I wore red, I assure you there won’t be a repeat. And to those who contributed to my wardrobe, well, don’t stop, get it, get it! Just kidding. I appreciate those who sent me red outfits from across town and around the country. It was fun, but there was also a message to the madness, if you know what I mean. Which brings me to my truth. I chose to wear red for 365 days as I celebrated 40 years of being a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. For me it was a big accomplishment because I remember when as a sophomore, with 33 other young ladies, on the Florida A&M University campus; I said I would honor the lifetime commitment and live a life of service. Now I wasn’t the only one to make a pledge or commitment and I am not the only one to honor it, but this is my truth. I really wanted to see if I could still walk the walk, instead of just talking the talk. Could I start something and then 365 days later, regardless of any obstacles, remain true?

Or would I make excuses, blame my lapses on someone or something, or just get up one day and say, “I’m not feeling like red today?” I could have made so many excuses for not wearing red. And there are those who will say that it’s not a big deal. But just think for a minute. What can you commit to for a certain length of time, and then see it through? There were those times that I said, “can’t do it.” Too often I have heard someone say, “Can’t should not be in your vocabulary.” Unfortunately however, I hear “can’t” more today than in previous years. Folks used to say, “I’ll try.” But today they have no problems saying, “Sorry, no can do.” Still others don’t get the whole sorority/fraternity “stuff” either. I’ve heard these public service organizations criticized by folks who create or join other groups that take on similar practices or antics. When I decided to seek membership in Delta Sigma Theta, I was clueless about what I was getting myself into. I knew a little about the organization that was founded in 1913. I also knew that the most dynamic women on campus were Deltas and I felt like I kinda had it going

I Messenger

365 days of red on too. What a natural fit! Then I began reading more and talking to folks. My future big sisters told me what was expected of me. They also said that my commitment didn’t end once I graduated, but instead I was signing on for life. It sounded easy then, but there was something on the horizon. There was something that could disrupt the best of plans - LIFE! Yes, life happens and how you handle and navigate through life is not totally up to you because stuff happens. And understanding that stuff happens, I, like a past president of the National Association of Black Journalists, Condace Pressley; decided to live a life where I underpromise and overdeliver. Essentially, when I am given a job to do, I do more. I exceed expectations. And I don’t make grandiose commitments that even to the most reasonable person seems to be a bit much and more than most could achieve. I wore red every day. I made it through. I honored my commitment on a number of fronts, and that’s the real deal. That’s my truth and my life.

Will you join the crusade for Bennett? Bennett College for Women is an oasis where we educate and celebrate women, and develop them into

The Last Word By Dr. Julianne Malveaux

twenty-first-century leaders and global thinkers. That was my elevator speech in the five years, from 2007 through 2012, when I led the college. It is still an oasis, a safe space for Black women and others who embrace our mission. It still educates and celebrates women. But now, in 2018-2019, my college has challenges. The accrediting body, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, has said that Bennett College is fiscally unstable. If we can’t raise a minimum of $5 million by February 1, 2019, just a few weeks from now, the school will lose its accreditation! How has it come to this? Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have had a tough row to hoe for a plethora of reasons. At Bennett, enrollment has dropped from the historic high I managed of 750 in 2009 to something under 500. Thanks to the efforts of the current president, Dr. Phyllis Worthy Dawkins, enrollment rose by 15 percent and by 26% with new students this year. That’s good, but we’ve got to be

great. What’s great? Student enrollment of 800 or more. Great is, an endowment that is robust and unique academic programs. What’s great is the preservation of an amazing Black women’s history, a history that is too often swallowed. History belongs to she who holds the pen. That was my mantra at Bennett. We need to tell Black women’s stories, and this is a place that reflects them. For every woman who embraces #MeToo, there must be another who embraces the swallowed aspects of Black women’s history. We don’t often hear, for example, of the fantastic legacy of Dr. Willa Player, the first woman President of Bennett College, and the first-African American woman to become president of a four-year fully accredited Liberal Arts College. Dr. Player was an amazing grace, a woman who was both a civil rights leader and an excellent educator. She had the audacity to invite Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to the Annie Merner Pfeiffer Chapel when no one else in Greensboro would have him. She supported the Bennett students who took part in the Woolworth’s sit-ins (a chapter of history not much elevated as the A&T Greensboro Four were the more prominent leaders). Make no mistake. Bennett women were jailed. Ben-

