MY TRUTH by

Who are you, really?

A friend was really distraught recently because after years of working for a major corporation in a position of community engagement and marketing; he is no longer employed. BIG THINGS HAPPENING at our HBCU PAUL QUINN COLLEGE

OUR HISTORY

Dear Jerry Jones, Oh say can YOU see? You have fumbled an opportunity to intercept a lie and use your privilege to score for justice. As a life-long fan of the Dallas Cowboys, who once enjoyed season tickets, it’s heartbreaking that you have taken a stand on the wrong sideline of history.

Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III pens open letter to Cowboys owner

As training camp opened you used your mighty microphone to passionately pronounce that there is no room on the Dallas Cowboys for the right to protest for right during the national anthem. Your “MASSA Complex has shown your boys where the “gun line (check out the movie “Life) is! And they had better not cross it! Your quarterback, who went to school in the same state where Emmett Till was lynched, Fannie Lou Hamer was brutally beaten by police, Medgar Evers was asSee HAYNES, page 2 www.texasmetronews.com

Dr. Haynes pens open letter to Jerry Jones, continued from front page sassinated; and remains a place of wicked white supremacy, vicious police misconduct, and a justice system that is criminal, knows his place and has echoed your sentiment and committed a terrible turnover for freedom. Oh say, did he see white Mississippi police officer Daniel Starks tasing a handcuffed Black man for no reason? I held out hope that given your track record as a game-changing maverick and successful businessman that you would use your privileged platform to actually take a stand for what the flag symbolizes, “liberty and justice for all.” You have been fiercely independent as an NFL owner but you allowed 46-1 to punk you and the NFL while he was pledging allegiance to Vladimir Putin and Russia. Oh say can you see? Your friend in the White House has emboldened racists, put a white supremacist (whose policies reinforce the racial injustice Colin Kaepernick was taking a knee for) over the justice department and signaled to police that brutality is ok. I guess that’s why you reaffirmed your partnership with Papa John’s Pizza while saying nothing to denounce the ugly bigotry dripping from the lips of the former owner? Colin Kaepernick took a knee during his last season as a quarterback for the 49ers because he was sick and tired of Black sisters and brothers dying, mothers crying and police departments lying. In the tradition of Paul Robeson, Althea Gibson, Wilma Rudolph, Muhammad Ali, John Carlos and Tommie Smith, Curt Flood, Serena Williams, LeBron James and others; he used his platform to raise consciousness and speak truth to power on behalf of the powerless who have no platform. Oh say can you see? As owner of America’s team that is comprised of almost 80% African Americans did you know that “This is America” for them: www.texasmetronews.com

Police violence and homicide persistently and disproportionately terrorize Black communities. A new study reveals the proportion of black bodies in America killed by police is significantly higher than previous research suggested. Across the country, Black men are over three times more likely to be killed by police than white men, according to a study published in the American Journal of Public Health. In an analysis of all male homicides between 2012 and 2018, 8 percent occurred at the hands of police, who serve and protect YOU, researchers found. Of nearly 6,300 reported deaths during the six-year count, almost 1,800 were black. “This is America.” Oh say can you see, Jerry? Police killings are highest among Black men across the United States. Lead author Frank Edwards is sadly correct when he interprets, “Police operate completely differently in different places,” he said. “How police operate is often determined by the race of the person they’re interacting with and the racial compositions of the places they work in.” Oh say can you see? The vast majority of your players live in this America. Yes, their contracts may have allowed them to move into nicer neighborhoods but their black skin still means they are seen as suspects who pose a threat. Sadly, your son Stephen, seconded your motion and brazenly declared if you want to be a Dallas Cowboy you will stand for the national anthem. This is one instance where the blatant hypocrisy of your organi-

zation just may exceed your racist insensitivity. On “America’s Team” you can brutally beat your wife, girlfriend, or kids. You can drink and drive, you can take drugs and steroids, but if you peacefully protest, you cannot be a Dallas Cowboy!? Oh say can you see? It’s evident, Jerry, that you never had to give Stephen “The Talk” and tell him how to behave in the presence of police officers. Have you Jerry? Ask your Black players about “The Talk.” Oh say can you see and have you noticed the news accounts where Black people have the police called on them for breathing, going to Starbucks, lounging in the university common area where they are enrolled, selling water as an 8-year-old, eating at the Waffle House and doing community service as a sorority. The brilliant actor Ving Rhames shared his terrifying experience with racism that resulted in police putting a gun in his face at the front door of his own home in Brentwood, CA because a neighbor called 911 saying that he was breaking into what is his own house. Have you or Stephen ever had the police called on you because of the color of your skin? Have you or Stephen ever been stopped by the police and worried that you wouldn’t come out of the stop alive? Oh say can you see, Jerry? I wish you had the courageous empathy of the gifted Anne Hathaway. She gets it. Hathaway is outraged by the fatal stabbing of 18-year-old Nia Wilson by a white man. The Oscar award-winning actress used her privilege and prestige

