BOARD PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As our university environment transitions, I want to highlight how Clarion students achieve, endure and form lasting connections with their school.

In the time since I joined the Foundation Board, there have been many occasions of serendipitous encounters with Clarion graduates and reminders of my university. I’ll share a couple.

During a trip to Italy, my husband Chris and I were walking down a street in Milan. In one of the storefronts were two mannequins sporting Clarion University jackets. I took a picture, and as I did so, the proprietor came out and shooed me away, wary that I might be stealing his design.

Another time, Chris and I were walking our dogs in our Ben Avon neighborhood. Another walker – when we asked why he was wearing a Clarion T-shirt – told us his son had graduated from Clarion. He told us about the time he was vacationing in the Caribbean and was on a fairly deserted beach when a “big guy” walking hand-in-hand with a little girl came running after him. That big guy was Kurt Angle '92, who saw the Clarion shirt and wanted to let him know his affiliation with our school.

Now, as the first class that will graduate from PennWest Clarion has been welcomed to campus, I feel certain that this sort of connectivity will continue as we make this transition. Whether it is Clarion State College, Clarion University or PennWest Clarion, I know that students will develop and nurture a network that is worldwide. Regardless of where we go, Clarion will always be with us.

At the Foundation, our goal since its founding in 1969 has been and will continue to be assuring that Clarion students will be supported in achieving their educational and life goals through the generosity of you, our donors. Thank you, as always, for making the difference in so many lives. And if you have similar Clarion stories to share, I’d love to hear them.

Sincerely,

Jane K. France norman28r@aol.com
