sourced food is appealing to a growing number of consumers across the country. Here in State College, we’re lucky to live near a plethora of picturesque farms whose owners till the soil and tend the herds to produce fresh veggies, dairy products and meat – all for us! We can enjoy the fruits of their labor at several area farmers markets each week year-round – and we should, says Tony Musso, owner of Nittany Valley Organics and president of the Downtown State College Indoor Farmers Market. “Local farmers need community support more than ever,” Musso says. 8 / www.visitpennstate.org

And in this area, all the farmers markets are producer-only markets, so everything that’s sold there has to have been grown or made by the vendors. “The best thing about going to a farmers market here, from a consumer’s standpoint, is if you have any questions at all about something, those questions are going to be answered by the person who planted it, grew it and harvested it,” Musso says. WINTER MARKETS Downtown State College Indoor Farmers Market When: 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays from Dec. – April Where: Lobby of the State College Municipal Building, 243 S. Allen St. What: A handful of the welcoming vendors you see in the outdoor markets downtown in the summertime spend spend the winter here, offering patrons fresh dairy products, salmon, trout, grass-fed beef, pork and poultry, locally grown, chemical-free produce, organic health and beauty products, and Brazilian snacks. Boalsburg Indoor Farmers Market When: 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays from mid-November through April Where: Indoors at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 218 N. Church St. in Boalsburg What: About 15-18 vendors pack the church basement to offer market fans the best in-season produce along with Gemelli Bakers breads, wild-caught salmon, meat and poultry, locally made cheeses, raw milk, soaps and lotions, honey, maple syrup and more. Millheim Indoor Farmers Market When: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays in November and December Where: Hosterman & Stover Hardware, 190 W. Main St., Millheim What: A smaller collection of vendors from Millheim’s outdoor market are given space inside the local hardware store on Saturdays, when the weather turns cold. You’ll find in-season produce, meat and dairy products, along with wool products, maple syrup and more. Tip: Catch a local guest vendor selling wreaths and other greenery as the holidays approach.
SPRING/SUMMER/FALL MARKETS Downtown State College Outdoor Tuesday Market When: 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. May to November Where: Locust Lane (between College Ave. and Beaver Ave.) What: Local produce, beef, lamb, pork, chicken, dairy products, wines, flowers, baked goods, sauces, organic soaps and personal products, and more can be found each week in downtown State College. Where: The Home Depot Parking Lot, North Atherton St. What: More than 30 vendors line the Home Depot parking lot on summer Saturdays with everything from salmon and trout to fresh produce, breads, and even in-season fruit (peaches, cherries, pears, apples, depending on what’s in season) from a farmer in Bloomsburg. Boalsburg Outdoor Farmers Market When: 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays from the beginning of May to the first week of November Where: Outdoors at the PA Military Museum parking lot (Routes 322/45 in Boalsburg). What: About 25 permanent vendors plus a smattering of guest vendors offer a wide variety of goods, from Alaskancaught salmon to homemade cakes and pies to all the in-demand, in-season produce you can think of. Tip: This market is the place to wet your whistle, whether you want to purchase locally made kombucha, sample a swallow from Seven Mountains Winery, buy something from Good Intent Cider, or purchase a growler from Elk Creek Café’s beer truck. Millheim Farmers Market When: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays from the beginning of May until the end of October Where: American Legion Pavilion, 112 Legion Lane in Spring Mills What: About a dozen vendors offer apples and apple products, maple syrup, honey, lamb, wool items, beef, cheese, pork, chicken, flowers, garlic, ginger, sauces and ketchup, plus tons of fresh veggies. Tip: Check out the Learning Garden for fresh herbs and to see gardening demonstrations. Centre County is known
for its lush farmlands and its world-class university, but this region also has an inspiring arts scene that rivals bigger cities across the Commonwealth. Each July, tens of thousands of artists and art lovers convene in downtown State College and the University Park campus for the annual Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, a five-day celebration of the arts that includes a juried sidewalk sale of goods by artists and craftsmen from across the country, live music on multiple stages, an Italian street painting festival, a giant sand sculpture and more. Just down the road from Arts Fest is the thriving People’s Choice Festival of Pennsylvania Arts in Boalsburg, which showcases the best of central Pennsylvania’s artists and artisans as well as food vendors, entertainment and family activities. There’s also the Bellefonte Arts & Crafts Fair in August, which boasts local art and hand-crafted items for sale in Bellefonte’s Victorian downtown district.
And if performance art is your thing, you won’t want to miss the Central PA Theatre and Dance Fest, which involves more than 20 companies performing at several venues around State College. There are also discussion panels, family-friendly activities, readings, workshops and more opportunities for those wanting to learn as well as be entertained. Apart from these annual calendar highlights, the arts are appreciated yearround here thanks to a variety of venues and production companies that inspire audiences all the time. The Palmer Museum of Art on Penn State’s University Park campus is home to more than 8,200 art objects in its 11 galleries, with nine rotating exhibitions and one sculpture garden — all with free admission. Art lovers can also catch continually changing exhibitions at the HUB-Robeson Galleries on campus as well as downtown’s Woskob Family Gallery, which specializes in world-class contemporary art. The Art Alliance of Central Pennsylvania’s Lemont-