to dedicate an Instagram post honoring the life of the young Black woman. Wilson and her sister, who survived the attack, were stabbed at the BART MacArthur Station in Oakland, Calif., on July 22. But Hathaway’s post was more than a passive tribute to Wilson — it was a wake-up call and a courageous critique of those who are oblivious to black pain and hide behind their “white privilege” and fail to take action in the face of violence, injustice and racism. Describing Wilson’s murder as “unspeakable,” the Ocean’s 8 star acknowledged her own privilege while calling for white people to get off the sidelines of indifference and privilege and step up. Oh say can you hear her, Jerry? “White people — including me, including you — must take into the marrow of our privileged bones the truth that ALL black people fear for their lives DAILY in America and have done so for GENERATIONS,” she wrote. “White people DO NOT have equivalence for this fear of violence. Given those givens, we must ask our (white) selves — how ‘decent’ are we really? Not in our intent, but in our actions? In our lack of action?” She ended the message with the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag, as well as #AntiRacist, #NoExcuse, #SayHerName, and #EarnTheRightToSayHerName. Jerry, she’s a winner. Anne Hathaway is truly free and brave. She is doing what the wisdom writer said in Proverbs 31:8-9: “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed. Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice.” Oh say can you see, Jerry! Peace and Power, Former Cowboys fan and NFL follower,

Increasingly, large numbers of Americans are fondly recalling the days when President Barack Obama occupied the White House, and they long for the civility that our country experienced when he was our commander-in chief. Many of them did not vote for our former president and disagreed with him on a number of policy issues, but they were not troubled with his personal life, nor did they witness constant blistering attacks by him on those that questioned his administration. They appreciated his calmness in the course of his governance. Like many former presidents,

Yet, he felt compelled recently to speak out about the United States and the world during a ceremony in South Africa where he was invited to be the featured speaker at a celebration of the 100th birthday of the late global icon, President Nelson Mandela. In his address, President Obama warned of a present global climate in which elected officials sowed seeds of resentment and fear, and were jeopardizing global stability, and relationships that had created a decades-long climate in which the world had not experience relentless strife, or nuclear conflagration. President Obama stated that it was shameful how various leaders in the world knowingly misled people who had elected

roof. I’m happy.” And sometimes I struggle to keep others from stealing my joy. Years ago I heard the aforementioned author speaking about being alone. The place she described was so soothing to me. Maybe because I have always loved the writings of the phenomenal Nikki Giovanni, or simply because her words made so much sense. So often we are on the go that we don’t take that time to be alone with our thoughts, to hear our hearts beat or the sound we make when we inhale and exhale. For some, being alone, with that silence or their own thoughts, would be enough to drive some stir crazy. It helps, however, if you know who you are. When you walk into a room, who or what walks in with you? Would you suddenly become invisible should the who or what suddenly disappeared from your life? Are you lost without the title? I submit to you that the more self-actualized happy person is the one who is about more than the position they hold or the awards they received for doing a job. instead was a passion. That’s what I saw in La’Wonda Peoples. Sure she worked for American Airlines. She was good at her job, but there was more to her. You didn’t just see her in the “communities” when there was a need to represent what some called the “plantation.” La’Wonda was in and of the community and it showed. A graduate of Clark Atlanta University (I wonder if that was the name, back in the day when she walked the campus), La’Wonda showed an intense love for HBCUs, even serving on the D/FW’s UNCF Council. Maybe some of her inner strength, spirituality and commitment came from her Selma, Alabama roots or her association with folks who were “down home,” and committed to making this world a better place. Maybe that’s why when she retired from American Airlines and folks saw that AA didn’t appear as committed and giving; they still had great love for her because she was bigger than AA to us. The same could be said of Cheryl Brown. Yep, that’s the one, from Coca Cola, where she worked for almost 30 years! Just thinking about these two young ladies should make one shake their heads

