Tony’s Takes A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS Back in 1990, I had expanded my television guide, TV Taters, into the Gulf Coast counties of Mississippi. I was on a roll, newly minted in publishing after 22 years of radio, television and agency work and I had a case of publisher’s Manifest Destiny. While delivering my guides in the Gulfport area, I discovered the office of The Penny Pincher, a classified newspaper with lots of want ads and display ads, no color, a fancy V-shaped classified layout and no fluff. It was founded and operated by Richard Gautreaux, a wiry and fiery Cajun former banker from Carencro, just up the road from Lafayette. Richard and his family were in the third year of operating this publication, which apparently was very popular and successful in Hancock, Harrison, Jackson and Stone Counties. Richard was behind the desk of what had been a shipping and mailing center but with the success of the paper, had been shut down and was strictly the Penny Pincher. Years later, I would reverse that move, adding Postal Plus to Bargains Plus! and giving my family another business to operate. Richard offered to help me deliver my guides, using his people, as long as I paid them the same thing he was paying them. I was impressed with the offer but declined because the money for such a luxury as paid delivery was not there.
Richard offered other advise, the most important being about my publication. He asked me, “why are you publishing a TV guide?” I told him for the income and he asked me if the listings for the shows was provided free or did I have to pay for them. I told him we paid and then he said, “see my paper? All my content is paid advertising, affordable advertising for the average reader and small businessman and woman. Everyone wants to see their ad and either buy or sell items in this paper. Even after Richard’s death in 1995, the agreement was honored. In recent years, the Gautreaux family has suffered numerous deaths and tragic circumstances and with the erosion of papers like ours, advertisers and readership have declined. On December 20th of last year, they printed their final paper….31 years of a weekly that thousands depended on, just like they do with this publication.

And now the old Penny Pincher readers will also be able to read their new paper online on mobile devices or at home or work, with our flip-page technology which we’re provided for all our publications over the past ten years. We chose Penny to honor the Penny Pincher and Plus, which is the common name in both of our other publications. There is a strong link between the Southern Mississippi area on or abutting the Gulf Coast and the lake, river and Gulf parishes of southeast Louisiana where our two papers have been available beginning so many years ago. Both editions will share advertisers in many cases which will stretch budgets for those using our papers and reading us online. We welcome our new readers and advertisers and encourage them to send us “want ads” or classified ads, your choice of terminology. Tony’s Takes WHERE THERE’S A WILL, THERE’S A WADE The LSU Tigers have become college basketball’s most dangerous team with its wins over Kentucky at Rupp Arena, Georgia in Athens and now a most incredible win Saturday without their best player over a former number one Tennessee squad which was manhandled by Kentucky a week and a half ago in Lexington. The Tigers still have games against Alabama and Florida back-to-back on the road, sandwiched by contests against Texas A&M and Vanderbilt at home, the latter to close the regular season. It is an easier schedule than for either Kentucky or Tennessee and if they win out, they will secure the regular season SEC basketball title. Statistically, no other team compares with the Tigers in the overall categories of scoring, assists, steals. rebounds, blocks, free throws and 3-point shooting except for Tennessee, whom they beat. The Tigers lead the league in a couple of the categories and are usually within the top four in most of the others.

One area in which the Tigers are the runaway leader is their ability in coming from behind and winning close games. Only the Arkansas game at home was a nail-biter loss, a one-point mild upset when no Tiger could chase down an errant ball during the last seconds of the game in Baton Rouge. The Florida loss was a rare look at a Tiger team not concentrating on their court opponent and even that loss came in overtime. The Tigers have won four of their six overtime games and have not lost a league game by more than five.

