Believing God

SUPERINTENDENT

Pastor Stephen Tourville, D. Min. 717.795.5921 supt@penndel.org

for Greater Things in 2014 “All things are possible with God” (Mark 10:27) is a remarkable Scripture. In this passage, Jesus brings out the truth that what is impossible with men is possible with God. Sometimes we look back and recognize that God has done amazing things for us. Jesus came to this earth to bring salvation for all who will receive Him. The nativity reminds us of God’s miracle of the incarnation and results in our personal salvation. The New Year is an opportunity to focus on what God has for us in the future. As I think and pray about this next year, my heart beats a little faster. I am excited for what I can see with my eye of faith for our fellowship in this coming season of ministry. While there are many outstanding ministries that effectively bless our fellowship where individuals are saved, baptized in the Spirit, and led to a deeper walk with Christ, the task before us is still enormous. There are two areas which I would like to give special focus to in the coming years. The question that weighs heavily on my heart is, “how we can reach the over 900 thousand

people of Delaware and the over 12.7 million people of Pennsylvania?” Our movement is one of the grassroots. All the ministries that occur must be connected to the local church. Given the fact that thousands of churches all over America are closed every year (PA and DE are no different),

Christmas , s g n i s s e l B ly i m a F e l l i v r u The To

fewer and fewer people are finding their way into the Church of Jesus Christ. This must change, but how. The local church is the key strategy to reach lost people with the love of Jesus. Born of this reality is the vital importance of new churches being planted and existing ones becoming healthier in fulfilling the Great Commission. This is not about the size of any church, but it is about being the people of God in a world in need of hope, peace, joy and love. Planting new churches and leading existing churches to greater effectiveness will not occur automatically or because I think it is a good idea. It will occur as together we pray, work, and believe God for greater things in 2014 than we have ever experienced before. Is it possible that the church could catch the vision for the hurting people of the community? Is it possible for the

senior saints to love the younger generations with the love of Jesus in practical ways? Is it possible for multiple generations to coexist in one congregation? Is it possible that we begin to see our communities as God’s assigned mission field rather than our personal place of comfort? We face many challenges in our culture and in the local congregation to fulfill God’s desire for who we are as the people of God. Whatever our context, the truth remains that “Nothing is impossible with God” if we only believe.

That power is like the working of His mighty strength, which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.”

CHURCH PLANTING SUNDAY — September 21, 2014 There have been some amazing things taking place in our network in regard to church planting for which we are grateful because we know it is one of the most effective ways to reach lost people for Christ. This coming year we are believing God that PennDel will launch at least 10 churches on CHURCH PLANTING SUNDAY- September 21, 2014. It will be an amazing weekend for the kingdom of God and we are hoping that every church and minister in PennDel will get involved in this church planting project. We would love to hear what God is speaking to you about church planting in 2014, as well as extending the invitation to join us in this amazing project. So how can you get involved? • Pray and ask God to direct you in your vision in planting new churches. • Pray and give towards a church planter launching.

Every Christmas, since 1973, every student has received a huge shopping bag crammed full of goodies: books, snacks, underwear, socks, dress shirts, sweaters, hoodies, school supplies, personal items and much, much more. For many it is the FIRST gift they have received in years , maybe decades. It is one of the many ways we demonstrate the love of Jesus. As we celebrate the holidays and anticipate a new year, it is our desire to believe God for greater usefulness in the work of His kingdom. The Apostle John’s comments on John the Baptist’s role reflect this desire: “This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.” (John 1:7, NKJV) May God enable us to be a witness whereby others believe!

Jack Belin Retires Jack and Georgia (who passed away on August 26, 2012) Belin were appointed as Assemblies of God missionaries to Bolivia in 1988. Jack & Georgia established 76 churches, the Montero Bible Institute for Guarani Indians, and the well-known Freedom School for children living inside the Palmasola Prison. Since 2002 Jack has served with Convoy of Hope as the Director of the Global Food Project, purchasing rice and beans for hungry people overseas. “Missions is a partnership,” Jack reminds us. “None of these adventures would have been possible without the faithful prayers and financial support of our PennDel churches and the divine empowerment of the Holy Spirit.” He expresses heart-felt thanks to all who have stood with him through twenty-five years of missionary service. Jack is retiring from World Missions effective December 31, 2013. Thank you for your faithful support of Jack and World Missions. Through your giving, many lives have been touched with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Steve and Lori Potutschnig Resign You have been our faithful partners helping us to advance the Kingdom of God in Bolivia since 1998. Your prayers and financial investment made it possible to help train church planters and be involved in over thirty construction projects which included churches, bible schools and Christian schools. We are also very grateful to the children and youth of PennDel who helped us purchase Speed-the-Light vehicles, equipment and BGMC materials! Thank you! Our family’s lives are exceedingly rich for having been privileged to serve in Bolivia for so many years. We are blessed to have had each of you along for that journey. The road may have turned, taking us from missionary service in Bolivia to a stateside pastorate in Berwick, Pennsylvania, but we trust the Lord continues to order our steps! We look forward to strengthening our partnership as together we advance the Kingdom of God in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and the uttermost parts of the earth!

ave you ever noticed that relationship problems occur around holiday seasons? As you prepare to celebrate the first coming of the Prince of Peace,

remember that He came to this earth because “God so loved the world.” Loving difficult people that may include family members can be challenging during the busy, stressful holiday season. You may want to add one more “to do list” to your holiday lists. You can call this the “Holiday Peacemaker List.”