in wonderment and say thanks every time they see them because clearly they had an impact on their employers giving and positioning in the market place. These two young ladies, who were involved in their churches and surrounding communities before, during and after their employment, don’t have to say anything. We see the void. Cheryl also served on the D/FW UNCF Council. Her volunteer efforts continue to be extensive and at various levels of leadership. Whether its United States Conference of Mayors, Big Thought, the City of Dallas and the TexPREP science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program, Friends of Fair Park, and others, Cheryl has been very effective. Both she and La’Wonda are also entrepreneurs who are constantly called on for their skills and leadership. But they have made up for the void in other ways because they are deeply entrenched and continue to give. They weren’t ghosts in our community before and they aren’t today. Who they are is who we know. They aren’t defined by who they work for. Do you know who you are? Are you happy?

You act like you don’t want to listen, When I’m talking to you You think you outta do baby, Anything you wanna do You must be crazy baby, You gotta be outta your mind As long as I’m paying’ the bills, I’m paying’ the cost to be the boss -

B.B King

Riley B. King sung that song every time I saw him as a teenager at the Longhorn Ballroom in Dallas. Coincidently, it was his opening song the first time I paid to see him as an adult at Las Vegas’ Caesar’s Palace. And as much as black folk have heard the lyrics, the meaning and application still gets lost. Parenthetically, the “Historic Longhorn Ballroom is about to reopen and one of the first shows will be local musician and artist, R.C. Williams. Do something productive on Facebook; search The “Gritznic, buy tickets and support this brother. We make erry’body else rich and neglect our own! If you don’t support my nephew, I may stop speaking to you. LOL. B. B. King made a mint with the guitar he named Lucille. He released more than 50 albums and traveled the world several times. King took Lucille with

R.C. and Erykah Badu him to play in more than 100 shows for inmates. He and Lucille recorded “B.B. King Live in the Cook County Jail, and its considered his best album. B.B. and Lucille played to Sing Sing Prison on Ossining New York. But B.B. would tell you that since he paid for Lucille, she has to do some of what he wants her to do. Black folks should follow his lead. You paying the cost, be the damned boss! What irritates me is that as Black folk we live this principle in our families but not our economy. We either choose or ignore to enforce that rule past our front doors. And when it comes to paying the cost to be the boss, no one in this country pays like we do. This year African-Americans will spend 1.2 trillion ($1,200,000,000,000.00) in this national economy. So how is that the Black folks live in a nation that ranks first in the world, ac-

cept being treated like second-class citizens, be educated less than our third world neighbors, earn a fourth less than our white counterparts, be forced to plead the fifth amendment, while claiming to be born with a sixth sense and in search of a seventh Heaven? Hell naw, I can’t say that again‌Reread it!

www.texasmetronews.com

We pay taxes, buy insurance and real estate; and finance it all at higher rates. We consume more than any race of people per capita. If we were a nation we would be the 15th wealthiest nation in the world. But the average dollar stays in our community less than seven minutes. As long as the circulation of the black dollar is that weak, we ain’t bossin’, we just flossin’. We allow everyone to peddle in our community, and we buy it. We spend money we don’t have on things we don’t need, and barter for the basics. Without us this economy would shrivel up and die. Yet we own no hospitals, or banks. By consumption we execute more chickens each year than there are people in the world. But Bo Pilgrim is still king of the yard. If you don’t support a Black doctor, lawyer, barber or beautician, who do you think does? If we just took over the hair care products and donut shops in Dallas, we could make 10 new millionaires and start 100 new businesses. Bosses sign the front of the check‌ Not the back!!! Next time you hear B. B. King and Lucille pluck this familiar tune, put your index finger in the air like you do at church and shuffle your way to the closest exit. You ought to be ashamed to even hum the song. You play too damn much!!! Vincent L. Hall is an author, activist and award-winning journalist.

President Obama’s lament continued from front page them, and were unrepentant when they were caught deliberately spreading untruths. The world envisioned by President Mandela was in jeopardy, President Obama stated. That world promoted respect for all people, and the creation of a society which was based upon decency, reflection, hope and the acceptance of those

fleeing hardship and deadly conflicts in their native countries. Respectful of decorum, President Obama did not name any particular world leader as a target of his remarks. But many who heard his words knew of those he spoke, and the countries that they lead. On the issue of immigration, President Obama said that preventing

people from entering another country should not be based upon their color, their language or their religious beliefs. Like President Mandela, who suffered 27 years of imprisonment and existed prison with no sense of hatred towards his jailers, President Obama called for equality for all people regardless of their genders, their races or their political beliefs.