nett women stood up. And Dr. Player stood with them. Bennett College has a unique history, and it is a history that must be preserved. It will only be maintained if folks who love women, women’s history, and the elevation of Black women’s voices come together to find five million dollars in just a few weeks. I am writing this column to appeal to those who will help. Here’s how: •You can make a contribution to the College. Check out our website, www.bennett.edu/ donate. •Yo u can tell y o u r friends to cont r ibute. Let’s take this column and make it viral. Take it to your church, to your sorority or fraternity, to your club, to your friends. Black folks have more than $1.3 trillion in annual income. Bennett College needs less than four-tenths of one percent of that. Come on, Y’all. We can do this. If just 5000 of the high net worth black woman gave a grand, we could do this! I’m asking my sisters to join the crusade for Bennett. •You can help us find an angel to help, not only with the $5 million that must be raised but also with a long-term contribution. If you have an angel that you’d like me, President Worthy Dawkins, or President

Emerita Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole to talk with, please reach out to me at dr.j@juliannemalveaux.com. At this time, we only need unrestricted dollars by February 1, 2019. Please help. Year after year we hear stories of HBCUs that are facing financial challenges. Why is this one different and special, and what will Bennett do to ensure that it does not reencounter some of these challenges? Bennett College is prepared to engage in a strategic planning initiative to move us from surviving to thriving. We are prepared to engage in 21st-century technology to make our campus work. We need resources to move to the next step, and we are ready to raise those funds with just a little help. Are you in? Bennett College President Dr. Phyllis Worthy Dawkins has been bold, firm, and strategic, as she has faced these challenges. She says, “We look forward to working with partners who understand that their investment supports the education of deserving young women whose potential is only limited by the opportunities we give them. Our challenge is great. Our time is short. Our resolve is mighty.” I #StandwithBennett at www.bennett.edu/donate Will you? Please send your dollars and your ideas. Please help us water the oasis! 2018 YEAR IN REVIEW – COMMENTARY: The Cosby Trial

By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia

If it wasn’t the most read story of the year, the trial of comedian and former “America’s Dad,” Bill Cosby – along with his conviction, sentencing and appeal – likely proved the most written about. With its coverage of the Cosby case’s unbelievably biased and mischaracterized reporting, mainstream media outlets provided clear examples of the combustible President Donald Trump’s catch phrase: “Fake News.” When speaking with African Americans in position to potentially influence public perceptions, the Black Press found they too were misled because of heavy reliance on the coverage of mainstream. Most Americans believe that Cosby’s civil deposition was his admission of plying women with unwanted Quaaludes and then sexually assaulting them. However, most Americans were not in the courtroom from jury selection to verdict – in both trials. And relatively few heard every bit of testimony or read Cosby’s earlier civil deposition. When viewed in its entirety, the 87page civil disposition document is rich with consistent denials of wrongdoing by Cosby and explanations of events that were never reported by mass media, including that he and Andrea Constand had engaged in an ongoing consensual relationship, one which Cosby desperately hid from his wife of more than a half-century. When asked in the deposition, by Constand’s lawyer, Delores Troiani, about Quaaludes and why he received a prescription for them in the 1970s, Cosby answered: “What was happening at that time was that that was – Quaaludes — happen to be the drug that kids, young people were using to party with and there were times when I wanted to have them just in case.” Jimmy “JJ” Walker, the former “Good Times” star who co-starred with Cosby and screen legend Sidney Poitier on the film, “Let’s Do it Again,” said “everyone was using Quaaludes in the 1970s. Women wanted them, and men wanted them.” Troiani next asked, “Did you ever give

