PROGRAM NOTES

Peninsula Symphony Program Notes – June, 2022 Our concluding subscription set of the season brings us back to the gloriously varied and rich treasury of American symphonic music from the 20s to the 50s, but with a fabulous new World Premiere that could only happen in the 21st Century. At its best, American musical culture has absorbed a huge variety of influences on the American persona, and this program reflects this gift. Leonard Bernstein’s Candide (1956) brings the Broadway world into the concert hall with Lenny’s unique gift for exuberant and brilliant orchestral writing. This Overture explodes with vitality and warm lyricism, using the forces of the orchestra as only he could. It is traditional, in that it incorporates four of the musical numbers from the show, yet it has the unmistakable panache that typifies its creator. It’s easy to see why this is among the most performed and most adored works in the canon. Michael Thurber and Tessa Lark have invented a whole new genre of duos for violin and bass. Bluegrass, jazz, Bach, theater music – it’s all part of a charismatic mix that captures their voracious musical appetites and their joyous personalities. You can read more about them and tonight’s world premiere of Inventions elsewhere in this program book. Dances in the Canebrakes (1953) is one of the last compositions by the great Chicago Black Renaissance master, Florence Price, whose music is being rediscovered with great enthusiasm in concert halls all over the world. Price’s music ranges from sophisticated symphonic and chamber masterworks to character pieces like this one, redolent of her Southern roots. Canebrakes are a dominant bamboo-like plant characteristic of the Antebellum South. The three movements of this charming piece (originally for piano, and orchestrated by another great Black American composer, William Grant Still) reflect many musical traditions. The first movement, charming and sprightly, is a kind of “rag;” the second movement, sultry and languid, might be thought of as a “slow drag:’ the third movement is a lighthearted “cakewalk.” Here we see the warmth and enchantment of Florence Price. In our upcoming 2022-23 Season, we will encounter one of her complex masterworks – the Third Symphony.

PENINSULA 4 SYMPHONY 4

PROGRAM NOTES William Schuman’s New England Triptych (tonight we will hear the first movement, titled “Be Glad Then, America”) represents another great musical tradition of the 1950s – the powerful urban school of composition centered on New York City. As President of the Juilliard School of Music, and, later, as the first President of Lincoln Center – but also as the highly successful composer of eight symphonies, and major concertos and overtures – he had a huge influence on the burgeoning musical scene in mid-century New York. This dynamic and spectacularly orchestrated piece (written in 1956 and based on music of William Billings) bursts through with flashy brass, pulsating percussion, stylish strings and woodwinds in a virtuoso display of joy for the American spirit. An American in Paris (music: 1928 – Gene Kelly movie: 1951) melds uniquely American styles of film, musical theater, dance, and symphonic music into an iconic George Gershwin orchestral gem. Gershwin was deeply connected to Paris, and to his reverence for two great musical Parisians: the Impressionist composer Maurice Ravel and the seminal composition teacher Nadia Boulanger. He desperately wanted to study with both of them, and twice traveled to the City of Lights to work with them. But Ravel concluded, “Why be a second-rate Ravel when you can be a first-rate Gershwin.” And Boulanger told him, “What could I give you that you haven’t already got?” Renewed in the validity of his own muse, Gershwin completed this piece, and moved on to other masterpieces, like his second rhapsody. An American in Paris encapsulates the sights, sounds, and emotions of Paris in the 1920s – the bustle of street life as a traveler jauntily explores the city, complete with noisy traffic and taxi horns; the jazz and blues clubs; and the majestic spirit of this robust and historic city. It’s Parisian, but viewed through the eyes and ears of America. And it’s great fun! Mitchell Sardou Klein

MUSIC DIRECTOR & CONDUCTOR Mitchell Sardou Klein

Music Director & Conductor Music Director and Conductor Mitchell Sardou Klein brings extensive conducting experience in the US, Europe, Australia and Japan to his leadership of the Peninsula Symphony. During his 35 years on the Symphony’s podium, he has guest conducted the Seattle Symphony, New Polish Philharmonic, Suddetic Philharmonic, Richmond Symphony, Eastern Philharmonic and many other orchestras in the US and Europe. In California he has led Symphony Silicon Valley, the San Jose Symphony, the Santa Rosa Symphony, the Inland Empire/Riverside Philharmonic, Ballet San Jose, the California Riverside Ballet and the Livermore-Amador Philharmonic and others. He founded and is Music Director of the Peninsula Youth Orchestra, which he has taken on concert tours of England, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Belgium, Holland, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Maestro Klein directed over a hundred concerts as Associate Conductor of the Kansas City Philharmonic (where he was also Principal Pops Conductor and Principal Conductor of Starlight Theater, the Philharmonic’s summer home), and also served as Music Director of the Santa Cruz Symphony. He also has extensive experience in conducting ballet orchestras, including the Kansas City, Lone Star, Oakland, and Westport Ballets, as well as the Theater Ballet of San Francisco and les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo. Before turning to the podium, he performed as a cellist for many years. Known to most everyone as Mitch, he enjoys travel, photography, jazz and visual arts in his spare time. Since 1984, he has been Director of the Irving M. Klein International String Competition. Held in San Francisco each June, the Competition has become one of the most prominent in the world, featuring prizes totaling over $25,000, attracting applicants from more than twenty nations annually, and launching numerous major international concert careers. Critics have consistently praised his work. The San José Mercury described his performance with Symphony Silicon Valley in 2012 as a “gorgeous performance; big, enveloping and wonderfully luxuriant.” The San Mateo County Times described him in 2007 as “Super Conductor: Mitchell Sardou Klein, music director of the Peninsula Symphony, led his musicians through another triumphant concert. The Peninsula Symphony just keeps getting better and better. Great works and great performances