A world in which leaders of nations threaten others with destruction makes little sense and only increases the possibility of frightening conflict. Like President Obama, and President Nelson Mandela before him people of sound mind and warm hearts must strive for peace, for a world in which all people and their views are considered and respected.

THE LAST WORD

By Dr. Julianne Malveaux

Senate Republicans hope to get Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court, confirmed before October 1, when they will reconvene. Senate Democrats hope to hold on to any vote until after the November election when Democrats have the possibility of taking a majority in the Senate and giving Republicans a dose of their own medicine. Bravo to Senate Democrats who have not yet scheduled meetings with Kavanaugh. Dems are treating him slightly better than Republicans treated Justice Merrick Garland, President Obama’s choice for the Supreme Court. Unfortunately, with a Republican majority in the Senate, Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) can schedule a hearing without Democratic concurrence. If Republicans stick together, and if the calendar is favorable, Kavanaugh can be voted in without any Democratic support. Most of the scrutiny of Kavanaugh has focused on the possibility that he

would vote to overturn Roe V. Wade, the legislation that guarantees abortion rights. Kavanaugh has assured all who will listen that he honors judicial precedent. While he isn’t likely to vote to overturn Roe, he is extremely likely to rule in favor of limiting abortion rights. This might persuade Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) to vote against his confirmation. Several women’s organizations have weighed in against Kavanaugh, largely because of his perceived positions on Roe. Depending on how he answers questions in a hearing, Kavanaugh might lose the support of moderate Republican women Senators. Abortion rights aren’t the only rights on the line if Kavanaugh is voted onto the Supreme Court, and I’m frustrated that so many women have so narrowly focused on abortion rights. What about voting rights? In 2013, the Supreme Court trashed Title 4(b) (and thus also Title 5) of the Civil Rights Act. Chief Justice John Roberts, who naively believes that the way to stop racism is to simply stop mentioning it, would trash the entire Voting Rights

Act, and affirmative action, too, if he had his way. He does not believe that disparate impact means discrimination and would likely oppose any state action that made adjustments to prevailing practice because African Americans or other people of color are getting the short end of the stick. Laws that prevent discrimination,

according to Roberts, are unconstitutional. Kavanaugh is likely to follow Roberts in voting against any legislation that is “race-conscious.” Not only is Kavanaugh likely to threaten voting rights and civil rights, but he is also expected to threaten consumer protection. Already the Consumer Financial Protection Board has been under attack. When

Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney (R-SC) led the office on an interim basis, he did everything he could to render the agency inefficient, including submitting a zero budget for the agency. Now, President Trump has nominated Mulvaney’s assistance, Kathy Kraninger, to replace him as CFPB leader. Kraninger, a Georgetown University law graduate, has absolutely no background in consumer protection or financial services. Kraninger should not be confirmed to lead the CFPB, but the agency may be short-lived if Brett Kavanaugh becomes a justice. He has ruled that the CFPB is “unconstitutional” and “a threat to individual liberties:” Through his rulings, predatory bankers have been able to avoid paying millions of dollar of fines. He is on record opposing regulation and consumer protection and will make life much more challenging for everyday Black folks. Brett Kavanaugh has been a strong proponent of presidential power, and would likely cover for Trump in individual lawsuits, and prevent govern-

ment agencies, or others, from bringing lawsuits against Trump. He has stated that he would put “a nail in the coffin” of the independent counsel statute, and would probably prevent investigations of presidents while they are in office. But if we wait until 2020 to pin the tail on the Trump elephant, we will have been annexed by Russia, reimposed segregation, and more! The white women who consider their top issue in vetting a Supreme court justice the abortion issue are being extremely short-sighted. There are plenty more reasons to be adamantly opposed to this nominee. Perhaps Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) the lone Black Republican in the Senate, will be swayed by the Kavanaugh[G58] position on voting rights. Maybe other Republicans will grow a conscience. Or perhaps Schumer can hold the line on a vote until November. In any case, abortion rights aren’t the only rights on the line if Kavanaugh makes it to the Supreme Court. Can our Boys be saved?