based Gallery Shop has two- and threedimensional art, gifts and crafts for sale, and its Art Alliance Gallery Downtown houses a small rotating exhibit of local artists’ work. And those traveling to Millheim should not miss the Green Drake Gallery & Arts Center for fine regional art and a welcoming arts community. The Bellefonte Art Museum for Centre County is inside a historic 1810 house that has multiple galleries showcasing work from local artists. On the museum’s third floor, it has a permanent exhibit on the Underground Railroad, highlighting our region’s involvement with it. Those who love live performances give State College a standing ovation, as it is home to several talented companies and brings plenty of national acts to its stages as well. Look for noteworthy visiting artists and outstanding local productions brought to the stage by Penn State’s School of Theatre and its professional arm Penn State Centre Stage, FUSE Productions, Penn State’s Center for the Performing Arts, The Next Stage Theatre Company, Nittany Theatre at The Barn and Tempest Productions. Fans of classical music will find talented performances by The Pennsylvania Chamber

Orchestra, Nittany Valley Symphony, the State College Choral Society and the Essence of Joy choirs both on and off campus. There are several state-of-the-art venues for live performances, from the stadium atmosphere of Bryce Jordan Center to the classically elegant experience of The State Theatre downtown and Schwab Auditorium and Eisenhower Auditorium on campus. There are also more intimate spaces like the Barn in Boalsburg and the Pavilion Theatre on campus, and a gorgeous outdoor setting for live music and festivals at the Tussey Mountain Amphitheatre. •