own words in the deposition, they proceeded to “have a necking session.” They kissed passionately, she “got on top of me, and we necked,” he said – none of which was found in the heavily redacted version that Troiani and District Attorney Kevin Steele have spoken about and that the mainstream media reported. It was “Bill Cosby was tried and convicted without any actual evidence also redacted at trial and that his ‘crimes’ had ever been committed, no police reports, no never heard by the jury. medical records, no collaborating witnesses, just the accusations Cosby told Troiani that of white women recalling events that occurred 30 years in the past…”— Bob Law, National Black Leadership Alliance Constand removed her hand from his penis and any of those young women the Quaaused her hand to shove Cosby’s hand furludes without their knowledge?” Cosby ther down her pants. “She was moaning,” answered, “No.” Cosby said. “She did not stop me, and I With headlines and newscasts leading want to go, ” he said. stories with “Cosby Admits to Drugging Following the encounter, Cosby preWomen,” and “Cosby Admits he Plied pared a blueberry muffin for Constand women with Quaaludes for Sex,” the and her favorite red zinger tea which she general public continues to inaccurately bit a piece of the muffin and sipped the believe that the fallen star admitted to setea. “I feel a glow. and massage it.” Bob Law of the National Black Leadership Alliance appealed to African Americans not to be hood-winked by Cosby’s conviction. “Before you rush to judgment on Bill Cosby be aware of the American Standard of Justice that is rooted in white supremacy and white privilege. The news accounts that he confessed were fake. Actually, according to spectators in the court room, there were so many contradictions, suppressed testimony as well as breach of process in jury selection, including the prohibited opening of a sealed deposition; that in reality there was no trial,” Law said in a letter signed and endorsed by the alliance and other civil rights activists. “Bill Cosby was tried and convicted without any actual evidence that his ‘crimes’ had ever been committed, no police reports, no medical records, no collaborating witnesses, just the accusations of white women recalling events that occurred 30 years in the past. And that is in opposition to the legal principle that the accuser cannot bring the action and also be the witness without any collaborating evidence,” Law said. Since the conviction and subsequent sentencing in September, Cosby’s wife Camille has written two op-eds for BlackPressUSA.com, one calling on African Americans to get to vote in the midterm election and the other about racism, hate groups and voting rights. In each, she condemned her husband’s prosecutors and the judge. “Our ancestors fought for the right to [vote]. They were jailed, were beaten, were killed for fighting for our right to vote. Yet, too often, we do not exercise that most important right. We overlook the mid-term elections because we forget how greatly they can impact our lives,” Camille Cosby said. “But, as I learned from [Montgomery County District Attorney] Kevin Steele’s election in 2015, a corrupt politician at any level is a danger to the American people, and even more so when that politician has promised to act in service of his own toxic ambitions and racial hatred,” she said.

QUIT PLAYIN’ By Vincent L. Hall

Who’s on Trial in 2019? My younger brother, Reverend Victor T. Hall probably gets mad on those occasions I make it to New York to see him. My ranting and raving about his preaching friend and my pastor, Dr. Freddie Haynes III are bad enough, but it’s followed by querying him on what he intends to preach. I can’t tell if Rev. Hall wants to keep it a secret or if divine revelation hasn’t yet arrived. How e v e r, when I pop this question on the Thursday before, there is always a noticeable pause. He’s gracious about it though. He says, “Well Vince, we’ll just see what the Spirit has to say.” Then without pause or fail, the same sermon request will follow. I take him all the way back to his Morehouse College days. On cue, my suggestion is that he remixes my all-time favorite sermon entitled; “Who’s on Trial?” In this story, the Scribes and Pharisees, who are looking to bring charges against him; confront Jesus. The “Law and Order” kind of shady White Evangelical ministers of his day brought Jesus a woman who was caught in adultery. The male suspect in this pericope of paternalism is never mentioned. #Sexism The “Religious Right” wanted to counterbalance the weight of their legalism with Jesus’ ecclesiastical liberalism. The scriptures say that Jesus immediately knelt down and

wrote in the sand before he ever uttered a word.

Theologians and old-school Black preachers conjecture that Jesus was actually writing the names and dates and places that members of this religious tribunal had been with the same woman. Then Dr. Hall, the second genius my mother created, stops the sermon mid-sentence and asks, “Who’s on trial?” The question baffles the mind and requires introspection. Doc says that at first the so-called harlot was on trial. Suddenly, the prosecutors/religious leaders attempt to indict Jesus. Jesus acted as though this woman had equal stature as a man and that was cultural and biblical heresy. Later still, Jesus turns the tables and flips the script; the pious priests were charged for their callousness. Finally, the epilogue unfurls. Now we learn that it is us, the audience who is actually on trial. We, who have thrown shade on each of the members in this cast of carnality, are guilty. We are being tried for judging all players in this narrative out of our own self-righteousness. This sermon should indict most of us at least twice.

The moral of this story can be applied to almost every situation and everybody. In 2018, most Americans have been complicit in a similar crime. As we cast an eye in retrospect, we can tally an inordinate amount of wasted time and energy on the ignorance and instability of the 46th president of these United States. He has been an international embarrassment and has given us all someone to look down on. Those who wear the Blue uniforms as an aegis of our progressive views on the poverty, immigration and jail reform, point at the people in the Red uniforms. When the Blue team had the ball, we didn’t adequately provide for the poor, we didn’t protect the DACA class and we didn’t pray for or visit the incarcerated. Worse yet, too few of us made accommodations or substantive efforts to care for the children they left in our midst. It is us, the blessed, who are on trial! In 2018, as in prior years, we are guilty of neglecting the homeless and disadvantaged. We are complicit in Trumpism because we watch as children on our border suffer the malicious prosecution that always comes with xenophobia. We have done nothing to prepare the incarcerated for rehabilitation or re-entry. Who’s on trial in 2019? If you do nothing to make a difference in the lives of those who could never repay you; you will be charged. Vincent L. Hall is an author, activist and award-winning journalist.

