Expo at African American Museum encourages healthy living

MY TRUTH

by Cheryl Smith, Publisher

365 days of red

It’s a new year and while every day last year, I wore red, I assure you there won’t be a repeat. And to those who contributed to my wardrobe, well, don’t stop, get it, get it! Just kidding. I appreciate those who sent me red outfits from across town and around the country. It was fun, but there was also a message to the madness, if you know what I mean. Which brings me to my truth. I chose to wear red for 365 days as I celebrated 40 years of being a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. For me it was a big accomplishment because I remember when as a sophomore, with 33 other young ladies, on the Florida A&M University campus; I said I would honor the lifetime commitment and live a life of service.

Living healthy has to be a priority says organizers of the Don’t Believe the Hype Foundation’s 2nd Annual Realizing the Dream: Healthy Living Expo which will take place on January 21, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the African American Museum located at 3536 Grand Avenue in Fair Park, Dallas, Texas 75210. The free community event is in conjunction with the City of Dallas’ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration. The expo will be open immediately following the historic annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day parade in South Dallas. “Americans are constantly bombarded with content about healthy

living and because of the sheer volume of information circulating, it can be a challenge to decipher what is accurate vs. inaccurate,” said Cheryl Smith, founder of the Realizing the Dream:

Healthy Living Expo and Don’t Believe the Hype Foundation. “This family-friendly expo provides the perfect opportunity for people to start the New Year off right by learning the proper methods to be healthy physically mentally, spiritually, financially, socially and holistically.” Ms. Smith said she is pleased organizers were able to embrace a healthy program that is beneficial and educational. The expo will feature “Friendship-West Baptist Church presents the Pastor’s 31-Day Health Challenge.” “I contacted Dr. Haynes (senior pastor) and told him I wanted to be included,” said Ms. Smith. “We have to address the health

TEXAS METRO NEWS - JANUARY 2, 2019

Will you join the crusade for Bennett? THE LAST WORD By Dr. Julianne Malveaux Author, economist and president emerita of Bennett College.

Bennett College for Women is an oasis where we educate and celebrate women, and develop them into twenty-first-century leaders and global thinkers. That was my elevator speech in the five years, from 2007 through 2012, when I led the college. It is still an oasis, a safe space for Black women and others who embrace our mission. It still educates and celebrates women. But now, in 2018-2019, my college has challenges. The accrediting body, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, has said that Bennett College is fiscally unstable. If we can’t raise a minimum of $5 million by February 1, 2019, just a few weeks from now, the school will lose its accreditation! How has it come to this? Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have had a tough row to hoe for a plethora of reasons. At Bennett, enrollment has dropped from the historic high I managed of 750 in 2009 to something under 500. Thanks to the efforts of the current president, Dr. Phyllis Worthy Dawkins, enrollment rose by 15 percent and by 26% with new students this year. That’s good, but we’ve got to be great. What’s great? Student enrollment of 800 or more. Great is, an endowment that is robust and unique academic programs. What’s great is the preservation of an amazing Black women’s history, a history that is too often swallowed. History belongs to she who holds the pen. That was my

mantra at Bennett. We need to tell Black women’s stories, and this is a place that reflects them. For every woman who embraces #MeToo, there must be another who embraces the swallowed aspects of Black women’s history. We don’t often hear, for example, of the fantastic legacy of Dr. Willa Player, the first woman President of Bennett College, and the first-African American woman to become president of a four-year fully accredited Liberal Arts College. Dr. Player was an amazing grace, a woman who was both a civil rights leader and an excellent educator. She had the audacity to invite Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to the Annie Merner Pfeiffer Chapel when no one else in Greensboro would have him. She supported the Bennett students who took part in the Woolworth’s sit-ins (a chapter of history not much elevated as the A&T Greensboro Four were the more prominent leaders). Make no mistake. Bennett women were jailed. Bennett women stood up. And Dr. Player stood with them. Bennett College has a unique history, and it is a history that must be preserved. It will only be maintained if folks who love women, women’s history, and the elevation of Black women’s voices come together to find five million dollars in just a few weeks. I am writing this column to appeal to those who will help. Here’s how: •You can make a contribution to the College. Check out our website, www.bennett.edu/donate. •You can tell your friends to contribute. Let’s take this column and make it viral. Take it to your church, to your sorority or fraternity, to your club, to your friends. Black folks have