Those who like to shoot pool, play video games or throw darts can find plenty of fun in the basement of Champs Downtown (139 S. Allen St.), where a spacious bar is just steps away from all the action If you want to see live music…. See what’s playing at the following venues: Bryce Jordan Center, The State Theatre, Tussey Mountain Amphitheatre to make sure you’re not missing out on a national act or nationally known cover band. Live bands are given great play at the Phyrst.
If you want to see a show …. If you’re into plays and performances, you’re in the right town. Check the calendars for these venues to see what’s playing: Schwab Auditorium is a 900-seat auditorium on campus that hosts the Center for the Performing Arts’ jazz concerts and chamber music events. The State Theatre holds several theatre and performance groups in addition to bringing in national musical acts and other special events. Eisenhower Auditorium, with a seating capacity of 2,500, is Penn State’s primary theatrical performance space. Penn State Downtown Theatre Center is home for Penn State’s School of Theatre. If you want a local beer … Breweries abound in our area. The newest on the block is Happy Valley Brewing Company, housed in a 200-year-old barn that’s been converted into a two-level restaurant and bar. If you want to explore a bit … From the giant illuminated Nittany Lion symbols atop Beaver Stadium to the majestic way the columns of Old Main look in the moonlight, strolling through campus at night is a fun way to see the university in a whole new way. Did you know the Nittany Lion shrine lights up blue and white at night? If you haven’t snapped an after-dark selfie at the shrine, it’s a must for alums and visitors. If you want a creative cocktail …. There are two distilleries in the area: Barrel 21 Distillery & Dining on the north end of State College offers craft cocktails using its own selection of spirits made on-site. In Bellefonte, Big Spring Spirits has earned an impressive reputation for its menu of artisanal cocktails and informative tasting room flights. Plenty of creative cocktails can be found elsewhere in town, including at Local Whiskey
on Beaver Avenue, and Gigi’s Southern Table a little west of downtown. And don’t miss the spiked milkshakes, made with Berkey Creamery ice cream, at the Field Burger & Tap in Toftrees. If you want a sweet treat… Did you know Berkey Creamery is open until 10 p.m. seven days a week? That’s as good a reason as any to indulge in one of their giant cones by the light of the moon. For a more traditional dessert, the Deli never disappoints with its daily offerings of pies, cakes, and cheesecakes, but we suggest the Killer Cookie for Two! If you want to watch the game … Sports fans in State College are never far from a decent option to catch scores, highlights and the biggest games of the night. families converge in State College for one main reason in the fall: Penn State football. But many alumni who are happy to be back in the valley for a few days bring with them something they didn’t have when they were Penn State students: kids! Hitting up Berkey Creamery and snapping pics at the Nittany Lion shrine are easy “Go-to’s” with your little Lions, but there’s plenty of other low-key family fun to be had in the area. If you’re looking for something else to see and explore while you’re in town, try one of these family-friendly sweet spots. Almost all of them are within a few miles of Beaver Stadium. Fun for Little Kids (Ages 2-5) Discovery Space: A children’s science center with a new, larger location on Atherton Street, there are even more 40 / www.visitpennstate.org
hands-on exhibits, programs, and events! It’s an inviting space where families can engage their senses and learn while they have fun. Millbrook Marsh Nature Center: Tucked at the bottom of the sloping hills where Penn Staters tailgate, this 62-acre nature preserve is a unique mix of wetlands, forest and meadow, with meandering creeks and boardwalks that make the flora and fauna easily accessible to all ages. And if you’re feeling adventurous, the Millbrook Marsh trails connect to the shared bike paths that lead to nearby Spring Creek Park. Fun For Middle Kids (Ages 6-9) The Arboretum at Penn State: “Beautiful,” “serene” and “relaxing” are routinely used to describe the gorgeous gardens on the north end of campus. But for kids, the piece de résistance is
the Children’s Gate Children’s Garden, which has lots of natural and manmade treasures to discover and learn about as you wander. Don’t miss the kaleidoscope flowerpots, the sandbox in a cave, or the giant caterpillar! Fun for Big Kids (Ages 10-14) Tussey Mountain Ski and Recreation: Tussey Mountain doesn’t need snow to be the headquarters for fun in State College. Between its 18-hole miniature golf course and its batting cages, skate park and go-kart track, a trip to Tussey will please kids of all ages. Or bring your poles (and get a license if any of your anglers are 18 and older) to do some catch-and-release fishing in their fully stocked pond. Penn State All-Sports Museum: Any young sports fan in your life will appreciate a trip to the All-Sports
Museum, which highlights the best and brightest of the university’s athletes, who’ve all done amazing things on and off the fields, courts and tracks of their playing days. From basketball to bowling, fencing to football, visitors young and old will gain an appreciation for the Penn State traditions of sportsmanship, excellence and success with honor. Penn’s Cave & Wildlife Park: You can pick your pleasure here, with four different experiences available to adventurers. Take a boat tour of a water cavern, the only cave in Pennsylvania on the National Register of Historic Places; ride a bus through the park’s grazing pastures and mountain trails to see wildlife galore; wind your way through a 4,800-square-foot Miner’s Maze; or hop aboard a Jeep for some off-roading fun. •

it comes to outdoor recreation in Pennsylvania, there’s no better place than Centre County. State College, which is also known as Happy Valley is a community nestled against the Appalachian Mountains and home to Penn State University, picturesque landscapes, and abundant state parks. From paddling crystal-clear lakes to summiting mountain peaks, there are endless ways to explore the region’s diverse state parks. Plus, the parks are open 365 days a year, so there’s no excuse not to visit. 1. Whipple Dam State Park A dream park for water-lovers, Whipple Dam is just 12 miles from State College, and its lake is open just for kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, swimming, and boating

