The Perfect Doctor The perfect doctor would be one who could understand both the patient and the complexity of this moment in modern medicine. It wouldn’t hurt if he or she was an excellent communicator with a good sense of humor. Atul Gawande may well be this kind of paragon: a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine since 1998, he has written four New York Times best sellers, is a Harvard professor, and an endocrine surgeon. This lecture focuses on Gawane’s insights into navigating our American health system which can sometimes offer more than ever before in human history, but which is easily as frustrating as it is amazing. 10/6 #464010-03 #464010-04 Rosemary Irwin

Retired world history teacher Judith Dupre will present this exciting lecture. Most of us have an indelible image of Yul Brynner & Deborah Kerr dancing across the stage or silver screen. But what is the real story of Anna and the King? How did Thailand manage to be the only Southeast Asian country to avoid colonization? Why is Thailand often called “The Land of Smiles”? What is the true meaning of a ‘white elephant’? Learn the answers to these and more questions as we examine the history and culture of exotic and mystical Thailand. 10/13 #464010-05 #464010-06 Judy Dupre
