Peninsula Symphony Orchestra October 2021 Maestro Mitchell Sardou Klein, Music Director & Conductor We welcome Larry Laskowski to the Peninsula Symphony family. Trained as a classical pianist, he was educated at Harvard, SUNY, the Manhattan School of Music, and CUNY. He taught at the Mannes School of Music for many years and served as Dean there for five years. He was active in music theory, especially Schenkerian analysis. Here are his program notes for our October concerts: Beethoven: Leonore Overture No. 3, Op. 72 Beethoven: Symphony No. 5, Op. 67 Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue, Jon Kimura Parker, piano December 2020 marked the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. Celebrations around the world were planned. Many didn’t happen. PSO has managed to pull together a lovely program this fall in part to commemorate the anniversary.

The program includes two compositions that are quintessential Beethoven.

Beethoven: Leonore Overture No. 3 Opus 72 Beethoven wrote only one opera, Fidelio. It’s being performed at SF Opera this fall. It’s a lovely, curious, and intriguing opera. Full of Beethoven’s middle period passion.

The early 1800’s in Europe were exciting times. The French Revolution was barely in the rear view mirror, and more changes were in sight. The old aristocracy was threatened and a new era of individual freedom was

PROGRAM NOTES on the horizon. And Beethoven was fully in tune with those currents.

His music took on a very personal approach during this period.

Fidelio is a ‘rescue’ opera about abuse of power and the potential strength of love and the free individual. Political prisoners are saved in a very dramatic fashion, and the individual dissident is literally unshackled before our eyes, mostly through the strength of a romantic relationship. The human spirit triumphs over the established social order.

Fidelio went through many versions with various overtures and changes.

One of the overtures is Leonore Overture No. 3. While this piece is seldom played as an overture to the opera these days, it has earned a place in the symphonic concert repertoire. It stands on its own as an astonishing composition that summarizes the drama of the opera.

A dark beginning. Then hope. Then the dramatic rescue, complete with offstage trumpet and final orchestral celebration. It still inspires us today with strong emotion and human spirit. Somehow Beethoven continues to teach us in our own confusing times Happy Birthday, Ludwig!

Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 Opus 67 Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is probably the best known piece of classical music ever composed. Since its premiere in 1808 it has been a staple in every major orchestra’s repertoire, and an audience favorite as well.

The symphonic genre that Beethoven inherited was certainly grand. Typically four movements, each self-contained. Of course Haydn and Mozart had created masterpieces in the genre, pieces that we still treasure today, but it was Beethoven’s destiny to transform the

genre itself into something different. Beethoven was interested in an approach that would connect the movements into a whole dramatic flow. Still four separate movements, but together they give us an experience not unlike an opera or a play.

The Fifth Symphony is a milestone in that development. Here we have a drama that plays out over the course of the work. The first movement portrays the conflict, the struggle, through the use of that iconic fournote theme, relentlessly developed. The second movement shows the strength of love, warmth, and pride. It’s in the third movement that the conflict actually sparks, though quietly. We hear reminiscences from the first movement, the conflict. There’s hesitancy and uncertainty. Then the famous transition to the finale, where righteousness prevails. And even in the finale, we relive that transition near the end in one of the most thrilling conclusions in music. All in a symphony that lasts only about 30 minutes!

Beethoven’s mastery and transformation of the symphony influenced many composers who came after him. Brahms, Mahler, Bruckner, Schumann, they all composed in their magnificent ways but nonetheless in his shadow.

So all the more significant that in this (almost) anniversary year, we go back to Beethoven’s Fifth. The symphony as drama. It really was Beethoven that invented it.

Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue George Gershwin exemplifies cross genre music like no other. He grew up in NYC as the son of Russian immigrants, and at the age of 10 showed a talent for music and the piano. Early on he made a modest living on Tin Pan Alley as a composer of popular songs. He was soon very successful on Broadway as well, and excelled in producing film scores later in life. He had limited classical training, and he understood that he lacked some skills that could help him. He asked to study with Ravel, but was turned down. Ravel reportedly said, “Why become a second-rate Ravel when you’re already a first-rate Gershwin?”

Gershwin composed a number of works that bridged the gaps between jazz, popular music, Broadway, and classical music. Let’s not forget about An American in Paris, Porgy and Bess, Concerto in F. Tonight we get to hear the incomparable Rhapsody in Blue.