with an electric motor. Rent a board or boat Fridays to Sundays in summer season, or keep your toes dry and go for a hike around the lake’s only trail. The Whipple Lake Trail loops three miles around and passes the stream that feeds the lake then rises above it for an overlook lake view. 2. Penn Roosevelt State Park Escape crowds and see the starry night ski at this isolated park in the Seven Mountains region, 10 miles down a dirt road. Penn Roosevelt State Park offers rustic tent camping and peace and quiet for those who like having a place to themselves. The park area is small, but is surrounded by 80,000 acres of Rothrock State Forest and provides access to the Mid State Trail for day hiking or backpacking. After hiking, return to your campsite and cool off in the small lake.
HEALTHY LIVING 3. Greenwood Furnace State Park History buffs will love this park located in the once-flourishing iron-making community in the Seven Mountains. Hundreds of families lived in Greenwood Furnace at its height in the 1870s, and it’s believed that the fires burned bright enough to light the sky—allowing villagers to walk at night without lanterns. These hot furnace stacks also sent smoke and cinders into the air, coating the town in soot. Remnants of the settlement remain or have been reconstructed, including a hot blast furnace, 1860s church, and ironmaster’s house. The six-acre lake was originally dammed to power the grist mill, but is now popular with anglers, kayakers, and canoers—as motorized boats aren’t allowed. Hike the surrounding trails through the forest and to the mountaintops, spotting old charcoal hearths along the way.
at collect-your-own blueberry patches and beaver ponds before reaching the Bog Natural Area. Follow the boardwalk to explore the diverse marsh. See more of the park’s 3,394 acres by mountain bike, horse, kayak, or canoe, transitioning to cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and ice skating when the snow falls.
4. Bald Eagle State Park F.J. Sayers Lake is the park’s showpiece, and it’s a haven for boaters, swimmers, and anglers. Set beautifully against Bald Eagle Mountain, the lake is eight miles long with 23 miles of shoreline, and fishermen come to catch warm-water black crappie, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and yellow perch. During summer, students and vacationers swim in the lake, kayak, and lounge on the sandy beach. Just 20 minutes from State College, the area’s also known for its unique bed and breakfast/interpretive center—the only one of its kind in the Pennsylvania State Park system—called The Nature Inn at Bald Eagle. Interpretive exhibits here showcase birding in the park and encourage kids and adults alike to venture outside.
7. Poe Paddy State Park Hike the Mid State Trail’s only tunnel section, a 250-foot abandoned railroad tunnel through West Paddy Mountain, at this state park. Follow a path along Penns Creek before crossing a pedestrian bridge and climbing up to the tunnel-turned-railtrail and bat hibernation habitat. Located at the confluence of Big Poe Creek and Penns Creek, Poe Paddy is well-known for its Green Drake Hatch, which typically occurs during late May or early June and is a favorite of trout anglers.
5. Black Moshannon State Park This park’s name comes from the American Indian one, “Moss-Hanne,” which means “moose stream.” And the stream below the lake is a popular place for catching trout. But Black Moshannon Lake’s teacolored water is the most unique sight in this park, and it’s the result of clear spring water flowing through mossy bogs that becomes colored by the plant tannins. See the bogs up close on the 7.7-mile MossHanne Trail through hemlocks, stopping
6. Poe Valley State Park Though it’s surrounded by a vast state forest, Poe Valley is a tiny state park at just 602 acres. In the summer, anglers visit the lake to catch brown and rainbow trout, catfish, and perch. Once it ices over in winter, ice fishermen flock here to reel in a catch. Hike three miles of trails within the park, or connect to the lengthy Mid State Trail as it passes through for a long day hike or multiday adventure.
8. Rothrock State Forest Though this is actually a state forest (versus a state park), Rothrock State Forest is worth including on the list for all the outstanding hiking opportunities that you’ll find so close to State College. You’ll find more than 300 miles of hiking trails in total, including Mid State Trail and 16 miles of the Standing Stone Trail, a more than 70 mile route that connects Cowans Gap State Park to Greenwood Furnace State Park. Even if you’re not up for a long hike, Rothrock State Forest offers plenty of opportunities for mountain biking, horseback riding, paddling, and fishing. •

Penn State dominates the
landscape of State College, and most people think of one of two things when they think of the campus: education and football. However, there are other great things to enjoy on the university’s campus. Whether you love football or would rather skip the game, here are a few things to keep you busy on the Penn State campus. Penn State Berkey Creamery The Penn State Berkey Creamery is one of the most well-known places to get ice cream in all of Pennsylvania, and even