Holiday Peacemaker List Overlook minor offenses, Proverbs 19:11

,

Decide to be a peacemaker Matthew 5:9

What will you decide to do when you are faced with a relational difference this Christmas season that brings hurt or pain into the center of your soul? Will you choose to love? Loving another person enough to meet them on the bridge of peace is the best choice. Jesus came to the earth to meet us on the bridge of peace and reconciliation built by the cross of Calvary.

8 | Network connexions | Holiday 2013

THE CHOICE: BUILDING A BRIDGE OF PEACE “You don’t love people!” voiced a disgruntled church member. The pain of this untrue statement cut me to the center of my soul. This offense brought me to the valley of decision. Would I continue to love this person looking past their pain and hurt or would I choose to build a wall of separation between us? Conflict provides believers the opportunity to either build walls of separation or bridges of peace. The sources of conflict in a local body of believers vary but can include a lack of communication, misunderstanding, change or transition, differing or unmet expectations, a lack of discernment or wisdom, unresolved personal issues and the results of spiritual warfare.

GUEST CONTRIBUTOR Pastor Tim Halbfoerster River of God Church Enola, PA

Tim Halbfoerster serves as pastor of River of God Church with campuses in Enola and Harrisburg. Since 2003, Tim has served as the coordinator for BridgeBuilders, an initiative of the PennDel Ministry Network. BridgeBuilders helps build healthy relationships during times of conflict by providing coaching, training and mediation services to churches. For more information, contact Tim at bridgebuilders@penndel.org.

Conflict resolution is a process that Jesus encourages in His famous Sermon on the Mount. He declares in Matthew 5:9 – “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” God’s family is blessed when peacemakers build bridges of peace when conflict exists in the body of Christ. Building the bridge of peace begins with a believer humbly recognizing their responsibility in the conflict and then going to the other person asking for forgiveness and offering forgiveness. Walls of separation remain when pride, bitterness, gossip, a lack of unconditional love or a lack of forgiveness are not demolished by godly sorrow and repentance. Years ago, I chose to love the disgruntled church member who accused me of not loving people. Love overflowed into my heart for that hurting member as God gave me a brief glimpse into their life of hurt, pain and difficulty. When it comes right down to it, we all have a choice to make — we can be a grinch or a giver of God’s grace.

Give the best gift of Christmas this year – the gift of God’s love to others. Network connexions | Holiday 2013 | 9

From all of us at the PennDel Ministry Network, we wish you the most joyous season as we celebrate the birth of our Lord. We are believing Him for a great year in 2014. n the movie, The Christmas Story, Ralphie dreams of getting a Red Ryder carbine action two-hundred shot range model air rifle. When I was Ralphie’s age, a Red Ryder didn’t make it onto my Christmas List but had I grown up in western Pennsylvania, I probably would have been hunting by nine years old! I can relate to having that Christmas wish. I remember paging through the Sears Christmas Catalog that was titled the “Wish Book.“ It was loaded with the things that Ralphie and I would dream about getting Christmas morning. We jokingly say, “The difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.” The truth is we all have an inner Ralphie that focuses on things and thinks that they will give us that satisfaction that we crave. At best we end up selling it on eBay and at its worst, as we saturate ourselves with the culture of this world, we can shoot our eyes out with greed. So this Christmas season, here are three great things we can give that are more valuable than a Red Ryder BB gun…

Give Blessings

While many of us will never stick our tongue to a frozen flag pole, we do find other ways to get into trouble with our tongue. Stay clear from the gossip and the cynicism of this age. This Christmas, as we get together with our families and friends, let’s look for ways to bless and encourage people. Let’s be dream releasers and not dream killers!

Give Memories

I remember one Christmas party where a friend of mine was given a leg lamp night light. I didn’t get it because I had not yet watched The Christmas Story but I still remember my friend howling with laughter. Recently, a blogger shared about the importance of giving memories… “When I was about 7 years old I found a completely black rotten peanut. I wrapped it up and gave it to my dad for Christmas thinking I was really funny. The next year, under the tree, I got a bag of carrots from my dad. For the next 40+ years we exchanged some of the funniest, exotic, strange, odd gifts every year. Just the two of us. Dad died in 2010, and I miss my goofy Christmas present every year, but the memories of my special Christmas gift exchange with my dad are absolutely priceless. One silly gift at Christmas and years and years of memories!”