Last month, I had the pleasure of engaging with 125 boys ages 12 to 16. These budding, rambunctious young men merged on the campus of Paul Quinn College (Dallas, Texas) to participate in “Kappa Kamp” which is sponsored through the Guideright Foundation of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.. This is not your typical camp where all the boys do all day is run and play. During the two weeks they are on campus, they are learning how to create business plans and then create a business pitch based off their team’s business plan. Yes, team. The boys are grouped into team names associated with Kappa Alpha Psi (i.e. Team Indiana, Yo, Krimson, Kreme, etc). In addition to learning how to be entrepreneurs, Kappa Kamp dives into the world of STEM. Kampers went on field trips to Microsoft, Siemens Corporation, and Toyota, to name a few, to learn more

Kampers come from many cities across the United States and oftentimes would not have access to a college fair. Because of Kappa Kamp, they had the opportunity to engage with colleges and learn about the various majors to possibly pursue. Going back to the business plan. The teams created a plan to market their product. They researched, wrote, organized, and designed the ultimate business plan. Now it was time to put it into action. The business plan pitch competition is the platform where each team’s product is revealed and explained in front of judges. The goal for every team is to have the extrinsic reward of winning the business pitch competition and prize. They argued, debated, compromised, and finally agreed in order to have a product, plan, and pitch that would give them the bragging rights as Business Pitch Champion! Being declared team champion of Kappa Kamp is the goal for every kamper. However, they also received intrinsic rewards as well. During

about science and technology. We cannot forget culture. The boys experienced going to various museums in the Dallas/Fort Worth area along with hearing musical performances of the Dallas Symphony. There was an on-site college fair, with 17 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and three Predominately White Institutions (PWIs) in attendance. Recruiters, typically alumni of the institutions, poured knowledge of their beloved alma maters into these young men.

those two weeks, you witnessed mentorship and friendships developing amongst these young boys and the men of Kappa Alpha Psi. The Kappas come to campus every day and night to spend time with the boys. They played games with them; provided food, engaged in conversations with the boys to learn about their individual personalities, goals in life, and any struggles. Whether they have fathers in their lives are not, the boys connected with Black men who took time out of their

own individual lives to come to campus to mentor these boys. Another take away the boys did not count on was each other. Whether the struggles were academic, behavior, mental struggles, etc. the boys had each other to talk to along with the Kappas. It is no disrespect to mothers but sometimes a boy needs to speak to another male about certain issues. In addition to the Kappas pouring into the boys, the additional support staff including the college students serving as Kappa Kamp counselors provided support. Each team had two college team leaders watching over the boys to ensure their safety (very important), engaging with them during team meetings, and helping them with their business plans. Excluding the wonderful peaceful hours the boys were asleep, the male and female counselors were with the boys every hour of the day. Watching the boys grow attached to the college students during the two weeks reminds us all of the importance of connecting with this generation. Now by the end of the kamp, the college kids have vowed to never have children and were pushing the kampers towards the buses to head home.

TEXAS METRO NEWS August 1, 2018

Once the dust settled, kamp counselors would say they enjoyed working with the boys and some have stayed connected with them by touching base with their parents to see how they are doing. The boys continue to speak amongst themselves through the exchanging of cellular numbers and of course social media. So the question I asked at the beginning of this, can our boys be saved? Yes! Mentorship is essential in order to rebuild our communities. In order to show our boys how to be young men that will grow into men, we need more men to stand in the gap and pour their love, wisdom, and patience into these young minds who desires the attention from another male who “gets them.” Mentoring is not easy and yes there are days where you wonder if what you are doing is making a difference. When I think about the various mentoring programs out there such as the Kappa League, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Girls Inc., etc. I am sure every mentor has been frustrated at some point. However, when that mentor receives the high school/college graduation, wedding, and/or baby shower invitations in the mail, they know they were valued and appreciated. So to all the mentors out there, I salute you. In a time where our boys and men are being slaughtered in the streets, it is imperative that we all do our part in encouraging our Black males that they do matter. Each one, teach one. While we are pouring our love and wisdom into this generation make sure you stress the importance of giving back and serving in the community. Just as they were mentored, the

7

expectations is they will mentor the next generations behind them. For those who are not mentors, I encourage you to take a male or female under your wing. I f we do not, then are children will be lost and we can only blame ourselves. It takes a village to ensure our young boys and girls grow up to be intelligent, articulate, self-assured, entrepreneurs. If we do not start the process who will? So to the men of Kappa Alpha Psi, I salute you for the high level of dedication in providing an outlet where boys can be “boys” in the name that is called Kappa Kamp. Do not take my word for it, look at the pictures and judge for yourselves. ~Doc Shep Speaks *In memory of William L. Gray Jr. , Kappa Kamp Assistant Director, long time active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. *

Wings’ Liz Cambage sets WNBA History twice in one week By Dorothy J. Gentry Sports Editor