better, it’s incredibly delicious. The university’s first creamery was established in 1865, and they have been making delicious ice cream on campus ever since. The creamery is part of Penn State’s Department of Food Science, and they have spent years perfecting ice cream, all, of course, in the name of academic excellence. If you need more proof that this is the place to get ice cream, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield graduated from the school’s ice cream making course prior to starting Ben and Jerry’s. The Creamery makes over 100 different flavors and popular options include Peachy Paterno and Bittersweet
PENN STATE Mint. However, don’t think you can mix flavors. The only person ever allowed to mix flavors here was President Bill Clinton. Whatever other activities you have planned on the Penn State campus, don’t leave without at stop at the Creamery. Penn State All-Sports Museum Located in the southwestern corner of Beaver Stadium, the Penn State All-Sports Museum showcases the athletic highlights from every varsity sport in the school’s history: 34 in total. Each sport is given a gallery where they can display memorabilia from their history including uniforms, equipment, and trophies. It’s interesting learning about all of the university’s varsity sports, including former ones like bowling. With the exception of game-day visits, it’s often possible to take a peak inside Beaver Stadium while touring the museum. Even if you aren’t a football fan, it’s impressive standing inside the world’s third largest stadium. The museum is also home to the taxidermied Nittany Lion. Said to be the last mountain lion killed in Pennsylvania in the late 1800s, this animal is now the mascot of the university. Palmer Museum of Art Do you love art? A visit to the Palmer Museum of Art is a great choice while visiting the Penn State campus. While you might expect it to be home to work by students and former students, the museum actually features an impressive collection of nearly 10,000 pieces of art from around the world, with some pieces dating back hundreds or thousands of years. The museum’s collection is showcased in nearly a dozen galleries, some of which are reserved for temporary exhibitions. The collection showcases a wide variety of mediums from throughout history including ancient South American and Asian ceramics, Renaissance paintings, and pieces of Contemporary art.
State College Spikes In addition to world-class college sports, the Penn State campus is also home to a professional sports team. The State College Spikes, the Class-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, play in Medlar Field, which is also home to Penn State’s baseball team. During the summer months, baseball fans can catch a game at this great stadium and cheer on some of baseball’s top prospects. This state-of-the-art minor league stadium offers fantastic professional baseball on Penn State’s campus. These family-friendly games not only feature great baseball, but also plenty of in-game entertainment between innings. If you are traveling to Penn State during the summer with your family, make sure to check out a Spikes’ game. Penn State Arboretum The Penn State Arboretum might just be the most beautiful corner of the Penn State campus. The arboretum is home to seven beautiful gardens offering a variety of plantings and experiences for outdoor lovers. Take a stroll through the Fragrance Garden (which smells great), the Tropical Grove, and the Grove of the Ancients to get a feel for this magical place. Another great spot is the Children’s Garden. This garden features plants that are both beautiful and whimsical. The entire area is set up as an example of the ridge and valley system that dominates the landscape of central Pennsylvania. The garden features children’s activities, a stream, and even a cavern to explore. Even better, the Children’s Garden is completely enclosed, allowing parents to let their kids explore the grounds on their own without worrying about them leaving the garden. •

The Palmer Museum of Art is a distinctive, free-admission arts resource on the Penn State University Park campus for the university and surrounding communities in central Pennsylvania. NITTANY LION SHRINE
Near Recreation Building (Rec Hall) This landmark was created by Heinz Warneke from a 13-ton block of Indiana limestone. The Nittany Lion, Penn State’s mascot since 1904, was officially recognized when the statue was presented as a gift to the University by the Class of 1940. The shrine was renovated with a gift from the Class of 2012.

Hourly visitor parking is available at the East, HUB and Nittany parking decks, as well as at many other campus parking areas via our multi-space pay stations. No-fare, ADA-accessible transit across campus is provided via CATA’s four Loop and Link services, and by the University’s two Campus Shuttles routes – Campus Shuttle via College Avenue and Campus Shuttle via Beaver Avenue. For those who enjoy more active transportation, University Park was named a silver-level Bicycle Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists in 2016, and offers more than 800 racks for bike parking, multiple bicycle repair stations, and the popular Zagster bike share program. Faculty and staff can rent vehicles for University business through Fleet Operations, while personal travel vehicles are also available through Enterprise CarShare. Students, faculty and staff can also arrange to share rides together via the Zimride online ride-matching platform.
PARKING ON CAMPUS
Hourly visitor parking is available at the East, HUB and Nittany parking decks, and at select other lots that include multispace pay stations or meters. Many campus parking areas are available at no charge on weekends, except where signs indicate restrictions. Visitors should always check the signage posted at the entrance of each lot for information on reserved hours. All student parking areas are reserved 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as are specifically-reserved spaces such as ADA and service/delivery, unless otherwise noted on the signage posted at those spaces. Parking permits and parking assistance are available Monday through Friday at all parking information kiosks, the Centre County/Penn State Visitor Center, and the Parking Office at 1 Eisenhower Parking Deck.
