COUPLES

ANNIVERSARY The Wulfmans

WEDDINGS

Carl and Constance Wulfman celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Sept. 6. The groom’s cousin Sally introduced them in their second week at the University of Michigan, and they were married in Connie’s hometown, Milwaukee, Wis., three years later. Insisting that she wanted to be the wife of a college professor, Connie helped ensure that Fulbright Fellowships enabled them to spend two years at the University of London, where Carl obtained his Ph.D. in chemical physics. Their first son, Michael, was born in London, and sons Peter, Andrew and Edward were born in Austin, Texas, Defiance, Ohio, and Stockton, Calif. In 1961, Dr. Wulfman was appointed chairman of the physics department at University of the Pacific, which made possible the type of family life and interactions with students the couple envisaged. Mrs. Wulfman became president of the Faculty Dames and the local Episcopal Women’s group, and Dr. Wulfman, the first chair of the University Academic Council.

received her GED and graduated from Peninsula College in 2008. She is employed as a medical assistant by the Lower Elwha Health Clinic. The groom graduated from Port Angeles High School in 1988 and attended Peninsula College. He is an architect project manager. The couple live in Port Angeles.

In the past 50 years, sabbatical leaves and invitations from fellow scientists and former students have enabled the family to develop friendships in England, Mexico, Canada, Tasmania, New Zealand, Israel, Japan, Italy and Brazil, as well as the United States. Dr. Wulfman has published more than 70 scientific papers, over half of which were co-authored with students or with other leading scientists. He recently published his new book on theoretical physics, Dynamical Symmetry. During these same years, Mrs. Wulfman found time to be a feature writer at the Defiance Crescent News and editorial assistant for California Horseman Magazine. Recently, she won a first prize at Clallam County Fair for a sweater she spun and knit from wild musk ox underfur. Summer vacations in the past 55 years also made it possible for the family to have many adventures in California’s Sierra Nevada and in the roadless wilds of Northern Canada.

So go now and enjoy every minute of your adventure, she advises. Don’t wait, even if your current budget requires a shorter trip. Parr believes travel experiences are valuable beyond measure — and she should know. “Doing the hot-air balloon ride over the Serengeti . . . seeing the zebras: There is nothing like that,” she said softly. As for her clients, “people don’t come back and say, ‘We wish we hadn’t spent the $500 more for the ocean-view room instead of the garden view.” Parr also knows about the work it takes to earn this kind of money. She caught the travel bug when she was a Rotary Club

South Africa and Rwanda. Then again, Parr also adores Italy, Switzerland and New Zealand. And Croatia is on her radar now. “It looks gorgeous,” she says, “and not a lot of people have gone there.” Parr is divorced with a 21-year-old son who “no longer wants to travel with me,” she says with a smile. “So I travel with friends, or solo. Some of my best trips have been with my best girlfriends.” Another discovery Parr makes, over and over, is that all around this planet, when a sojourner opens up, so do our fellow humans. “If you’re nice to people, they are nice to you,” Parr says. And with that, she may have imparted the best travel tip of all.