more than $1.3 trillion in annual income. Bennett College needs less than four-tenths of one percent of that. Come on, Y’all. We can do this. If just 5000 of the high net worth black woman gave a grand, we could do this! I’m asking my sisters to join the crusade for Bennett. •You can help us find an angel to help, not only with the $5 million that must be raised but also with a long-term contribution. If you have an angel that you’d like me, President Worthy Dawkins, or President Emerita Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole to talk with, please reach out to me at dr.j@juliannemalveaux.com. At this time, we only need unrestricted dollars by February 1, 2019. Please help. Year after year we hear stories of HBCUs that are facing financial challenges. Why is this one different and special, and what will Bennett do to ensure that it does not reencounter some of these challenges? Bennett College is prepared to engage in a strategic planning initiative to move us from surviving to thriving. We are prepared to engage in 21st-century technology to make our campus work. We need resources to move to the next step, and we are ready to raise those funds with just a little help. Are you in? Bennett College President Dr. Phyllis Worthy Dawkins has been bold, firm, and strategic, as she has faced these challenges. She says, “We look forward to working with partners who understand that their investment supports the education of deserving young women whose potential is only limited by the opportunities we give them. Our challenge is great. Our time is short. Our resolve is mighty.” I #StandwithBennett at www. bennett.edu/donate Will you? Please send your dollars and your ideas. Please help us water the oasis!

Miles’ Musings: “MURDER”

The history of guns dates back to the 10th Century when the Chinese used combustible agents to fire shrapnel out of bamboo shafts toward an enemy—thus, the firearm. Fast-forward to modern handguns. If you place your two hands together, fingertip-to-fingertip, the average modern handgun could easily be placed in the palms of even a small pair of hands. When one considers roughly 40,000 lives lost to gun violence in a year, about the same number as highway fatalities, half of opioid overdoses, it’s hard to believe that such a relatively small device could be the tool of so much carnage. The primary tool of murder by firearm is not the rifle, the AR-15, or the Uzi, but the handgun-- the 9mm, the 45 automatic, and the 38 among others. The handgun is easily concealed in a holster, a purse, a glove box, under the driver’s seat, in a pocket or the waistband of your jeans. Now with the ever-popular concealed weapon permit, it’s all legal, and the Stand Your Ground laws make it even more appealing to own and carry. The history of murder, according to the book of Genesis, dates back to brothers Cain and Abel. William Shakespeare’s most famous murder scene may have been Julius Caesar’s at the hands of Senators of the Roman Senate. American history is ripe, if not rich, with murder. Presidential assassinations, Rock Stars, Civil Rights leaders, mobsters, gang bangers, and countless innocent victims struck down by the squeeze of a trigger on a handgun. I first learned about “murder” on television and in movies

where motive and opportunity were always used to build plot and drama. Raymond Burr in “Ironside” and “Perry Mason”, Angela Lansberry in “Murder She Wrote,” Peter Falk in “Columbo.” Then there were the cop shows—"Dragnet,” “NYPD Blue,” “Hawaii Five-0,” and “Law and Order” to name a few. Then came the Westerns, affectionately known as “Shoot ‘Em Ups” with a murder in nearly every episode. One

could argue, Westerns made “gunplay” more popular than any other genre of entertainment. What I learned was that “murder” comes in various forms, varieties, and degrees, as it is technically a legal term. “Murder” is the intentional or premeditated, and unlawful taking of another human life. Merriam Webster simply says “murder” is, “the crime of deliberately killing a person”, commonly referred to as 1st Degree Murder. Merriam Webster also says, “manslaughter” is the crime of killing a person without intending to do so,” or, “the unlawful killing of a person without express or implied malice,” known as 2nd Degree Murder.

All categories of murder fall under the broad heading of “Homicide”, “the act of killing another person.” Murder, or taking a human life, is arguably the most serious crime a person can commit. This, regardless of means or method, be it stabbing, strangulation, poisoning, or shooting, so when candidate Trump said “I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn’t lose any voters.”, I knew then that this was a depraved, morally corrupt, spiritually bankrupt individual, with no sense of right or wrong. I knew then that Donald Trump, the person, was completely absent of conscience, and therefore, quite dangerous. Interestingly, while researching “murder”, I stumbled on the phrase, “to get away with murder”, meaning to succeed in doing whatever one chooses without being punished or suffering any consequences. I found the meaning strikingly relevant to today’s political climate. Today it seems, powerful men in high places, or as they’re referred to in Ephesians 6:12, “spiritual wickedness in high places,” are being exposed for their wrong doing, for their association with the same wretched man, and for somehow believing they will get away with murder. I for one, was not surprised when, Trump referred to Neo-Nazis and Klansmen in Charlottesville as “good people,” even as a young woman lost her life as a result of the violent protests. I was not surprised by Trump’s depraved indifference to the murder of Washington Post journalist, Jamal Khashoggi. And, I was Please see MURDER, page 6