First, George was a remarkable pianist. He could play instinctively in many styles, and he improvised with great skill. Many of the virtuoso solo passages in Rhapsody in Blue were improvised in his own early performances of the piece. He just did his thing, like no other.

There are several versions of Rhapsody in Blue. PSO will perform the full orchestra version orchestrated by Ferde Grofé (1942). But it’s George’s genius that shines through. It’s a kind of concerto with improvisation, free in form, expressive in intent. Not bound by historical constraints but also respectful of tradition, Rhapsody in Blue captures the energy, ambition, freedom, diversity, and optimism of life in New York City at the time.

Gershwin wrote: “True music must reflect the thought and aspirations of the people and time. My people are Americans. My time is today.”

Over the centuries, some famous composers lived sadly short lives. For example, Mozart and Schubert died relatively young. But somehow their creative lives were complete. Late Mozart, late Schubert, their music is recognizably that of genius that knew that the end was near. This is not the case with Gershwin. His early death at age 38 was a sudden and crushing blow, a creative life cut short in its prime. The great American writer John O’Hara remarked: “George Gershwin died on July 11, 1937, but I don’t have to believe it if I don’t want to.”

MUSIC DIRECTOR & CONDUCTOR Mitchell Sardou Klein Music Director & Conductor Music Director and Conductor Mitchell Sardou Klein brings extensive conducting experience in the US, Europe, Australia and Japan to his leadership of the Peninsula Symphony. During his 35 years on the Symphony’s podium, he has guest conducted the Seattle Symphony, New Polish Philharmonic, Suddetic Philharmonic, Richmond Symphony, Eastern Philharmonic and many other orchestras in the US and Europe. In California he has led Symphony Silicon Valley, the San Jose Symphony, the Santa Rosa Symphony, the Inland Empire/Riverside Philharmonic, Ballet San Jose, the California Riverside Ballet and the Livermore-Amador Philharmonic and others.

He founded and is Music Director of the Peninsula Youth Orchestra, which he has taken on concert tours of England, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Belgium, Holland, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Maestro Klein directed over a hundred concerts as Associate Conductor of the Kansas City Philharmonic (where he was also Principal Pops Conductor and Principal Conductor of Starlight Theater, the Philharmonic’s summer home), and also served as Music Director of the Santa Cruz Symphony. He also has extensive experience in conducting ballet orchestras, including the Kansas City, Lone Star, Oakland, and Westport Ballets, as well as the Theater Ballet of San Francisco and les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo. Before turning to the podium, he performed as a cellist for many years. Known to most everyone as Mitch, he enjoys travel, photography, jazz and visual arts in his spare time.

Since 1984, he has been Director of the Irving M. Klein International String Competition. Held in San Francisco each June, the Competition has become one of the most prominent in the world, featuring prizes totaling over $25,000, attracting applicants from more than twenty nations annually, and launching numerous major international concert careers.

Critics have consistently praised his work. The San José Mercury described his performance with Symphony Silicon Valley in 2012 as a “gorgeous performance; big, enveloping and wonderfully luxuriant.”

The San Mateo County Times described him in 2007 as “Super Conductor: Mitchell Sardou Klein, music director of the Peninsula Symphony, led his musicians through another triumphant concert. The Peninsula Symphony just keeps getting better and better. Great works and great performances by all.” The Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza proclaimed, “The American conductor quickly established a fine rapport with his orchestra. Klein is a musician who has the musical score in his head, rather than his head in the score, which he demonstrated ably.

The creative conception and artistic shape which he brings to his work comes from deep inside him.”

Maestro Klein is a winner of many prestigious awards, including the 2008 Diamond Award for Best Individual Artist, the Silver Lei Award from the 2009 Honolulu Film Festival (for the World Premiere of Giancarlo Aquilanti’s La Poverta), the 2000 ASCAP Award for Programming of American Music on Foreign Tour, the 2001 Jullie Billiart Award from the College of Notre Dame for Outstanding Community Service, a 1996 award for the year’s best television performance program in the Western States (for the one-hour PBS program about him and the Peninsula Symphony) as well as the 1993 Bravo Award for his contribution to the Bay Area’s cultural life.

MUSIC DIRECTOR & CONDUCTOR Mr. Klein was born in New York City, into a musical family that included members of the Claremont and Budapest String Quartets. He began cello studies at age four with his father, Irving Klein, founder of the Claremont Quartet. His mother, Elaine Hartong Klein, danced with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet.