America’s Most Admired From the Capitol By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

It should It should come as no surprise to those who observe the American political and social landscape that former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama have recently been named in a recent nationwide Gallup Poll as the most admired man and woman in our country. Even after having departed the White House two years ago, the pair was recognized by people throughout our country for their contributions, their compassion, their intelligence and their exemplary lifestyles that have positively influenced the minds, personal choices and

interests of people around the world. Mrs. Obama’s biography, “Becoming,” was purchased by more than one million people in the first week of its release in December. It more than likely will become one of the best-selling political biographies of all time. Her book mirrors the former First Lady’s honesty, vision, and intellect. In her book, Michelle Obama reveals that she was opposed to her husband’s decision to enter politics, yet because they trusted and believed in one another she agreed that he should pursue his dream. With that deci-

sion, the Obamas began a journey which has resulted in their being among the most potent political couples in American history. 2019 marks the eleventh consecutive year that our former president has been chosen as the most admired man in the country. The only other person with more first place finishes is former President Dwight David Eisenhower who was also a military hero. It is quite interesting that exactly four hundred years after the first slaves were brought to our country in 1619, brutally treated and disdained; the two people receiving the most reverence by our population are Americans who, like the slaves, are people of color. Yet it is not because of their skin color that the Obamas are honored. The respect that they have garnered is not a result of

their ethnicities. Among other traits it is a result of their characters. While no presidency is without its imperfections, it should be noted that during the eight years that the Obamas were our nation’s first couple, there were no personal scandals associated with either of them. Their friends and those that worked for the administration did not find themselves consumed with having to testify before investigators and prosecutors, nor were there a myriad of criminal indictments. In fact, there were none. Americans have always longed for those of good character and sound judgement to lead and inspire them. They witnessed such qualities in President and First Lady Obama whom they have honored, and rightly so!

Pro-Duffers celebrate fund-raising triumph at Jubilee’s The First Noel

It was a packed house for the performance.

Story and Photos by M.P. Stone

The 35-year-old Pro-Duffers Foundation Southwest Chapter celebrated reaching its 2018 fundraising goal by buying out the Jubilee Theatre’s showing of The First Noel. Keith Richardson, CFO of The Foster Kidd Foundation said, “The Pro-Duffers Foundation organizes fund-raising activities throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth community and award deserving youth through scholarships. Each year scholarships are given to recipients of our youth programs and to Paul Quinn College and other HBC’s. This foundation was named after and in honor of our Southwest Chapter founder, Dr. Foster

Kidd, DDS.” According to their mission statement, The Pro-Duffers main purpose is to introduce young people to the sport of golf and to help those who seriously want to pursue the sport professionally. “Our foundation also promotes and supports the development of self-esteem, academic excellence and character in addition to sportsmanship,” added former Chapter President, Truman Thomas. Jerry Woodard, Vice-Chair of the Pro-Duffers Civic Committee said, “Our Southwest Chapter also founded First Tee of Greater Dallas which was another major accomplishment, in addition to raising nearly $70,000 this year. Tonight, we have gathered in celebration of reach-

One last fling, maybe

Dear Alma, I’m 25 and getting ready to marry a wonderfully fantastic man. We are totally compatible and get along in every way. Our sex life is amazing, and I really love him. However, I recently met a new man to whom I am unbelievably attracted, but just physically. I know deep inside that I want to be with my fiancé forever. My question to you is: Would it be so wrong to have sex with my new friend just one time? So far we’ve only gone to lunch and out for drinks. I see this as my last chance to hook up before I say “I do.” Vonda M., Wheeling, W.V.

is easy. All you want is for me to tell you, “Sure, girl, go on and get your swerve on before your wedding night.” NOT! Keep it moving, sister, cause you won’t find that train on the Ask Alma rail-

new husband or yourself by making the worst mistake of your life. What if you do it and you don’t have a good time. Then, you’d be mad you put yourself out like that. What if you do it and you like it? Then you’ll want more, and you couldn’t because you’d be married. Back up, take a chill pill and remind yourself of the morals that I’m sure are somewhere within your reach. You’ve found a great fiancé, and you want a quickie before you march down the aisle. You’ve made that perfectly clear. However, my brain is on pause and I just have to say – the real question here should be: Are you sure you’re even ready to get married? Alma