Give Jesus

There is no scene in the movie of the Parker family going to church. No mention of Jesus as Lord. In fact, they are like many people that we live next door to. Let’s make time this holiday to step out of our busy church schedules and meet and share The Christmas Story of Jesus with the Parkers.

Who Owns Christmas? A

ccording to a 2012 Rasmussen poll, 76% of Americans think that Christmas should be about Jesus, rather than Santa. At the same time, it’s hard to pass through December without hearing about the “War on Christmas.” Local governments, schools, and communities are continuously being challenged by non-Christian worldviews regarding the public display of nativity scenes and singing of Christmas carols. I’ve been pondering this question...who owns the message of Christmas? Christ was God’s gift to the world, and in this sense, Christmas belongs to all of humanity. Yet the message of Christmas has been given specifically to the church. 2 Corinthians 5:19 declares that God has entrusted the Message to us! God did not entrust the Message to a government or a school; He entrusted it to the church! Since most Americans expect to hear about Jesus at Christmas time, it makes sense that we take ownership of the story of the incarnation and declare it in all its fullness. The advent of the Living Word should lead us to do more than argue over the rights of the government to display the story. We are the church, so let us passionately proclaim the Truth of Christmas—that God made his love for the world tangible by sending Jesus Christ as a sacrifice (Romans 5:8). How can we do this on a public school campus? While schools may not be able to proclaim the message of the cross, students can. The church can be active in proclaiming the message of Christmas on the public school campus through students (Campus Missionaries) and student organizations (Bible Clubs/Groups) who take ownership of the message. Here are some practical ways that students and Bible Clubs can share the power of the Gospel at Christmas:

 Give an under-appreciated group in your school a Christmas dinner, gifts, and share with them how Christmas has impacted the world.

 Throw the best Christmas party ever in your school! Get permission to use the gym or cafeteria, have games, give away prizes, maybe hold a gift-exchange, and have someone share about God’s gift exchange—Jesus Christ given in exchange for our salvation.

 Put on a Film Festival at your school and show Christmas movies, including a short film about the birth of Christ. Have someone share a testimony about how the incarnation has affected them.

BIBLE QUIZ CHAMPIONSHIPS Bible Quiz is a discipleship ministry geared for teens in sixth through 12th grade. Each year a different book or books of the New Testament are memorized by students. Several times during the year students attend meets within their district in order to test their ability to memorize and understand God’s Word. District and Regional meets take place in the Spring of each year with the top teams advancing to Nationals. Each year thousands of dollars in scholarships are awarded to students for their hard work. We are proud to announce the teams and students who excelled at Nationals this year: Pocono Community Church, Mt. Pocono, PA came in 6th out of the 40 participating teams. South Hills, Bethel Park and Journey Church, Bridgeville both tied for 14th place. From Mt. Pocono, Joseph Chacra, 2013 Senior, placed 3rd for the 19 rounds of quizzing with a 114 average and 17 Quiz Outs, and then placed 4th in the Individual Tournament. 2013 Freshman, Jonathan Brown, of South Hills placed 10th in the Nation.

BELIEVING GOD

Christmas 1989

for in 2014

As each year comes to an end, I have a tendency to declare it to be a “good year,” or a “difficult year.” While events happen that sculpt our view of periods of time, much of what we perceive a year to be, depends upon our mind-set.

As God has blessed us in the past, I believe he will continue to bless us in 2014! We look forward to our first grandchild pictured below, due to make his/her appearance somewhere around December 26, 2013!

Merry Christmas from the Poole Family!

In 2014, I hope for a mind-set that says, “Whatever God brings along this journey, I am in!” I hope that God will do amazing things through each of us as we look to Him for guidance, wisdom and strength. I hope that when you look back on it, you will be able to say, “2014 was a good year!”

The Royal Rangers have spent the last 5 years retooling our ministry to remain relevant and effective in reaching more men and boys than ever, more effectively than ever. We are now Royal Rangers 2.0. In 2014, we believe that God will lift up the eyes and tug at the hearts of men to get involved in the leadership and mentoring of boys and the implementation of RR 2.0. We also believe that God will enlarge our work force by returning the fruits of our labor and utilize the countless young men that have been reached by Royal Rangers over the years and inspire them to give back to the ministry. “The fields are white and already to harvest,” (John 4:35). It is time to seize the day or a generation will be lost. We believe God will inspire and cause men to step up and win the souls of countless boys at any cost.

“For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:11 As we celebrate Christmas, the emphasis should be on the birth of Christ the Lord. We read about the Virgin Mary whom God chose to be the mother of His son; We are curious about a mysterious star; We wonder about the strange wise men; We listen to the song of the heavenly choir.

We are amazed at the proclamation of the angel that a Savior would be born. Jesus was born to be our Savior. He came to seek and save the lost. By giving His life, He saved us from sin and by rising from the grave He gave us eternal life – He is Christ the Lord! In this Christmas season, let us love and honor Him who is the Lord of the universe, nature and nations by making Him the Lord of our lives.