These Tigers don’t have the overall length of the great talented teams under Dale Brown. But, fortunately, they don’t have Dale Brown either. Brown could take his NBA-talented players and turn his postseason appearances into a disappearing act once he reached the Final Four. Brown was always too busy developing a “freak” defense or bullying people with his superior knowledge and Renaissance Man background and attitude. The most famous quote about Brown comes from former Indiana basketball Hall of Fame coach Bobby Knight, who, when asked about a Final Four game against Brown’sTigers and if he was worried about their talent, Knight said, “I was certainly worried about perhaps the most talented college basketball squad of that season, but then I looked down the sideline and saw Coach Brown with his team and I stopped worrying.”
• GET A PRE-WINTER CHECK Before the temperatures begin to dip, take your vehicle to a mechanic and ask them to check the battery, brakes, antifreeze level, heater, defroster, and thermostat to make sure that all are in working order.
No such fear resides with the youngish Will Wade, who, in his second year, is developing a fine squad of fiery players. They could wind up with the best backcourt in the SEC this year and currently are ranked in the Top 10 and on top of the conference standings, even with Kentucky and Tennessee but owning all the tiebreakers against those two teams .They have made mistakes, sure, but they have won four of their six overtime contests and have shown they have the confidence of depending on an eight-man rotation for their success. For a team that is still limited in enough big men to be able to crash the boards with impunity, the Tigers find a way to clear the glass both offensively and defensively to keep them in any game they play. Look for them to move into the top five in the country in March with a chance to be a number one or two seed in the NCAA March Madness, hopefully in the South or Midwest Regionals, where they could avoid an early date against either Duke or Gonzaga. This is not your father’s team nor is it one that Dale Brown could con for an entire regular season until the chips were on the line. Much like the current Los Angeles Dodgers, you could depend on a Dale Brown team to tank, like they did in the ballyhooed loss to Kentucky years ago when Brown and his Tigers blew a 31-point LEAD against Kentucky. In that game, Kentucky had less than a one tenth of one percent chance of winning, but as Bobby Knight told the oddsmakers, “Don’t take the under on this one, guys. You forget whose coaching the LSU Tigers.” Knight wouldn’t think that about Wade, who might become Joe Alleva’s best hire in Baton Rouge. LSU basketball is fun again, run by a very good coach and with a roster full of never-say-die ball players. And plan to be in that number next month when the Tigers prepare for their legitimate chance for their first national basketball title. -0-

While most may wash their car or truck more frequently in warmer weather, washing and waxing in winter months can help prolong the life of your paint. These few tips will not only keep your vehicle running and looking great all winter, but they will also keep you safe in less than ideal road conditions. In addition to these considerations, there are a few additional steps you can take to boost your own safety:
• ALWAYS KEEP AN EMERGENCY KIT Among the items you should keep on hand in an emergency car kit are a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flashlight, extra batteries, flares, and jumper cables. • KEEP YOUR PHONE WITH YOU When traveling, always bring along your cellphone for safety purposes. Make sure it’s charged before you leave, and take along a car charger to boost your battery if needed. • BE FAMILIAR WITH YOUR ROUTE Be aware of road and weather conditions before you travel, as well as of any areas such as bridges or overpasses that may be particularly hazardous in inclement weather.

Drainage is fast becoming one of the most common stresses in Louisiana lawns. Week long rain events and humid weather present a multitude of problems. Lower areas of the yard will drain slower than the high areas. Any turfgrass will be affected by water logged soils and will thin out over time. Weeds that can handle those types of conditions win out and begin to take over. Use a good quality top soil or river sand/silt product to raise lower areas in the yard. The addition of a French drain can also help with drainage issues, especially in lawns that are flat and have little contour to direct the flow of water. Lastly, you can attack the weeds themselves. Weeds are just plants that are growing out of place. They can be described as annual (living one year) or perennial (living year after year). This is important to know when selecting herbicides to control them. Herbicides can be described as selective (kills certain types of plants and not others) or non-selective (kills all plants). The most popular non-selective herbicide is glysophate and it can be found in products like Round Up and Hi-Yield Killzall. Selective herbicides are commonly used in lawn situations, especially types that can be applied over the top of lawn with no effect to the turfgrass. Ortho Weed B Gon and Fertilome Weed Free Zone are popular selective herbicides that can be used in lawns. They provide good control of most broadleaf weeds growing in the lawn. Products like Image Nutsedge Killer, Sedgehammer, and Hi-yield Nutsedge Killer provide good control of sedge-like weeds growing in the lawn. All of the products listed above are known a post-emergent herbicides because they are applied to a plant that is already growing. Preemergent herbicides are used to kill plants as soon as they germinate. Annual weeds that come back from a seed are best controlled using pre-emergent herbicides. Dimension (dithiopyr) is the most popular herbicide of this type used by homeowners. Apply it in February and again in September for best results. Remember to always read and follow label instructions before applying any type of pesticide.