MUSIC DIRECTOR & CONDUCTOR

by all.” The Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza proclaimed, “The American conductor quickly established a fine rapport with his orchestra. Klein is a musician who has the musical score in his head, rather than his head in the score, which he demonstrated ably. The creative conception and artistic shape which he brings to his work comes from deep inside him.” Maestro Klein is a winner of many prestigious awards, including the 2008 Diamond Award for Best Individual Artist, the Silver Lei Award from the 2009 Honolulu Film Festival (for the World Premiere of Giancarlo Aquilanti’s La Poverta), the 2000 ASCAP Award for Programming of American Music on Foreign Tour, the 2001 Jullie Billiart Award from the College of Notre Dame for Outstanding Community Service, a 1996 award for the year’s best television performance program in the Western States (for the one-hour PBS program about him and the Peninsula Symphony) as well as the 1993 Bravo Award for his contribution to the Bay Area’s cultural life. Mr. Klein was born in New York City, into a musical family that included members of the Claremont and Budapest String Quartets. He began cello studies at age four with his father, Irving Klein, founder of the Claremont Quartet. His mother, Elaine Hartong Klein, danced with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. Cited for his “keen judgment, tight orchestral discipline, feeling for tempo, and unerring control,” Maestro Klein has conducted many significant world, American, and West Coast premieres, including works by Bohuslav Martinu, Meyer Kupferman, Joan Tower, Hans Kox, George Barati, Benjamin Lees, Giancarlo Aquilanti, Melissa Hui, Rodion Shchedrin, Brian Holmes, Ron Miller, Lee Actor, Jonathan Russell, Alvin Brehm, and Margaret Garwood. He has appeared frequently on national and international broadcasts, including National Public Radio, the Voice of America, the WFMT Fine Arts Network, PBS Television, and KQED television. He lives in Oakland, California with his wife, violist Patricia Whaley. Their daughter, Elizabeth, lives and works in Washington D.C.

ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR

Hoh Chen

Assistant Conductor Peninsula Symphony welcomed Hoh Chen as Assistant Conductor beginning with its 70th Season. Chen leads Peninsula Symphony during a part of several programs of the subscription series and the Los Altos based Summer Concert, and also programs and conducts the annual Family Concert each Spring. His conducting debut with the orchestra was on October 27 and 28, 2018. In response to his appointment, Chen stated, ”I am thrilled for the opportunity to return to the Bay Area and join Peninsula Symphony as their Assistant Conductor. It will be an honor to work with such thoughtful and dedicated musicians.” Music Director and Conductor Mitchell Sardou Klein said of Chen’s appointment, “I look forward to working with Hoh as our Assistant Conductor with great enthusiasm. He has demonstrated exceptional qualities of musicianship and leadership, and the musicians of Peninsula Symphony recognized those attributes in his excellent audition.” Chen was the Associate Conductor of the University of California Wind Ensembles from 2003 to 2008 and served as the Music Director for the Berkeley’s Young Musicians Program from 2006 to 2010. Subsequently, he was appointed Assistant Conductor of the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra where he conducted, managed and directed the Summer Symphony Program. Chen served under Maestro David Milnes at Berkeley until September 2011. A UC Berkeley alumnus, Chen received his Bachelor of Arts in Music in 2008. After his tenure in the Bay Area, he went on to study at the Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University and receive his Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting in June 2016.

FEATURED ARTISTS

TESSA LARK & MICHAEL THURBER Award-Winning violinist Tessa Lark and virtuoso composer/bassist Michael Thurber have come together to create a duo unlike any other. By fusing their Classical and American music influences, they have created a wholly original sound which they bring to audiences around the country in a charismatic live show. 2019/20 season highlights include a headlining performance at Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival; a Kimmel Center (Philadelphia) debut concert collaborating with legendary flautist Marina Piccinini; and guest-hosting a live broadcast of NPR’s ‘From The Top’. Lark & Thurber met years ago as alumni of ‘From The Top’. They began developing their duo collaboration in 2016 after a one-off performance at an event for WXQR in New York City. The two quickly realized how much they had in common musically. “This duo is a place for us to explore our varied musical influences” explains Lark. “I grew up in Kentucky playing bluegrass long before I started my career as a classical musician, so I’ve always longed for an outlet to integrate my American music roots into my performances”. Thurber adds, “Our diverse musical appetite is what has always drawn Tessa and I together. The fiddle and bass are both such versatile instruments that have played vital roles in so many different musical traditions around the world. It feels very natural to explore the full range of our musical heritage and not be bound by genre”.

PENINSULA 10 SYMPHONY 14

Prior to forming their duo, both Lark and Thurber have enjoyed successful careers of their own. In the classical music world, Tessa has earned many of the top competition prizes available to young artists including, among many others: a 2018 BorlettiBuitoni Trust Fellowship, a 2016 Avery Fisher Career Grant, Silver Medal in the 2014 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, and a First-Place finish in the 2012 Naumburg International Violin Competition. Michael has a reputation as one of the most versatile musical talents of his generation. Whether playing bass on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, composing music for the Royal Shakespeare Company, co-founding the smash YouTube channel CDZA, or hosting his “Thurber Theater” variety show at Joe’s Pub, Thurber’s musical voice defies genre and category. In their respective careers thus far, Tessa and Michael have had the privilege of collaborating with some of the world’s leading musicians in a wide variety of genres -to name just a few: Mitsuko Uchida, Edgar Meyer, Itzhak Perlman, and Mark O’Connor (Tessa), and Yo-Yo Ma, James Taylor, Vulfpeck, Jon Batiste and Cee Lo Green (Michael).