Murder, continued from page 5 not at all surprised by President Trump’s indifference to the death of a second Guatemalan child while in U. S. Border Patrol custody. “They say I have the most loyal people…” said Donald Trump proudly, “…where I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn’t lose any voters. It’s like incredible!” Who else would find humor in such a detestable notion but a sociopath? Of equal importance, who would allow someone clearly displaying mental disorder, to go unchecked about the business of the nation? Senators Ryan, McConnell, Cruz, Menendez and other silent Republican senators should be leery, as anyone found to have witnessed a murder but

having done nothing to prevent it may in fact be held, in some way, to some extent and to some degree, responsible for that life. As for retiring Secretary of Defense, Gen. Mattis, “retiring in protest” may be a grand gesture, however, it may go down in history as turning a blind eye to crimes in progress. That said, beware the Ides of March! www.milesjaye.com

Katherine Jackson, reportedly gravely ill By Stacy M. Brown

NNPA Newswire Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia Katherine Jackson, the matriarch of the famed Jackson family, is reportedly gravely ill, with family members already fighting over her share of the late Michael Jackson’s estate. Outlets like Radar Online, the National Enquirer and even Atlanta Black Star have reported that Jackson, 88, is facing brain surgery. Previously, the outlets reported that Jackson has had several strokes and other ailments that have left her wheelchair-bound and dependent upon caretakers. The latest reports also suggest that several of Jackson’s children have engaged in a fierce battle to control their mother’s share of the late King of Pop’s vast estate – valued at more than $1 billion. “Now everybody in the family is jockeying for position!” a source told the National Enquirer. Although a rep denied it, two family insiders claimed the great-grandmother has suffered from excruciating headaches, leading to a hospital visit in late summer, the tabloid reported. “Katherine is in dire condition,” another source told RadarOnline. com. “Now everybody in the family is jockeying for position.”

“Her doctor thought she had a stroke,” another unnamed source – described as an insider – told Radar. According to another source, Katherine remained hospitalized for about a week. “More tests were conducted to see if her condition might be something even more serious – like a brain tumor,” the source said. The family insider said doctors discovered a golf ball-sized growth on Katherine’s brain and declared she must undergo surgery as soon as possible. While some doubt the veracity of unnamed sources, several members of the Jackson family are well-known for speaking off the record and requesting anonymity. Michael Jackson, who died in 2009, provided stories about himself and his family to the National Enquirer, according to his former pub-

licist and others around the Jacksons. Earlier this year, family patriarch Joseph Jackson died at the age of 89 after a bout with cancer. Multiple outlets had reported that Joseph had been alienated from the family after he publicly tried to cash in on Michael Jackson’s 2009 death by employing look-a-likes and holding press conferences to push new music and other material while the family mourned the “Thriller” singer. Battles over the King of Pop’s fortune reportedly began moments after he was pronounced dead, with Katherine, Latoya and others searching his Los Angeles home and beseeching Jackson’s former nanny to tell them where cash may have been stashed inside. Now, sources have told news outlets that Katherine’s children are elbowing each other to ensure they get their slice of the pie before — and

Katherine also forks out $12,000 to son Jermaine, 64, and nearly $10,000 to pay the rent for some of Jermaine’s and Randy’s children. “Some of those people want her to live so they can stay on the gravy train,” a source told the tabloid. “Others would like to see her go, thinking they’ll get even more from her estate!” Born in Barbour County, Alabama, on May 4, 1930, Katherine and Joseph married in 1949 and had 10 children together including superstars Michael and Janet. She’s made very few recent public appearances – once at her grandson’s concert in Los Angeles; later at another show featuring one of her granddaughters and at Joseph Jackson’s funeral in August. Katherine and Joseph Jackson had nearly 30 grandchildren and, despite varying media reports, the two never divorced. On the latest news, a Jackson source told NNPA Newswire that “Katherine is in good hands. Don’t believe the hype.”