Cited for his “keen judgment, tight orchestral discipline, feeling for tempo, and unerring control,” Maestro Klein has conducted many significant world, American, and West Coast premieres, including works by Bohuslav Martinu, Meyer Kupferman, Joan Tower, Hans Kox, George Barati, Benjamin Lees, Giancarlo Aquilanti, Melissa Hui, Rodion Shchedrin, Brian Holmes, Ron Miller, Lee Actor, Jonathan Russell, Alvin Brehm, and Margaret Garwood. He has appeared frequently on national and international broadcasts, including National Public Radio, the Voice of America, the WFMT Fine Arts Network, PBS Television, and KQED television. He lives in Oakland, California with his wife, violist Patricia Whaley. Their daughter, Elizabeth, lives and works in Washington D.C.

ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR

Hoh Chen Assistant Conductor Peninsula Symphony welcomed Hoh Chen as Assistant Conductor beginning with its 70th Season. Chen leads Peninsula Symphony during a part of several programs of the subscription series and the Los Altos based Summer Concert, and also programs and conducts the annual Family Concert each Spring. His conducting debut with the orchestra was on October 27 and 28, 2018.

In response to his appointment, Chen stated, ”I am thrilled for the opportunity to return to the Bay Area and join Peninsula Symphony as their Assistant Conductor. It will be an honor to work with such thoughtful and dedicated musicians.”

Music Director and Conductor Mitchell Sardou Klein said of Chen’s appointment, “I look forward to working with Hoh as our Assistant Conductor with great enthusiasm. He has demonstrated exceptional qualities of musicianship and leadership, and the musicians of Peninsula Symphony recognized those attributes in his excellent audition.”

Chen was the Associate Conductor of the University of California Wind Ensembles from 2003 to 2008 and served as the Music Director for the Berkeley’s Young Musicians Program from 2006 to 2010. Subsequently, he was appointed Assistant Conductor of the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra where he conducted, managed and directed the Summer Symphony Program. Chen served under Maestro David Milnes at Berkeley until September 2011.

A UC Berkeley alumnus, Chen received his Bachelor of Arts in Music in 2008. After his tenure in the Bay Area, he went on to study at the Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University and receive his Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting in June 2016.

Jon Kimura Parker, piano Pianist Jon Kimura Parker is known for his charisma, infectious enthusiasm, and dynamic performances. A veteran of the international concert stage, he has performed regularly in the Berlin Philharmonie, Carnegie Hall, London’s South Bank, the Sydney Opera House, and the Beijing Concert Hall. He was recently named Creative Partner for the Minnesota Orchestra’s Summer at Orchestra Hall, serves as the Artistic Director for the Honens International Piano Competition and Artistic Advisor for the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival, and is on the faculty of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.

Highlights of his 2019-20 season includes performances of the Barber, Grieg, Tchaikovsky, and complete Beethoven concertos with the Toronto Symphony, Fort Worth Symphony, Colorado Music Festival, and others.

He also appears in programs for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Ravinia Festival, Seattle Chamber Music Festival, and Toronto Summer Music. In addition, he performs widely throughout North America and Europe with the Montrose Trio (together with violinist Martin Beaver and cellist Clive Greensmith), and will be undertaking an extensive tour of Australia together with violinist Cho-Liang Lin.

JON KIMURA PARKER

A collaborator in a wide variety of styles, Jon Kimura Parker has performed with Doc Severinsen, Audra McDonald, Bobby McFerrin, Pablo Ziegler, and Sanjaya Malakar. As a founding member of Off the Score, he also performed with Stewart Copeland – the legendary drummer of The Police – for the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival’s 20th Anniversary Season, featuring his own arrangements of music by Prokofiev, Ravel and Stravinsky.

Parker’s discography of a dozen albums features music ranging from Mozart and Chopin to Barber and Stravinsky. His most recent recording “Fantasy,” built around Schubert’s “Wanderer” Fantasy, was described by Musical Toronto as giving “a big, clear picture window of a rich soul and great artistic depth.” His YouTube channel features a series of Concerto Chat videos, which explore the piano concerto repertoire.

Jon Kimura Parker studied with Edward Parker and Keiko Parker, Lee Kum-Sing at the Vancouver Academy of Music and the University of British Columbia, Marek Jablonski at the Banff Centre, and Adele Marcus at The Juilliard School. After winning the Gold Medal at the 1984 Leeds International Piano Competition, Parker has gone on to become an Officer of The Order of Canada and to receive Honorary Doctorates from the University of British Columbia and the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto.