Liz Cambage hit a 3-pointer with 45 seconds to put the Dallas Wings up 104-85 on the visiting New York Liberty, Tuesday, July 17th. But she didn’t realize she had just made WNBA history. “After the game. Rima (Karima Christmas-Kelly) told me I had just set a record with that 3,” she said after the game. “I didn’t realize that was the record. It wasn’t like it was the focus. My focus is to win every game. It’s nice to make history but at the end of the day we’ve got another game in two days. That happened today and we’ve got to focus on tomorrow now.” The 3-pointer gave Cambage 53 points for the game to break Riquna Williams’ record of 51 points. Her 53 total points set a WNBA record for most points in a single game, while her 17 made field goals also set a WNBA record for most made field goals in a single game. She also recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 10 rebounds, while adding five blocks. In addition, her 28 first-half points are the most she has ever scored in a single half in her career The Wings went on to beat the Liberty 104-87. So what was going through her mind as the shots kept falling? “I had a pretty emotional week last week and I think I let it all out after the Seattle game,” she said. “I just wanted to start a new day, new game, fresh week so I just tried to come in here as calm as possible. I had my game face on right from the beginning and was just feeling it. “It’s pretty big,” Cambage conwww.texasmetronews.com

tinued after the game. “I’ve had big numbers in China, I’ve had big numbers in Australia, and I’ve heard a lot of people say I could never have big numbers here in the WNBA. So I guess this game is for y’all.” Cambage, who returned to the WNBA this year after playing professionally overseas, said it was not her intention to play the whole game – but she did. “We didn’t start the 3rd quarter very well so that means I have to play more minutes that’s on us. I

didn’t get subbed out so I kept going (with the points).” As if those late-game, history-making heroics weren’t enough, Cambage continued her record-breaking week two days later.

She scored 35 points to become the first player in WNBA history to record 35 points in consecutive games and help the Wings beat the Washington Mystics 90-81. She was subsequently named on Monday the WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week for games played July 16-22nd. For Cambage, the Player of the Week honor is the fourth of her career and second this season. Cambage led the Wings to a 2-2 mark as Dallas ended the week with a 1411 record. The 6-8 center from Australia averaged a WNBA-high 34.0 points and a Western Conference-leading 2.25 blocked shots. Among West players, Cambage ranked second in rebounding (10.5 rpg) and field goal percentage (62.2, 46-of-74) and was tied for seventh in assists (4.0 apg). She was also named a WNBA All-Star. Despite her history making week, she remains humble in her assessment of things. “There is so much talent with every team. Each team is stacked with superstars. This is an exciting time for the WNBA.”

Ask ALMA Dear Alma, My husband accidently dialed my cell phone number and I heard him and his friend talking about me. His friend was saying that I talk about my husband behind his back and that I’m always talking about how much money I make and how I take care of everything, which I do. He was going on and on, saying that I call him nasty names and always saying how he is just a low life, good for nothing and that my husband shouldn’t just sit around and take that from me. Here’s the kicker, my husband didn’t even defend me. This man was talking about me like a dog and my husband did not respond or do anything. My feelings are so hurt. This is my fourth marriage and I don’t want to break up my marriage, but I don’t understand a man that doesn’t stand up for his wife. How do I get my husband to be a man and defend me like he should? Anonymous Dear Anonymous: Let’s step back and talk men for a

minute. Usually when grown-aged men have a conversation, it’s short direct and to the point. They don’t add unnecessary words. They give it to you straight, just like they order drinks at a bar. When having a conversation with a man, what he says is what he means. It may not be what you want to hear, but it doesn’t mean it isn’t what needs to be said. Now here, I got your back sister sassy, it’s heartbreaking to not be defended by your husband, but TBT, you should be familiar with that action, or lack thereof. If it’s true what his friend is saying, you’re husband doesn’t defend himself, which

www.texasmetronews.com

obnoxious and hateful words towards him? I’d say yes, sounds to me like you’re bullying him and that’s just not cool. Don’t be disturbed, I’m not just defending said friend, honestly it appears, you need a checkup from the neck up, and no one has enough nerve to tell you. Listen to my sound advice and let it take root. Re-evaluate your actions and take responsibility for them. In due season, we all reap what we sow, and right now you’re sowing some seeds of foolhardiness. That phone call was no accident. It was the universe giving you a dose of what you deserve. I’d suggest