The 35-year-old Pro-Duffers Foundation Southwest Chapter celebrated reaching its 2018 fundraising goal by buying out the Jubilee Theatre’s showing of The First Noel. Keith Richardson, CFO of The Foster Kidd Foundation said, “The Pro-Duffers Foundation organizes fund-raising activities throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth community and award deserving youth through scholarships. Each year scholarships are given to recipients of our youth programs and to Paul Quinn College and other HBC’s. This foundation was named after and in honor of our Southwest Chapter founder, Dr. Foster Kidd, DDS.” According to their mission statement, The Pro-Duffers main purpose is to introduce young people to the sport of golf and to help those who seriously want to pursue the sport professionally. “Our foundation also promotes and supports the development of self-esteem, academic excellence and character in addition to sportsmanship,” added former Chapter President, Truman Thomas. Jerry Woodard, Vice-Chair of the Pro-Duffers Civic Committee said, “Our Southwest Chapter also founded First Tee of Greater Dallas which was another major accomplishment, in addition to raising nearly $70,000 this year. To-

night, we have gathered in celebration of reaching our fund-raising goal and to thank our sponsors who helped us in our 2018 endeavors.” The evening’s pre-performance reception in Fort Worth was impeccably planned and fulfilled by LaWonda Peoples, owner of Eventfully Yours Events in North Richland Hills. BMW of North America is one of fifteen other Pro-Duffer Southwest Chapter sponsors. Texas Trust Bank is another major sponsor along with Worthington National Bank, who’s CEO Greg Morris and other staff were in attendance. “Former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk was the sponsor of the recent fundraiser at Trinity Golf Course in Dallas,” said former Assistance Tournament Chairman, Bryan O’Rilley. “Our chapter has over 50 members and I am so appreciative of Dale Hogg for encouraging me to join.” Pro-Duffers Foundation guest Bryan Bullitt of Frisco says he plays for a couple of hours on Tuesday mainly for relaxation, mental stimulation and socializing. “I look forward to it every week and enjoy playing a friendly game of golf on my day off,” said Bullitt. My Truth,

continued from front page Now I wasn’t the only one to make a pledge or commitment and I am not the only one to honor it, but this is my truth. I really wanted to see if I could still walk the walk, instead of just talking the talk. Could I start something and then 365 days later, regardless of any obstacles, remain true? Or would I make excuses, blame my lapses on someone or something, or just get up one day and say, “I’m not feeling like red today?” I could have made so many excuses for not wearing red. And there are

those who will say that it’s not a big deal. But just think for a minute. What can you commit to for a certain length of time, and then see it through? There were those times that I said, “can’t do it.” Too often I have heard someone say, “Can’t should not be in your vocabulary.” Unfortunately however, I hear “can’t” more today than in previous years. Folks used to say, “I’ll try.” But today they have no problems saying, “Sorry, no can do.” Still others don’t get the whole sorority/fraternity “stuff” either. I’ve heard these public service organizations criticized by folks who create or join other groups that take on similar practices or antics.

TEXAS METRO NEWS - JANUARY 2, 2019 When I decided to seek membership in Delta Sigma Theta, I was clueless about what I was getting myself into. I knew a little about the organization that was founded in 1913. I also knew that the most dynamic women on campus were Deltas and I felt like I kinda had it going on too. What a natural fit! Then I began reading more and talking to folks. My future big sisters told me what was expected of me. They also said that my commitment didn’t end once I graduated, but instead I was signing on for life. It sounded easy then, but there was something on the horizon. There was something that could disrupt the best of plans - LIFE! Yes, life happens and how you handle and navigate through life is not

Butterfly I emerge from this darkness changed. Leaving behind so much of what was me; whole but with missing parts. Pushing myself through a realization that does not include you, physically. Your transformation complete. Mine ... only beginning.

totally up to you because stuff happens. And understanding that stuff happens, I, like a past president of the National Association of Black Journalists, Condace Pressley; decided to live a life where I underpromise and overdeliver. Essentially, when I am given a job to do, I do more. I exceed expectations. And I don’t make grandiose commitments that even to the most reasonable person seems to be a bit much and more than most could achieve. I wore red every day. I made it through. I honored my commitment on a number of fronts, and that’s the real deal. That’s my truth and my life.

“Excellence is our tradition... Service is our legacy”