This man was talking about me like a dog and my husband did not respond or do anything. My feelings are so hurt. is why he isn’t defending you. Here’s a tablespoon because I know you can only swallow small doses of constructive criticism. Yes, there’s no doubt, it cuts deeply when the one you love, leaves you standing all by your lonesome. But here’s my question to you: Are you really talking about your husband that bad in public? Even in private, that’s jacked. Are you unbearably demanding? Are you using

you turn your world around and start using the wise counsel you’re ready to douse all over your husband. Hear me when I say, men protect what they respect. Offer your husband the respect that he deserves and he’ll start to safeguard the love you share. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE FALLOUT

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE FALLOUT is the sixth MI movie with Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt. It's been a very bankable series of movies that began in 1996 with the previous five films grossing over $3 billion worldwide! Part of the worldwide appeal is the action. You don't have to understand any English to enjoy the incredible

quel to the previous MI movie, Rogue Nation, and it picks up with bad guy Solomon Lane (played by Sean Harris) who is out for revenge and wants to create a New World Order. Angela Bassett is back as Erica Sloan, the head of the C.I.A. and Henry Cavil plays August Walker, one of her top C.I.A. operatives who goes head to head with Cruise in the movie. Spoiler Alert: we find out that Walker has sold out MI6 and tries to frame Hunt as the bad guy in the movie. The plot is a bit muddy but this film is all about the action. Even after breaking his ankle

action stunts in the movie, many of which are performed by Cruise himself. In Mission: Impossible Fallout Hunt and his MI6 Team (Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames) are in a race against time to keep a terrorist team, called The Apostles, from getting some black market plutonium and exploding two nuclear bombs. The movie is actually a se-

shooting a stunt scene Cruise still had the nerve to continue with the movie's action scenes and with his star power, even at age 56, creates a very seamless movie where the action never stops. The movie is a bit long, 2 hours and 27 minutes, but the time passes quickly with the pulsating action that appears on the big screen for most of the movie. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE FALLOUT is rated PG-13 for some blood and violence and on my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale" I rate the movie a JUMBO.

One on One with Kostas Antetokounmpo

By Dorothy J Gentry Sports Editor

Same wide, infectious grin. Same slim, almost lanky but athletic build. Same facial features. Same hilarious sense of humor. And of course, same last name. But that’s where the outward similarities end for Kostas Antetokounmpo and his older brother, Giannis, known as the Greek Freak of the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks. Younger brother Kostas – who went 60th overall in this year’s NBA draft - had his drat rights acquired by the Dallas Mavericks from the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for the draft rights to 54th overall pick Shake Milton. “I watched the whole draft and it was at like No. 59 and I was like, ‘I’m about to go grab something to eat,’” Kostas recalls of draft night. “I was on my way out they said my name and I’m like, Oh. And I go back inside. I’m excited and I’m excited to be here and glad they picked me.” Antetokounmpo, 6’11, was an early-entry candidate to this year’s draft after spending one season at Dayton where he averaged 5.2 points and 2.9 rebounds for the Flyers. Realistically, Kostas is a raw talent with only one year of college ball under his belt. But he has potential and will likely get reps playing for the Mavs’ G-League affiliate, The Texas Legends. “He’s a player that’s long, athletic, upside so those guys (he and Giannis) obviously genetically – share some things,” said Mavs GM Donnie www.texasmetronews.com

Nelson on draft night of Kostas. “He’s taller, maybe not quite as athletic but at the power forward position here’s a guy who can block shots, run rebounds, so he’ll be a nice development player for us probably in the G-League.” For now, Kostas is in Las Vegas, playing for the Mavs’ Summer League team and looking to make a name for himself – out of the shadow of his brother. After Mavs practice prior to leaving for Summer League, he talked about a myriad of topics including how he and his brother are alike, the constant mispronunciation of his name and how he handles it and what motivates him. On the pressure of being Giannis’ little brother: “Well it’s pressure but It’s good pressure. It motivates me and makes me better. Everyone has pressure in their life.” On the mispronunciation of his name and how he handles it: “Oh people butcher it all the time. (When he has to make calls or give his name over the phone what does he do?) “I give fake names, my Uber is Gus. When I’m at the airport, they look at me like uh… they can’t even say my name. When I order food most of the time I just say Tre. I don’t know why I say Tre,” he says laughing at the thought. On what motivates him: “My family motivates me a lot. Myself. I just want to get better. Anything I do, I just want to get better. If you paint, or you’re a rapper, you get better. I just want to get better at basketball and as a person. On if his brother will watch him during Summer League: “Yes. Both my brothers are coming out to Summer League. He (Giannis) always evaluates my game. I expect him to tell me something good and something bad.” On the biggest piece of advice – basketball and life – Giannis has given him: “With life he says to enjoy

your life. It’s short. Just enjoy it. Basketball wise, he always tells me to just play hard. You can’t always make all your shots. Can’t always look good but you can always play hard and always give effort. On what it was like growing up and playing against each other: “It was crazy. We would go at each other. I feel it’s like, like when you see your younger brother growing up – like me now seeing Alex (their younger brother) growing up and I’m playing with him and see him getting better every year and I’m like ‘Oh, I’ve got to take him serious now.’ That’s how it was.” On when Giannis started to take him serious: “Probably last year he started taking me serious. When I was in college, getting more experience and we were playing one-one-one and he was looking at me like, ‘You got better.’” On if their game is similar: “Our game is kind of alike. Same physical tools. Long, lanky, athleticism. We like to run the open floor and use our athleticism to score.”

On a chance to work with DeAndre Jordan: “That would be awesome. He has that experience and it would be

perfect for me.” On his NBA nickname: “I don’t have a nickname yet. Let’s think on it.”

journalism. In 1972, Sanders pivoted, taking a reporter job at KERA-TV, a public station in Dallas. He moved all the way up to vice president/station manager for television and radio. He also served as host and producer of the station’s award-winning program, News Addition, and as executive producer of the PBS series, With Ossie & Ruby, starring legendary stage and screen performers Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. “While I know there are people more worthy, I am most appreciative that some of my friends and colleagues supported my nomination for this honor,” said Bob Ray Sanders. “To them, I am most grateful. I only hope that in these treacherous times they will inspire other young journalists to take up the mantle and fight on -- indeed “Write On!”” In 1986, Sanders returned to the Star-Telegram and retired in 2015. Known as the “dean” of journalists in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, he is past president of the Press Club of Fort Worth and a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Association of Black Journalists and the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists. “Bob Ray has mastered every medium and is highly respected in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. The recipient of numerous awards for journalistic excellence, many of his awards have been in television, radio, print and community service,” said Cheryl Smith, NABJ’s secretary and publisher and editor of the IMessenger News Group, a multi-platform news organization. “He has extended his reach and influence on the internet. All the while, Bob Ray has been an active member of the National Association of Black Journalists, and he has served the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter in so many capacities,” she said. “Bob Ray has led a very distinguished career, and although he is now retired, he stills serves as a source of inspiration, support and leadership for journalists and the community at large.” In addition to Ms. Smith’s nomination, supporting documents were provided by Fort Worth Star-Telegram executive editor Jim Witt and Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price. www.texasmetronews.com

“Bob Ray is easily the bravest journalist I personally know,” wrote Mr. Witt. “Because of the color of his skin, and the attitude of some people where we publish, he is subjected daily to veiled innuendo and outright slurs that would turn most of us into suspicious cynical observers. “But in the entire time I’ve known him...he’s never stooped to retaliatory comments no matter how vicious the pernonal attack on him. He always maintains his dignity and doesn’t let his personal feelings get in the way of his message. If we had to pick one journalist who embodies the values of the Star-Telegram, Bob Ray Sanders would be the unanimous choice.” Commissioner Price wrote, “On behalf of this office and a community that has enjoyed the benefits of having a responsible, relevant and rooted journalist in our midst, please accept this recommendation of Bob Ray Sanders. “Bob Ray Sanders is renowned for taking on the status quo without fear of retribution...It is my belief that few can equal the merit and model of effective journalism that Bob Ray has proved on a local and national basis.” Sanders has received some of journalism’s most prestigious awards, among them: five awards from the Houston, New York and Chicago film festivals, five Dallas Press Club KATIE Awards, three Corporation for Public Broadcasting Awards; a regional Emmy Award; a National Association of Black Journalists award for Best TV Sports Feature, and a National Headliner Award for outstanding investigative reporting. Other honors include the Ethics Award from the Schieffer School of Journalism; Distinguished Alumni Award, Fort Worth Independent School District; induction into the “Hall of Honor,” University of North Texas Journalism Department; the “Thomas Jefferson Liberty Award” from the Dallas Civil Liberties Union; and induction into the Texas Literary Hall of Fame. The UNT graduate is married to Dorothy Brown-Sanders. They have one son, Chandon. Read more on the other nominees at www.nabj. org
